Should donators messages be translated? --WizardOfOz 00:55, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, most languages translated the donor quotes. Cbrown1023 talk 00:57, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fundraising 2009/thank you/eo edit

Hi Cbrown,

Is there any way the translated banner could be already published on the Esperanto Wikipedia, even though the core text hasn't been translated ? Unfortunately I have neither the time nor the competence to translate the whole thing, and I'm afraid there's no other volunteer for the moment. That big English banner is actually quite disruptive on our main page, and it would look much better in Esperanto.

Many thanks ! Thomas Guibal 10:47, 6 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Thomas, I've published the Esperanto centralnotice. You should see the translated version of the banner appear in 30 minutes or so. :-)--Az1568 (talk) 20:58, 6 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Translation for CentralNotice/Global sysops edit

Sorry (and tanks). I'm a still inexperienced French contributor on fr.wikipedia, I read English, but I can't really write a correct one. I am new on Wiki, and don't understand already all its subtilities ! But... I was teaching French language, so... je n'aime pas voir des fautes de français ! --Eymery 10:53, 7 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hehe, no problem at all. Thanks for translating! :-) Cbrown1023 talk 23:54, 7 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Global sysops/ar edit

noticed that you Undo the addition of the class=Persian instead of class=rtl, there is no class in Arabic which reads from right to left, this was provided in class=Persian. The use of class=rtl add more difficulty in reading and Cause overlapping paragraphs especially when you add another language that reads from left to right.Peadara 15:52, 11 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm the one who maintains the persian and rtl classes. We used to use "class=persian" for every rtl language (because that's how it was originally coded), but now we've added a "class=rtl" that does the exact same thing as "class=persian". If it doesn't do the exact same thing, could you tell me what the issues are so that I can fix them? We should be using "class=persian" less and "class=rtl" more, since this one's more general. In response to: Translation statuses edit

Hi Cbrown1023!

I'm new to this, and as I saw some texts in need of translation, I wanted to give some help. I'm sorry for having misused the Published status, I promise I'll be more careful next time. Other languages either had Published, Needs Updating, In Progress or Missing, and so I just thought I had to copy the first one. Thank you for your correction! But I have a question: should I now remove the Published status from all my edits?

Thanks once more! GTNS 05:39, 16 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Nah, you don't need to fix the status of all your edits, I think I've already published most of them. Cbrown1023 talk 23:27, 16 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Lossless image compression for Www.wikipedia.org template edit

I'm not sure if I should post this here or at Talk:Www.wikipedia.org template, but I'll try here first.

The images being used for the Www.wikipedia.org template template could be losslessly compressed...saving a few kilobytes. You could save 1kb on the apple touch png, 1kb on the wikitionary logo, and a bit more on the others. Now while, those few kbs aren't much, given that http://www.wikipedia.org/ is the main page many people go to, it gets tens of thousands of views a day.(probably a lot more). I wanted to suggest that you change/update some of these with losslessly compressed ones(the file size of the picture would go down, with absolutely no effect on the image quality).

There is a free tool offered by yahoo called smushit at http://www.smushit.com/ysmush.it/ which can losslessly compress these images. Please consider updating the images to losslessly compressed ones. You may respond at my wikipedia talk page, as I won;t be watching here. w:User talk:Smallman12q Thanks! Smallman12q 18:59, 17 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello Smallman12q and thanks for your message. You should probably either bring this up on Talk:Www.wikipedia.org template or User talk:Mxn. Those places have people more knowledgeable about this than me. ;-) Cbrown1023 talk 19:11, 17 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wikimania 2011 edit

You're previously involved in bid process for hosting Wikimania in Toronto. Right now we're forming a bid team for Wikimania in 2011. Would you be interested? OhanaUnitedTalk page 17:19, 22 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Toronto has always had issues with actually getting active people to plan and commit to a bid, so I'd rather wait and see if others help out first. (I don't actually live near Toronto, after all.) Plus, I'd actually prefer a Wikimania in Montréal. ;-) Cbrown1023 talk 21:46, 22 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks but no thanks edit

Hey 99.56.138.51. Thanks for submitting a Wikimania bid for Stanford. Have you considered creating an account? Wikipedia has a list of reasons why creating an account is a good idea, and a lot of those reasons also apply here. Cbrown1023 talk 00:45, 29 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I prefer to refrain from creating accounts in response to the way I have been treated in certain content disputes, and in solidarity with new users so that I can better understand the problems and systemic biases they face. I believe creating accounts leads to cults of personality, and raises authorship above the accuracy of text in many cases. I want no further part of that when I can avoid it. Thank you, though, for reaching out to help. 99.56.138.51 01:11, 29 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
No problem, I can respect that stance. Cbrown1023 talk 01:19, 29 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fundraising 2009/supplementary messages/la edit

