The Met Open Access Artworks Challenge is an international initiative from May 15-June 30, 2017 to add Creative Commons Zero images of public domain artworks from the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art to new and existing Wikipedia articles. Please visit the Image and Data Resources page on The Metropolitan Museum of Art website for details about The Met Open Access initiative.
The challenge is part of the WikiProject Metropolitan Museum of Art initiative, and the flagship in-person event will be the first Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon on Sunday May 21.
We will partner with select Wikimedia chapters, groups and wikiprojects to highlight particular geographical and thematic image sets from the collection.
We are also developing and internationalizing a "Museum of Babel" tool to enable a basic Wikipedia article-generator for draft new articles (and translations of articles) on the artworks on different language Wikipedias, using information drawn from Wikidata.
The Challenge will feature a points-based contest for contributions to Wikimedia projects about the relevant Met artworks. Prizes will be awarded in the form of Met art guidebooks and publications.
