Modification to the editing interface

As we all know, many people who are not native english speakers contribute to english language wikimedia projects. Given this, would it not be a good idea to upgrade the editing interface with a spell-checker? --Please respond Here. 16:21, 20 November 2011 (UTC) Spell checker is integrated to most browsers, you may need to install the relevant language. There are extensions like languagetool which also provide this.

unification of certain pages and tools

Once I requested on the forum to access one's contribs & one's talk pages' changes, and use userboxes, across wikis. It would also be good to for search and preferences to optionally work across wikis. When wikis share things like categories and projects, it might be good to see if any unification, such as automatic linking, can be made... maybe even for some regular pages if not already done.--Dchmelik 13:16, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

page that does not exist

On the Dutch wiki, a strange situation exists since June 1st. Apparently there is a page that should exist, but does not. See this page. The error message mentions we should ask local sysops to take a look at it, but two senior sysops haven't got a clue what to do. Can someone please advise on the actions that should be taken? Thank you very much! ElfjeTwaalfje (talk) 00:27, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Email failures

I have seen it in commons OTRS and en:wp oversight. When you copy/paste the email addresses the @ symbol is either changed or disappears. Is this just an ASCII issue or a WMF policy about emails? I think the commons one has been fixed but the oversight one is locked. and I don't know if this is the right forum but someone may wish to send a note to all projects to check emails if there is no policy against it. I didn't notice why my oversight email kept failing and an image donator in commons sent a few emails before they found the problem.Canoe1967 (talk) 00:58, 19 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Import a gadget from Spanish Wikipedia

In Spanish Wikipedia we have this Gadget. It show the history and all specials pages (like contributions) as a numbered list. I like this gadget and I think that it is a good tool. So I request an administrator add it in Speciaal:Voorkeuren> Uitbreidingen Special:Preferences > Gadgets > and in Spanish we have in "Interface". Or put this gadget like default changing it the dots. I like the two option (change). The description phrase is "Show the history and all specials pages as a numbered list." For questions, contact me. The translation of the Spanish word Excepciones is Exceptions.--Vivaelcelta (talk) 12:38, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Top page ( needs update with a new "1,000,000+" section

The Wikipedia top page ( ) has sections for 100+, 1000+, 10 000+, 100 000+, but by now it really should have a new 1000 000+ section on there — given that 3 languages have crossed this 1M article threshold (en/de/fr) and another 4 are due to in the near future (es/ru/it/pl), with another 2 in around four to six months (ja/pt), it seems a no brainer to have the new exponential size on there by now.
An important additional benefit of adding the section, is that it's also highly likely to incentivise contributors of the other language wiki's to consider working just that bit harder to get their language in the 'most popular wiki languages' group, which would also be great for the site's "50M article by July 2015" growth targets! It sounds like such a small thing, but I have worked on other sites where doing things like this really does make hardcore users (ie. editors on WP!) increase their site participation.
Dunno if this has been mentioned anywhere else, and I hope this is the right place to add this request (if not, do please head me to the correct talk page concerned, as it's been bugging me for quite some time!) Thanks. Jimthing (talk) 06:08, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Delete page

I want to remove my user page (to vanish) from Wikipedia in Spanish. I changed my user name on here and on the projects where I participe unless on the Wikipedia in Spanish, where I'm blocked. I don't ask to change my user name on there (unless it may be a way to vanish), I want to vanish on that wiki; I don't know if also I could stay on the other projects after that. Before writing this, I did an e-mail request and, the person who answered told me about this page. Also I asked to be deleted in that Wikipedia (so is asked on the local level) but, the last thing I know is that the blockage of the talk page is changed but not vanished (so request denied?)

It's because of personal reasons, I don't want to remain there and, for me that project can be closed (I want to unsuscribe from there). --Alys (talk) 23:06, 3 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Rule impossible to be fulfilled in the wiki-pt, what to do?

Can I ask for intervention in wiki-pt? At wiki-pt we have a rule impossible to be fulfilled: This rule say: to create an article of shopping, he must have "national or global importance" However, there are no reliable sources talking about "national or global importance" of malls. There are no "rankings of importance." Wanted by users, administrators shy away from giving answers on the subject. Meanwhile, some users take advantage of this rule badly formulated to erase all pages of malls. The person who created this rule in 2007 (a "discussion" where the entire community was omitted), has recognized that the rule which he himself created, is completely wrong: "THE RULE IS COMPLETELY INAPPLICABLE" (He made other posts at this topic, talking about this).

