How we will see unregistered users
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Global undo query
Hi Martin, I found your comment in a previous GR permission request, it contains a query result. I wonder if it is possible to share the SQL code with me? Someone would like to build a website to make the analysis of global undo count easier. Thanks! Stang 13:40, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hello @Stang! Thanks for asking. Unfortunately, I don't have the query available anymore, so I can't share it. The report was generated from the
mediawiki_history
dataset compiled by the WMF's data engineers. The dataset is publicly available. - If a tool will be created to automatically show those numbers, it'd be awesome. However, I'm not sure if using the same approach as I did is the best idea, as querying
mediawiki_history
is not going to be the simplest thing to do, sincemediawiki_history
is quite large (half a TB in total). Querying it with the right resources (a lot of RAM) is reasonably fast and quite convenient, but even with a lot of RAM available, queries tend to take minutes if not hours to complete, and that's not suitable for a web app. - It is probably going to be both easier and faster for users to approach the problem differently: (1) calculate current number of undos for all users across all wikis (2) store the numbers in a database (3) build a bot that will increment the stored counts each time it sees an undo in a wiki's RC (https://stream.wikimedia.org can be used to watch recent changes at all wikis at once). Querying the undos count will be very fast: just read some rows from the database. It will not be 100% precise (the bot will likely skip some changes and/or count some twice), but overall, it should be quite reliable. A similar approach is employed by the Wikimedia Hashtags tool.
- Hope this helps. Martin Urbanec (talk) 20:06, 22 January 2022 (UTC)

Username change on Phab
Hi Martin Urbanec, It is been a long time since my username was changed to "TheAafi" globally. However, I notice that I've not been renamed on Phab wiki. Could you please assist with this? Regards. ─ The Aafī (talk) 11:44, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hello @TheAafi, you will need to create a ticket in Phabricator, requesting rename: see phab:T260645 as a past example.
- Renames on the wiki don't automatically cause a rename in Phabricator and elsewhere. It's a separate user account database, so that's why.

- Hi, I just did that. See phab:T300430. Thanks for responding instantly. ─ The Aafī (talk) 11:57, 29 January 2022 (UTC)

Global message delivery automated list is broken
Hello,
wanted to notify you that the code on the global message delivery page is broken. Take for example, if you try to add a user talkpage here, the entire page blanks out. Same thing is happening with other lists created from these delivery shells. Can you please check it out and try to find out what's wrong? Cheers!--SOyeyele (WMF) (talk) 13:49, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hello! Just a ping to this message :).--SOyeyele (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hello @SOyeyele (WMF), sorry and thanks for the reminder. I tried to add/remove few pages here and I can reproduce the issue. I created a test list in my userspace and I'm going to intentionally leave it broken until this is investigated.
- I filled a task in Phabricator, with my own guess about how the bug happens. Let's hope someone can have a look soon! Martin Urbanec (talk) 11:16, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you so much! Hopefully, this gets resolved soon.--SOyeyele (WMF) (talk) 12:11, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
An-tiushpa@avkwiki
Hello. Thank you for validating my admin status on avk.wiki, as User:An-tiushpa. Unfortunately, from now on, I cannot log in or access my account, as authentication requires a secure password. My current password is relatively simple and less than 10 characters long. So I agree to change it, but the procedure for "new password" doesn't work because I didn't specify an email address in my preferences. I would like to do it, but I can't access my original account at all. I have just created this secondary account to be able to communicate with you (with an email address filled in), but how can I access my main account again? Thank you for your help or for telling me how to proceed. --An-tiushpa--. An-tiushpa2 (talk) 18:03, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hello @An-tiushpa2, thanks for the message. I just verified with one of my test accounts what happens if an account with a weak password is promoted to an administrator. In my case, MediaWiki showed this screen and did not allow me to do anything else until I filled a new (stronger) password in the form I screenshotted. I was able to change my password without having an email address on file in that test account.
- Does MediaWiki show a similar error message in your case? If it looks the same, what happens when you enter a new (stronger) password there? If you're still logged in, maybe try logging out (or logging in from a different browser)?
- Screenshot (or a video) would be helpful for me to better understand what's going on at your end. If you wish, feel free to email screenshots privately to martin.urbanec wikimedia.cz.
- Looking forward to your response, Martin Urbanec (talk) 18:17, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you very much. It works. I actually didn't realize that this error message would recognize and save a new password, as the explanation of the message was not very clear. So I entered a new, more complicated password (I'll have trouble remembering it, so I'm forced to write it down, which may not be a great guarantee of security after all) and entered an email address. Everything seems to be working properly again. Thank you again for your help and the speed of your reply. An-tiushpa (talk) 18:48, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
- I'm happy to hear everything works now!
- Security-wise, using a password manager taking care of your passwords is usually a better tradeoff than trying to remember all of them or using a single password everywhere. But, that's of course your call to make -- just saying.

