Tiel do iu ajn povas fusxi bildon antauxe alsxutitan simple alsxutante iun alian samnoman cxu samteman cxu ne ecx sen scio pri la fusxado!!!) Vikie : Arno.

It's your language skills and interest in meta issues that makes you qualified, not so much your knowledge of the Mediator job itself. But any input on those issues is also welcome, if you support the idea of the role - the incumbent META User:Mediator
Wikipedia-wide information network
editHello.
I am Anthere. I only speak french and english. I hope someone will be able to translate this, and I apologise if I did not put it in the right place :-)
I would like that information circulate better between wikipedias, so that all wikipedians can participate more, and keep its own identity at the same time.
For this reason, I recently set a page on meta, m: Goings-on.
Hopefull, at any time, this page could indicate the current discussions, polls, votes or general announcements. 3 pages were already locally created on the spanish, the french and the english wikipedia. A global one is now on meta.
Each local page is about general on-goings as well as local ones.
Meta page aims at being about global occurences.
The page is different from the announcement page. The announcement is more oriented toward external communication (such as number of pages, special adverstisement), while the on-goings aim at mentionning community events (such as a new feature poll, elections of board of trustees).
To compare both pages :
- annoucement page on meta : http://meta.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_News (this is rather for general and external announcements)
- goings-on page : http://meta.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goings-on (this is for community announcement). This page is still under construction.
It would be great that each wikipedia in time, set a similar page, so that information could flow more easily between wikipedia. If you do so, please do set the goings-on page locally, so that every wikipedians on *your* wikipedia can see it and participate to it, and please link it to the meta page.
For bigger wikipedia, it is also interesting to set a goings-on page to relieve the local village pump, often clogged with information request.
For small wikipedias, it makes sense to merge the goings-on in the village pump, perhaps by making a separate paragraph.
I am also looking for people who would agree to update the local goings-on in their language. Please, contact me at my talk page for any support, suggestion and feedback.
Thank you very much for your attention :-) Anthere

Election translation
editThank you for your joining to translator team! For language eqaulity, we Election officers encourage translation, and it is nice to have esperanto version. By the way, for equality, we assure also candidates their statement is equally available in same languages. That is, if you present your statement in esperanto, we expect eo coordinator (that is you ;p) care for other statements too. Would you like to manage other candidates' translation? (Currently Anthere solely) or would you like to ask other like Gangleri to translate those statements?

Steward elections 2006
editYou are already a steward. Why do you candidate again? -Romihaitza 14:38, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
I'm sorry to notify you on this, Arno, but your stewards rights have been taken away due to the current 2006 elections. Since you haven't gained 80% of support, you aren't enough trusted with the steward tools. Of course, you can try once more during the next elections. Datrio 21:51, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
- Well, Arne, to make a long story short - you're using your Steward rights on your own project, no where else. Being a steward, means serving the community - the Wikimedia community, not your own. And the Wikimedia community decided that your stewardship isn't needed on the projects, you should be aware of that. That's all I can say on this topic. Datrio 13:49, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

I'd like to chat with you about Wikipedia of your language. Would you kindly drop me your email or IM (Skype, MSN, AIM or ICQ)? Translation combination boxes
editThe following text was copied from Meta:Babel#Translation_combination_boxes. As an active translator, it may be of any interest to you:
Hi, Sabine worked on new boxes for translators. They aim at giving information about translation combination: say, I can translate from English to French, from Italian to Spanish, and so on. It would help us to know who can translate what, in what, to streamline the translation process. The boxes do not provide information about your level (wether you are a professional translator or not, for example); you may write something about this point in your user page (very useful as well). A few boxes are available, be bold and create those you need :) Be aware we use ISO 639-3 codes for languages (fra and not fr, eng and not en, ...).
Please see "Translator in the following language combinations" and pick up templates for your user page!
This message was pasted on several User talk pages of active translators.
Thank you :)

Election notice translation
editArno, I believe finally I understood what you meant with your template(s) ;) Thank you for your all efforts for multilingualization on this Election.
Also I appreciate you greatly for your translation of the Election notice and other candidates' statements! I think it a noble attitude, the latter in particular. I have been very impressed with your genelosity in every Election occasion.