The problem is that the administration of Wiki-pt takes no positive attitude to solve the problem of rule (actually, it seems they are enjoying the rule be that bad, and for personal reasons, are leaving delete all malls because they "think" that whoever created the articles of malls are people wanting to do propaganda, which is presumption of bad faith, and the rule of Wikipedia is to presume GOOD faith), and still protects article erasers, which are crude and rude with all, making a "clique". Wiki-pt users don't know where to run, please help. 19:01, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia suggestions

  1. Make all words in articles lead to new page related to the word, this can be done with programming when click on any word from article would lead to new articles but text would remain the same and standard wiki link to new article would override it or usual words or phrases.
  2. In each edit in history make report vandalism or spam with short explanation.
  3. Auto-sign when user begins with : but if edits inside between : an signature wouldn't sign it.
  4. Wikibot that would automatically translate via Google Translate articles from English Wikipedia and save them to other Wikipedia's that could save more time in writing articles but only for new articles links and files would be copied by Wikibot and then replaced after translation.
  5. Shortcuts for edit summary for example m minor edit.
  6. When signature is changed automatically change all signature of user (I have seen that in RPG Maker games you can type name of player and that name is displayed in whole game).
  7. TTS Text to Speech like Ekho I have read that it is possible to record ones own voice only vowels and consonants it is about one MB large and can read any text. And other languages as well.
  8. Also pop up translation for words from Wiktionary and how much times articles were visited.
  9. Input methods embedded in Wiki editor like Chinese.
  10. Also when make next word in new row in Wikipedia is displayed in same row this can be a problem for writhing many words one below other.
  11. Perhaps some translator like Google Translate which is online or for Android there are not much free quality translators today except Google Translate.
  12. When users edit is reverted or changed by different user would notify the user in special notifications, this would help if user has hundreds or thousands of edits so that he doesn't need to search all pages.Watch page is only for some pages it would be useful to have most although user can ignore it if he wants.
  13. Ancient Egyptian Babel for language knowledge.
  14. Wiki template that would make active count users edits and articles.
  15. Pop up translation from Wiktionary when mouse over word would translate it to English or other languages.English Wiktionary has millions of words (most are inflections) and you can use free OpenSource Kiwix for offline Wikipedia and Wiktionary (but Wiktionary is downloaded separately try using Google) and that offline Wiktionary could be programmed with pop up window to display articles (you can also find pop up code on Google like C++).
  16. Display image from link to other website (not Wikipedia).
Wikihiero has some errors for example < hiero > r:r < / hiero > should display r above r but it is in the same row
rr, or Ax&x & should display next character near sign but not above it like : isn't working < hiero > G25&x < /hiero >
Ax power of soul. Some errors were already reported on Wikihiero talk page but still no response. Also there are only basic Ancient Egyptian hieroglyph for example than A100 and free OpenSource JSesh has more than A500 and about 3000 hieroglyphs while others have almost 7000. An article about George Aldor has been written in German by Barbara Orth. However, this article has not yet been published for reasons that are unclear. There are some corrections that could be made by me. Please let me know how to see that the article is published in the German Wikipedia, so that I can prepare a translation for the English Wikipedia.

I hope this place acts a bit as a suggestion box, for I don't know where else to put it. And I don't even know whether it's new, original. On thousands of web sites a Google Maps feature is inserted, answering the question "WHERE is it?" I think Wikipedia should/could be on those and other sites, answering the "WHAT is it?" Because I think that's our prerogative.

Unfortunately, an answer to "What is it?" is language dependant, which a map feature is not. At some time I thought of the suggestion to make miniature versions of all articles, but that is a hell of a lot of work. A colleague said that Wikidata is to perform this function, but I don't see how.

With some search queries Google gives the first 30 words of a Wikipedia article on the right hand of my screen. Perhaps we can think along those lines, persuade Google to up that to, say, 50 words. And make editors aware that those first 50 are important and why. I have no idea how to technically insert those fifty words, plus an image of course, in any web site. But I do think we should make it easy for web masters and make it our own, not Google's. Thanks for reading this. Sander1453 (talk) 09:16, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This page is mostly dead and your suggestion will probably not be seen by many users. I suggest to post this at Wikimedia Forum instead. --Glaisher (talk) 13:00, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

An invitation to Edit filter managers of wikimedia wiki projects

This is an invitation to Edit filter managers and patrollers who refer to edit filters from your wiki project to share and know about effective public filters from various wikimedia wiki projects.