Patrollers group on urwiki
Hi Urbanec, We had reached to consensus last year on Urdu Wikipedia to have a patrollers group. Should I make the guideline pages first or create a phab task first? Looking forward to hear your suggestions. Regards ─ The Aafī (talk) 07:59, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hello @TheAafi, it's not necessary to have a new guideline to successfully request a new group. Community consensus (preferably, via a voting) is sufficient for that. Sincerely, Martin Urbanec (talk) 15:42, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Block for Riccardo
Hi, my coadmin Riccardo Riccioni asked me to communicate with you his concern about a block he encounters on one of the 2 connections he can use. I am not very clear what is blocked but hope you can help to clarify. He thinks you set this block.
1. he sent me this notice he saw Reason of the block: no open proxy Time: 3 years My ID 209.95.56.53 Blocked ones: range 209.95.56.0/24
2. What is the point about "no open proxy" for swwiki? Is it possible that he as admis blocked using this proxy whereas you as non-admin on swwiki can block him? What I can see in the policy page is that this should not affect him as admin?
I appreciate your comment. Kipala (talk) 15:02, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hello @Kipala, thanks for your message. The block you mention is probably a global one, in this case, issued by myself as a Wikimedia steward. Those blocks apply at all wikis, including sw.wikipedia. For details about global blocks, please see Global blocks. For the justification for open proxies blocks in general, I recommend to read the No open proxies. In short, the global community decided in 2006 that open proxies are frequently abused and may be blocked from editing at any time for any period of time. This isn't a reflection on the wikimedians affected by the block – only at the way they're connecting to the Wikimedia projects.
- Admins are not affected by global or local blocks, except when they're applied to their account directly. There's likely no policy about this – this happens because of the default assignment of rights done by MediaWiki. You might see that for yourself by going at sw:Special:ListGroupRights and scrolling to the section for "Administrators", which contains all the rights admins have. One of them is "Bypass IP blocks, auto-blocks and range blocks".
- Riccardo Riccioni should not be affected by any open proxy block at sw.wikipedia, as he's an administrator there. He will, however, likely be affected at all the other projects. The IP address, 209.95.56.53, is assigned to Hosting Services, Inc., a company providing servers for rent rather than residential connections. It seems likely Riccardo Riccioni uses some sort of a VPN – is it possible to disable it while editing? Best, Martin Urbanec (talk) 12:56, 11 February 2022 (UTC)
- To be honest I do not really understand if he can be blocked globally but should not be? I asked Riccardo to try to get thru to you via "Email this user". I think he cannot switch off the proxy, he is our best contributor at the time being but he can only get in thru 2 institutional adresses which he does not run. He has no private access. Two-step authentication
Hi Martin Urbanec,
I'm DARIO SEVERi, a global sysop.
I lost my phone a few months ago and I'm not getting the message with the verification code to add in two-step authentication. I am using the 10 keys (16 numbers or letters) that were sent to me to enter the project in case of emergency, I have already used most of them.
Could you please change my phone number so I can get the message? my current number phone number is before I used or it is possible sending to me other 10 keys so I can keep editing as sysop?
Sincerely DARIO SEVERI (talk) 13:05, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
- Hello @DARIO SEVERI, 2FA is not bound to a specific phone number. Instead, it is connected to the specific instance of the 2FA app you use. Depending on the 2FA app you decided to use, it might be possible to restore its state using information provided to you when installing it.
- If it doesn't work, you should be able to reset your 2FA status yourself, assuming you're still logged in (and have a nonzero amount of scratch codes left). The recommended workflow is to disable 2FA temporarily (a scratch token 'will be necessary in this process). Immediately after disabling the 2FA, you should be able to re-enable 2FA, which will a) give you a new set of scratch codes b) connect your account with your new phone.
- Let me know how this works :). Best, Martin Urbanec (talk) 13:18, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks Martin Urbanec, I will try tomorrow morning, here in Thailand it's already a little late at night. DARIO SEVERI (talk) 13:21, 11 April 2022 (UTC)

