Globally blocked IP address

Can you tell me why this[1] address was unblocked at enwiki? It's being used by this sockpuppet]. Doug Weller (talk) 12:07, 8 October 2016 (UTC)

Is it? I don't have idea why the link you gave shows the globally blocked ip notification. I only globally blocked IP 185.89.250.21, and not anything related to 49.144.222.*. Maybe it's a bug? --Stryn (talk) 12:28, 8 October 2016 (UTC)

It's certainly a bug. Even if you put 11.111 the global block log is there. Nothing related to those IP's that you mentioned. I don't have computer / time now to investigate this more, but I will put a link somewhere pointing to this discussion. Stryn (talk) 20:59, 8 October 2016 (UTC)

No renaming between November 20 and November 27

Request for advice or assistance

Hi Stryn. I'm hoping for your advice or even your assistance. You very kindly fixed the massmessage reference problem at fiwiki, using AWB. I've been trying to fix it at all the other locations, but I keep hitting problems. -- Briefly: I tried to learn how to use PAWS to fix it, but ran into code-errors; I tried installing WINE in order to learn AWB, but got thoroughly confused; I tried asking legoktm for help and he kindly did some fixes, but then got overwhelmed with schoolwork. -- It was also unclear to me whether I could even request a global-bot flag (if I had managed to get PAWS or AWB working), as there doesn't seem to be a process for this kind of request. All my notes are at User:Quiddity (WMF)/MassMessage fixes. I throw myself on your experience, in the hopes you can help me resolve this. Hi, I think I can't help much, as I'm not really a programmer, just always trying to find some not-so-handful solutions. But anyway,

What I did in fiwiki was:

1. With AWB I got a list of User contribs of "MediaWiki message delivery". It will show you the latest 25 000 pages edited by the given user. Then click "filter" to remove the duplicate pages and only show user talk pages.
2. In Find and replace put in the find box "<!-- Viestin on lähettänyt Käyttäjä:EGalvez (WMF)@metawiki käyttämällä luetteloa, joka on sijainnissa https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Community_Engagement_Insights/MassMessages/Lists/2016/16-AEWE&oldid=16205362 --> or shorter part of this message and replace with "<!-- Viestin on lähettänyt Käyttäjä:EGalvez (WMF)@metawiki käyttämällä luetteloa, joka on sijainnissa https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Community_Engagement_Insights/MassMessages/Lists/2016/16-AEWE&oldid=16205362 -->

But "2016/16-AEWE&oldid=16205362" is not the only "code", there were 2-3 others as well at least on fiwiki.

Also, I think getting user contribs is not the best way to get results of those messages with title "Share your experience and feedback as a Wikimedian in this global survey". But for fiwiki it was easy as there are not so many users, and I fixed those pages not long time after they were sent. Meta-Wiki gives 190 results for "Share your experience and feedback as a Wikimedian in this global survey" in user talk pages.

I don't know how to fix all those messages globally, at least it's slow with AWB, as you always need to change the site where you are logged in. Stryn (talk) 17:41, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

The Twitter bug & the Two Column Edit Conflict extension  :-)

Hey Stryn, we really had fun at the weekend when one person of our team discovered your bug report on Twitter :-D - sorry that I continue the discussion here for now ... but not all of us are Twitter users ;). Adam tried to reproduce the behaviour you've detected, but failed. At the moment we have no idea if the bug is related to our extension or if the source is elsewhere. It looks really weird - as if you had an edit conflict with yourself, and the highlighted conflicted changes are your signature and your signature in the form of the 4 tildes ... . To better understand what happened: You wrote that you just normally replied and saved the page and then immediately got the edit conflict view. So, after you wrote your answer, you saved your text and after saving it you got that screen? Without clicking on edit again? And beside using mobile/Android Firefox browser, is there anything else you could think of? -- thanks a lot! P.S: (including Revi) - also thanks to both of you for the feedback, we're really happy to hear that the extension looks good! If you have any other remarks about what is working good or what could be improved, please let us know (central feedback page is here). A bit of background on the feature and why it's currently only on dewiki, meta, mediawiki, arwiki, hewiki - The feature is the realization of the top 1 wish of the German-speaking community's technical wishlist, done by WMDE's Technical Wishes team. When we rolled out our last beta feature (RevisionSlider), it helped us a lot to first deploy the beta feature to a couple of Wikis, then find and address the most crucial bugs and improve it based on the first feedback before we provided it as a beta feature to all wikis. Because of this good experience, we decided to go the same way with the Two Column Edit Conflict View. Hi, nice to hear that you had fun there :). I don't know what caused the edit conflict. I write on Wikimedia projects on my phone about 5-10 times in a month, and never got a similar (conflicting with myself) edit conflict before. As I said, after I saved the page, I got the message immediately, and I'm sure I didn't press the edit button again. But if this only happened once, and only for me, I think it's not worth of investigating more. But I'll let you know if I encounter it ever again. Sysop Removal of access