It is almost six years since March 2009, that Edit filters are in use on various Wikimedia wiki projects. At meta we have started a platform page m:Edit filters benefiting to various local Wikiprojects to know good and effective (public) edit filters by sharing of relevant information with rest of wikimedia community. This will help editfilter managers, and there by concerned projects, to benefit from maximising potential of best possible (public) edit filters.

We are keen to have your participation in this collaborative and constructive endeavour and the discussions.

When is a translation finished and safely stored?

I have often wondered if my translations still exist or not. Sometimes I can see they are here – but every now and then they have mysteriously disappeared. It last happened to the short message from Johann: Johan (WMF)/HTTPS.

That leaves me with a wish: Can someone make a button at the bottom of the translation-pages to press when translation is done. Just leaving seems to me a very unsafe procedure. --Bjørn som tegner (talk) 13:04, 20 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ladino Wikipedia: Directionality Support

Judeo-Spanish (Ladino) was traditionally spelled with the Hebrew alphabet (like Yiddish). More recently, several different orthographic conventions to write the language in the Latin alphabet were developed. At this point, Ladino Wikipedia's principal directionality is left-to-right, and the majority of articles are written in the Latin alphabet. However, a notable minority of articles are written in the Hebrew alphabet, whose directionality is right-to-left. (In this regard, this wiki is not unlike the Serbo-Croatian wiki, which uses two alphabets simultaneously, though they have the same directionality.) You can see five different variations of the home page starting here. Here is my question:

  • I appreciate that I could create a rtl <div> to make the Hebrew-alphabet pages come out correctly. But I'm wondering if there is a way to mark these particular pages as rtl so that they naturally render correctly.

At mw:Directionality support, it is suggested there is a way to do this by the page. But I wouldn't know how, and I'm not an administrator. So any help someone might be able to offer would be appreciated. StevenJ81 (talk) 01:34, 3 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Also as an aside, there is a Ladino Wiktionary in the Incubator as well: incubator:Wt/lad. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:50, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nice to meet you, Justin. There is also a very small Judeo-Spanish (preferred term) Wikisource at s:mul:Main Page/Ladino. StevenJ81 (talk) 02:52, 17 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@StevenJ81: Nice. I'd like to learn this language someday when my Spanish proficiency is good enough. Until then, there's pretty minimal support I can give. I did try to promote lad.wikt at es.wikt, though. —Justin (koavf)TCM 04:59, 17 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Koavf: So would I. I'm an admin (on ladwiki), even though I don't have much literacy, because I can handle the language well enough to take care of a lot of background work.
However, let me advise you of something. It's good to promote lad-projects at es-projects. And probably it's more helpful yet on wikt than on wikipedia. But real lad-speakers on the projects are concerned that people not assume that Judeo-Spanish is just the same as modern Spanish with some spelling changes and some Hebrew/Aramaic vocabulary. That's no more true than to assume that Yiddish is the same as modern German. In both cases there is a fair amount of mutual intelligibility. But that's different from saying they're the same. And the real lad-speakers on the lad projects don't want Spanish speakers to come in and just start writing Spanish. I'm sure you can appreciate that.
By the way, I got the BiDi support working. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:44, 17 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This work may still be copyrighted in other countries. I was aware of only 1996 as the cut-off year for PD, because of URAA. This template is using 2013 as the cut-off year. Is it valid? @Saurang Vara: Those would probably go in Wikipedia. If you want to write in English, you should see the notability guidelines and make sure that you have sources. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:49, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have relevant source of my article.
I would like to participate in Wikipedia Asian Month and during this program i want to submit my article.
So can you please help me how can I submit my article? — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Saurang Vara (talk)
@Saurang Vara: I would recommend writing what interests you at w:en:User:Saurang Vara/NAME and then maybe moving that to w:en:Draft:NAME and soliciting feedback. Once you have something written, you can post to my talk page at w:en:User talk:Koavf. —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:20, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You for your response.I Wil be notified you when I write any article.

I would like to ask evaluation of following case: some editors are creating many pages of priests without any notoriety throughout wikipedia, as a form of modern Crusades using wikipedia. I know that there are other similar cases, especially with regard to political activists, but this one is the one I saw. I would like to know what is the metawiki "community" position and, if against, I whould like to ask if some measure in pan-wiki terms would be possible.--Felipe da Fonseca (talk) 19:26, 10 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I withdraw the request because we are discussing it on and there is no consensus even between us.--Felipe da Fonseca (talk) 13:36, 11 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting Jawi support on Malay pages

If you read any Chinese pages on Wikimedia and other sister projects, you could switch between the varieties of Chinese scripts from a menu just beside the "Discussion" link at top of pages. I want to request the same feature for Jawi script of Malay language on all Wikimedia and sister projects website.

