Blocked
editHey -- you permanently blocked due to spamming. I don't know what I did, but I don't think it was spamming. I wouldn't even know how to spam. If I did spam, it was a result of trying to familiarize myself with mediawiki and was not intentional. May I be unblocked, please? — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.250.214.6 (talk) 14:42, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
- Hi. Were you CollegeRepublicans on mediawiki.org? If so, the edits you made were indeed indicative of spam, as the username itself implies (and it was also all off-topic, as the site is about documenting the software wikis run on). I appreciate the fact it wasn't intentional but I suggest registering another username (ideally personal, and not representative of any group) and perhaps use the various sandboxes around the wikis to familiarize yourself with the software. Thanks for your message, I hope I haven't bored you too much then! :D Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the stay in Gdańsk despite the glitches and the heat. :)

Personal Tools covers tabs
editHi, you posted on my talk page regarding my problem that "Personal Tools" covers the first two tabs at the top right of the page. Specifically it covers "View the user page" and "Discussion about the content page" on your talk page. It covers "View the content page" and "Discussion about the content page" on other pages. I have tried various skins but they all seem to have disadvantages. Is there any way to move the "Personal Tools" so it doesn't cover the tabs? (I have figured out how to access the "Personal Tools" and "Preferences" so thanks for that!) Best wishes, Mattisse 17:07, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi
we work cloesly together with the artist Andreas Hofer who now calles himself Andy Hope 1930. He requested that his old page Andreas Hofer is substituted by a new page Andy Hope 1930. The link was deleted unfortunately although requested by the person the page is about.
Can I try another time without you deleting the linking? — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 86.188.187.42 (talk) 14:53, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
- Hi, I'm not sure what you're referring to. The history of the page has some deletions by User:R'n'B (although that is only to fix the move). If you're referring to the modification my bot made, on the other hand, it is due to the German Wikipedia still having his name as Andreas_Hofer_(Künstler). -- Mentifisto 10:56, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

Teles is not conected
editHi, Mentifisto. I think I will have to accept what was proposed by you here. I tried to usurp "Teles" on el.wiki but I got no response after a month. You said that I should state that I'm not "Teles" on el.wiki. Exactly where do you suggest I should put this statement?” Teles (Talk @ C S) 04:47, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
- On the Greek wikis perhaps, since the local communities would be interested in the clarification. Or on Meta (if all your userpages point here, like mine do), maybe. I don't think it would be a problem in the long run; Teles on elwiki hasn't edited in years and probably won't. -- Mentifisto 21:40, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
- I left a clarification on all Greek wikis. This message on el.wiki and a message like this on all the others. I think it is enough, isn't it? Thanks for your attention.” Teles (Talk @ C S) 22:52, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Globally locked user requesting unblock on en-wiki
editHi Mentifisto. Iamthemuffinman, a user whose account you globally locked in August, has finally posted a decent unblock request under his en-wiki account. I'm inclined to grant him one last chance, but I haven't been able to locate the original rationale for the lock (I'm something of a stranger to Meta, and may have missed it) and I'm concerned that unblocking him may have wider implications. Please could you give me a brief run-down of the decision to implement a global lock, and offer a recommendation as to whether it's sensible or not to free up his en-wiki account again? Much obliged, Yunshui (talk) 13:59, 16 October 2012 (UTC) best place to contact me is my en-wiki talkpage here.

Please notice that I asked three questions of each candidate at Stewards/Elections 2013/Questions
- Do you look forward to being an active catalyst for consensus-building, especially in small wiki contexts?
- Do you see your role as a passive bystander with a few tools?
- Are you able to make balanced guesses about why, when and how "it is better not to reach than to go too far"?
As you know, you are identified as a steward at simple:Wikipedia:Administrators#List of Administrators. In this context, it is timely and meaningful to pose the same questions. --Ansei (talk) 19:06, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
These questions are not a complaint. They are forward looking and open-ended. Is it not appropriate and useful to ask such questions from time to time?Is it not reasonable to ask experienced stewards the same kinds of questions which are presented to steward candidates? --Ansei (talk) 02:19, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
- With regards to going too far, I don't think I usually do, as I'm more of an observer in complex scenarios than a participant (which I guess also means I'm not actually an active catalyst, although hopefully not merely a bystander). -- Mentifisto 19:32, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you. You try to be prudent? --Ansei (talk) 00:25, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

- Your comment was fair enough, I guess. It would be nice if you could confirm that you've read my comments on that protection, assuming that's what you're talking of.[2] [3] More important than the responsibilities I may be freed of, however: now that you commented on the specific case, given that you say to avoid "appearance of a conflict of interest" and you're so sure that "sysop tools were indeed utilized as an involved participant" in a case where it was hard to find even a single administrator to do mere "traffic police" work, you may want to add your thoughts on the general matter and for instance MarcoAurelio's point. I still have to develop an opinion on the matter, for instance. Regards, Nemo 12:18, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

