Question about mobile version main page

what do we need to do to move the "Suomi 100 vuotta" box to top of page in the mobile version: https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Etusivu?useformat=mobile? In desktop version it's the first box: https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Etusivu --Stryn (talk) 14:02, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

"This page is using the deprecated ResourceLoader module"

Hello. Checking the console from my browser, I get this three warnings:

  • This page is using the deprecated ResourceLoader module "jquery.ui.widget".
  • This page is using the deprecated ResourceLoader module "jquery.ui.position".
  • This page is using the deprecated ResourceLoader module "jquery.ui.core".

Please use "mediawiki.ui.button" or "oojs-ui" instead.

Please let me know if this is a deprecation in the skins code, etc, so we can have them fixed. Thanks, —MarcoAurelio 12:49, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

How to trace while developing a MediaWiki extension?

How to add tracing (for bug hunting) code to my MediaWiki extension?

When I add echo "XXX"; or var_dump(...);, I don't see it in output (despite the code line where I put this tracing works for sure, as I checked by adding exit(0); instead of this tracing and watching it crashing by exit as expected). —The preceding unsigned comment was added by VictorPorton (talk) 16:21, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

Written Sign Language Wiki: Standards and forward movement

The American Sign Language Wikipedia is available on Incubator. We are still working on the technical infrastructure, but we have 58 articles and growing.

Sutton SignWriting is a way to write any sign language on paper or computer. 672 Unicode characters have been accepted for the script, but these characters are insufficient to write the script and do not sort properly. The accepted characters deal with the individual symbols, but do not handle the 2-dimensional layout of a sign.

For the ASL Wikipedia, the text is stored as a lite ASCII markup (known as Formal SignWriting), rather than Unicode, and converted into an SVG image on the client side with a Gadget. In an ideal world, the text would be stored as Unicode, but this isn't currently available.

The Center for Sutton Movement Writing is proposing an additional 17 Unicode control characters to fix sorting, handle the 2-dimensional arrangement, and complete the script encoding. As part of the new character proposal, we are preparing a 2-D font that will properly display the script without the need for a gadget.

Unicode is obviously the answer, but what happens when it's not available? I'm hoping for support of the Center for Sutton Movement Writing's proposal for the new characters. I've put together a Wikimedia grant proposal to help create the 2-D font. Any comments or endorsements would be appreciated.

This issue will come to a head when it is time to move a sign language Wikipedia from Incubator into production. We are probably a few years away from that point, but there are multiple sign languages that will be involved. Currently, SignWriting is more popular in Brazil (required in several universities for a sign language degree) than in the United States, so it's possible the Brazilian Sign Language will be the first to move to production even though they haven't officially started yet.

In an ideal world, we will complete the 2-D font, get the new characters added to the Unicode standard, and convert the text from ASCII to Unicode during the move to production. I'm hoping that the Wikimedia Community will support our efforts along the way. -Slevinski (talk) 16:56, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

Sorting in categories on cswiki

Hello, can I ask for help? On cswiki, articles in categories are sorted by uca-cs Unicode collation. Is there any option, how to get list of the actual order of symbols/letters for our language wikipedia mutation? Because we have some categorization rules on our wiki, but they are broken because of the conversion from ASCII to Unicode in collations (I know it is a while ago, but nobody's cared until now). We want to update/improve the rules, but we don't know the order. --Dvorapa (talk) 15:20, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

Status of UserMerge ?

Hi. could anybody give an update on the UserMerge extension & tool? Under construction? Restricted to data base sysops? Abandoned? Last heard something about it two years ago. People keep requesting it, for example de:User:Doc_Taxon who owns de:User:DocTaxon and would like to merge both accounts. Thank you, --MBq (talk) 20:01, 26 January 2017 (UTC)

It was abandoned as too complex to implement properly. Ruslik (talk) 20:06, 26 January 2017 (UTC)

Developer Wishlist Survey: Vote for Proposals

Almost two weeks ago, the Technical Collaboration team invited proposals for the first edition of the Developer Wishlist survey!

We collected around 77 proposals that were marked as suitable for the developer wishlist and met the defined scope and criteria. These proposals fall into the following nine categories: Frontend, Backend, Code Contribution (Process, Guidelines), Extensions, Technical Debt, Developer Environment, Documentation, Tools (Phabricator, Gerrit) and Community Engagement.

Voting phase starts now and will run until February 14th, 23:59 UTC. Click here on a category and show support for the proposals you care for most. Use the 'Vote' and 'Endorse' buttons next to a proposal to do so.

What happens next?
Proposals that will gather most votes will be included in the final results which will be published on Wednesday, February 15th. These proposals will also be considered in the Wikimedia Foundation’s annual plan FY 2017-18 - SSethi_(WMF) (talk) 04:41, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Pages MediaWiki

How can I get access to edit and create pages MediaWiki without administrator flag, directly in specific projects? Is it possible? Thanks!--Асилзода talk 14:02, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

You can not. Ruslik (talk) 14:08, 29 January 2017 (UTC)
For what reason? Асилзода talk 14:22, 29 January 2017 (UTC)
Because only administrators (or other users with editinterface) can edit pages in MediaWiki namespace. --Stryn (talk) 15:03, 29 January 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply! Another question: how to get the rights editinterface? Thanks!--Асилзода talk 15:21, 29 January 2017 (UTC)
There are not any other local user groups with that user right at most wikis, for example see w:tg:Вижа:ListGroupRights. You would not qualify for any of the global user groups that have it.
However, if you can explain what changes you are wanting to make, we can help you find the best way to accomplish it. (Probably either an edit-protected request on the talkpage, or a direct fix to the translation if it's something that should change the message in all wikis using that language (e.g. Tajik).) Thanks. Quiddity (talk) 19:34, 29 January 2017 (UTC)
I do not need global access. At this point, it is sufficient in three projects, tg.wikipedia, tg.wikibooks, tg.wiktionary. To improve the interface, I need access to the pages MediaWiki. I have experience. Currently, the participants experience difficulty in editing. In tg.wikipedia, I translated a decent amount of gadgets, but time does not stand still, and new gadgets, more comfortable for editing. Thank you!--Асилзода talk 20:25, 29 January 2017 (UTC)
You can apply for temporal adminship on these three projects. Ruslik (talk) 20:29, 29 January 2017 (UTC)
Here, or initially in the local community? Асилзода talk 21:38, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

Fonts way too big

I am using both Chrome and firefox with Win10 64 bit on my desktop. The type is about ten times too large. You can see a sample screen shot at http://mindprod.com/dropoff/wiki.png for how https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_lie is rendered.

