Thank you for stopping me from those stupid behaviors. Makecat 03:30, 8 January 2013 (UTC)
Oh dear. Not one ever sought. I do hope that we can find you a good spot to work. Chin up, and focus on good contributions. :-) — billinghurst sDrewth 08:21, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

User ZubacGleb

Hello! I am a sysop on ro.wiki and I noticed that you have placed a global lock on the account of ZubacGleb, mentioning "spambot" as the reason. His contributions at ro.wiki do not seem to be like a bot. Could you please tell me some more details about the reason of this block? Thanks, Rsocol (talk) 19:01, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the contact, that is obviously an error on my behalf. I was working off a series of spambot account creations that pattern aligned through a short period of time. An account that originates in Europe and editing through an abused Canadian proxy through a methodology that has been exploited by spammers recently and pattern aligns is usually a really good indicator. I misfired on that one. I have unlocked the account. — billinghurst sDrewth 23:38, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

Timeline activation on the Swahili Wikipedia

Hello, Billinghurst/2013! I need your help on our Wikipedia regarding the timeline which I barely copied it from the English Wikipedia to Swahili Wikipedia. Regrettably, it's not working on ours. Please check the sw:Bob_Marley_&_The_Wailers where you could be able to find the problem on Wanachama paragraphy. The timeline does not working the same as the en:Bob_Marley_&_The_Wailers#Members English one. I was wondering if you could provide some technical details or clearing out the trouble by yourself.

With best regards,

Muddyb or,--Wikipedian (Activist) 09:20, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Your wiki would seem to not have mw:Extension:EasyTimeline installed, eg. as per Special:Version (compared with sw:Special:Version) You will need to seek the consensus of your wiki, and if the consensus is to install the extension, then to create a new bugzilla: request to have it done. — billinghurst sDrewth 10:07, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
Wow, that was a fail. Don't answer questions late into the night. I have just repasted the text, and it works fine. [1]]. You will need to dig into mw:Extension:EasyTimeline to see if/how you can change the id of the components, or ask at the talk page of the extension. I don't know it that well. — billinghurst sDrewth 00:03, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
I have checked the site, however, was not so helpful to put it into my native language. Any idea how I could be able to change the script into multilingual? 'cause all I see is English on the timeline. Please! Oh, thank you though!--Wikipedian (Activist) 11:17, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
You will need use the talk page for the extension to ask questions. I am not up-to-date with the extension. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:30, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

en:True Love (song)

Hello! Today you deleted in Russian article ru:True Love (песня) link to "Patsy Cline’s Recording Sessions — The Decca Years" cite because (you wrote) "rm fan site, non-encyclopaedic". Please do the same in English article (see title) too: I only translated it today on Russian (the whole content - text, links etc.). I don't know is it (what you did) correct or not (I'm not expert in Wiki-rules :) ) - I'm only "translate machine" :)) Oh! I found now the same "not-the-best" link in Norwegian article no:True Love (sang). Let's go to fight! :) I wish you success in your part of our common great Wiki-work! Алексей Густов (talk) 16:59, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

I don't doubt the information, I just don't find the source is authoritative to be a reference. Just because someone mentions it doesn't make it an authority. We should find a credible source for the information, eg. Decca records, or someone is a noted expert and has written about the matter, the person who wrote the FB page has obviously got it from somewhere. Svwp

Hello! Please censor these versions of svwp [2], [3] and [4]. Outning. /Obelix (talk) 04:23, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

And these, please. Obelix (talk) 04:29, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
But why oversight the clean versions? And why oversight and not the normal hide/show? --MagnusA (talk) 11:25, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
The request, when I followed up in IRC was to oversight due to the nature of the statements, and as it was OS that was why I asked for review by your OS team to see whether that was overkill, though they were less than pleasant statements as I could see, and with legal aspects stated. Please ask someone with OS to review and undo/set as required. It was emergency measures, reacting in real-time across 3 wikis, so it may not be perfect. Re a clean edit, did I? presumably it would have only been one of mine, and it was a reversion. I can have a look if you like, though would prefer that it be part of the review by your OS. Thank for the queries. — billinghurst sDrewth 11:46, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for the quick answer. I don't think it is necessary for our oversighters @svwiki to review :-). The versions I think are "clean" are the intermediate reverted versions from 05:12 and 05:35 (CET?) Another question though (not a biggie, just curiosity): The delete log says 4 versions hidden, but in the page history there are 6 versions striked over. Is this an effect of oversighting rather than hiding? Or what might be the cause of that? --MagnusA (talk) 12:33, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
A couple of strikes. At first I hid the first four, and while I was dealing with the IP addresses, the person came back for a second dip, so we had another two. I protected the article, and suppressed 1-4, and 5-6 in one go. So the deletions relate to a standard hide (revision delete) and the suppression relates to all of them. — billinghurst sDrewth 15:11, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
Thank you Billinghurst for your help this morning. No clean edit was hidden, only one revert of vandalism but that doesn't matter much I think. Kind regards, Höstblomma (talk) 15:52, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
I agree with Höstblomma. Thank you for your help this morning (five o'clock in Sweden). :-) --MagnusA (talk) 19:48, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. As I said to Tegel in IRC sometime afterwards, my (steward) job was to shake the svWP tree to see if I could loosen an admin, and if/when that fails, to bloody well dive in apply first aid, to leave visible footprints to show what I did do, and hopefully not break anything. I am glad that I got enough right. :-) — billinghurst sDrewth 04:44, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

CU?

Did you forget to remove the rights maybe? Trijnsteltalk 22:59, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

Jyothis and I were working in unison, and he had to go do something, and didn't reappear. So, no, but if it is a concern for you, I can remove and re-add when we get back to it. — billinghurst sDrewth 23:56, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

Note

You enabled Special:GlobalGroupPermissions/Captcha_exempted on WikiSet "12" which has quite a misleading title: Special:WikiSets/12 includes all wikis that are not fully enabled, so it doesn't include eswiki, enwiki, or dewiki, for example. Regards, πr2 (tc) 15:51, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

Revert at Wikimedia News

Please see the comments on my latest edits (both columns) to Wikimedia News. I hope this is acceptable to you. If not, try rewording the message. I don't think simply removing such milestones will have the effect of minimizing their occurrence. - dcljr (talk) 00:28, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Mate, just because we tick past an inconsequential number with zeroes, that celebrates that the community hasn't got its message correct. Woopee. Take it off it is pointless, and made more so by the addition of text. There are far better milestones and news to be celebrating than that. — billinghurst sDrewth 00:48, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
Where on that page does it indicate that we are "celebrating" anything? This is simply a collection of announcements of milestones on different Wikimedia wikis. I think you are reading too much into it. - dcljr (talk) 23:33, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
BTW, more to the point, was it not in fact the announcement of that milestone on that page that ultimately brought it to your attention that the English Wikisource had so many uploaded images? If so, that illustrates exactly why I announce certain image-count milestones. - dcljr (talk) 23:42, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
Oh cool, so when I delete a thousand files that have been moved to commons, you will announce that we are back at 4000? Or when we have got back to 5000 again, you will announce it again? Of course it is an implicit celebration, why would you be doing it otherwise? It is not that we (enWS) are aiming to do; it is not that it is actually a milestone it is a count with three zeros at the end. Please take it off it, is pointless, and made more so by the addition of text. — billinghurst sDrewth 00:26, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Re: Requests for aswiki de-admin

Please see Steward requests page for reply. Thanks. Bishnu Saikia 15:20, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

There had been requests last year at talk:interwiki map to remove wikitravel: as its content is duplicative of a Wikimedia project, wikivoyage:. At the time, you'd indicted that there was a need to show that the prefix was not in use on the individual WMF wikis. Since then, the template which had been using this prefix was voted for deletion at w:Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2012_November_10#Template:Wikitravel and the offending links replaced using a 'bot. Looking at various languages, it would appear the prefix is not currently in use in article space and should be eligible for re-nomination for deletion. Is there anything else which needs to be done to get this deleted? K7L (talk) 23:16, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