An important message about renaming users
editDear Mentifisto,
I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.
As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.
Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.
The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.
Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.
In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.
Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the SUL finalisation, read over the Help:Unified login page on Meta and leave a note on the talk page there, or on the talk page for global renamers. You can also contact me on my talk page on meta if you would like. I'm working as a bridge between Wikimedia Foundation Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Stewards, and you to assure that SUL finalisation goes as smoothly as possible; this is a community-driven process and I encourage you to work with the Stewards for our communities.
Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) talk 18:24, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

Superprotect letter update
editHi Mentifisto,
Along with more hundreds of others, you recently signed Letter to Wikimedia Foundation: Superprotect and Media Viewer, which I wrote.
Today, we have 562 signatures here on Meta, and another 61 on change.org, for a total of 623 signatures. Volunteers have fully translated it into 16 languages, and begun other translations. This far exceeds my most optimistic hopes about how many might sign the letter -- I would have been pleased to gain 200 siguatures -- but new signatures continue to come.
I believe this is a significant moment for Wikimedia and Wikipedia. Very rarely have I seen large numbers of people from multiple language and project communities speak with a unified voice. As I understand it, we are unified in a desire for the Wikimedia Foundation to respect -- in actions, in addition to words -- the will of the community who has built the Wikimedia projects for the benefit of all humanity. I strongly believe it is possible to innovate and improve our software tools, together with the Wikimedia Foundation. But substantial changes are necessary in order for us to work together smoothly and productively. I believe this letter identifies important actions that will strongly support those changes.
Have you been discussing these issues in your local community? If so, I think we would all appreciate an update (on the letter's talk page) about how those discussions have gone, and what people are saying. If not, please be bold and start a discussoin on your Village Pump, or in any other venue your project uses -- and then leave a summary of what kind of response you get on the letter's talk page.
Finally, what do you think is the right time, and the right way, to deliver this letter? We could set a date, or establish a threshold of signatures. I have some ideas, but am open to suggestions.
Thank you for your engagement on this issue, and please stay in touch. -Pete F (talk) 18:14, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

editHelle Mentifisto. I can see that you still have to rename my previous username Søren1997 12 wikis. It's like a problem since I can not log on before it's done. Denver Stevenson
editHi. Reagarding the Denver Stevenson account that you recently globally locked for spamming, they came to my attention because they recreated the userpage of someone I had previously "soft" blocked for simialar, though less serious issues. In looking through their contribs I see they did this to more than one deleted userpage. So, I guess what I am asking is do you think there is cause to run a checkuser on the account to see if it is linked to these others? And if so is that somehting you could do as a steward or would it need to be done by local en.wp CUs? Beeblebrox (talk) 21:23, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
- I've done so at loginwiki which found Menezes Ramados, Oval Joe, Rin Tin Tin Ticker, Stockerwell, The true foreign rope - as linked accounts which didn't yet edit. -- Mentifisto 21:28, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Updated scripts
editHi Mentifisto. I edited your global.js and monobook.js to update you to the latest versions of ajax sysop, force ltr, and StewardScript. The new versions are compatible with the latest MediaWiki changes and reside on the Wikimedia Tool Labs for easier updates. I also updated deprecated functions and removed a manual global.js import (that happens automatically now with global user pages). Let me know if anything breaks. :) —Pathoschild 03:27, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

Global CSS/JS migration
editHello Mentifisto. You have global scripts and styles in User:Mentifisto/global.js and User:Mentifisto/global.css, which you import using your local CSS/JS pages. Since August 2014, your global.js and global.css pages are loaded automatically on all wikis. Since you already import them yourself, you may experience script errors or tools being added twice. Do you want me to fix this by removing the imports from your local pages using Synchbot (without changing any other content)? —Pathoschild 20:14, 05 July 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, please. :-) -- Mentifisto 14:27, 9 July 2015 (UTC)
- Done! You can see the list of changes on your archive page. —Pathoschild 03:52, 25 July 2015 (UTC)

As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are beginning the transition to the new policy.
An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.
The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that anyone with access to nonpublic information sign the new confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain their access. You are receiving this email because you have access to nonpublic information and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy.
Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. The general confidentiality agreement is now ready, and the OTRS agreement will be ready after 22 September 2015. We have prepared a guide on Meta-Wiki to help you create your Phabricator account and sign the new agreement: Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information/How to sign
If you have any questions or experience any problems while signing the new agreement, please visit this talk page or email me (gvarnum wikimedia.org). Again, please sign this confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain your access to nonpublic information. If you do not wish to retain this access, please let me know and we will forward your request to the appropriate individuals.
Thank you,