Two different pages for asking you questions?
editWhich of these two pages, User:ArnoLagrange/Kandidatiĝo por la Fidataro and Vikipediisto:ArnoLagrange/Kandidatiĝo ĉe Wikimedia should I link to in the Swedish translation of your statement? // Habj 23:01, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
I've tried to improve the translation mainly based on the English statement. But I did not translate just word for word but tried to recognize what you had meant and then rewrite it accordingly. I once heard this was what professional translators would do themselves.
Do you want me to continue helping translate like this ?
In the English translation, it says "pretty good level of English". In the French it was "niveau moyen", which I would translate as "intermediate level" or "mediocre". I think "pretty good" suggests a higher degree than "niveau moyen". So I only chose "mittelmäßig" in the German translation. Is that okay with you? And what about "pretty good level of English"?
There's a sentence in the English version that needs to be imrpoved because the personal pronoun changes inappropriately:
"How does someone enter a debate on some important subject if, because of a language barrier, I , like a great many users, cannot understand well what it is about?".
The same was true for the German version until I changed it to:
"Wie kann jemand an einer Debatte zu irgendeinem wichtigen Thema teilnehmen, wenn er oder sie, wie auch sehr viele andere Benutzer einschließlich mir selber, wegen der Sprachbarriere nicht gut verstehen kann, was gerade besprochen wird?"
Do you want me to change it in the English version as I changed it in the German version, too? Bergkönig 13:40, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
Okay, ich mache dann morgen mit dem Übersetzen weiter. Bergkönig 18:56, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
Translation issues
editActually, it was me who asked Brion to take a look at the text when I had worked through a small part of the page, since there were a couple of strange sentences that seemed like translation mistakes. I was only through a third of it, when I made a mistake with my translation program and lost the text - it was not that bad.
I have sympathy for your description of the problem, but has personally very difficult to believe that a solution where every discussion has to be translated is possible. Asking people to provide a summary of their text seems justified, though. Regarding the election material, it is very obvious that many of the candidates have not been thinking about what will happen to the content of their statement when translated. Maybe next time, candidates should be reminded of the fact that any unclarity in their statement risk getting translated to something strange. // habj 08:20, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
A late candidate

Nestedtemplates
editMost parts of Election translations 2006/Sv is in Swedish. However, the subheading "Translators" is in English, the text below the list of translators is in some language unknown to me (esperanto?) and so is the table of red and blue links. It was not like this before... I admit I understand nothing of how all these templates are nested into each other. I do not know how to fix this. May I ask you to take a look? OTOH, this is material only for the translators; I have some people helping me but I am not sure they will look at these pages at all - so if this is difficult to repair, or if same problem appears again, I think we don't have to fix it. // habj 01:36, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
- Close to perfect, thank you! I made a minor change. So, these did not exist before. Hm. I do not remember having seen that langauge mix before, weird... but maybe I have only browsed through that page before. // habj 08:30, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
Traductions

Board of Trustees elections
editHello!
The Wikipedia Signpost, a community-newspaper in the English Wikipedia, is covering the Board of Trustees elections and will be featuring each of the candidates in next week's issue. As such, we would appreciate it if you would take some time to answer a few interview questions. Each candidate will be asked the same questions; by no means, though, feel obligated to answer any (or even) all of them, though we would greatly appreciate it if you did.
Some of the questions may be a bit redundant to the candidate information you have filled out already. This is both for convenience and for giving you the opportunity to expand on some of them a bit. However, we ask that you keep all responses brief, limiting them to no more than one or two paragraphs each.
You may leave replies to my English Wikipedia talk page, my meta talk page, or email them to me. I would appreciate it if responses are in on or before this Saturday, August 26; please have them in at the latest on Sunday the 27th in order for them to be included in Monday's issue.
As always, the Signpost reserves the right to re-distribute the questions and replies, shorten any responses if necessary, and take any other editorial action deemed appropriate.
Thanks again for your time, and please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions! Flcelloguy (A note?) 00:01, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