Blocked editor
Hello, Martin,
It looks like User:Andyyeunguser created the same junk pages and categories on Meta that he did on en.wikipedia. I'm not sure how to tag pages for deletion here but they surely aren't making any contribution to this project. Thanks. Liz (talk) 19:57, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
- Hey @Liz! Thanks for the message. Pages can be deleted via {{delete}} directly. There's smaller backlog of deletion requests than at ie. enwiki, so we only have a single template . Hope this helps! Best, Martin Urbanec (talk) 21:23, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

- As to your indefinite block, I can't do anything with it (at least not now). I recommend appealing it with other mn.wikipedia admins (you can message them on meta or email them). Best wishes, Martin Urbanec (talk) 12:47, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

- Hello @Munkhzaya.E, thank you for leaving me a message. Unfortunately, my talk page is not meant to serve as a place to report abusive users. Can you please post such reports at SRG instead, where more stewards are likely to see it? If your report is urgent, you can always find at least one steward in the #wikimedia-steward IRC channel. Thank you for your understanding. Sincerely, Martin Urbanec (talk) 18:21, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks (regarding page moves)
Hi Martin! Thank you for performing the mass deletions earlier today at a wikivoyage project. I apologize for consistently tagging legitimate pages (so the random page names could be moved back to the legitimate pages). Tropicalkitty (talk) 17:23, 2 September 2022 (UTC)
- Hey, happy to help, and no worries at all. Your deletion tags did not come into my way . Hopefully I caught everything, if you can double-check it, that'd be great. If there's anything I missed, feel free to let me know, so I can fix it up. Best wishes, Martin Urbanec (talk) 17:46, 2 September 2022 (UTC)
Remove id.wiktionary from SMWT
Hi, can you please remove id.wiktionary from Special:WikiSets/7? We have 3 active admins. Thanks. ✒ Bennylin 05:04, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
- Hello @Bennylin, thanks for the message! To be honest, I'm not sure if I understand your request correctly. The WikiSet you linked is opt-out based, which means wikis that are included in it are opted-out from something (in this case, from global sysops). id.wiktionary is not actually included (field "Wikis"), which means global sysops are currently authorized at id.wiktionary.
- Do you want to change that (and disallow global sysops, by adding the wiki to the WikiSet)? If so, why, if I may ask? AFAICS, id.wiktionary meets the scope as defined by policy (there are two conditions; wiki needs to have less than 3 active admins or less than 10 admins total; AFAICS, id.wiktionary has 4 admins total).
- Looking forward to hearing more from you, Martin Urbanec (talk) 05:35, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, since we have 3 active admins at the moment, we should not be in the global sysop set. Yes, please disallow/opt-out idwikt. Thanks. ✒ Bennylin 05:40, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for clarifying that @Bennylin. As I mentioned in my previous message, I believe id.wiktionary currently meets the scope for global sysops defined by policy (there is less than 10 admins total; the two conditions are in an OR relationship). This means that global sysops are allowed there by default (unless community opts-out via consensus).
- I just realized that the headline says "Remove id.wiktionary from SWMT". I'd like to note that disallowing global sysops does not mean that the Small Wiki Monitoring Team will stop patrolling the wiki – it only means global sysops will not be able to block vandals/delete vandalism. Reverting vandalism will likely continue (and it's kind of impossible to prevent people from monitoring RC).