Confirmation discussions
editDear Mentifisto,
As you probably know, the confirmation discussions for Stewards have been closed. In order to determine the outcome of these discussions, you are invited to comment on Talk:Stewards/Confirm/2016 before scheduled closure of the confirmation section "one week after the appointment of the newly elected stewards" (Sunday 6th of March, 17:22 UTC), though the closing time might be extended at the ElectCom's discretion for an extra week if it is believed "further input is required before concluding". All stewards are welcome to comment, including those newly elected.
For those who ran for confirmation, consider revising comments regarding you, and replying to those where appropriate. Savhñ 08:01, 4 March 2016 (UTC)

No renaming between November 20 and November 27
editHi,
You’re getting this because you’re a steward or global renamer. The Community Tech team are working on cross-wiki watchlists. We need to add a couple of fields to the localuser table in centralauth database. In order to be able to do this, we’d need to run a script that will get in the way of renaming users. Our apologies – we realize this is getting in the way of your work.
We ask that you do not rename anyone between 00:00 November 20 (UTC) and 00:00 November 27 (UTC).
(UTC means that if you live in the Americas, it will be on the evening or afternoon of November 19 when the script starts running, and if you live in Oceania or eastern Asia, it can be closer midday on November 27 before we can be sure the script is no longer running.)
If there are any problems related to this, or you have any questions, please write me on my talk page. /Johan (WMF) (talk) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 19:39, 17 November 2016 (UTC)
Help design a new feature to stop harassing emails
editHi there,
The Anti-Harassment Tools team plans to start develop of a new feature to allow users to restrict emails from new accounts. This feature will allow an individual user to stop harassing emails from coming through the Special:EmailUser system from abusive sockpuppeting accounts.
We’re inviting you to join the discussion because you have experience dealing with abusive sockpuppeting accounts and you work across many wikis. We think that your insights will help us build a better feature.
You can leave comments on this discussion page or send an email to the Anti-Harassment Tools team.
It is important to hear from a broad range of people who are interested in the design of the tool, so we hope you join the discussion and let us know how it would work best for you.

Bot activity on the Dutch Wikipedia
editDear,
Your bot account hasn't made any edits on the Dutch Wikipedia for at least three years. In accordance with the local bot policy the bot flag will be removed in three months. To avoid losing the bot flag, you can confirm you want to retain the bot flag by going to this page.

Emergency in KaWiki
editDear steward,
Please read my explanation thoroughly. It is about an inexorable situation in the Georgian Wikipedia, the long-established. Every attempt to solve the problem locally fails again and again. So, please, do not be indifferent.
The requests are extraordinary, so I do not write on a general page, but personally.

Spambot?
editThis account has been created on 5 projects, with quite human behaviour (created on de.wiki, autocreated on en.wiki) for a spambot. Besides the fact that the username is in CamelCase (which isn't something one can add much value to), is there any other indication that this is a spambot? As I stated previously when discussing the lock of RodrigoactBernardino on IRC, I have rarely come across spambots with more than 4 accounts (meta, mediawiki, loginwiki and the target wiki), and I don't believe that a CamelCase username is, on itself, sufficient to determine it to be a spambot. Savhñ 13:59, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
- So, you never found a bot with more than 4 accounts? If that is a certainty then I'll follow such a threshold (well, for a day). What is exactly 'human' about accounts originating anywhere and being autocreated anywhere else, though? Is it certain that spambots always register on a single wiki? I haven't noticed that, but it'd be much easier to target just them then if that was so. Also, if you have concerns about accounts with no edits being suspected of being spambots, as I suggested in my second statement recently, I recommend a wider discussion to see if generally none of them should be locked, and perhaps only those with edits or AF (ideally CU results also show all such like they show edits) (or SBL) triggers are locked, which I wouldn't be averse to. -- Lofty abyss 18:46, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
- Amongst other things, human accounts are more likely to navigate various of the better known Wikimedia wiki's (such as this user on de.wiki and en.wiki), whilst it wouldn't seem very logical to see an account first being created on the Xhosa wikikpedia and then on the Icelandic Wikiquote. Together with other indications, that could support the theory that it is a spambot. I have no concerns with accounts with no edits or filter triggers being locked when it can be with sufficient certainty determined that they are a spambot, but I had doubts about how justified your suspicions were. Since however you're no longer a steward, I think there's no point in continuing this discussion. Please however do remain active (and not just minimally) on the wiki's where you have been entrusted with advanced permissions, or - if you're no longer interested or unable to use them - be fair to the community that trusted you to use them and eventually resign those permissions. Savhñ 21:05, 9 March 2019 (UTC)