For me, all Wiki pages I find with Google have this problem.

A little problem

@Akapochtli: What is "the lower section" exactly? Name welcome. What is the problem with "the width of the page"? Have you considered using CSS instead of tables? To allow others to help they have to be able to see the same problem under similar conditions... Which browsers and versions have you tested, and what is your screen resolution? Thanks! :) --Malyacko (talk) 23:02, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

I supposed everyone else sees the same thing... --Akapochtli (talk) 02:03, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
@Akapochtli: No, not everyone else sees the same thing and that's why it's needed to clearly describe what the problem is. :) I can reproduce your problem in Chromium. I cannot reproduce the problem in Firefox as the two items "Tlamatiliztli neneuhcayotl" and "Ma moyolicatzin" take the full horizontal space. (For unknown reasons these two items are cells inside of a table.) That table has no "width:100%" property hence browsers can interpret how to (not) display it. --Malyacko (talk) 15:24, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

@Malyacko: I get it! Well, my browser is Google Crome, but, I checked its historical and found some editions from 2007 (september 9-12th) when was modified bottom section. So, I just made this change: and voila!

Really I don't know if it was a good edition but maybe it works, what do you think? Meanwhile thank you very much! --Akapochtli (talk) 10:21, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

Automated Temperature Conversion (template?)

Does anything like this exist? If it doesn't, where can I make a suggestion for it? Or talk about it?

I often see temperatures noted in "non-native" temperature scales in articles. For me, that would be Celsius and Kelvin. (among possible others)

It depends on the article and usage, but if it's not noted in Fahrenheit, and I want to know what the comparative value is, I have to find a converter and convert it manually. Which is a pain.

It would be nice if temperatures, whatever their chosen scale is in an article, would be shown in at least these three common values, possibly with a mouse pop-up hover-rollover.

This would be a nice addition to Wikipedia.

Of course, then you have the issue of applying this (new) system to all of the temperatures in all of the articles, which I assume will have to be done manually, but which will eventually be done over some amount of time as editors apply it.

(it seems weird to use the Wikipedia system as a "forum", so I hope I am even doing this correctly)

--WillBo (talk) 05:31, 16 March 2017 (UTC)

Many Wikipedia projects have conversion templates already. See en:Template:Convert, for example. Those aren't necessarily available on Meta or other projects where they seem less necessary. But you can always create one if the wiki you are working on doesn't have it. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:22, 16 March 2017 (UTC)

POV-Ray scene description file format

POV-Ray scene description files are currently deprecated for uploading to Wikimedia sites (see, for example, the deletion of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Poly.pov ). This is a great pity, because these are very useful as sources for 3D images, such as this image and this animation. Would it be possible to create appropriately sandboxed support for POV-Ray scene files in a way that is similar to the support for, say, SVG?

The first thing to write, of course, would be a validator, to prevent the upload of arbitrary file content. It looks like the POV-Ray SDL has a well-defined formal grammar, so writing a validator wouldn't be too hard. If anyone is interested in actually doing this, please let me know, and I might have a crack at coding a validator based on the spec given here. -- The Anome (talk) 14:20, 17 March 2017 (UTC)

Source Code for Templates

Hello. I wrote a question on Template:Infobox winter's talk page, which can be seen here. However, it's been several days and I have received no response. I was wondering if this forum could answer my questions. When I check the page's history, I see that people have edited the source code of the respective template(s), but I don't know how to find this source code. All I get if I press "edit source" is the page structure. Where can I obtain the source code? MoneyHurricane 01:13, 18 March 2017 (UTC)

I am not sure why you think that you can find the answer in an forum on a completely unrelated project? You should ask on enwiki, for instance, on en:Wikipedia:Village pump (technical). Ruslik (talk) 17:29, 18 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi StevenJ81. You're likely hitting a race condition, so depending on how large the page is, some code may be firing/initializing before the page is actually ready, causing problems. I'm experiencing the same issue intermittently. Adjusting the user scripts you're using to wait for the page to be fully ready before the user scripts start would likely fix the issue you and I are having. --MZMcBride (talk) 00:12, 12 April 2017 (UTC)

Expansion of $fax macro in translations to RTL languages

When I translate a page that contains $fax macro into a right-to-left language (See this example), the translated page arranges the expanded $fax macro (or template or whatever its called) with its digits incorrectly placed (See the second bullet list item on this translated page section as example). I think the solution might be to embed a pair of paragraph direction markers inside the body of $fax so that the LTR languages would not be affected while all RTL languages would be corrected. Or as a workaround please help me to know how to wrap the $fax itself in the translated statement so that it is displayed correctly. Alfa80 (talk) 15:48, 20 April 2017 (UTC)

Consider wrapping the fax number in <div style="direction:ltr;">(number)</div>. And for good measure replace any spaces with non-breaking spaces. StevenJ81 (talk) 16:50, 20 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks a lot, the direction is fixed now using that markup, but the number appears in its own new line. I used non-breaking spaces before and after div section.Alfa80 (talk) 10:46, 21 April 2017 (UTC)

2FA for all?