For example, on the technical level, I believe in interfacing with computer-aided translation tools such as the open source utility Omega-T (to make it easier to translate only the changes in the new version of a document), and to build multilingual discussion support into MediaWiki. (I've authored the specifications for LiquidThreads, which is being implemented as a Summer of Code project by David McCabe, and the Multilingual MediaWiki specs, which are going to be coded by Charles Pritchard with support from the University of Bamberg and Wikia.) It would also be neat to support open source machine translation efforts like Apertium, and to integrate those with MediaWiki.
I also believe that the next-generation dictionary, WiktionaryZ, will help with internationalization efforts. On the social level, we need to build organizational structures which take multilinguality into account, i.e. support local chapters, and bring translators into the Foundation-level processes. One final idea I have is to build a translation assignment management system, so we can easily manage and prioritize the translation tasks that need to be done, and notify translators when a document is ready for translation. If you have other ideas for improving and supporting multilinguality in our projects, please let me know at User talk:Eloquence. Again, thanks for your translation, and please keep up the great work!--Eloquence 21:23, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
Translator in the following language combinations / here: Transbabel templates
editDear Arno,
I have seen that you have worked on several transbabel templates in order to evolve them. I have just done small amendments to two templates (Template:To and Template:I translate from) with regard to German grammar. Thus the templates works now in the direction deu to xyz (e.g. Deutsch ins Esperanto). However it does not work the opposit way xyz to deu (e.g. Esperanto ins Deutsch) since it should show Esperanto ins Deutsche. However, with regard to the German language we do not only need Template:Languagenamein deu (Deutsch), we also need Template:Languagenamein deu2 (Deutsche). Would it be possible to implement this without big problems and not to much effort?
Best regards and keep up your excellent work here
--Marbot 19:13, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
- How about "deu-dat" instead if deu2? --Aphaia 11:37, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
- deu2 was just a working title not meant serious for final implementation. At that time I was unable to think of a better name. --Marbot 18:28, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
- I've created Template:Languagenamefrom and Template:Languagenameto instead only Template:Languagename. So in each language it would be able to say "I translate from A (in from-form name of A language) to B (in to-form name of B language)" as Deutsch / ins Deutsche. AL ✉ 11:47, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
- Wouldn't it be easier to create a Template:Languagenameto deu and summarise the names of the to-form name of language B as we already have a Template:Languagenamein deu which summarises the names of the from-form name of language A. Thus it would be easier for template or even wikipedia beginners to create a template containing a Languagename table for language xyz (Template:Languagenamein xyz/Template:Languagenameto xyz). As it is now we would have to define exeptions to the rule as you already have predicted. However I have no problem with going on with the solution you have come up with in the meantime even though I think it is not flexible enough to deal with exeptions every language has to offer. For example, how would I be able to define an exeption on Template:Languagenametoin deu in order to adapt it to an exeption? Best regards --Marbot 18:28, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
Was meinst Du? Viele Grüße --Marbot 21:43, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
Category i19n
editArno ... very recently I have been considering if we have a good reason to use only English in category description. Er, perhaps it may be too inefficient to have a long description in each page. However it would be convinient to have a brief (within 100 characters or less) description like some our pages have already?
How do you think? --Aphaia 11:35, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

editHi! What do you think about it: User:Przykuta/evolution of Projects, especially about Wikitranslator ? Przykuta 08:31, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
Please read this page Talk:Translator_in_the_following_language_combinations and consider we are now trouble Sabine, one of Transcom member very much. Thanks.
P.S. Would you please include a link to your user page or talk on meta, not only esperanto Wikipedia? I think we are better to discuss meta thing on meta, not elsewhere other. --Aphaia 08:32, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
Arno please reset your change on Election document template. I need red link. Now. Please give me back it. You torment me. Please don't bother me. Please. Because of your "improvement" I cannot do nothing now for my duty. You disturb me very much. We cannot release the result. I have no idea. Please fix it. Now. Thank you. --Aphaia 01:10, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
I found now on the summary "(I suggest we use the new template Template:ElectionBox in every election page : it provides proper links with texts in the choosen language as much as possible to only existing pages)" "I suggest"? Where? Suggest implies discussion I think but you didn't invite anyone to discussion and forcely introduce your template. I state hereby clearly you are not my boss and I am not your slave. I have no reason to work under the environment you forced me and I have a right to set my workplace accoring to my skill and preference. I reverted your some edits to retreave the template you casted away without no discussion with us. Since I as one translator and an officer who are going to make an announcement I need it and I prefer to work with that. Not with your "no red link" template. I don't hate you but I hate your templates "without red link", since with it I cannot understand what I do. Please don't annoy me anymore. --Aphaia 01:26, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
Hi Arno, could you have a look at the entries in the translation box at Election results 2006 and fix the problem regarding capitals/lower case for language subpages? The translation template seems to need lower case … or pages have to be moved. Thank you. --:Bdk: 08:39, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
let me inform you
editRegarding the discussion between you and Aphaia, let me inform you that one of the two things that made me tired of translating things for this election, so I did not care to check for updates while it was running, was these complicated templates making changes in the Swedish text of links which I could not change since I did not know how to. Sometimes it seems people who make templates think they have the right to decide how things should be done simply because they have put lots of effort into creating templates. Words like "vandalism" are completely unacceptable in context, of course. // habj 18:15, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
A. L. Proclamation
editI apologise for failing to translate your Proclamation into my mother tongue and the reasons were given to you on my userpage, on which we had exchanged various comments, mainly help for my translation efforts, for which I am very grateful.
Whilst I disagreed on your proposition of the use of a secondary, common language, mainly from the practical viewpoint of having to teach the whole world to speak Esperanto, I do agree, that communication is far from being easy to understand, not only for those who do not speak (American) English fluently, but also for those who do not understand the jargon. Whilst this is not unique to Wikimedia, but a human behaviour problem where close communities are always prone to invent new words, which all outsiders have to learn, otherwise they will not know what this close community is talking about. In my view sooner or later this situation would develop even in Esperanto.
However, whilst I fully agree with you in condemning this practice in Wikimedia administration what I am even more annoyed about is the facile use of abbreviations, which might be OK for those who know them, but not to newcomers. For your information my objection was voiced in a note to Delphine (copy attached here) to which I seem to have found a seconder (Ceila Sanchez): ----- Dear Delphine, ----- (PS to my previous mail) ----- As I've read & written (at least) 100-s of technical reports in UK English I am aware of the fact that in UK English writing practice the first mention of an abbreviation is normally followed by the meaning written out in full, in brackets, afterwards. The Americans ar also known for being particularly meticulous, even fussy. ----- Could the Wiki writers be instructed to follow this practice, if they are not asked to do so already. This will save a lot of time for the uninitiated readers. Then they will not have to puzzle over the meanings if they thought that it was essential to understand them. ----- Kind regards,-----Louis 19:55, 25 September 2006 (UTC)LouisBB