Hi! Thanks for waking me up. I believe a couple of fellow Latinists have taken a look at the page long ago, but I was driven away by everyday life. I made a few changes (hiding Notes that, I take it, aren't part of the message). Now the Latin text is ready for being published. Could you do that for me? I'm not sure about the procedure. Thanks! --Neander 17:49, 21 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Indeed, how does one mark things as "proofread" if one proofreads? I think Neander's latin is so good that no one needs to proofread his translations for them to e accepted.--24.183.186.151 17:54, 21 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
[Edit conflict:] I may possibly have guessed how to do this. I went to the [+/-] at the top of the box on the right side of the page (which may or may not be the Translation status box), clicked it, and was able to change "proofreading" to "done". (Not exactly user-friendly!) Can you add the material now? Andrew Dalby 18:26, 21 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
I tried adding the words "Translation status box" to the box (on the assumption that my guess was correct, and thinking it might some day help another reader of the help page), but it won't take them. Dear old Meta! Andrew Dalby 18:32, 21 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'll go ahead and publish it. In the future, just change the status to |la |ready when you're done proofreading it. (That tells us "the translation is ready to be published".) Cbrown1023 talk 18:24, 21 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thank you in advance. --Egmontaℨ 12:31, 6 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Request edit

Hello Casey, you can remove the <nowiki></nowiki> tags from this messages?

Thanks :D. ---- @lestaty discuţie 15:53, 17 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

ps: I know I can do this, but I do not feel comfortable using the flag of steward to do something like a sysop.

Hey Lestaty, this should actually be done on Translatewiki, if it all, since it's an error in the original site message. However, it looks like quite a few of those have the English default set to use <nowiki> too, so maybe it's supposed to be like that? Cbrown1023 talk 22:32, 17 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
It looks like this issue exists with every language, so you should probably bring it up on translatewiki:Support. Cbrown1023 talk 23:13, 17 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I think this is a problem from translatewiki too, because the messages on translatewiki is ok, but here no... Thanks for the help :P /me abraça Casey ---- @lestaty discuţie 23:59, 17 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Current code does not contain nowiki in the centralauth-log area[1], and there do not appear to be any local overrides[2] to speak of. Best file a bugzilla:bug; it's not in the twn domain. Siebrand 00:55, 18 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
More info: the nowiki has been removed from the English messages[3], but somehow LocalisationUpdate is not kicking in to update the translations... Solution is to have Wikimedia update the source codes more often than once every 5 months or less. Typical issue of translatewiki:FAQ, item 1. Siebrand 00:58, 18 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Interlanguage sorting order edit

Hi! Regarding this edit: Is the correct sorting order in Meta really the one ordered by the language code? I can't seem to find any place where it's defined. The Meta:Interlanguage links page doesn't mention the ordering at all. However, both the main page and Meta:Interlanguage links actually order the interlanguage links by local language, not by the language code. Which one is it? Jafeluv 21:48, 14 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

There aren't any hard-and-fast rules, but I've always ordered them by language-code and that's what has always seemed most prevalent to me. Feel free to change it back if you'd like. Cbrown1023 talk 01:14, 15 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Okay, thanks for the explanation. I've changed it back; hope you don't mind. Regards, Jafeluv 06:29, 15 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Recent Changes IRC feed edit

Hi Cbrown, In reference to this edit, do you have more information on what those IRC recent changes feeds are used for? It might be helpful to include some general info about those uses in the article, even if we don't mention specific bots. Perhaps we can include a link to a category, e.g. Category:Scripts that use the IRC recent changes feed. Thanks, Tisane 06:24, 26 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well, that page is for listing IRC channels, not for listing bots/scripts. The thing is that the IRC recent changes feeds can be used for anything you want. :-) However, the most common is usually anti-vandalism (both by humans and by bots) and just RC watching (i.e. setting up a bot in #wikimania-gdansk that lists all of the changes made to Wikimania-related pages). Yeah, I didn't see any changes in the text also, but I guessed I was just overlooking it. Huib talk 15:34, 8 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
In fact if I'm asking this it's because another user of the Breton Wikipedia told we that the text wasn't correct and he had corrected it, but no changes have been seen. It's because he didn't ask anyone to actualize the new translation. For all to be clear I asked to other users to translate it again, and I've corrected it one more time. So now it should be okay for a new update, and all will be fine. Could you do it, and it will be the end of the story ;-) --Y-M D 21:29, 8 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Localized logo oh hindi wikipedia edit