Last year in November we experienced an incident of hacked WMF/sysop accounts, which led to the rapid deployment of two-factor authentication (2FA) for sysops and some other important accounts; it was said that 2FA will become available for all users (non-sysops) as well, even “as soon as possible” (see link above). However, I am not sure whether this project is stalled, or someone has been (privately?) working in this field recently.

As a non-sysop user I am strongly interested in using 2FA with my Wikimedia account for reasons which have nothing to do with the November incident. 2FA is a standard feature in all sensitive web services today and it should be available in Wikimedia’s projects as well. Do you think it is possible to make this happen rather soon? Thanks, —MisterSynergy (talk) 06:00, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

You can ask for it at SRG. Ruslik (talk) 12:34, 12 May 2017 (UTC)
Hi MisterSynergy. How is your unprivileged wiki account sensitive? Having two-factor authentication attached to a bank account or an e-mail account is a lot different than a free wiki account, in my opinion. --MZMcBride (talk) 13:27, 12 May 2017 (UTC)
A regular wiki account that doesn't have admin or other privileged access isn't very useful to an attacker, but we can't discount any motives for why someone might try to hijack a wiki account. Spammers might try to take over a trusted account if they're blacklisted from account creation. Some trolls might hack someone's account to get them banned and cause drama. We should remember that not everyone responds to anger rationally online and some basement-dwelling hackers would hijack the account of someone who angered them to make offensive comments to get them banned and sabotage them. @r3df0x (talk) 19:51, 25 May 2017 (UTC)
We're clearly not ready for this yet, for instance Help:Two-factor authentication advertises unfree software and fails to provide usable directions to use FLOSS for the stated purpose. mw:Help:Two-factor authentication and wikitech:Help:Two-factor authentication are slightly better but don't contain complete instructions (e.g. that you need the --totp option). Nowhere we can find information on how to keep the secret key in a way that makes it safer than any password stored in a typical password manager. Accounts with 2FA get "lost" regularly, but we don't have an established process to recover them. Nemo 13:36, 12 May 2017 (UTC)
It should be noted however, that stuff like this usually doesn't get done until there is the need to do so. By pushing for this, there will be a need to solve these problems. By waiting, we will likely wait very long. We got more issues fixed in the 2 weeks after rolling out 2FA to sensitive accounts, then in the full year before and the half year since that period. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 15:29, 12 May 2017 (UTC)
Regarding Help:Two-factor authentication and wikitech:Help:Two-factor authentication, {{sofixit}}.
Regarding password managers, I think you're missing the point. A password is a knowledge factor while a TOTP token is (intended to be) a possession factor. If someone sniffs the entered TOTP token, that won't do them much good after it expires in a few minutes. Anomie (talk) 13:34, 15 May 2017 (UTC)
I never said token. Nemo 13:45, 15 May 2017 (UTC)
I protect all my “important” accounts with 2FA, since being secretly keylogged is a significant threat when I don’t use my own machine. If 2FA is not available, I meanwhile refrain from logging on in those not-so-rare situations. 2FA can’t protect my account completely from being compromised, but I prefer to have it as secure as possible and 2FA does indeed help to some extent in my situation. I recently successfully requested oathauth-tester right at Steward requests/Global and activated 2FA for my account, and still hope that it will become available for all users soon. However, I also heard of the related issues and understand that WMF needs to elaborate some more solutions before this can actually happen. —MisterSynergy (talk) 14:47, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

"Purge" button in Wikipedia's sister projects

At Wikipedia, when I clicked "Purge" button from the "More" scroll menu, the page is automatically updated and then leads to the same page. However, at sister projects, including Meta-wiki, when I clicked the "Purge" button, the page leads to the "Purge this page" page with the blue "OK" button. I had to enable the UTC clock/purge gadget, so I don't have to go to the "Purge this page" page. Any explanations about this? --George Ho (talk) 02:32, 24 May 2017 (UTC)

There are two gadgets that add purge link. The first one is a stand alone and the second one is the UTC clock gadget. Ruslik (talk) 02:42, 24 May 2017 (UTC)
Oh, yes: the stand-alone "Purge" gadget, which currently directs to that "Purge this page" screen. --George Ho (talk) 03:26, 24 May 2017 (UTC)
-- Currently, one of the projects that, if "Purge" is clicked, redirects people to the "Purge this page" screen is Wikinews. Wikisource and Wiktionary have the "Purge", "Hard Purge", and "Null edit" options from the "More" scroll menu, while others have just the "Purge" option. Other projects, especially Wikipedia, can automatically refresh/reload pages by clicking "Purge". All of the projects have the "Move"/"Rename" option, but that's irrelevant to this discussion. Some user scripts and gadgets will break on Meta during July

The MediaWiki devs have been slowly improving the accessibility of the user interface. The next step in this transition will change the appearance of some buttons and may break some outdated (non-updated or unmaintained) user scripts and gadgets.

Most editors will only notice that some buttons are slightly larger and have different colors.

You can see and use the old and new versions now. These links will take you to Meta's sandbox page, but the same approach works at all WMF wikis.

However, this change also affects some user scripts and gadgets. Unfortunately, some of them may not work well in the new system. If you maintain any user scripts or gadgets that are used for editing, please see mw:Contributors/Projects/Accessible editing buttons for information on how to test and fix your scripts. Outdated scripts can be tested and fixed now.

This change has already been deployed to the Persian and Polish Wikipedias. This change will probably reach Meta on Wednesday, 5 July 2017, along with several other larger Wikipedias. Later in July, it will reach other Wikipedias (including the English and German Wikipedias), and then other sites (e.g., the Wikisources and Commons) after that.

Please leave a message at mw:Talk:Contributors/Projects/Accessible editing buttons if you have any questions. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:26, 20 June 2017 (UTC)

created my wikipedia/media-account 2 days ago.

Used to work as data&database-analytic in hightech/highend for some years.