Someone previously has run interwiki counts on the use of these interwikis. Worthwhile getting them to do it again, and when we know that the use is gone, we can remove the interwiki. — billinghurst sDrewth 14:24, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
Someone was User_talk:Nemo_bis#Interwiki_to_wikitravel:; he did run these again tools:~nemobis/tmp/iwm/wikitravel-2013.txt and found a few hundred links on user: and talk pages. A handful of mainspace links were missed on lv: and sw: but these are now fixed. The use is gone, at least in the encyclopaedic content. K7L (talk) 19:44, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Request unblocking

Hi, Billinghurst, how are you? I recieved the letter from you saying that i was blocked from editing until 11:24, 11 May 2013 because of Cross-wiki spam: spambot: whois.domaintools.com/63.141.198.247, right? OK first thing I want you to explain what is this "Cross-wiki spam: spambot: whois.domaintools.com/63.141.198.247"?--Airbus A330-343X lover (talk) 12:43, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

We had spambots operating from within the blocked IP range. I have removed the block on the range and you should now be right to edit. I am hoping that your internet provider has done some work and controlled the spammer, and we don't need to look to reimpose the block. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:35, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

test2.wikipedia - cleanup

Hi there. I created several templates and Lua modules on the test2 wikipedia. These have all been implemented now on the English Wiktionary. Dear Billinghurst, for the last few days I di my best to add many linkd to pollinators of orchids that are on my website. However, all the links were removed. Could you tell me how I can add the pollinators on the Wikipages? I thought I did a fine contribution to the knowledge of orchids. Thanks, Jean

Thanks for contacting me. The Wikipedias are not a directory linking service, they are language encyclopaedias. Some reading that should put this into context
So the consideration is not whether you should be adding your links to the wikipedia articles, but are any links that you are adding authoritative, necessary, fully relevant, and adding the best value to the Wikipedias. If you have information that is relevant and pertinent, then it should be added to the article, properly cited, not just an external link. — billinghurst sDrewth 22:59, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Wikidata weekly summary #49

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
    • Development
    • Design improvements to the SetClaim API module
    • More work on implementing the simple inclusion syntax that will be 1 way to access Wikidata data on Wikipedia
    • More work on Lua (the second way to access Wikidata data on Wikipedia)
    • Added parser page property to hold entity id in client. This fixes:
      • bugzilla:45037 - don’t show edit link if noexternallanglinks has suppressed all Wikidata links
      • bugzilla:44536 - have the edit link go directly to the Q### pages, instead of Special:ItemByTitle which shall make the link be more reliable and work for all namespaces
    • Selenium tests for deleted-property-handling
    • Selenium tests for multiline references
    • Selenium tests for add-sitelinks-from-client
    • Selenium tests for Entity-Selector-as-Searchbox
    • Selenium tests for language-table
    • Implemented in-process caching for entities
    • Lua support to access the repo data and implement getEntity (so you can use stuff like entity = mw.wikibase.getEntity("Q1459") in Lua modules)
    • rebuildTermSearchKey is now ready for production (this still needs to be run but once done it will make search case-insensitive)
    • Improved error reports from the API
    • Ground work for better edit summaries from the API
    • Added a table of content to item pages
    • Added debug functionality to be able to investigate why it takes longer than it should for Wikidata changes to show up on recent changes and watchlists on Wikipedia
    • Finished implementation of References-UI
    • Implemented GUID generator in JavaScript
    • Worked on fixing a bug related to deleted properties where the UI would display wrong information
    • Minor fixes/additions to the JS datamodel implementation
    • Minor bugfixes in Statements-UI
    • More work on RDF export
  • Discussions/Press
  • Events
  • Other Noteworthy Stuff
  • Did you know?
    • If you add a Babel box to your user page Wikidata will show you items and descriptions in other languages you speak as well without you having to switch the language
    • Want to know which items use a certain property? Try the “what links here” link on a property page

Same sort

Hello, I think I need your help, in case Kevin doesn't answer me (again): you mentioned "those contentious areas", and I strongly desire to know what areas they are, so that I can avoid them thoroughly, whether as an admin or not. Looking at the logs[14], I see that I'm being criticised for one (non-)deletion out of ~400, one protection out of 12 only (I hate protecting) and one pseudo-RfC out of N I closed (with generally positive response). There's no talk on the bulk of the work (not that I drown RC with tons of patrolling actions), of course, but that's normal; I don't think however that avoiding all non-routine tasks is the point being suggested. I would also not consider it fair to ask admins to leave colleagues alone in their tough decisions: a mistake I realised we must really be careful to avoid when we lost a wonderful steward as Kylu; and something we may also be seeing in action in these days, even with experienced Meta-Wiki users that don't feel entirely free to express their opinions because they have better things to do than risking being harassed by some "regulars" or being outed on some website.
In conclusion, I think I should promise (myself and others) to avoid 1) protections, 2) a subset of RfX that have some topic in common... but which topic? I seem to see some pattern, but I fear stating the wrong one (and being accused of insincere excuses and whatnot, as praxis); please help me identify it, because people are being very reticent and I'm getting tired with maieutics. Thank you very much, Nemo 00:45, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

We all have to find our own comfort space, and I don't feel comfortable saying aspects that you do are right or wrong, as we make decisions on the facts that we personally see and interpret at a point of time, though my opinion may agree or disagree with your opinion or your decision. So what follows is what I can say is what I do, or what I consider as a good practice.

If I have expressed an opinion, then I really really really try not to close/block/... it; if I had a strong opinion, then never. If it has to be closed/blocked/..., I pass it on, or seek out a collective opinion for closure, and the more public the better. If it doesn't, not my problem. If I am in doubt, I don't. Blocks, I simply never block an established editor without a personal notice to some effect (emergencies aside). Basic psychological theory has a heuristic that one bad act takes more than three good acts to recompense, and bad experiences/interactions are generally remember for longer. Here I see that you are being crucified for a handful of what others have considered bad acts among the hundreds of good, and now you are battling a perception. So it is not a battle of logic, but one of feeling. Personally I am learning (though not perfectly), that when I apologise, I just do that. I don't try to mitigate an apology with why I did something, some justification, I sense that people see that as a lessening of an apology. Of course, how one words an apology, or for what one apologises can differ from saying that all your actions were wrong. Don't have dumb arguments with argumentative idiots, they beat you for experience. Agree to disagree. If you think that there is compromise, then determine where you are getting grief, and let the community keep the grief. Re contentious that was a generic reference, not a specific reference but it relates to above, and it is the grey line, not a black one. Re hyenas and vultures, yes; it is a problematic issue, and one for which the community is going to have a few issues navigating properly and safely. — billinghurst sDrewth 09:31, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply, I've thought a bit on it.
Your point on (strong) opinions is a good one, and in principle I've always shared it. I'm trying to dig in my memory whether I ever had some strong opinion on some RfX I closed here on Meta, or on some admin action I made, and I couldn't remember any. So I've checked 8 RfCs I closed, and verified that I didn't bother at all about them. I've also read my protection log, and I found only one contentious protection: a proposal whose text I didn't care about, to the point that I'm accused of removing a text that I had inserted myself, speak of irony; however I did have a strong opinion on the two parties, i.e. that they needed to discuss first, and as I said I was wrong in using my tools to force them too. I've also checked my block log and I see my blocks have always been about some rampant dirty fight between two parties and that in each instance they ended up affecting both and making both unhappy... had I had strong opinions, my problem would be called bipolar disorder.
On apologies you're correct, but after all I've not seen anyone apologising. Sadly, I'm unable to lie and say that I've not thought deeply about things I did, when it's not true: probably my mistake is of insufficient wikipolitics and rhetoric, and when mediating between two gangs one should try to convince at least one that he's championing them, or – short of this – have both of them against him at the next turn. In the end, the strong opinion I have about such battles is that they're very boring and they make this wiki way less tidy than I'd like it to be... your advice on strong opinions convinces me that I should refrain from intervening, ignore the kindergarten (and those who criticise this wiki because of it) and let the parties exhaust each other, or some less bored sysop to do something.
Thanks, this has been helpful. --Nemo 19:10, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Affected by block

Hi, it appears I am being transiently affected by a block at the English Wiktionary. I received the following error message:

You do not have permission to edit this page, for the following reason:

Your IP address has been blocked on all wikis.