Hi Cbrown1023, I have recieved a message on hindi wiki mainpage talk by an ip 92.20.215.176. if it was really you than thank you for contacting us regarding this the translation of thses lines are as follows-

  • Wikipedia=विकिपीडिया
  • The Free Encyclopedia =एक मुक्त विश्वकोश

and I want also an assistance from you that we want to update some extensions on hindi wiki. like abuse filter and to add some user group like reveiwers, rollbackers to improve quality standard.I am an admin there with same name but we have not any previledge to add any rollbackers or reveiwers and confirmed users like english wiki can you help in this matter. we will be grateful to you.Regards-- mayur kumar | talk

Hmm, that wasn't from me. The IP must've copied it from some other wiki where I posted that announcement. I'm pretty sure we actually already had Hindi Wikipedia's information on Wikipedia logo in each language, but thanks for giving it to me anyway!
If you would like to add things like the AbuseFilter, rollbackers, etc., you have to get agreement among the Hindi Wikipedians first. Then, you have to request that the developers enable these things on Bugzilla. Cbrown1023 talk 17:10, 13 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Macedonian translation of funding survey edit

Hello Casey, I have done the revision and corrections for the last part of Fundraising 2010/Survey/Translation/mk that I somehow omitted. Now it has a 'Ready' status.

Awesome, thanks! It wasn't your fault about the missing questions – those strings were added later and I guess you missed the update.

I am also keen on translating the Lime Survey interface, that is, to check the current translation, re-work it if necessary, and complete it. I see on the list both .PO and .MO files, and I'd like to know which one I should be working on. I'll also appreciate if I can get any extra info about it from you.

Awesome, thanks! Personally, the only one I actually know how to use is .PO, so I'd use that. :P
You might find this tutorial on Translating LimeSurvey helpful. --Az1568 (talk) 14:38, 14 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Just one more thing. I am the chief Macedonian translator of MediaWiki on translatewiki.net and for most things Wikimedia. Since I am the co-ordinator and have the final say in revisions, I'd like to be the one who will be contacted first about translations and any problems thereof. Thanks a lot! --B. Meeting edit

Hi all,

I'd like to have a meeting on IRC this week to discuss the 2010-2011 annual appeal/fundraiser. This will be an "anyone is welcome" type meeting, open to the broad community. During this, Zack Exley and I will take you through our inital thoughts about the fundraiser and its organization, and ask you to join us in a discussion about the (massive) role of volunteers and chapters in this year's fundraiser.

Because of the vagaries of time zones, scheduling live meetings is hard. So, we'll have a couple of potential times, and we'll log and post the meeting for anyone who wasn't able to make it.

The meetings will be held Thursday, 12 August at 23:00 UTC (16:00 PDT) and Friday, 13 August at 16:30 UTC (09:30 PDT) in the #wikimedia-fundraising channel on the freenode network on IRC (irc://irc.freenode.net/wikimedia-fundraising). You can access this using freenode's webclient, which is available at http://webchat.freenode.net/ or by using your favorite IRC client.

Help with Low German (nds) project logos edit

Hey Marcus. I am collecting project names and slogans as part of a logo cleanup. Could you tell me if these are correct or translate them if they're in English?

  • Wikipedia = Wikipedia
  • The Free Encyclopedia = Dat friee Nokieksel
  • Wiktionary = Wikiwöörbook
  • the free dictionary = ?
  • Wikibooks = Wikibooks (or maybe "Wikiböker"? It seems like Wikibooks is used on the actual wiki)

Could you please respond my Meta-Wiki talk page? Thanks in advance! Cbrown1023 diskuschoon 19:41, 12. Aug. 2010 (CEST)

"Wikipedia" is Wikipedia.
"The Free Encyclopedia" is Dat friee Nokieksel in the current logo, but if you plan to clean up the logo, this should be changed to Dat fre’e Nakieksel which is a more consistent spelling (this spelling is also used on the Mainpage of nds.wp).
"Wiktionary" is Wikiwöörbook.
"the free dictionary" is Dat fre’e Wöörbook.
"Wikibooks" is Wikiböker.
"Open books for an open world" is Apen Böker för en apen Welt; "Free books for a free world" is Fre’e Böker för en fre’e Welt. Both slogans are acceptable and have basically the same connotations as in English (Except that fre’e does not carry the meaning of "free as in free beer"). --::Slomox:: >< 19:06, 12 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello. I am collecting project names and slogans as a part of a logo cleanup. Would you mind verifying/translating the following phrases for the Faroese (fo) Wiktionary logo?