Meanwhile working on my private database, I´m coming near to downloading

some thousand wiki-features. For several reasons I want to obtain an offline-version of my database.

My database contains the chapter e-book/epub as well ( and full linux/base fumctionality will

be required later). NOW I´m looking for some folks, involved in the pdf-export/generation-story,

because the pdf-rendering-(bug)/problems take my time.

If you know some wikipedians in charge of the compilation issue, please tell me.

Meanwhile I´ll be comparing (wiki) source-codes on my hunt for the export-bugs.

Improved search in deleted pages archive

During Wikimedia Hackathon 2016, the Discovery team worked on one of the items on the 2015 community wishlist, namely enabling searching the archive of deleted pages. This feature is now ready for production deployment, and will be enabled on all wikis, except Wikidata.

Right now, the feature is behind a feature flag - to use it on your wiki, please go to the Special:Undelete page, and add &fuzzy=1 to the URL, like this: https://test.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3AUndelete&fuzzy=1. Then search for the pages you're interested in. There should be more results than before, due to using ElasticSearch indexing (via the CirrusSearch extension).

We plan to enable this improved search by default on all wikis soon (around August 1, 2017). If you have any objections to this - please raise them with the Discovery team via email or on this announcement's discussion page. Like most Mediawiki configuration parameters, the functionality can be configured per wiki. Once the improved search becomes the default, you can still access the old mode using &fuzzy=0 in the URL, like this: https://test.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3AUndelete&fuzzy=0

Please note that since Special:Undelete is an admin-only feature, this search capability is also only accessible to wiki admins.

Thank you! CKoerner (WMF) (talk) 18:36, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

Increased control size and text of the Wikisource editing page

I laud your implementation of larger buttons and captions, and perhaps it is also possible to increase the size of the radio buttons which are used to set the page status. Just a thought.Ineuw (talk) 22:43, 1 August 2017 (UTC)

@Ineuw: Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you like the more accessible buttons. The radio buttons on Wikisource are the ProofreadPage "quality" buttons, and I agree that we need to modernise them too. The task for this work is T164753 on Phabricator, to which you can subscribe if you're interested. I'll encourage colleagues and volunteers to work on that soon. Developer Wishlist Survey: propose your ideas

At the Wikimedia Developer Summit, we decided to organize a Developer Wishlist Survey, and here we go:

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Developer_Wishlist

The Wikimedia technical community seeks input from developers for developers, to create a high-profile list of desired improvements. The scope of the survey includes the MediaWiki platform (core software, APIs, developer environment, enablers for extensions, gadgets, templates, bots, dumps), the Wikimedia server infrastructure, the contribution process, and documentation.

The best part: we want to have the results published by Wednesday, February 15. Yes, in a month, to have a higher chance to influence the Wikimedia Foundation annual plan FY 2017-18.

There's no time to lose. Propose your ideas before the end of January, either by pushing existing tasks in Phabricator or by creating new ones. You can find instructions on the wiki page. Questions and feedback are welcome especially on the related Talk page.

The voting phase is expected to start on February 6 (tentative). Watch this space (or even better, the wiki page) - SSethi_(WMF) January 21st, 2017 3:07 AM (UTC)

Mediawiki 1.24 Skins/extension

Hey guys,

I am creating my own wiki for the first time. At the moment I have already installed Mediawiki, also got some Articles in

My Problem: I wanted to add the skin "apex". As I saw my Version of Mediawiki isnt supported anymore. And Apex needs V 1.25+. Does anyone know where i could get a working skin for Mediawiki 1.24?

I already searched the Web, but did not find anything helpfull.

Thanks for you help,

best regards Jens

"Search for contributions" date range

Most of the "Search for contributions" user interface still works. However, I clicked the current month, i.e. "August" and tried to select one of the other months, but then the date is not selected or something. I tried clicking a different year, but the date is not selected. The Phabricator tasks are still ongoing (T170502 and T91148), but I want to discuss the issue here first. Not only it is happening at en.wp, but I also tried es.wp and Commons. Same issue. Anything wrong with the date range calendars or something? --George Ho (talk) 23:21, 1 August 2017 (UTC)

@George Ho: There was a specific bug with that, phab:T172041. It's patched and was merged yesterday, so it should be live after the deployment train reaches each wiki (so Thursday for most of the Wikipedias, or mediawiki and testwikis today). Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 02:10, 2 August 2017 (UTC)

The bug is fixed, Quiddity. Nevertheless, Wikimedia projects didn't exist prior to 2000 or 2001. However, the calendar includes the years before 2000. What to do about it? --George Ho (talk) 06:50, 5 August 2017 (UTC)

@George Ho: I would suggest that it isn't worth worrying about. (A) it was possible to add years prior to 2000 in the old system. (B) Whilst it's technically feasible to prevent going earlier, that would require adding so much more complexity to the code (getting it to check the relevant database's start time, for any context the widget it used in) that it would probably cause actual problems in the long-run. -- The more complex the code is, the more trouble it can create, and more effort is needed to maintain it. (See related notes at mw:Just make it a user preference, an overview/essay I threw together that gives cons/pros of preference complexity (I love preference complexity, but must acknowledge the drawbacks)). However, if I've overlooked an aspect and you want to discus it, then the place to bring it up is either a new phabricator task, or the talkpage of mw:Manual:DateInputWidget. HTH. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 21:53, 5 August 2017 (UTC)

Subject heading function not allowing my browser's Autocorrect functions?