The block was made by Billinghurst (meta.wikimedia.org). The reason given is Open proxy: to replace a series of single IP blocks.

Start of block: 16:57, 15 March 2013
Expiry of block: 16:55, 15 March 2014

You can contact Billinghurst to discuss the block. You cannot use the "Email this user" feature unless a valid email address is specified in your account preferences and you have not been blocked from using it. Your current IP address is 220.255.2.169. Please include all above details in any queries you make.

I've encountered this problem before, and it seems to be due to something that my ISP (SingTel) does. — Cheers, JackLee talk 17:38, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Removed. Apologies about that, though there has been a fair bit of spambot activity from within the range. I have improved our notes for the IP range, however, it is just as likely to have the block reimposed by others if the rate of spam continues. Ping again if it reoccurs. — billinghurst sDrewth 03:00, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
OK, thanks! — Cheers, JackLee talk 11:07, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

Can I exempted from blocks? I believe this was done for me at the English Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Commons. — Cheers, JackLee talk 16:43, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

Removed the block here too, that was an old one from May last year. You can apply for exemption, though I am hoping that we can prevent the addition, which is the preferred solution (more global). — billinghurst sDrewth 16:49, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
Thankls for the email. There was also a local anon-only block that I can see (and have removed), otherwise, the best I can think if you are having meta issues, is that a 24 hour block is in place for a blocked user account. Maybe head over to SRG and make an application. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:29, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi

Hi, can you please take a look at here? I guess, our Stewards are busy, but we need to solve this problem. Thanks.Gomada (talk) 13:18, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

These issues all require delicacy, research, care and consensus, and within the boundaries in which stewards are allowed to act. All of these take time. This matter has been addressed at one of the Steward request pages, and it will be managed from there. — billinghurst sDrewth 14:06, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

Wikidata weekly summary #50

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
  • Development
    • Rolled out new code on wikidata.org. The new stuff you probably care about is:
      • Improved references. They can now have multiple lines. This should make references much more useful. You can now have one reference with for example values for each of the properties "book", "author", "page" to describe one source.
      • Fixed the prev/next links in diff view (bugzilla:45821)
      • d:Special:EntitiesWithoutLabel now lets you filter by language and entity type
    • Widget to add language links on the Wikipedias directly: added setting to enable/disable it per wiki and made it available for logged-in users only
    • Widget to add language links on the Wikipedias directly: improved layout / size
    • Made it so that the “edit links” link on Wikipedia is also shown when the corresponding item only has a link to this one language and no other languages
    • Submitted improved Apache config patch to make wikidata.org always redirect to www.wikidata.org, which is awaiting code review and deployment.
    • Improved the script that is responsible for taking Wikidata changes to the Wikipedias
    • Added a few ways to better debug the script responsible for taking Wikidata changes to the Wikipedias. This should help with investigating why some changes take way to long to show up on the Wikipedias.
    • Started work on automatically adding edited items to the user’s watchlist (according to preferences)
    • Finished script for rebuilding search keys, so we can finally get case insensitive matches in a lot of places
    • Support for multi-line references in diff view
    • Selenium tests for inclusion syntax
    • Improved parser function (that will be used to access Wikidata data on the Wikipedias) to accept property ID or label
    • Increased isolation of data model component to increase clarity and visibility of bad dependencies
    • Worked on schema access in the SQLStore (of the query component)
  • Discussions/Press
  • Events
    • 3rd Media Web Symposium 2013
    • Wikidata trifft Archäologie
    • SMWCon Spring NYC
  • Other Noteworthy Stuff
  • Did you know?
    • When you edit a statement there is a little wheel in front of the text field. This lets you choose between “custom value”, “unknown value” and “no value”. “No value” means that we know that the given property has no value, e.g. Elizabeth I of England had no spouse. “Unknown value” means that the property has a value, but it is unknown which one -- e.g. Pope Linus most certainly had a year of birth, but it is unknown to us.

Please Unblock me

Dear Billinghurst, I was blocked on Hindi wikipedia on 20-03-2013 and request you to please unblock me. I am writing to you because my talk page is also blocked and you are already familiar with my case to some extent.

Short description

You may also like to see this again

At present there are four administrators on Hindi Wiki. Two of them are dormant and the other two are super active and acting arbitrarily. A move for voting to recall Bill william compton, one of the super active admins is in progress for abuse of power. A majority of users have voted for the move. Only two users SeanZCampbell and Hunnjazal, the other superactive admin have voted against the move. In the meantime, a checkuser request revealed that SeanZCampbell is a sock puppet of user:Lovysinghal who was crucial in getting Bill William Compton and Hunnjazal elected as admin few months back. In the name of 'action', Hunnjazal blocks SeanZCampbell forever, blocks me for three months AND does not take any action against Lovysinghal. (But after some opoosition, after two days, blocks Lovysinghal for three months.)

I was blocked improperly

I feel that blocking me is in bad faith and a misuse of administrative tool by Hunnjazal because-

1) Leave everything apart, Hunnjazal himself writes on discussion page at 13:50, 19 March 2013 (UTC) - 'this is last warning' and blocks me at 04:13, 20 March 2013 (UTC) though I have NOT written a single word on Hindi wiki in after his 'last warning'. There was no discussion, no comments from any other person in this time period!. He forgot his own words in the changed situation.

2) As I have mentioned above, an important voting is in progress. This motion was moved by me. Hunnjazal is the only person opposing the motion (the other person opposing the motion was SeanZCampbel who was proved a puppet). By blocking, he wants to shut my mouth forcefully and frighten other users by this action.

3) In this case he is an 'involved admin' and he himself blocks me. This dispute was not related to discussion on any article or any policy matter. This 'personal allegation' and counter allegation arised during the debate on recalling Bill William Compton, an admin and close associate of Hunnnjazal for abuse of powers. From the very first day of this motion, Hunnjazal is a active party in this debate. He himself should not have used his admin powers to block me in this case.

4) The timing of the action against me shows that it was malafied. It was just after the checkuser confirmed that SeanZCampbell was a puppet of Lovysinghal. Lovysinghal is a close associate of Hunnjazal. When my initial request for checkuser was rejected, Hunnjazal issued a biting comment to me that the request was rejected because my intensions were bad. Hunnjazal was afraid that if I was not blocked, it would be very difficult to 'save' Lovysinghal and that would mean a great blow to their 'gang'. In fact blocking me was their 'facesaving' exercise.

5) Blocking me is a huge loss to Wikipedia. I am a Hindi wiki editor since 2006 and autopatrolled editor since 2007. I have contributed the maximum number of articles (made manually) on Hindi wiki. There are hardly 5 active editors on Hindi wiki.

Request

I appeal to be unblocked for I was blocked by Hunnjazal who clearly has conflict of interest with me as explained above. I also request to remove Hunnjazal from administratorship for acting improperly on a partisan way, using uncivil and biting language in the discussion, misuse of administrative tools and making misleading and half true statements in the discussions. -- अनुनाद सिंह (talk) 13:53, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

Stewards fulfil a technical role and are generally unable to intervene in local independent wikis as administrators; we have no arbitration role. I am definitely unable to remove your block. — billinghurst sDrewth 04:20, 23 March 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for the advice.-- अनुनाद सिंह (talk) 09:54, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Wikidata weekly summary #51