  • Wiktionary = Wikiorðabókin
  • the free dictionary = ?

Please put your translation on my Meta-Wiki talk page. Thanks in advance for your help! Cbrown1023 kjak 25. aug 2010 kl. 15:39 (UTC)

Hello Cbrown1023. Wikiorðabókin is a good word for Wiktionary. Translation into Faroese of "the free dictionary = hin frælsa orðabókin". (I had my doubts if I shoul use the word frælsa or fríða, frælsi means free as in freedom, fríða could also mean "for free", I can see that the Icelandic translation has choosen the word "frjálsa" which is the same as the Faroese word "frælsa" (frælsur in maskulinum), the word "orðabók" is a feminin word in Faroese, that is why frælsa ends with an a. The Icelandic translation does not use the definite word "hin" before the word, as I have done in my translation, but the Danish translation uses "den" in front of the word for dictionary, and in English there is "the". I don't know if it is more correct to keep the "hin" in Faroese, I think it is.
  • Wiktionary = Wikiorðabókin
  • the free dictionary = hin frælsa orðabókin

Interlingue translation edit

Salute! Here is my translation for Interlingue:

It is not very problematic to find words, I will make suggestions and I can send them to the Interlingue Yahoo Group to see if someone has better ideas. In Interlingue it is possible to keep international common words and not to change them. So it is possible to use "Wikionary" and "Wikibooks" as words.

           * Wiktionary = Wiktionary (or "Wiktionarium", the suffix -arium signals a scientiffic collection)
           * the free dictionary = li dictionarium líber
           * Wikibooks = Wikibooks or "wiki-libres"
           * Open books for an open world (or "Free books for a free world" if that's easier to translate) = "Libres líber por un munde líber".

(That means "free books for a free world" and the word "líber" means "free" also in the sence open. In Interlingue it is both possible to put the adjectives before or after the noun.) Valodnieks 12:11, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I exchanged some e-mails with other Interlingue specialists and agreed on the following terms:
 * Wiktionary = "Wiktionarium
 * the free dictionary = li liber dictionarium
 * Wikibooks = "Wikilibres"
 * Open books for an open world (or "Free books for a free world" if that's easier to translate) = "Apert libres por un apert munde".

Hello Cbrown1023, yes just saw your mail, I hadn't checked my mail in a long time. posting on pa wiki would be fatser for me, i believe. and yes I'd traslate to Punjabi.

  • Wiktionary = ਵਿਕਸ਼ਨਰੀ
  • the free dictionary = ਇੱਕ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਸ਼ਬਦਕੋਸ਼
  • Wikibooks = ਵਿਕਿਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ (ਵਿਕਿ = Wiki and ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ = punjabi word for books)
  • Open books for an open world (or "Free books for a free world" if that's easier) = ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਦੁਨਿਆ ਲਈ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ (ਆਜ਼ਾਦ means free and ਦੁਨਿਆ = world)

New vector interface on swahili wikipedia edit

Some swahili wikipedia users have been taken by surprise by the new vector interface and are complaining about it. In particular, they are worried about having to update all the basic editing help pages and tutorials at the present time, when there is a new project about to start on health pages, apparently, which will not be successful if the new users can't get to grips with how to edit. Things like updating help pages take a very long time on Swahili Wikipedia because of the small number of active, computer-savvy contributors. I have been asked to find out whether it is possible for the swahili wikipedia not to have the new interface, at least for now. Do you know anything about this, or if not, could you advise me who to consult, either on Meta or the Usability Wiki? The preceding unsigned comment was added by Lloffiwr (talk • contribs) 13:01, 21 September 2010 (UTC).Reply

Template:Other languages/Fundraising 2010 edit

Olá C. Brown

You did that edit in {{Other languages/Fundraising 2010}} template, but that give us a problem with pages like Fundraising 2010/Messages and Fundraising 2010/Introduction. Isn't better leave with the {{PAGENAME}}??

Kisses, Béria Lima msg 14:49, 10 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Olá, Béria. I tried to explain why I did it in the next edit. If we put {{PAGENAME}} in there, the template won't work on pretty much all of the pages. For example, Fundraising 2010/pt would display all the links to the other language pages as things like Fundraising 2010/pt/en and Fundraising 2010/pt/fr. It's probably better to just make separate templates for each page, since they'll likely have different translations. Cbrown1023 talk 19:12, 11 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