Seems that the updated subject heading function doesn't allow my browser's (IE11) Autocorrect function to work in the heading function. I tested the subject heading out in Google Chrome and realized that the Autocorrect function works there especially by seeing red scribbles under misspelled or nonexistent words. At IE11, however, I don't see red scribbles anywhere in the subject heading, but I can still see them in the body message function. I can type this as a test: aodginaoibjr. I can see the red scribbles in the body message function but not in the "Subject" on IE11. On Google Chrome, I can see red scribbles when I click on the "Subject". I don't know whether to describe the issue in the Phabricator, so I'm describing the problem here first instead. --George Ho (talk) 19:58, 7 August 2017 (UTC)

Timeline date range of Editor Interaction Analyzer

Editing window layout in classic toobar version vs. enhanced toolbar version

I have switched from the enhanced/WikiEditor toolbar to classic toolbar, i.e. enhanced toolbar currently disabled. Then I realized that the editing window in the "classic" version is also different from the "enhanced" one. The text and spaces are smaller especially to read in the "classic" version than the "enhanced" one. What can be done about the difference in the editing window? --George Ho (talk) 22:42, 18 August 2017 (UTC)

@George Ho: Here's a screenshot of what I see, which is only a difference in the leading (aka line-spacing). I can make them look the same by adding this to my Special:MyPage/global.css: #wpTextbox1 {line-height: 1.1em;}
If you see further differences, it would help if you could provide either screenshots or precise typographical terminology (I think you're referring to the w:en:leading and font-size). Thanks. Quiddity (talk) 17:32, 20 August 2017 (UTC)
Oh... I didn't realize the description refers to "(line) leading". (Well, a jargon (no offense); thanks for letting me know, Quiddity.) Yeah, that's exactly what I was referring to by looking at the screenshots. No need to explain any other differences, though I noticed that, by switching to "classic" mode, there are more buttons in enWP than at Meta-wiki. Personally, I don't need a personal script for special treatment, but thanks. If filing a Phabricator task is too soon, maybe I'll wait for the upcoming Community Wishlist Survey. Fair? --George Ho (talk) 20:01, 20 August 2017 (UTC); see below, --05:26, 2 September 2017 (UTC)
I changed my mind. I created my own "global.css", Quiddity. I tested both 1.1em and 1.5em. I find the "1.5em" setup more readable than the "1.1em" setup. I created more screenshots to confirm my studies. --George Ho (talk) 05:26, 2 September 2017 (UTC)
This old editing environment is being removed from MediaWiki (maybe later this month). It will shortly stop being supported by the WMF and no longer be in your preferences. If you are using it, then no toolbar will appear (but everything else will be the same). I believe that some editors at the French Wikipedia plan to convert the old toolbar to a user script/gadget. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 00:31, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
@Whatamidoing: If the old toolbar will be gone and... vamoosed, what about the line-spacing that I raised earlier and showed in screenshots? Can it be upgraded all over wikis? BTW, I guess I'll miss that old toolbar.   --George Ho (talk) 23:42, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
Users will default to the oldest wikitext mw:editor. The line spacing in it can be changed with sitewide CSS, and the change that you made will probably work in the oldest editor, too. Local admins can do this for everyone (if they know how to write CSS, obviously).
There is an effort to replace the 2006 wikitext editor with a user script (probably one that already exists at the French Wikipedia). Assuming that works out, you should be able to switch to the user script and have almost the same thing anyway. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 17:14, 12 September 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the whole reply, Whatamidoing. If I want the site-wide line-spacing change, must I ask at a Community Wishlist for consensus or file a Phabricator task? Or can the line-spacing be changed right away? --George Ho (talk) 15:56, 13 September 2017 (UTC)
Each wiki can adjust this. For example, at the English Wikipedia, you would ask for this to be changed at w:en:WP:VPT. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 17:20, 13 September 2017 (UTC)

Improvements coming soon to Recent Changes

Hello

Sorry to use English. Please help translate to your language! Thank you.

In short: starting on 26 September, New Filters for Edit Review (now in Beta) will become standard on Recent Changes. They provide an array of new tools and an improved interface. If you prefer the current page you will be able to opt out. Learn more about the New Filters.

What is this feature again?

This feature improves Special:RecentChanges and Special:RecentChangesLinked (and soon, Special:Watchlist – see below).

Based on a new design, it adds new features that ease vandalism tracking and support of newcomers:

  • Filtering - filter recent changes with easy-to-use and powerful filters combinations, including filtering by namespace or tagged edits.
  • Highlighting - add a colored background to the different changes you are monitoring. It helps quick identification of changes that matter to you.
  • Bookmarking to keep your favorite configurations of filters ready to be used.
  • Quality and Intent Filters - those filters use ORES predictions. They identify real vandalism or good faith intent contributions that need help. They are not available on all wikis.

You can know more about this project by visiting the quick tour help page.

Concerning RecentChanges

Starting on 26 September, New Filters for Edit Review will become standard on Recent Changes. We have decided to do this release because of a long and successful Beta test phase, positive feedback from various users and positive user testing.

Some features will remain as Beta features and will be added later. Learn more about those different features.

If your community has specific concerns about this deployment or internal discussion, it can request to have the deployment to their wikis delayed to October 1, if they have sensible, consistent with the project, actionable, realistic feedback to oppose (at the development team's appreciation).

You will also be able to opt-out this change in your preferences.

Concerning Watchlists

Starting on September 19, the Beta feature will have a new option. Watchlists will have all filters available now on the Beta Recent Changes improvements.

If you have already activated the Beta feature "⧼eri-rcfilters-beta-label⧽", you have no action to take. If you haven't activated the Beta feature "⧼eri-rcfilters-beta-label⧽" and you want to try the filters on Watchlists, please go to your Beta preferences on September 19.

How to be ready

Please share this announcement!

Do you use Gadgets that change things on your RecentChanges or Watchlist pages, or have you customized them with scripts or CSS? You may have to make some changes to your configuration. Despite the fact that we have tried to take most cases into consideration, some configurations may break. The Beta phase is a great opportunity to have a look at local scripts and gadgets: some of them may be replaced by native features from the Beta feature.

Please ping me if you have questions.