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
  • Development
    • The first 11 Wikipedias can now include data from Wikidata in their articles (If you want to see it in action see the infobox at it:Torino)
    • Worked on automatic summaries for statements
    • Worked on making properties accessible from the client using their label so you can use {{#property:executive director}} instead of {{#property:p169}} for example
    • Made qualifiers ready for the next deployment (Please test. See details further down.)
    • Selenium tests for qualifiers
    • Fixed some issues related to QUnit testing
    • Worked on improved handling and code design of multiple snak lists in the UI (qualifiers, references)
  • Discussions/Press
  • Events
    • Newline 2013
  • Other Noteworthy Stuff
    • We’re currently carefully monitoring performance after the deployment of phase 2 on the first 11 Wikipedias. There seem to be a few small issues. As soon as they are resolved we'll deploy on English Wikipedia. All other Wikipedias are planned to follow very soon after that.
    • Bye and a big thank you to Anja, Silke, Jens and John who are leaving the development team at the end of the month and will work on other cool things. You’ll be missed!
    • Ever had any doubt about the possibilities of Wikidata? Talk to Wiri!
    • We worked on reducing the time it takes for Wikidata edits to show up in the Wikipedias and made some progress. Daniel posted an analysis
    • We started running a script on the database in order to make search on Wikidata case-insensitive. This should be finished in a few days and then search should be more useful.
    • In addition to the above we have rolled out a new search box that suggests items. This should also make finding things on Wikidata a lot easier for you.
    • We’re making some progress with Internet Explorer 8 support but there are a lot of issues with it (some outside our control). It’s unclear at the moment how much we can improve it still without spending an unjustified amount of time on it. You can follow the progress at bugzilla:44228
    • Edits are now auto-confirmed for users with more than 50 edits and account age 4 days: bugzilla:46461
    • Do you need old-style interwiki links for a sister project for example? This is for you
    • The Wikimedia Foundation applied as a mentoring organisation for Google Summer of Code again. We have proposed some Wikidata projects for students to take up if the Foundation is accepted again. At least 2 other organisations that applied also propose Wikidata ideas. More details on that once we know which organisations are accepted.
    • Denny hacked together a tree of life based on data from Wikidata
    • Wikidata was added to wikipulse
    • A template to retrieve data from Wikidata if no local value is set
  • Did you know?
  • Open Tasks for You
    • See note at the end of this weekly summary
    • Help test qualifiers (m:Wikidata/Notes/Data model primer#Qualifiers - see also example statements there) on the test wiki so we can roll it out with the next release
    • Did you file a bug report for Wikidata or did someone else do it for you? Please take a minute to check if it is still valid. (Thanks for filing it btw!)
    • Add some missing descriptions to those items with the same label?
    • Hack on one of these

Could I have 2 mins of your time? As I’ll be working on some other projects for Wikimedia Germany as well from now on the time I can spend on Wikidata will be reduced. This means I’ll have to figure out what is useful to spend time on. If you’re reading this could you let me know for example on this discussion page? Also if you have ideas how to improve the weekly summaries please post them. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk)

Blacklisting of alpao.com

Dear Billinghurst,

It seems that you blacklisted Alpao.com because of spamming. I added alpao.com as an external links of Adaptive optics in all languagues. I really felt that it might be interesting (and some of our competitor did the same). Sorry for that !

Could you please help me on my followings questions:

- could you please undo blacklisting of alpao.com for at least the company page that I am creating ?

- could I use alpao.com for an external link on Adaptive optics ? I think (I may be wrong) that it is in respect of Wikipedia:External links

Thank you very much in advance and sorry for the trouble. --Hardoche (talk) 15:50, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

I am comfortable removing the link from the blacklist, and I thank you for starting the conversation, it gets very difficult communicating about additions when they are by an IP address.

I do not believe that the straight external linking is appropriate for a general article about adaptive optics to the webpage of any commercial entity (your company or any other manufacturer). If the article had a manufacturing component, then I could see that if your site had authoritative text, that it could be linked to it as a reference. Be very aware of conflict of/vested interest, and each wiki will have an internal version of their guideline about such, eg. w:en:Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. The Wikipedias are pretty 'hot' on CoI, and in these cases our advice is to be more conservative, than more radical in an approach. To be open about it, and seek opinion on additions. — billinghurst sDrewth 04:46, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

domain removed from blacklist. Good luck with navigating the fine line. — billinghurst sDrewth 04:54, 23 March 2013 (UTC)
Thank you very much for your advices and for your help on this ! I might ask you a little more help on this. Your experience and objectivity could be very useful. Thank you again and in advance. --Hardoche (talk) 08:46, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
Thank you again for your previous support.
Do you think that the page ALPAO (here) is good enough for starting to publish it ?
Thank you for your help and in advance.
--Hardoche (talk) 14:46, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
Unfortunately I am time poor at the moment. At each major wikipedia there is generally a review process available, and it is better that that is utilised anyway. For English Wikipedia it is en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Help desk Billinghurst (talk) 13:20, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

Wikidata weekly summary #52

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
  • Development
    • The first year is over. Thank you everyone for being amazing and helping to build Wikidata and making it more than we could possibly have hoped for already. <3
    • Put a lot of work into improved support for Internet Explorer 8
    • Worked on improving recent changes code in client
    • Finished valueview refactoring. Created new extension “ValueView”
    • Implemented string formatter
  • Discussions/Press
  • Events
    • upcoming: GLAM-Wiki 2013
  • Other Noteworthy Stuff
    • Deployment of phase 2 on English Wikipedia is currently planned for April 8. The remaining Wikipedias are scheduled for April 10. As usual this might change if we run into problems along the way.
    • There is now a page showing the current lag for changes propagating to the Wikipedias so they can show up in watchlists and recent changes for example. This should ideally be in the range of a few minutes. Right now it is higher because of some abnormally high bot activity but decreasing. Should be down to a few minutes soon.
    • There’s now a badge you can add to Wikipedia articles to indicate there is data about it on Wikidata
    • We hit Q10000000
    • A Wikidata item in the wild ;-)

  • Open Tasks for You

Based on feedback for last week’s call for comments we will continue this newsletter. However more community help will be needed. From now on they’ll be drafted at d:Wikidata:Status updates/Next and your help is very welcome.

Wikidata weekly summary #53

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
  • Development
    • Got some external professional review of our code and architecture and started working on their feedback
    • Worked on reducing the dispatch lag (the time it takes for changes on Wikidata to be sent to the Wikipedias for display in watchlist, recent changes and to purge affected pages)
    • Worked on using Redis for job queue to improve the lag situation even further
    • Created new Wikibase Query extension for phase 3 functionality
    • Autocomments & Autosummaries for SetClaim module
    • Worked on the GeoCoordinate parser
  • Events/Press
    • right now: GLAM-WIKI 2013
  • Discussions
  • Other Noteworthy Stuff
    • Deployment of phase 2 on the remaining Wikipedias was delayed because of a high lag of changes being propagated to the Wikipedias. The lag has been reduced considerably now and is going down even more. The new date for deployment will not be next week because there are other large changes on Wikimedia infrastructure scheduled that we do not want to interfere with. It will hopefully happen very soon after that though.
    • Next code update on wikidata.org is planned for Wednesday. This should include qualifiers and bugfixes.
    • There will probably be a short outage/read-only for wikidata.org on Tuesday (database is being switched to MariaDB)
    • If you're a student and interested in coding on Wikidata consider applying for Google Summer of Code.
    • There is a new user right: property creators
    • There is now a page to request deletion of a property
    • We now have Bureaucrats
    • Reasonator was improved and extended (1 2)
  • Open Tasks for You

Based on feedback for last week’s call for comments we will continue this newsletter. However more community help will be needed. From now on they’ll be drafted at d:Wikidata:Status updates/Next and your help is very welcome.