Hello, we have been waiting for sysop removal of access for Xoser of Zazaki Wikipedia since almost a week. Xoser used two sock puppets for local dicussion (Neribij and Kirmanciye) although We stated that Zazaki Wikipedia is so small and a third sysop is needless and so there is a consensus about remove Xoser's sysop access. Dear Stryn, I added my signature and I fixed it. But I dont understand something, we say to you that Xoser had automatically been desysopped due to the rule of 2 years of inactivity. Xoser met the AAR inactivity criteria. But a steward made him sysop again, only for his demand. This is unfair. If so, all members can demand this from stewards. When we started local discussion on Zazaki Wikipedia, he came out after 3 years of inactivity. He did nothing for Zazaki Wikipedia for 3 years. Xoser did nothing for Zazaki Wikipedia but he does not want to be desysopped too. This is not a child game. Why don't you deal with this problem? We have been waiting for almost more than two weeks. Dear Stryn, but first desysop discussion had opened because of his AAR and there was a statement on local discussion stated that he was not active for 3 years (2014-2017). Please look at here Melos says you have to become active again because you meet the AAR inactivity criteria. This person (Xoser) met AAR inactivitiy criteria. The range blocked seems to be arbitrary, hindering editing efforts, thus decreasing incentive for any future attempts to even try to refine awkward and misleading texts. We demonstrated that all these accounts came only for vote in favor of Xoser, from different wikipedias too. How can you ignore that? And how can you claim that clearly there is no consensus for removal of Xoser's account? And how come that you can ingnore votes of two sysops of Zazaki Wikipedia?

From valid voters, 4 users supported for removal, including 2 admins + 1 other active user + 1 user with about 30 edits at start of the removal request. From valid voters 4 opposed for removal, including a user with 300 edits before start of the removal request, user with about 1000 edits, user with over 900 edits and user with about 700 edits. And the arguments for removal are quite personal, like "we don't need him", "we don't like him". I can't see a consensus there. Stryn (talk) 15:44, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

Are you sure? Now I demonstrate by another way that 4 valid voters opposed removal:

• Neribij's contribution past 2017-2014 same as Xoser.
• Kirmanciye's contribution past 2017-2014 same as Xoser.
• Gomada, rarely active, came from Kurdish Wikipedia to vote oppose.

Is this a joke all these three accounts, Xoser, Kirmanciye and Neribij's contribution's pasts are correspond with each other? Is this a personal argument? You can look at statistics if you wonder.

And what we said, we said that this person (Xoser) was not active for 3 years, his mates (Neribij, Kirmanciye) also was not active during this 3 years. When we started a local discussion they showed up suddenly for vote oppose. Is this a personal argument?

There are a handful of active users in Zazaki Wikipedia, because of this we said a third sysops is needless. Is this personal? You can look at Zazaki Wikipedia's statistics of 10 years.

He swears us, we demonstrated it with evidences. Can you show me the sentence/statement that we said we don't like him?

Welcome to the newsletter for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons! You can update your subscription to the newsletter. Do inform others who you think will want to be involved in the project!

Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons?

The millions of files on Wikimedia Commons are described with a lot of information or (meta)data. With the project Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons, this data is structured more, and is made machine-readable. This will make it easier to view, search (also multilingually), edit, organize and re-use the files on Commons.

In early 2017, the Sloan Foundation funded this project (see documentation). Development takes place in 2017–2020. It involves staff from the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Deutschland (WMDE) and many volunteers. To achieve this, Wikibase support is added to Wikimedia Commons. Wikibase is the technology that is also used for Wikidata.

Recent developments: groundwork

• A new and crucial technical step (federation) now makes it possible to reference data from one Wikibase website in another. Because of this, it will be possible to use Wikidata's items and properties to describe media files on Commons.
• Another important piece of groundwork is under development: so-called Multi-Content Revisions. This feature allows structured data to be stored alongside wiki text, so that one wiki page can contain several types of content.

Team updates

• Amanda Bittaker was hired as Program Manager for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons. Amanda will take care of the overall management of the project.
• Sandra Fauconnier (known as Spinster in her volunteer capacity) is the new Community Liaison. She will support the collaboration between the communities (Commons, Wikidata, GLAM) and the product development teams at the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Deutschland.
• We have open positions for a UX designer and a Product Manager!

Talking with communities and allies

• Long-term feedback from GLAMs. Besides the Wikimedia community, many external cultural and knowledge institutions (GLAMs - Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) are interested in Structured Data on Commons and are willing to provide feedback on the long-term plans for the project. Alex Stinson, GLAM strategist at the Wikimedia Foundation, is currently in contact with Europeana, DPLA, the Smithsonian and the National Archives of the United States. Alex is also looking for other GLAM institutions who might be able to advise on the long term. If you know of an institution or partner that may be appropriate for consultation, do get in touch with Alex.
• Jonathan Morgan, design researcher, is starting to work on two projects:
  • Researching batch upload workflows by interviewing GLAM institutions
  • Researching the enrichment, organization and improvement tasks on already uploaded media files by engaging with active Commons contributors. This research follows up on existing research by Wikimedia Deutschland on heavy Commons users.

What comes next?

• The Structured Data on Commons team meets in the week after Wikimania to lay the groundwork for the next steps. This includes new backend development and design work, for better and more clear integration of the structured data in pages on Wikimedia Commons.
• The project's information pages on Wikimedia Commons will receive a long overdue update in the upcoming months. The team will also work on more and better communication channels. Feedback, wishes and tips are welcome at the project's general talk page.

Just to make you aware

This user's block term will expire on the 18th of November. He has made over 15000 edits to Wikipedia and all the ones I have looked at have been hoax changes. He seems to constantly change dates to fake ones. He was blocked before but came back and did the same again. When this user can edit again, all hell may break loose. • Chart data representing user translation statistics in now showing all the months since user's first published translation. Months that went without translation are now displayed in chart as well.
• A loading indicator is shown while suggestions are loading.
• Button to discard dialog is now shown through the whole process of selecting article to translate.