On behalf of the Global Collaboration team, Trizek (WMF) 15:26, 14 September 2017 (UTC)

I think it should support the translate extension before making it default. Stryn (talk) 16:34, 14 September 2017 (UTC)

The following discussion has been closed. Please do not modify it.

Meta:Administrators/Removal is coming up again on 1 October and if you leave it to yours truly like last time, it will be skipped because checking the fulfillment of the criteria manually is super-tedious. Can someone write a script/tool to check the criteria listed on the page (or point to one that exists already)? --MF-W 23:24, 23 September 2017 (UTC)

@MF-W Maybe this tool? Regards, Lsanabria (talk) 21:43, 24 September 2017 (UTC)
I guess it would be “ok“ if it had the criteria implemented but it would still require entering each of the sysops manually. --MF-W 17:29, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
I will do this. -- Freddy2001 talk 19:13, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
https://xtools.wmflabs.org/adminstats could help with this, it's a really nice statics page for admins, which can be filtered by time (e.g. "beginning 1st april, ending 1st october"). But it doesn't count edits to protected pages and also shows users who don't have their admin rights any more, so this isn't replacement for a tool, but only a way to make manual filtering less painuful. EddieGP (talk) 19:20, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
But it doesn't show edit counts at all from a chosen period. It only shows admin actions. Stryn (talk) 19:31, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
@EddieGP: Your link points to an 404-Error. I reported it on Phabricator.
Currently there are 5 admins who have done their 10th recent edit before April (Removal criteria one):
  • User:Barras: 2017-02-20T17:29:35Z
  • User:Dschwen: 2017-03-06T18:37:22Z
  • User:Glaisher: 2017-01-01T05:00:02Z

-- Freddy2001 talk 21:29, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
My link shouldn't have a trailing slash (removed now). It's right that the tool one doesn't show edit counts, but there are plenty of tools to do that. I just wanted to point out a way to make manually searching for it less painful (using some other tool for edit counts, the one linked to count actions that require sysop rights). As I said, this won't solve the problem, so it's nice that Freddy2001 will develop a tool for it. Thanks for that. EddieGP (talk) 21:45, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
I can look into making XTools' Admin Stats show some of the information you are discussing. Edit count within the period should be easy but I'm not sure how much it will slow it down. I'll have to do some testing. Counting edits to protected pages probably won't happen :/ This mainly because it's not cheap to determine which pages were protected at the time the edits were made. We can however show the number of edits to interface pages (MediaWiki namespace), which are always fully protected. There is a task for this already open at phab:T171996MusikAnimal talk 23:27, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
Last week I started writing an SQL query quarry:/query/21657 I plan to finish it (as in to also add editcount, number of edits in particularly, ns8 and CN campaigns log entries). --Base (talk) 21:51, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
Can someone add what else shall be counted or discounted? Protected pages edits? It is is a bit tricky to do but I may try (perhaps with a bot rather than SQL). The only thing I do not know how to fetch are Translate related logs, as for translatable page and translation page deletions for example. --Base (talk) 21:56, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
(Edit conflict.) @MF-Warburg: Thanks for bringging this. I'll try to help you in this October inactivity round, but I agree that this is super-tedious. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 21:52, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
@Base: Things like are quite tricky, indeed, since you need to check the protection status of each edited page. The good thing is that we only need to check ten actions per user, and then can skip everything. So if the admin did eg. 10 blocks, nothing else need to be done. And once you found ten protected-page edits, no more are needed. The pathological case would be a sysop that edited lots of pages, but didn't actually use his rights. Platonides (talk) 22:05, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
Maybe, given the difficulty of generating the stats and in order to make your fellow bureaucrats life easier we should consider making some amendments to the policy? —MarcoAurelio (talk) 22:10, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

Thanks everyone for participating. With Freddy2001 volunteering to create the list by 1 Oct (we have already been in touch), this problem is solved. --MF-W 01:03, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

I was hoping it could be generalized and used in other communities, too. Seems it's going to be Meta-specific. (Well, that's fine too.) — regards, Revi 01:07, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
I guess for such specific requirements, it makes more sense to write a script in each case than some kind of tool. Especially because the data are only required on 2 dates per year. --MF-W 01:26, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

How do I force a magic word-based transclusion instead of a template parameter?

{{User talk:{{PAGENAME}}}} gives a different magic word than {{{{PAGENAME}}/stuff}} -- the problem is that a template parameter (three {'s) seems to have higher parameter than a magic word (two {'s), probably because the parser just reads left to right and never comes back. Wrong entries in "What links here"

Hello, I'm a regular editor in the German Wikipedia. The page https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spezial%3ALinkliste&target=P%C4%B1narlar&namespace=0 shows many links, but I don't know why. I can't find a link to the page Pınarlar in these articles or in a template. So why are they listed on the page "What links here"? --Trustable (talk) 09:13, 7 November 2017 (UTC)

This is because after a change in the link in a navbox, the links in the articles have not updated yet. If you make null edits on all those linking articles, the links will disappear. Ruslik (talk) 19:19, 9 November 2017 (UTC)

Edits not made with the mobile software are not marked as made with the mobile software

I am just interested is it possible to get the system know if I've edited on my phone using the desktop version. Currently edits are marked with a tag "mobile edit" only if you use the mobile app or mobile version. I, for example make almost every week a few edits using my phone, but nobody knows I've actually edited on my phone. Stryn (talk) 15:32, 9 November 2017 (UTC)

I believe the tag exists to track potential issues with the mobile editor, rather than to identify all edits made using a phone even if they were done using a non-mobile editor. Anomie (talk) 15:42, 13 November 2017 (UTC)
So it's quite useless then. Stryn (talk) 16:15, 15 November 2017 (UTC)

Wiki editor issues on Firefox 57

Hi. After I updated to Firefox 57, I faced the issue with the wiki editor in all wiki projects (including this). The buttons on the editor panel, such as insert a symbol / outline text with bold / insert a signature, etc. stopped working. When I click those buttons, nothing inserts in text. They however may ocassionally work in a random way about 1 time out of 10. I'm using the latest Firefox 57 64-bit on Windows 7 x64. And I have 304 Undefined errors in my web console related to these links:

What could be the issue? Thanks. Coolak (talk) 13:09, 16 November 2017 (UTC)

UPD. The issue is resolved. It was the add-on "Text Area Cache" that caused it, sorry for the confusion. Coolak (talk) 13:27, 16 November 2017 (UTC)

Currently dewikipedia and wikidata are affected by the hardware death of a db server which unfortunately happened while a schema change was being deployed.