  • Development
    • Dispatch lag is now down to 0 so changes should show up very quickly on the Wikipedias in watchlists and recent changes
    • wikidata.org now always redirects to www.wikidata.org. This should among other things solve the issue where people were not able to edit when on wikidata.org (bugzilla:45005)
    • Fixed weird blocked-user/protected-page handling in UI (bugzilla:45140)
    • Final meetings for the external professional review of our code and architecture. They were quite happy with the quality of the codebase and gave useful tips for improvements
    • Worked on automatic summaries for editing claims
    • Investigation of different JavaScript frameworks dealing with date and time

Hey

I don't know where to request the "right to vanish" thing. So I just picked you, a steward. I'm requesting to vanish completely from English Wikipedia. Is it possible that in English Wikipedia, Trongphu will appear as it is not a register name? All related pages to my user name shall be deleted. I would like to continue contribute in other projects except English Wikipedia, it is the only project where I want to vanish. I'm a great contributor of Vietnamese Wikipedia and Wiktionary for many years (currently I'm a sysop at Wiktionary). However, due to culture differences and misunderstanding and my bad temper which led to my permanently ban on English Wikipedia. I admitted my fault of using bad language but well apparently they don't have mercy on me after I have been banned for over a year already. My contribution in Vietnamese community speaks for my words. I hope you will fulfill my request. I really don't see any reasons how it can hurt anyone. Thanks!Trongphu (talk) 07:56, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Hmm, we cannot make any account vanish. It isn't my area of speciailty, so I am going to do is ask a steward with an English Wikipedia focus to address this better than I. What may be able to do is dissociate your enWP account, but I am not certain. — billinghurst sDrewth 08:09, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
Give me a head up on my talk page on what solution you and the other steward come up to fulfill my request. Or I will check this page occasionally.Trongphu (talk) 08:38, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
I'm sorry, the current practice on enwiki is that only users in good standing can vanish. He would need to email arbcom at en:Special:EmailUser/Ban Appeals Subcommittee to get a vanish. MBisanz talk 12:13, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Invadibot

Hi, Billinghurst.

I've been noticed that you have blocked the bot for a week. The task "fixing links to Wikimedia projects and applying protocol-relative URLs" has been stopped, and I think the bot could be unblocked so it can continue fixing double redirects in this project (see its tasks scope).

There are many doubts about this topic, so I'm going to create a page in Invadibot's user space to define this task with more details. Unfortunately, I'm too busy, and I won't be able to finish it today (in any case, I will let you know when this happens).

Regards, and thank you very much for your help. --invadinado (TALK - SUL) 11:46, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Okay, I have released the block. With regard to task, I had previously left some notes against the bot request about the reasons why. The issue where it upset COIBot has been resolved, so that is no longer a concern. I am not certain why the bot is editing archive pages and would feel that any page headed with {{archive header}} should be left (personal opinion). — billinghurst sDrewth 12:07, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello. I am writing to you on behalf of a Tamil Wikipedian who could not log into Hindi Wikipedia due to some technical glitch. I request you to either directly help in solving this problem or please refer this to a person who can be of some help. Thanks in advance. IPBE through your rangeblock??

en:User talk:Blackgaia02 has been caught in your rangeblock of IP 112.207.35.0/24. Although not entirely in good standing (currently on a "last chance" unblock after edit-warring) this is a long-serving user, and is unlikely to be the target of your rangeblock since that is aimed at a spambot. Do you have any objection if I give the user IPBE? JohnCD (talk) 08:09, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, ignore this, I have just read the note at the head of this page. I will ask at Steward requests/Global permissions. JohnCD (talk) 08:19, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
Having read that page, it seems it is for global permissions, and being local this request would be referred back to en:wp admins, i.e. me. So I have gone ahead and granted IPBE. If that was the wrong thing to do, please let me know; otherwise, forget it, and apologies for bothering you. JohnCD (talk) 08:48, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
Gday. Asking for comment is totally okay, I am more trying to have stewards' requests filed, seen and documented in that place, not tucked away in my archives. The block is definitely not aimed at your person, it is very specifically aimed at spambots, I found 20+ at two wikis. You have done exactly as we would have wanted. If there is improvements that we can make to our documentation, or suggestions that we can make to enWP's, that feedback would be fantastic. — billinghurst sDrewth 09:53, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

stopforumspam.com blacklist

Hello, if you find the list useful can you please update the manual at mw:Manual:Combating spam#$wgProxyList? There are very varying opinions on its effectiveness: most claim it's completely useless and a waste of CPU (Dantman, Thingles, others) but we have no clear indication about it. --Nemo 08:43, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

I am not sure that I can speak to it as part of an automated function as a 'binary spam prevention switch', all I can speak to is its usefulness as an information source as complementary and independent reference. Hello. After the consensus of RfC, regarding the user-rights on Hindi Wikipedia, some major changes were made on hi Wiki. But surprisingly, filemover and rollbacker rights were disabled. Can you please help in restoring these rights in wider interest of the maintenance and further development of the Hindi Wikipedia? Regards, Hindustanilanguage (talk) 07:17, 15 June 2013 (UTC).

The process that your community should undertake is to launch a local RFC and have a consensus on the rights that are right for your community. The RFC that went about removing rights may or may be informative to the process. — billinghurst sDrewth 09:20, 15 June 2013 (UTC)
These rights were enabled on hiwiki with the community-wide support (e.g. here), and were removed without notifying local members or admins. I don't understand - why should we engage in an another conversation just to ameliorate mistakes of steward(s)?--Bill william compton (talk) 10:21, 15 June 2013 (UTC)
You asked for my advice and received it. Those who make configuration changes to the backend will want to see a community consensus; and after such a period of time I don't see what is the issue or the challenge with such a conversation taking place at your wiki. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:13, 15 June 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for your prompt attention and advice. And I really didn't mean to sound snarky.--Bill william compton (talk) 15:16, 15 June 2013 (UTC)

Sysop abuse on ku.wikt

Hi Billinghurst
could you look here? Thanks--George Animal (talk) 12:42, 24 June 2013 (UTC)
Stewards do not have an arbitrative role crosswiki, we simply fulfil a technical role for the wikis, and otherwise where no bureacrats per community, we fulfil that role. You point to a community discussion in which we have no individual pull, and our opinions are no more valuable than any others. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:04, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

Your message??

Hi, I saw your message, and I saw that you counted my global request as "Not Done" after your talk with Vituzzu. I don't know if you know exactly what the situation was or how it happened, I wasn't vandalizing in those pages and the whole thing was my fault for not making myself clear. I actually reached an agreement with Administrators in es.wiki, en.wiki and it.wiki if Vituzzu actually told you about that, and as you said, I can totally guarantee you that I will never do the mistakes I did. I appreciate you trying to protect Wikipedia and being honest in what you are doing, but I don't think that you know exactly how the whole thing started. (68.33.8.192 21:06, 2 June 2013 (UTC))

Hi again, its been a while I wrote the note above and I don't know if you actually received the message, please reply when you get the chance, thank you. (68.33.8.192 19:22, 16 June 2013 (UTC))

Thank you Billinhurst and I feel I should be honest with you. And I was wondering if you can do a quick favor for me... Thank you :) (68.33.8.192 01:26, 18 June 2013 (UTC))
If there are stewards requests they belong on the stewards' pages. If there are meta admin requests they belong on the meta admin pages. Not sure that I do or don't do favours, I just do my part of the steward or admin tasks that are to be done.
Yes, I know and I respect that, but can't you do a quick favor to just unblock me and block me again?? can I trust you to make an exception? please.. (68.33.8.192 20:04, 20 June 2013 (UTC))

Generally blocks will be local first, so please request it at the wiki of concern. Apart from that I do not entertain page blocks on my user talk page, and all block requests belong at SRGP and they will need a full explanation of why a block is required. — billinghurst sDrewth 10:07, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

AbuseFilter at de-WB

Hi, you added b:de:Special:AbuseFilter/14 two weeks ago. Normally, this filter is more comprehensive than b:de:Special:AbuseFilter/9. Nevertheless, some spams were not detected by filter 14, but by filter 9. Please, check entry 1117 and entry 1089. You may improve your filter so that I can delete my filter. -- Juetho (talk) 06:31, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