- Hopefully this makes sense. Best, Martin Urbanec (talk) 05:43, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
- Correct, that's the idea. They are still allowed to patrol, but not block and/or delete. We have enough manpower to do the blocking/deleting. ✒ Bennylin 05:51, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification. As I said above, the wiki currently meets the scope defined by the global sysops policy. It's not possible to disable global sysops until and unless the community decides to opt-out via consensus.
- Personally, I'd like to strongly discourage you from doing that, during night attacks of vandals, it might be useful (see [3] as an example, vandal moved 7500 pages overnight). But, if you insist, it's possible, but an explicit consensus is necessary (or growing to 10+ admins total).
- Thank you for understanding. Sincerely, Martin Urbanec (talk) 06:55, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
- You can read the back story on my last edits on id.wikt. Basically, some of the global admins are too heavy handed and blocked people who I believe did not deserve to be blocked permanently, and against our welcoming culture. I've contacted the global admin in question, and they refused to stop doing what they were doing, citing this policy. I have no problem with other SMWT team patrolling, tagging something to be deleted, reverting, etc. but not blocking and/or deleting something that might not follow the local custom.
- As you said, when a project have 3 active admins, then that project is not supposed to be in the small wiki list anymore, and id.wikt already fulfilled that criteria. We didn't ask to be added in the SMWT patrol list (however good they might be, which I'm grateful for all the volunteers) in the first place, and now it is required a consensus to undo something that we didn't ask? Could you point me to the rule that says that? Are you the sole person for responsible to the list, or should I go to SR? Thank you. ✒ Bennylin 07:32, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
- I believe I linked the policy in my previous messages, but perhaps it was not clear. I'll try to re-explain that now.
- The policy that governs access by global sysops is at Global sysops (the Scope section). This policy specifies two different conditions. If any of them is met, global sysops can use their permissions by default (that is, unless a community reaches a different consensus). Those conditions are:
- Number of active admins (needs to be less than 3). This condition is not met.
- Number of total admins (needs to be less than 10). This condition is met.
- This is defined by the Scope section of the global sysops policy. That policy says "global sysops may use [their permissions] on wikis that meet one or both of the following criteria: fewer than ten administrators exist; or fewer than three administrators have made a logged action within the past two months.". As far as I can see, id.wiktionary has less than 10 total admins. As such, by policy, global sysops are allowed to use their permissions there by default. Of course, the community can change/override the default, but that needs explicit consensus -- I can't do that based on a request from one of the community members. I hope you understand that.
- To answer your question: No, I'm not the only one responsible for the list, I just happen to be the only Steward who changed it in the last few months. You can make a request at SRM, but any other Steward will have to reach the same conclusion, as the policy currently specifies a pretty clear procedure to follow, based on the size of the wiki.
- Thank you for your understanding. Sincerely, Martin Urbanec (talk) 14:37, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