Translation team fr
editHi. I created a subpage for the French translation team as part of the translation coordination effort. If you consider yourself as a (willing?) active translator (eng-> fra or fra->eng), please add your name on the members' list. Soon, I'll add a selection of pending translation tasks. Thank you!
Bonjour. Je viens de créer une sous page French translation team, dans le but d'améliorer la coordination du processus de traduction. Si vous vous considérez comme un traducteur actif (ou potentiellement actif à court terme), n'hésitez pas à vous ajouter à la liste des membres de l'équipe. J'ajouterai très bientôt une liste de tâche à faire dans le domaine de la traduction fra->eng ou eng->fra. jd ❂ 20:43, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Esperanto translation of a multilingual page

Traduction sur Meta
editSalut, c'est marqué clairement en haut que la traduction n'est pas fini, d'autre part il y a une bonne douzaine de candidat à traduire, la traduction prend du temps, et c'est tellement ennuyeux que personne n'est apparemment prêt à le traduire, même pas toi! Je rappelle que c'est un wiki ici, donc que si quelqu'un n'est pas satisfait de ce quelqu'un d'autre à fait, il peut toujours le changer... Guérin Nicolas (messages) 17:21, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

A+. Sysop bit removal
editI've verified:
- that eo:Speciala:Contributions/Gabriel_BEECHAM was as described
- that YOU wrote the policy and that it reads Se iu administranto ne faris ajnan kontribuon al la Vikipedio ekde unu plena jaro, li estu aŭtomate maladministrantigita de stevardo
- that the user has been notified prior to permission removal
- Do you need anything else?
- --M/ 20:55, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- As long as the aŭtomate word is kept and evidenced in the 3rd case (the one year long inactivity), while I understand your concerns, and I am so sorry about the whole thing, I don't think that any other steward would have raised an objection to the request.
- Ciao, M/ 21:05, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- Please keep in mind the I verified that the statement written by the user were factual. And that I allotted 1 day before the removal, while nobody objected.
- Of course you're right when you ask for a keen verification of anything, even if removing a flag from someone who made his last use of his sysop rights on March 2007 and has totalled 11 deletions, 1 block and 1 protection is not generally seen as a big problem, but instead as a protection of the project for instance in case of a weak password.

I noticed that you translated the fundraiser's core messages into Esperanto (eo), thank you for your help! Although the fundraiser is over, your translation work will still be used until next November (when we get new forms).

Typically, the old eo:User:L would be renamed to eo:User:L (Usurped) Here's a quick link to do this.
L has no local contributions to your project other than requesting the username. He's generated his global account, so the main issue (I think) is that there are a few "L" accounts left which are preventing full unification.
Many of the fully unified users we hear from are active cross-wiki and assist in antivandalism work across multiple projects, though I am unaware as to if this is his case or not. Personally, I don't see any issue with the rename, though ultimately as a local bureaucrat it's your choice: The old user L wasn't contributing either, maybe the new one will? Translator, We need you!
editDear ArnoLagrange,
You have helped us in previous years with translations and for that we are most grateful. Now we turn towards the 2011/12 fundraiser. It may seem forever away, but work has already begun getting everything ready to go. This year we want to have landing pages covering as many countries in as many languages as possible.
Right now, we want to figure out who is interested in translating for the fundraiser. This year we're hoping to have more of a solidified "core" group of translators that we can count on to have work done by a few key dates, but we'd also welcome help from people who are willing to just help out when they can.
If you would be interested please take a look at this little sign-up survey and fill it out http://survey.wikimedia.org/index.php?sid=13638&newtest=Y&lang=en. With that we can start building a list of people and filling any gaps in the languages we serve.
Many Thanks