Geolocalization of the edits

Hello, Blackcat from it.wiki here. I don't know whether this is the right place for the following question, anyway I am asking it because this is a technical environment. A fellow Wikipedian from Italy is involved into the organization of cultural events for Wikimedia Italia. She asked me whether there's an edit counter which records also the global position of the IP addresses visiting the pages, the ratio of such request being the need to know whether the trafic on a given article might be related with an event that involved the topic of the said article (i.e. a monument, a palace, a church, etc). Thanks in advance. -- Blackcat (talk) 09:56, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

So this is actually about visits to an article, not edits? --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 15:40, 27 November 2017 (UTC)
Yes, Elitre, excuse me, I meant visitors, not editors, my mistake. -- Blackcat (talk) 17:18, 27 November 2017 (UTC)
I do not think there is such a tool. Ruslik (talk) 18:18, 27 November 2017 (UTC)
Hi, I'm on the Analytics team at WMF. We do log the data that we would need, but it's not available in a public tool. So the only way to access it right now would be to propose a research project, but that is a pretty formal process and there are already many strong proposals. Here is where you would do that: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Projects. The main question would be, how is this data widely useful to many many people? If you can make a good case for that, it might get considered and prioritized. Milimetric (WMF) (talk) 18:58, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

Module:

Good day!

I am abwiki administrator and want to change Russian version (Module:) "Модуль:" into Abkhazian "Амодуль:", like — Шаблон/Ашаблон.

In another words for example we have

but, nowdays "modules" in Russian and Abkhazian wiki starts with same word - "Модуль"

and same combination

Abkhazian language have his own grammar and all wards starts with "А" (Cyrillic). It means that wikisintacsis of the "Module:" should be like "Амодуль:" not Russian version - "Модуль:". It is same case with "Template:", in Russian we have "Шаблон:" but already have in Abkhazian "Ашаблон:".

Let's change "Модуль:" into "Амодуль:" too.

Sincerely--Surprizi (talk) 06:32, 10 December 2017 (UTC)

It looks like you are talking about namespace aliases. You'll have to create a phab ticket to have someone with access to the controls do it. Killiondude (talk) 07:03, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
  • The user wants to translate Module namespace’ name into Abkhazian (Амодуль) instead of relying on the current Russian fallback for it (Модуль), so changing this file would help them. @Surprizi: it would be also helpful to provide a talk page name for the namespace (Амодуль_ахцәажәара?), so anyone that would follow up on this would not do the work twice. / Было бы также хорошо предоставить перевод и для страницы обсуждения (Амодуль_ахцәажәара?), чтобы те, кто поможет вам с этим, не занимались этим дважды. stjn[ru] 16:49, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
Yes of course, create a talk page name for the namespace (Амодуль_ахцәажәара?) too. Thanks a lot!--Surprizi (talk) 05:57, 12 December 2017 (UTC)
@Saint Johann: In Abkhazian Wikipedia we have own sorting raw. I mean that after symbol Г is coming Гь, Гә, Ҕ, Ҕь, Ҕә, Д, Дә... So sorting rules in Abkazian language is different from Russian and beside this we have digraphs/ So is it possible to use abkhazian sorting system and this digraphs will appear in category sorting process? I mean it would be ideal if in sorting there would be different "Г" Гь, Гә, Ҕ, Ҕь...--Surprizi (talk) 06:58, 12 December 2017 (UTC)
@Surprizi: As for the Module/Module_talk issue, please create a ticket in Phabricator and I'll look at uploading the translations for that. For amending sorting rules, please create a different task after obtaining consensus on your wiki for the change. Best regards. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 07:07, 12 December 2017 (UTC)
@MarcoAurelio: Sorry but I cant find "create a ticket" button. Please help me. :(--Surprizi (talk) 07:17, 12 December 2017 (UTC)

Sorting

Good day! Hello from abwiki.

Today I want talking with different (difficult) case of problems.

First problem. I in abkazian language as you know we have words which are beginning with A (Cyrillic) letter, but not all of them. If we'll go categories, then we must see most of word under the symbol "A". I know you'll say "yes of source it is sorting like this because word beginning with A letter and this system work in all wiki"!

but

yes of course Abkazian words most of them originally begin with A letter but each word has its own root/base.

Look, if you open Abkhazian vocabulary 515 page you'll see:

М

  • .
  • .
  • .
  • А́-мҩарбаҩ - (А́-мҩарбаҩ - it is grammar form. in wikipedia we wright just Амҩарбаҩ)
  • А́-мҩасырҭа - ((Амҩасырҭа in wikipedia)this word root/base begin with М letter and otherwise should be collect under the М letter)
  • А́-мҩасра
  • А́-мҩасҩы
  • А́-мҩахгара
  • А́-мҩахҟьара
  • А́-мҩахырҟьара
  • А-мҩахы́ҵра
  • А́-мҩахыҵырҭа
  • А-мхəа́сҭа
  • А-мџь
  • А́-мџьаӷь
  • А́–мџьахьа