I am happy for you to add that component that caught your two spam to the filter that I put in place on request. As that it more likely to get false positives I am wary having that where I am not actively watching the filter. If you make that change, then please just make a specific note, and if I ever come and update the filter, I will know to readd that little component. — billinghurst sDrewth 14:14, 2 July 2013 (UTC)
I checked the filter's content and found out that there's a little lack in the source code. One should look for an arbitrary count of characters (zero or more) between <br> and the tested variety of text:
"(<br>){2,}.*(here is my| and so on.
Additionally, I added .*\[?https?:// at the end of this part.
We weren't looking to catch all renditions of multiple usage of <br>, we were targeting for specific use of the characters that relate to the spam, plus once you identify two, that there is three or more is purely academic. The broader you make a rule, the more you can get in the way of false positives. We generally haven't had https used for spam, and it is less likely that it will be the case, spammers are interested in traffic.
Furthermore, I don't understand why you checked the option "abusefilter-edit-action-warn" as well as "abusefilter-edit-action-disallow". Is there any reason to send a double message? Primary, it's important to disallow, not to warn. -- Juetho (talk) 14:53, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
It was added in the developing process of the filter, we started with tag, then went to warn, then block. I kept it in the process in case there are legitimate users caught by the filter, so they have a slim opportunity to amend, and I have a chance to fix false positives. Beyond that it gives an indication on whether it is people trying legitimate edits, people spamming, or bots, and the persistence. So correct that it is not necessary, it is just for interest. Thanks for the feedback. — billinghurst sDrewth 23:55, 15 July 2013 (UTC)

Translation

Dear Billinghurst
As I a translator I have been asked to translate Admin activity review/2013/Notice to communities into Maltese. As we are a small community and are not able to translate everything we have to be selective. Do you know if this translation will appear on mt.wikipedia or not? I am asking you because a notice on the same subject was signed/posted by yourself and I am hoping that you would know.
Thanks and best regards Leli Forte (talk) 13:30, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi, it depends on whether mt.wikipedia already has an inactivity policy (as the text says, it will be only sent to wikis where we don't know that they have an inactivity policy). Currently none is listed at Admin_activity_review/2013/Data#mt.wikipedia.org. --MF-W 14:25, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

Ages-old trouble about a WP core algorithm (version compare)

Hi Billinghurst,

sorry I have to confess I couldn't make sure you're the person who would like to be bugged with this (I didn't know better how to find out).

That said, do you think you could have just one look at this and find someone who would care? This may be my last try. TIA, --Chris (217.81.189.242 21:36, 30 July 2013 (UTC))

P.S.: No disc required about me being a year-long ethical IP, that's just the choice I've made.

It is a mediawiki (application) issue, not something peculiar to WP. In fact I have no idea upon what the diff engine is built. Best places to take up the conversations would be at one or more of mw:, their mailing list wikitech-l or start a thread on bugzilla:. There may be someone who will pay attention, however, I have my suspicions that not many will consider it more than an annoyance. — billinghurst sDrewth 22:58, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

… and on some things we will disagree into the future. I strongly believe in the right of a "fair go". So for any person who is here for genuine reasons, I believe that I will agree with them more than I will disagree with them. So looking for common points, and remembering the genuine reasons for people being here (helps|reminds|prods) me to maintain balance. Internal note to self: "It isn't all about me. People's opinions are more than allowed, they should be encouraged, whether I like them or not."

For us, we disagree on approach, we sometimes disagree on the vehicle or the destination, though we passionately agree on the principles of the provision of free information. So I think that we would both rather see our passions harnessed for the good of the principle or a project, though we probably shouldn't be working together. Difficult, but I am okay with that. — billinghurst sDrewth 06:05, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

About Wikisource - when I listed people with Poetlister, it was more to get accurate information on who did what than necessarily saying this person was completely responsible. I've been stalked by that guy on many, many of his names, and there are two accounts floating around that I am pretty sure are still his. I am not the only one who was targetted by him, and he was using Wikisource to do it (if you remember the emails). Ottava Rima (talk) 13:59, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

Hello,

it seems you have blocked me from editing on wiki, so I wanna know why. I am updating the page of chess Grandmaster Harikrishna Pentala https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pendyala_Harikrishna and thats the only thing I am editing on wikipedia. Today when I wanted to updating his currect FIDE rating, this is what showed:

You are currently unable to edit Wikipedia. Editing from your IP address (109.111.234.162) has been blocked (disabled) on all Wikimedia wikis until 12:42, 26 August 2014 by Billinghurst (meta.wikimedia.org) for the following reason:

Cross-wiki spam: spambot: farbyte spam This block began on 12:42, 26 August 2013

I dont understand what I did, and I am not some wikipedia genius, I am only updating new tournaments he played and rating changes.

It is not you, nor your IP address. The issue is your provider which has spambots operating within the IP range and seemingly doing nothing about it. Checking

Hi Billinghurst, thank you for your check here. As you said: (there are) two unused accounts created on the same IP and other similarities, is that means that those accounts which are you checked are made from the same IP address and what exactly means other similarities. That user which is perhaps the same as user on en.wiki Ideabeach. I have no clue who to proof this, nor is my field of interest medieval history (on bs.wiki I rather writing about chemistry, geography etc.) but I have some clues that this person falsifying history making himself as descendant of Bosnian royal family (there is also private web page and facebook group but it's irrelevant to the subject). There were similar case back in February 2010 where user:Amsal@bs.wiki had battle at the same subject but then user:NJ.K.V. (as you said similar but not quit sock-puppet of nowadays user:Rtava) is blocked 'cause of other vandalism and inappropriate behavior. Just answer me what to do and is there any rule or any procedure to make this sneaky vandal stopped. Best regards--C3r4 (talk) 14:37, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

Following your question about a specific account, I have updated the CU commentary. It is a bit of a situation of chicken and egg to get increased CU surveillance,, however, if there are ongoing and specific issues of long term abuse (vandalism and suspected sockpuppetry), then in a language of your choice, we need to have written a lucid narrative of the issue. I feel that we are currently snapping at flies, which makes it hard to do checkuser, and to get stewards to start recording a case. At this stage, stewards are not maintaining cases of long term for bswiki, and that is probably due to that missing narrative, and once that is created then the stewards have the meta archives, and our private archives where non-public detailed data can be maintained. [Note: Stewards are reticent to keep non-public data unless there is a demonstrated reason that it should be maintained, and it sounds as though we are approaching that from your above explanation] — billinghurst sDrewth 15:14, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
Hi Billinghurst. I would like to request that you record a case, since the user continues with disruptive editing on bs.wiki. In the following I can summarize a few details that might be usable. You stated that Ideabeach is another account that was used by the same person (or at least from the same IP address). Ideabeach was blocked for disruptive editing and personal attacks against various admins. He also used another sockpuppet Reaubilya which was also blocked for similar behavior, and if I remember correctly was also suspected to be a sockpuppet. It is no coincidence that all these accounts, including bs:User:Rtava, have vandalized the same (and/or similar) pages, mostly about en:Ban Borić (bs:Ban Borić) and topics related to the Bosnian royal family. If we look at the dates of the contributios we see that Reaubilya has started editing at 6th of October and was finally blocked around the 15th of October. Ideabeach started editing at June 22nd, and was blocked around 15th of october. It is no surprise that on the 17th of October the user started editing with a new account Rtava on the 17th of October, after receiving an indefinite block on en.wiki. From the edits we can also see many similarities if we look at the changes of the article Ban Borić: bs.wiki and en.wiki. These changes have been reverted on en.wiki because the user used original sources and the proposed changes did not receive any consensus. The same story applies for the articles on bs.wiki, including previously seen personal attacks on other users but also revert wars.
I personally see enough reasons for a block, but it would probably be better to do this globally but also to record a case so that this user can be identified more easily in the future. -- Edinwiki (talk) 09:29, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
Update: Because the user continued with personal attacks against other users I had no other choice than to block him indefinitely. However, like I said, it might still be useful to record a case for possible future abuses. Regards. Edinwiki (talk) 14:44, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

I would like to put this post and I know it is provocative but it is response on statement the all accusations are made up.[16]

Holocaust denier

I will give just one example in the case of article about Luburić who established death camps in NDH. [17]

In this extreme POV article you dont see problem with this whitewash of death camps were around 20,000 children died:

Dozens of Serbian Orthodox orphans will be saved and placed into institutions at the expense of "Ustaška obrana" [18]

But for you exaggeration is in this sentence:

"Mass murder, deportation, crimes against humanity that have occurred in these camps makes Luburić major perpetrator of war crimes and genocide in the Ustasha regime." [19]