As for the language code, most people write the language code for Jawi scripted Malay language as either ms-Arab [3][4] or mly-Arab [5] as Jawi script is based on Arabic script with a few additional abjads. Jawi script is also listed as alternative in a few Latin script Malay words on Wiktionary, with the module Module:ms-headword handles it. --MNH48 (talk) 11:00, 4 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Generic trademarks

I've raised an issue at Talk:Wikilegal#Generic trademarks but that page doesn't seem terribly active.. is there a better place to raise this? Andrewa (talk) 15:07, 24 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Article level

I suggest to add a article level (short/complete) for long articles. As the ongoing discussion for a simple German language [6] shows this seems to be a need. Many articles are getting quite detailed, which is good, but if you want to have a quick overview the first paragraph is too short and the complete articles too long. So a middle version like the simple English would be useful also for other languages than English. --Zukunft (talk) 08:30, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

CC-BY 4.0 as default license in upload forms

I suggest that CC-BY 4.0 should be the default suggested licensing when using the upload forms (example in Commons) for own works, instead of the current CC BY-SA 4.0 license, sometimes with dual GFDL licensing (link to Wikipedia form as example). The main difference would be that derivatives are not required to have the same license. Reasons for changing to CC-BY 4.0 are:

  • It is a more permissive license.
  • It makes it much easier to combine and mix works. The combination of the two images at right, for example, would not have been possible at all if the images were licensed under let's say CC BY-SA 4.0 for the first one and CC BY-NC 2.0 for the other. However, if either was CC-BY 4.0 it would have been permitted. See WP:Adaptation for further information in this regard.
  • CC-BY is by far the most popular licensing for open access journals (see Directory of Open Access Journals - Journal license tab), and is similarly popular in databases (see CC: Data and CC licenses). CC BY-SA is therefore not compatible for inclusion in most open access journals, denying them free access to the sum of Wikimedia knowledge.
  • Most uploaders may very well be as willing to upload under CC-BY, but may not be familiar with the differences between having SA or not. The current upload form layout thus makes lots of works receiving a more restrictive licensing than necessary. Just because uploaders can upload under the most restrictive license Wikimedia has to offer doesn't mean they need to be presented with that option by default. Those who still want to put the additional SA restriction would still be able to actively choose so.
  • The currently suggested dual licensing with CC BY-SA 4.0 with GFDL such as in Wikipedia (link to form) actually incompatible in a strict sense (see Wikipedia section on this matter, and is also a lot of extra read for those who want to know what GFDL means, since it doesn't provide the short presentation as given in Creative Commons licenses (compare GFDL license page to the CC BY-SA 4.0 page. It would therefore be both easier for uploaders and more legally correct if we simply dropped GFDL from the default license suggestion.

I've started a vote on this issue in Wikimedia Commons. Please go to that page to join:

Request for moving a page on Thai Wikipedia

A page on the Thai Wikipedia, "เจ้ากรรมนายเวร (ละครโทรทัศน์)", needs to be moved to "เจ้ากรรมนายเวร". But none of the local editors, including the admins, is able to perform the action due to the error "MWException". So, any of the available Global sysops is hereby requested to move the page "เจ้ากรรมนายเวร (ละครโทรทัศน์)" to "เจ้ากรรมนายเวร". Thank you very much. 🙏 --Miwako Sato (talk) 12:49, 19 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Taskforce creation

Hello, I wanted to propose a creation of taskforce of dedicated users with a specific objective of reducing Pages without language links in various languages. We need a plaform to form to volunteer, get and provide guidance and support, plan and implement strategies for the same. I guess a usergroup or similar initiative might work. Need suggestions. Thanks in advance Capankajsmilyo (talk) 06:13, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Please delete el:MediaWiki:Copyright and el:MediaWiki:Wikimedia-copyright because they have a wrong link and we can't edit them. We don't have Interface administrators in el.wikipedia yet [7], so none in el.wikipedia can change them. If you delete them, the correct message [8] (that comes from will be showed. Thanks. CSS on szlwiki

Hi, I'd like to request copying Polish common.css to Silesian common.css. I've asked the admin of the Silesian Wikipedia to do it not knowing he doesn't have permissions for it, so he sent me here.