Н

  • На - (this word root/base begin with Н letter and otherwise should be collect under the Н letter)
  • А́-наа - ((Анаа in wikipedia)this word root/base begin with Н letter and otherwise should be collect under the Н letter)
  • А-наа́лара - ((Анаалара in wikipedia)this word root/base begin with Н letter and otherwise should be collect under the Н letter)
  • А-наа́лашьа - ((Анаалашьа in wikipedia)this word root/base begin with Н letter and otherwise should be collect under the Н letter)
  • А-наа́леҭ - ((Анаалеҭ in wikipedia)this word root/base begin with Н letter and otherwise should be collect under the Н letter)

This was one problem! :-)

Second problem in Abkhazian vocabulary arise with letters, because we beside original letters have digraphs too. quantity of digraphs are about 20 (қь, қә, ҟь, ҟә, ҕь, ҕә, ҧь, ҧә...). Problem is weeder in sorting. For example in classical wiki sorting system words: аҟаҵара, аҟьамсар, аҟәара... would be under the Cyrillic ҟ letter. And this is a mistake, because words should be collect in its own letter: аҟаҵара (а-ҟаҵара, root is ҟаҵара) - ҟ, аҟьамсар (а-ҟьамсар, root is ҟьамсар) - ҟь, аҟәара (а-ҟәара, root is ҟәара) - ҟә.

nowadays most of words in Categories sorted under the A letter.

third problem is in sorting system. look et this. Here under the letter A you can see words: Агкқәа, Алаҳаӡы, Амгәашхәҵа, Арасаӡыхь (Гагра), Аҟәара, Аҭыӡҭа, Аҳәыҳәшәара, Аҽмарда, Аҿыҧсҭа. This is not correct sorting because Аҟәара should stay front of Арасаӡыхь (Гагра). The abkhazian alphabet sequence should be following like in the vocabulary in book or like on that link.

It's all! :-)--Surprizi (talk) 06:22, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

I wonder if this is something that mw:Manual:$wgCategoryCollation would solve, although I don't see that language supported yet. User:BWolff (WMF), User:Matma Rex, am I wrong? --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 09:28, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

Elitre (WMF) is correct in both cases. We currently do not support Abkhazian (and neither does ICU, the library which we use to sort). But I think we could add support for it fairly easily, using the system that User:BWolff (WMF) previously implemented for Bashkir (see phab:T162823). I will investigate this and reply here soon. Surprizi, I'll probably need you to clarify a few things for me, as I don't speak Abkhazian :) (and I can only barely read Cyrillic script). Matma Rex (talk) 22:13, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

Can you please confirm:

  • Is this the correct sorting order of letters and digraphs? I've taken this from https://ab.wikipedia.org/wiki/Аҧсуа_алфавит, and it is also identical to the alphabet in the dictionary you linked, on page 3 (except that the dictionary used "ə U+0259 LATIN SMALL LETTER SCHWA" instead of "ә U+04D9 CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER SCHWA", which I assume is a mistake, as the characters are visually identical).
  • Should the letter "А"/"а" at the beginning of every word always be ignored when sorting? (Does this apply to every word in the page title, or only to the first word?) Should the same happen with "А́"/"а́"?
  • Should the digraphs be treated as separate letters, e.g. have their own headings on category pages, like in Hungarian: https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kategória:Az_Európai_Unió_tagállamai?
  • Should "ь" and "ә", when they are not part of a digraph, actually be sorted after all other letters? (Or is it just a convention because they can never appear at the beginning of a word or something?)

Also, note that when this is implemented, you will need to use special syntax in category sort keys ({{DEFAULTSORT:…}}) in cases where the characters belonging to a digraph have to be treated separately, or where the beginning "А"/"а" should not be ignored – for example, in foreign-language place names. On Hungarian Wikipedia they have a template for this: https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sablon:Hamis_digráf. Matma Rex (talk) 02:47, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

I confirm that your sorting order of letters and digraphs is correct. You may not to add last two letters in this order. In the book one letter is used Latin instead Russian. Should he Russian letters! Unfortunately we don't ignore letter A in all word. For example word Аҧсуа base bigining with letter A. There are lot of words in Abkhazian which roots starts with A. So I think to do automatically should be incorrect. I think better do it manually. with "А́"/"а́" no words are begin! This acute is like Russian. Yes, digraphs be treated as separate letters, e.g. have their own headings on category pages, like in Hungarian: https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kategória:Az_Európai_Unió_tagállamai

In Abkhazian letters ь and ә is not used with other letters like Russian. In Abkhazian they are part of digraphs. This letters are materials to build digraphs no more.Surprizi (talk) 04:15, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

(I don't know if I'm more moved by Matma's intervention - thanks for saving the day, as always! - or by the fact that I guessed that thing! \o/ Hope support for ab. can happen. --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 08:40, 15 December 2017 (UTC) )

@Surprizi: Sorry for late response.

  • I think you'll have to handle the beginning "А" specially in each page – on pages where it must be ignored, use https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Magic_words#Defaultsort. For example, on the page "Анаалара", add {{DEFAULTSORT:наалара}} before the list of categories. ("DEFAULTSORT" could be translated to Abkhazian, but there's no translation for it right now.)
  • In the rare case that "ь" or "ә" appear at the beginning of page title (for example in an article about the letter – there isn't one on ab.wiki yet, but like this: https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ә_(кириллица) ), they should be sorted at the end, correct?

I started working on the code, see phab:T183430. Can you confirm that the page order in the two screenshots I posted there is correct? Matma Rex (talk) 00:16, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

OK, I agree with you. Sorting system should be controlled mechanikaly with default sorting. As this two letters we have in rare case OK let's lies it on the end side. I also agree with sorting order.-Surprizi (talk) 02:40, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

Lua scripts timing out

I'm trying to clear out this category, but I'm having some trouble with Lua scripts that are timing out on certain pages. For example, they're timing out here, here and here, but they're not timing out on other pages that are, as far as I can tell, formatted in a similar way (here, here and here, just to name a few). What gives? – Srdjan m (talk) 11:24, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