Is this also made up by communist? Are you responsible for you edits?--DobarSkroz (talk) 14:36, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Please don't come here picking a fight. I am not justifying anybody's edits, nor criticising any particular edit. Sorry if you see my post as picking a fight I was just asking question with example--DobarSkroz (talk) 15:01, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

If the user is problematic, then manage them, and ultimately block them, that is the process for dealing with problematic users, not restricting them by secondary means. Hi, Billinghurst, sDrewth, or whatever,

you denied my unblock request, but never explained why User:Mathonius's reason would be a valid reason to block me for 3 months at all wikis. Mathonius claimed the existence of a word "checkusertje", which just doesn't exist (see https://www.google.nl/search?q=checkusertje ), I removed the non-existing word, and told Mathonius about it and got blocked. --80.114.178.7 20:43, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

Take up your issue with Mathonius. There was no value in removing the block at that time with the amount of time left, hence letting it expire. — billinghurst sDrewth 08:38, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
Mathonius is a pseudonym, stalking and harassing me for using my name. Talking with them is impossible, talking to them got me blocked. See http://nl.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=checkuser&action=history --80.114.178.7 21:08, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
Of course there would be value: my contributions (as in content contributions to wiki sites, I don't hang out on IRC). --80.114.178.7 21:08, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for taking the time to answer at my talkpage, but I couldn't edit Steward requests/Global. That could be Mathonius' reason to block me at meta too (meta.wikimedia.org is exempt from global blocks for a reason); on nl.wikipedia it's a custom to block the talkpage of alleged sockpuppets (a great way to never hear from them until thet create a sockpuppet, which proves they are guilty of sockpuppetry). --80.114.178.7 23:51, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
If you are blocked globally and at meta then the process to get out of a block is to email stewards wikimedia.org. Note: I am not entering your battles of wikis and individuals, so you can stop tossing the assertions at me. — billinghurst sDrewth 01:46, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
I haven't been given permission to email stewards wikimedia.org, http://wikimedia.org/~stewards doesn't exist, so it would be hard to get the permission. The permission can be sent to mailto:erik+billinghurst+meta.wikimedia.org@selwerd.nl though. --80.114.178.7 22:43, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
Email means a traditional email from a mail client, or equivalent. The setup is for use when people are able to utilise the wiki system to contact us by other wiki means, or as an alternative to wiki means. — billinghurst sDrewth 03:28, 8 November 2013 (UTC)
How is an "email from a mail client" more traditional than an email from a telnet session? But most of all, why would any of that give me permission to email stewards wikimedia.org? I think that "when people are able to utilise the wiki system to contact us", they would have even less reason to send email to stewards wikimedia.org. It would be much easier if pseudonyms alleging to speak for stewards wikimedia.org would just unblock at meta.wikimedia.org (or just don't block there at all). --80.114.178.7 05:01, 8 November 2013 (UTC)
Here is a headline for you. You asked for information and direction, it is provided to you, then you start to pick pick pick. You can try and send an email or not, that is completely your choice. Like the rest of your opinions, you are welcome to have them, doesn't make them right. — billinghurst sDrewth 09:06, 8 November 2013 (UTC)
I didn't ask for information or direction, I came to discuss your IRC puppetry for Mathonius. There's no reason for me to send that email, because I can now edit Steward requests/Global. --80.114.178.7 19:50, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

My Global Account Issue

Hi

I'm a user of Arabic Wikipedia & others projects, my username was Azitony, few months ago I asked to Usurpate the username "علاء الدين" (Aladdin in Arabic), but two days ago I noticed that my username wasn't registered on Arabic Wikinews, so I checked my global account on Arabic Wikipedia and activated it, but I face a problem with Arabic Wikibooks and Arabic Wikisource as you can see here. The mentioned accounts doesn't belong to me and didn't make any changes.

I listed this issue in Arabic Wikipedia Village pump, and I've told that I should contact one of the hosts. and I selected you :).

Hope you help me with this issue, and thank you in advance. --Aladdin (talk) 13:49, 17 November 2013 (UTC)

Hmm, you can try and go through the local usurping processes at those wikis, to see if local crats (if they exist, will grant you those account names), or you can wait until the global account process takes place, in which case those accounts will be moved aside, and as you have the global account name, you will be able to accounts at the respective wikis. — billinghurst sDrewth 14:53, 17 November 2013 (UTC)
I contacted the local crat in Arabic Wikisource but Wikibooks doesn't have a crat! do I have to take any action or I just have to wait.--Aladdin (talk) 08:47, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
Then it is time to take it too Steward requests/SUL requests‎ where such requests are handled. — billinghurst sDrewth 11:38, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

Proposed removal of hockeyfights.com from the spam blacklist

Hi. You closed the discussion on this proposal without removing the domain from the blacklist. Was that your intention? It looks to me that both participants in the discussion were in favour of delisting.--SaskatchewanSenator (talk) 07:12, 10 November 2013 (UTC)

I closed it as not having progressed, so that was my intention. Dirk didn't remove it, and he could have as the blocking admin. The blacklisting was at the request of enWP, and they didn't come to the conversation, or were they invited. If you wish to have it progressed, get it whitelisted at enWP, or have the conversation joined by enWP populace. — billinghurst sDrewth 10:15, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
You're looking for more participants in the discussion? Is there a minimum participation requirement?--SaskatchewanSenator (talk) 21:57, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
There is no set in stone process, though for this situation it seems reasonable to progress by that means. For request where admins at a wiki requested the global block and at the wiki where you want to add the urls, I most definitely would want their feedback. In many cases we usually progress a removal request by getting a whitelist of the domain at the wiki of interest, in this case, engaging in discussion seems wiser. — billinghurst sDrewth 01:26, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
Ok. Thanks for the explanation. I'll discuss it at the en blacklist. Have you often seen the spam blacklist used to deal with copyright issues?--SaskatchewanSenator (talk) 04:28, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
spamblacklist should really just be called urlblacklist as it is just used to manage problematic urls irrespective of their nature. Just that spam is the main issue so it apparently got naming rights. — billinghurst sDrewth 05:36, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
Template:Tps .. I tend not to judge on things I blacklisted (independent review of my decisions?) unless it is very obvious (and for no-no cases of alleged copyright violations, I do want that second opinion) - I do comment on them, though. I suggested in the thread that maybe it should be delisted, the spam-part of the issue was small (though, at least one IP on a small scale), and maybe the copyright issue is now resolved. Feel like reviewing it, sDrewth? --Dirk Beetstra T C (en: U, T) 12:13, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
I did review it, and made no determination beyond that I wanted more input from enWP. I am not wanting the commentary of "We asked for a block, and you didn't seek our opinion before it was removed." — billinghurst sDrewth 13:38, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

Assistance needed

Hello, I'm Marius, an administrator at WIKISPECIES. I need your help to resolve an issue which which is affecting us there. The problem is with https://species.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Stho002, who is also a Wikispecies administrator. He abuses his role in the following ways:

  • He insults other contributors, and forces them to act according to his proper-devised rules. In general he makes lives miserable for those who disagree with his way. See [25] for an example.
  • He proposes major controversial format changes, which are unaccepted by the user majority, and than proceeds to implement them. See [26] for an example.
  • He is making Wikispecies unbalanced by producing thousands of New-Zealand (his native country) categories with no justification.
  • He monopolized Wikispecies, and acts as a dictator who makes the rules with no regard to others.
  • He was blocked from editing in the English Wikipedia due to his conduct there.

