Translator in the following language combinations
This page is kept for historical interest. Any policies mentioned may be obsolete. If you want to revive the topic, you can use the talk page or start a discussion on the community forum. |
This page (nickname: Transbabel) shall collect the various language combinations translators can handle. They show you the template used and give you the link to the category where you can find people with that language combinations.
The list previously here is outdated and no longer matches the current practices:
- It no longer matches the Language policy used on Wikimedia and other sites (like OmegaWiki from which the list was initially designed). Please note that initially, the translator's templates were based on ISO 639-3 codes since many languages are not present in ISO 639-2.
- However, Wikimedia sites (and others) prefer using BCP47 codes which are preferably using ISO 639-1 languages codes, when they exist, before ISO 639-3. Most Language codes used in Wikimedia sites are based on the BCP47 standard (a few are specific to Wikimedia). BCP47 also allows combinations for language variants and are interoperable with lots of softwares, they are normatively used in content taggings for the web, notably in HTML and other W3C and IETF standards.
- It is then suggested to migrate all these templates using a new combination format. Additionally the templates used should work within Babel box and should then follow the format
Template:User xxx
where xxx is the tag to use in Babel boxes. IF we want to support all language codes used in Wikimedia, including for language variants, the template names should be then named likeTemplate:User Translator from to
where from and to will be the language codes. - A migration is possible from existing templates based on ISO639-3 codes only to codes used on Babel, using redirects for renamed templates. Templates will be also easier to manage using the
#language
builtin parserfunction supported by MediaWiki, and allow these templates to be also translated as well. - The following extended list is not maintanable and not needed, categories can be used instead to manage lists of users automatically. However, the user categories also need maintenance as well.
- Not all users will want to use a Babel box (or one of the Translator templates in their user page, they could just register themselves by only inserting their user page in the appropriate user category.
For an extensive list of ISO 639 codes have a look at one of the following lists:
- en:List of ISO 639-1 codes
- en:List of ISO 639-3 codes
- the list on SIL - the official list of *all* standardized language codes (but it does not encode regional variants).
- the OmegaWiki babel page - these should include most of the languages we need.(this site no longer uses ISO 639-3 and uses the Babel convention, like Wikimedia sites)
(outdated) You can nest templates within a Babel-like box: Template:Transl-n ({{Transl-n|abc-xyz}}
), if you have three templates, use {{Transl-n|abc-xyz|abc-xyz|abc-xyz}}
, and so on. Note that this does not work with the new format for Babel boxes (based on the #babel
parser function which requires much less maintenance).