No changes are necessary since we port templates from the Polish Wikipedia. I've already checked if the stylesheet works by using it as a personal CSS and everything looks okay. --Uostofchuodnego (talk) 12:20, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Long-standing turmoil in few-ed-articles and low-edited Spanish Wikipedia (2005, URGENT)

Spain's user Lourdes Cardenal, in association with a man 2005-ambassador of Peru to Spain named Manuel González Olaechea y Franco since 2005 is cheated new sysop votes in Wikipedia of this language (Taichi Bernard Jmvkrecords Eduardosalg Laura Fiorucci "from Venezuela" and many others). "Cardenal" (Spanish for Cardinal Priest) uses very strange "wiki"-propaganda nicknames and be present to every Wikipedia event in her country in an intentional low-profile, but time that King of Spain by propaganda to Spain gives to Wikipedia "Princess of Asturias" Award. Spanish Wikipedia never was a greater Wikipedia, "Cardenal" gives to vandal users (example) user flags according to this vandalism modus operandi that the vandal is useful to she or not. Mrs. "Cardenal" is a Spanish ex-elementary school teacher according interviews by Spaniards in her country. Is good in propaganda to her country. Please, make do all actions to make and survey "Cardenal"'s, Mr. González and another sysop type user with the name "Montgomery" post-expulsion socks by IP. Spanish Wikipedia since 2005 is painful. Thanks!.

information vec vènetian lenguage

Good evening, meanwhile, thank you for the great service you give us! I wanted to ask for information and if an improvement was possible. I have seen that in the "interwiki-completelist" there are all the languages divided by continent. The Venetian language is on Europe, but it is spoken by 5 million people also in the south of Brazil and is recognized as an official language by several municipalities. Could it also be added in the "America" section? Thanks in advance for your reply! Good evening and good job! --Fierodelveneto (talk) 18:10, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Fierodelveneto: Feel free to file a request in Phabricator and add the "UniversalLanguageSelector" project tag. --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 10:19, 18 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@AKlapper (WMF): Thank you very much for your reply, but from what I see the Venetian language has already been included in the Americas section as well. A cordial greeting and heartfelt thanks for the kindness of the response. --Fierodelveneto (talk) 17:32, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Partnership proposal between Kindle and Wikipedia and its affiliated projects

ATTENTION: This proposal aims to improve Wikipedia as a whole, on the recommendation of members of the Portuguese-speaking Wikipedia I moved this request to this section. Therefore any terms used here are mainly intended for Wikipedia, but, due to this, the nature of the request requires it to be proposed here. NOTE: Sorry if the English is a little bad. I come by means of this proposal that we move to create a partnership between Kindle (Amazon's library) and Wikipedia Lusophone. Benefits: Access to thousands of books, which could help reference thousands of Lusophone Wikipedia articles (Nazism, Mao Tse Tung etc.) and make it easier to find sources for the articles. Like any proposal, this one also has some flaws, they are: Possible deviation from the end (ie users can use the Kindle for their own benefit, reading books but not using them as a quote). To correct this, we could give administrators, self-reviewers and bureaucrats access to books. But we created another problem with this, we would be "barring" non-users, self-reviewers, bureaucrats and administrators from having access to books. Solution: create a tab to request access to the Kindle. Administrators / bureaucrats can evaluate requests with "support" and "not support" (just as is done with self-review requests). Below is a summary of what I propose for better understanding.

Proposal: Create a partnership between Kindle (Amazon's subscription library) and Wikipedia.

Proposal 2: Grant free access to Kindle for Administrators, Self-Reviewers and Bureaucrats.

Proposal 3: Create a tab for requests for access to the Kindle for those "outside" these groups (exactly as it is done to obtain self-review status).

Purpose of the proposal: To use the books available on Kindle to reference Wikipedia articles.

I emphasize that this proposal is mainly aimed at Wikipedia, but as this request is of a more complex nature I had to do it here.

I understand that it can be very complicated to achieve this, but it is easy to try. If it works out we can expand our reliability and reliability even more, and we can reference many contents of this wonderful project, which is Wikipedia: The free encyclopedia.

Graciously, --Editor Master Plus (talk) 18:52, 24 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Strange accounts

I’ve seen a whole bunch of strange-looking new accounts being created in recent days, using repeated strings of Japanese kana — strings of half-width kana at first, then strings of full-width kana, then strings of full-width kana mixed with a couple of homophonic kanji. They come in batches (but don’t seem to do anything, at least on yuewiki) and I see batches of them created every day. If possible, can someone monitor these accounts in case they are spam accounts? Thanks. Al12si (talk) 22:03, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