As you know, Wikispecies is a low-volume wiki, and the administrators there are unactive or unwilling to confront Stho002's abuses. Please, can you look into this and help up overcome this major problem? Mariusm (talk) 07:08, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

Wikispecies is a fully fledged community (27 admins, 12 'crats, +++) able to make its own determinations. The only means to progress this is via your community discussing matters put before it and having a negotiated decision. Such decisions could be to do noting, or there can be soft measures by imposing rules that the person is required to follow, to hard measures of a discussion around the user's ability to retain their admin bit, and to edit. Stewards have no authority to intervene in your community. In such a place, one can recommend that if such a discussion is started that it is not solely made with terms of a complaint, but also about the routes to a solution. Keep it nice ... don't have idiotic arguments with idiots, they will beat your for experience. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:09, 27 November 2013 (UTC)
To say that Wikispecies is "a fully fledged community" is a gross overreach. Of the 24 admins, 12 are inactive for a year or more, and 6 are not participating in the discussions at all. That leaves only 3 admins which is not adequate when an admin decides to force his way around. Can you recommend me please someone who can look deep into this issue, and who has the power to settle down such matters? Thanks, Mariusm (talk) 05:32, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
Fully fledged = admins and bureaucrats. Your community is the place for the discussion, it needs to be started and to be had. There is no individual nor group of people who can settle things down, that is the issue with independent communities; though if there are no 'crats active, and a discussion turned feral, ie. abuse of tools, etc. then one of the stewards may intervene. To note that there is no arbitrative role within WMF, nor at a crosswiki level, all such ArbComs are only at the largest wikis. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:06, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

Commons delinker blocked

I blocked "commons delinker", because it's work is often very counterproductive in small wikipedias like the one written in Saterland frisian language. When files on wikimedia commons are deleted, we can look for the "dead" file links on one of the special pages to search for a good replacement for the deleted file. But if someone or something removes the dead link, the small community of the Saterland frisian wikipedia hasn't got the personal capacities to find the lack of illustration without measurable delay, so commons delinker (also it might be useful in larger Wikipedia projects) is nothing else than a pest for small ones. So it must be blocked.

I understand that there are minor matters with the CommonsDelinkers, however, I believe that you have the wrong approach as you are not looking sufficiently broadly at the operations. You can watch the the contributions of CDL at your local wiki stq:Special:Contributions/CommonsDelinker and work from there (that list is not long). Surely that has to be better than increasingly having red links which are next to impossible to manage. To me it does not add to a quality product for your WP. Did a community consultation take place before you undertook the block of a universal bot? — billinghurst sDrewth 22:39, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi!

I'm just curious, did this edit turn out as intended? One of the sentences was cut off.

Have a good one! Nirmos (talk) 22:33, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

LOL, presumably not. Who knows now. I have just culled bits, thanks for the prod. — billinghurst sDrewth 23:31, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

Global Rollback

Greetings Billinghurst! I am perplexed about the Global Rollback rights. At my current stage, do I have a chance with earning the rights? Thank you! --Kind Regards, Goldenburg111 (talk) 23:32, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

Gday. Good to see that you are editing and hopefully we have resolved your inadvertent block issues. Global rollback is a right given to those who have demonstrated a cross-wiki spam involvement, usually through the Small Wiki Monitoring Team. Whether that is for you or not, I cannot say. With regard to your issues with your internet provider, you should be consider IP block exemption, at least as a local measure at your local wiki. — billinghurst sDrewth 23:45, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for your help. My kids accidentally started playing around and managed to edit the Wikimedia Projects harmfully, thank you. --Kind Regards, Goldenburg111 (talk) 23:48, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi Billinghurst, the Hindi Wikipedia community has unanimously decided to change the spelling of encyclopaedia in Hindi, which currently is ज्ञानकोष, on Wikipedia. A user reckoned that कोष in ज्ञानकोष implies a treasure of material wealth, while कोश indicates a treasure of words. I proposed the change in spelling and everyone conceded. This would affect the Hindi Wikipedia logo and trademark (एक मुक्त ज्ञानकोष). What is the best place to request such changes? I think there would be some legal implications.--Bill william compton (talk) 04:30, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

With regard to any implications, that would be best addressed to Philippe (WMF) (talk · contribs) and I would expect that he will delegate the next steps. With regard to the logo, just make the change, and upload with the appropriate licences so that WMF has the copyright. Probably worth doing the upload first and including the link to Philippe at the initial contact. — billinghurst sDrewth 08:56, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

IP block

Hi,

my IP is blocked at cs.wv. The IP is 89.24.182.66 and ID #44. Whats the problem? How can I edit?--Juandev (talk) 07:40, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

I believe that the block message is suitably specific about why there is a block. — billinghurst sDrewth 11:48, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

Home wiki: unable to determine

Hello,

On Special:CentralAuth/عراقي1 I get "Home wiki: unable to determine", why is that ? how to fix it ?. Thank you --العراقي (talk) 17:14, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

It is a result from renaming. It has no consequences and you don't need to worry about it. --MF-W 23:16, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

Global IP block exempt

Hi Billinghurst! I have seen your comment at the "Steward requests/Global permissions" page. Although I have IPBE on Chinese Wikipedia, I did not use it when not needed because when proxies are used the local sites are loaded slower and sometimes it's not very convenient. There were already some Chinese wikipedians granted global IP exemption, who have much less contributions than I have, but they did not face the same question you asked to me. I did not answer your question last time because you didn't explain what your specific concerns are, so I didn't know how to answer it. I thought your treatment was quite unfair and I still think it is. Could you tell me what is Global IP block exempt for? What is the policy???--Huangjinghai (talk) 06:03, 7 December 2013 (UTC)

There is no right to a global IP exemption, and you are not a heavy xwiki user that demonstrates the need. You have the right to ask local wikis for local IP exemption, so utilise that ability to request (as per my previous comment). — billinghurst sDrewth 07:57, 7 December 2013 (UTC)
The local administrators are not active at all, if I put a request there it will for sure be overlooked. I used to be active on more wikis, but since I changed my name on Chinese wikipedia, I could not change my name on smaller wikis such as Chinese Wikitionary until now, just because the administrators are all asleep. You said there is no right to Glabal IP exemption, but there are some users who have already be granted the global IP exemption, and their crosswiki activities are lower than mine. But you didn't say you have special concerns to them. I think it is extremely unfair, and I feel that I am discriminated. So could you give me a more exhaustive explain please?--Huangjinghai (talk) 11:35, 7 December 2013 (UTC)

Re: revert

Why was this problematic? The page it was loading has newer CSS than the revision you reverted it to. And, at least for me, popups has been working fine lately. PiRSquared17 (talk) 01:51, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

Why is it problematic? Sheesh, why do you think? Because the style stuff is not working for me (no box and transparency), and I am trying to work out what the heck is going on. That was the first place to start an investigation, as that is where the issue has been previously when there have been upgrades to nav pop-ups (bane of my life). I don't think that it is the import process, but it may be, or it may be that there has been an edit to the file. — billinghurst sDrewth 02:03, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
I have copied over the css, and that seems to have resolved my issue, though with caching it can be hard to tell, so I will leave it at that point for the while. I have seem the import of stylesheets to be problematic previously, and while I know that it should work, it clearly fails at times and is problematic. — billinghurst sDrewth 02:09, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
Okay. It seems like importing would work, but of course the style should just be copied here manually if it doesn't. I didn't notice anything broken, however, so maybe it is a problem with bits.wikimedia.org or your own cache? Or maybe it only worked for me because of my cache... Strange either way. PiRSquared17 (talk) 02:43, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
Regularly been an issue at enWS (for me) in a string of FF over a number of years. Never been able to resolve the import issue, always resolved it with a copy of the style. — billinghurst sDrewth 03:40, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

Request for reblock

Note, that I have asked to reblock the IP adress you have recently blocked at cs.wv. As this shared IP adress is blocked I cant edit that project and it cause me a lot of difficulties.--Juandev (talk) 17:06, 12 December 2013 (UTC)

The decision is with the csWV community; it is no longer with me, as I have said at the csWV link provided above. — billinghurst sDrewth 10:32, 13 December 2013 (UTC)

Admin rights

Hallo, Billinghurst! I was an admin of the Russian Wikiversity till September 2013. You did a result of my vote. In September I voluntary left the project and asked the user Ruslik0 to take away my admin rights. Now I would like to return them, but I can't begin a new vote because of low activity of users on the project. How can I return my rights? Thanks in advance. --Alexander Mikhalenko (talk) 05:11, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

Simply put a note to the ruWV community of the circumstances and your wish to have the bit returned, and leave it for several days. If there is no disagreement, then take it to SRP again.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:07, 26 December 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. --Alexander Mikhalenko (talk) 10:24, 26 December 2013 (UTC)