Question
Dear Martin Urbanec, I hope you're very happy in your life, what is SWMT 'whitelist , sometimes I seen a userprofile which have specific Userright the top of the profile a small picture of SWMT such example are as following *On whitelist added by Wiki13: No reason given Why a stewards or Administrators on meta few users add in the whitelist of Stewards, what does it do, can you help me about this Question? Thanks.Aviram NoSurprisesPlease 14:08, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
- Hello @Aviram7, thanks for the question! There are many tools that help with cross wiki patrol, and some of them have a whitelist/allowlist. I can help you figure out how an allowlist is generated, if you can give me a link to a particular allowlist? Have a wonderful day, Martin Urbanec (talk) 14:19, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
- Dear Martin, Thats great i have no link but But I don't know what happens with this? Aviram NoSurprisesPlease 14:56, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
- I'd love to help you with that @Aviram7, but there are several such whitelists/allowlists. In other words, before I can help you with understanding how a list is maintained, I need to know which list you mean: ie. where you saw "On whitelist added by Wiki13: No reason given" (in the form of a link, tool name or something similar). I hope this makes sense! Martin Urbanec (talk) 15:46, 2 October 2022 (UTC)

Permission to create multiple accounts
Hello @Martin Urbanec
I need your help
1) I coordinate the project. I organize training workshops during this month and it will be the same thing next January. I encounter difficulties when users create their account. Since it's limited to 6 and they mostly use my IP address. How can you help me please?
2) I am working on the Haitian Creole Wikipedia updating the help pages. It requires that I go from time to time on several projects (Commons, mediawiki, meta, to apply certain things). I noticed almost every day during the day, that I can no longer access any Wikimedia project, while it is accessible on all other sites. It can take between 12 to 24 hours. Do you think it can come from the administration of the wikis? Can I have a solution?
Thanks already for your help. Very cordially! Kitanago (talk) 11:16, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
- Hello @Kitanago,
- Thanks for your question! Find my reply below.
- 1) This problem is unfortunately happening to a lot of workshop organizers. Potential solutions are described at Mass account creation. Hope this helps! If you have any question about any of the suggested solutions, let me know.
- 2) Wikimedia projects themselves have a pretty high uptime. If the projects are really unavailable for you for 12-24 hours a day, I think it's an issue somewhere between your ISP, and WMF's ISP. When the projects are unavailable for you, try connecting via a different internet connection (school/work connection, mobile connectivity or similar). Alternatively, you might also report the issue to your ISP.
- Hope this helps! Martin Urbanec (talk) 12:02, 14 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi Dear Martin , A Ip user was vandalism on your User :Martin Urbanec/header. Please protect your page and globally block this ip for more information please see Meta:RFH. Kind regards → คⅴīгค๓ ([ʆεt'ς tαʆƘ🇮🇳])← 16:38, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @Aviram7. I blocked the IP locally at Meta (global block would not help, as they don't apply to Meta).
- For protection, I think it is better if vandals vandalize my user page than if they vandalize articles. I hope this makes sense.
- Sincerely, Martin Urbanec (talk) 18:02, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
- Dear Martin, Ya! I'm aware about globally block not work on meta except other wikis, any IP or registered users who is promoting vandalism is blocked only to prevent him from doing this lousy work, although I see on meta some IPs are blocked for a limited time, expect that from them It is known that they will only contribute positively on meta, but they tend to vandalize again by unblocking or changing the IP, which I do not like, I believe hardblocking the IP is a good option.kind regards → คⅴīгค๓ ([ʆεt'ς tαʆƘ🇮🇳])← 04:25, 4 November 2022 (UTC)

Hello, I am replying here because the request was archived and I cannot modifiy the archive page. Thanks for removing robot rights on brwiki. Unfortunately, somehow when I made the list, for some usernames that had spaces in them, only the first word remained. Here are the remaining inactive bots:

Hi Martin, I am Nivas, from the organizing team of WikiConference India 2023. We have opened the scholarships applications and program submissions for the communities in India and a few in South Asian region. The last date to submit the program and scholarship applications is 14 December 2023 and a CentralNotice request has been placed to promote the same. It has been two weeks already since I placed the request on Meta. So, I am contacting you to see if you could help me with this. Thank you! Nivas10798 (talk) 05:33, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
HELP
Hello Martin, If you set 2FA and the device is burned/damaged and no longer have access to Tokkens with no backup tokens, can a Steward or Bureaucrats disable 2FA for a user? The user have email and knows their password. Thanks. Jason Worthwood (talk) 04:14, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
- Hello @Jason Worthwood, no, the Stewards or Bureaucrats don't have that ability (Stewards can only see if you have 2FA enabled or not, they can't change that). This situation is covered at Help:Two-factor_authentication#Recovering_from_a_lost_or_broken_authentication_device, where you should find guidance. Hope that helps. Range IP block
Hello Martin. Wikidata said me when I saved my edit, you blocked by Martin as globally in this range block, so I didn't saved my edit. But in second attempt, I managed to saved my edit. Why Wikidata didn't permission me in my first attempt? It blows my mind because my IP is different. --Uncitoyentalk 13:43, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
- Hello @Uncitoyen, this is due to a system configuration error that made WMF's servers think you edit from a server-IP. Server IPs are usually blocked, because no users are supposed to edit from those IPs. The WMF's engineers resolved the user-impact in between your first and second edit attempt, and that is the reason why your second edit was successful. Apologies for the inconvenience. More details are in phab:T324018. Sincerely, Martin Urbanec (talk) 13:48, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

- It's a human error, it unfortunately happens from time to time. Anyway, this should no longer affect any users now. Martin Urbanec (talk) 13:57, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation, Martin. Disregard my message to you on your talk page on Wikidata. It initially gave me quite a shock, but after studying the block details I figured it probably wasn't directed at me, personally. :) Desoda (talk) 14:06, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
