MOOC WikipédiaEdit

What is the purpose of the campaign? How will you measure the success of the campaign?Edit

Description - We want to relaunch the Wikipedia MOOC as in previous years in order to make as many people as possible aware of Wikipedia. This time, MOOC can be followed during one year, specially for the teachers and students due to the pandemic crisis.

Metrics - Number of participants

What banner(s) will you use? What will be your landing page?Edit

Banners - * Designs : https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Projet:WikiMOOC/2021/Communication (logo on the left is not the good one, will be another on - just MOOC Wikipédia instead of WikiMOOC). Dont't know why the first one is good and the others are smaller...
  • Since the MOOC is available for a year, we would like the banner to be able to be posted monthly, ideally on Fridays so that learners can sign up over the weekend. If possible, it is better to display the banners randomly (4 designs) and a little bit throughout the year (based on a frequency to be defined for example two Fridays per month) than only once.

Sturm, I see that this request is in the calendar. Can you please add it to the requests page? -- Ата (talk) 10:57, 8 March 2021 (UTC)

Ата I think I was mistaken when entering the information for the request to use the sitenotice banner. The contest itself - Wikiconcurso Casa Brasileira - will actually take place from the 15th of March to the 15th of May, but we need the banner to be displayed before that, as soon as possible in fact, so that people can take be aware, register theselves, etc. So please, I ask you that, if there are no problems, put the banner online as soon as possible (today?). We do not need the banner running during the entire two months of the wikiconcurso, only during the first month. Therefore, we can keep it active from today until April 15th. DiscussionEdit

  • @Anthere:
    • Is the CentralNotice intended to be run at different times in different parts of the continent, or is it intended to run across the whole continent for two months straight? That seems very long for a regular contest.
    • The page on Commons says the contest will be from Feb 15 - Apr 15. Why is the CentralNotice request for between Feb 1 - March 31?
    • (Not directly related to the CentralNotice request, but the page on Commons also mentions direct cash prizes, which IIUC are not permitted. Are those listings supposed to be for vouchers or some such?)
  • Sorry for waiting until so soon before the start to comment. --Yair rand (talk) 07:37, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

Hello Yair.

  • Time set has been move to 15th Feb per populate vote and to accomodate other contests. There are no perfect solutions. But I confirm it starts Feb 15 (I will go fix that date). So we are not yet late in setting up the banner ;)
  • Usually... the site notice administrators choose when it runs, how often and with what pressure depending on the other topics that needs visibility. The most possible, the best. But we will go with what is possible (I have not checked what will coincide, but I know that Wiki Loves Folklore runs in Feb and that there will be Gender-gap related announcements in March. So...
  • What does IIUC means ? Is that a new rule ? I know that the national prizes for WLA are topped. The international prizes have been approved by WMF when they approved the WLA budget. They have not mentionned it should be in-kind. Can you provide any link so that I explore the issue ? Thanks Anthere (talk)
    • @Anthere: IIUC just stands for "If I understand correctly". :) I see that the guidelines for both rapid and project grants say that "Cash prizes for contest or other competition winners" are "Not eligible for funding", contrasting with "Certificates, gift cards, books, photo equipment, etc." as prizes that can be funded. I don't see anything about it in the APG rules, however, and I'm not as sure if there are general rules for it outside of grant restrictions. (I do recall that last time the topic came up on enwiki VP, when there was a miscommunication leading people to think that cash was being given out as prizes in a different contest, some people were pretty upset by the thought. At least one person wanted to ban vouchers as well, IIRC, but nobody made a full proposal for it.) --Yair rand (talk) 21:51, 25 January 2021 (UTC)
      • Ahhhh IIUC... nice. Well, we added a note on the contest page in case after we saw that WLM offered in-kind prizes. We are going to ask WMF for more info though. Thanks Anthere (talk)

Note to CentralNotice admin: Expect for English Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata, we would like the banber to be displayed to all visitors of above listed languages, irrespective of geography. We might have a lot of expats who would want to share their images. But for English Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata, we want to restrict it to the countries specified above. Thanks, KCVelaga (talk) 07:02, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

My judgement was to approve this request. I created

  1. global campaign for Wikipedia+Wiktionary+Wikiquote+Wikivoyage in 28 languages except English
  2. local campaign for Commons+Wikidata+enwiki

with the non-translatable banner, and diet.
I hope I made it right (I don't feel confident as a CN admin yet.) -- Ата (talk) 20:05, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

  • There was a banner for CEE Spring in ukwiki in 2020 and 2019, but this year it's for a shorter period of time, so that's a good change. -- Ата (talk) 09:22, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

Central Notice admin commentsEdit

AntonProtsiuk (WMUA), there is a discrepancy in the request: viewed from the territory of Ukraine or in the Ukrainian language are two different things to ask and I am not sure what an 'or' means here; and this line doesn't correspond with the all projects in all languages from the territory of Ukraine line. Would you please clarify where exactly is WMUA expecting to see the banner? -- Ата (talk) 09:22, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

This seems like a Wikipedia-related campaign: why not opt for the Ukranian Wikipedia site-notice instead? Ciell (talk) 18:45, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
@Ciell: The contest will be also held on two sister wikiprojects (Wikiquote & Wikivoyage), the Wikipedia page will just be the key landing page. In any case, we value the possibility of spreading the word about the project for a broader, yet relevant audience (e.g. Ukrainians reading Russian Wikipedia or anyone reading Ukrainian Wikiquote). Also, while I'm not an expert here, I have an impression that Central Notice is better from a technical perspective as it allows for the banner not to overlap with other Central Notice campaigns active in Ukrainian Wikipedia. --AntonProtsiuk (WMUA) (talk) 20:50, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
@Ата: I guess it means viewed from the territory of Ukraine or in the Ukrainian language *when viewed from outside of Ukraine*. We don't insist on the peculiarities of Central Notice Settings and don't mind changes if necessary. --AntonProtsiuk (WMUA) (talk) 20:50, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
@AntonProtsiuk (WMUA): Don't you just mean "everyone who has their software settings set to Ukranian, all over the world"...? Ciell (talk) 18:04, 29 March 2021 (UTC)

Banner, campaign, set for all projects with uk interface. -- Ата (talk) 10:26, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

@Ата: are you sure about 3 views every 16.800 seconds for 30 days? There are 86.400 seconds in a day, so isn't this a bit too much for a diet? I, from a user point of view, would rather have it on full time and not reappearing once I dismiss it (= no diet at all), then disappearing and returning 5 times per day. Just a thought, I'll leave it up to you. Ciell (talk) 20:10, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
@Ciell my apologies, I missed a third zero there. Ата (talk) 17:34, 31 March 2021 (UTC)

Hi Tofeiku, I created a (basic) banner for you, please check it here and let me know if anything is wrong. You would like to target Tamil and Chinese (only Malaysian Chinese, or standard Chinese as well?), but did not provide translations for the banners in these languages. Please let me know if you would like me to add them for you: if so, please provide the translations. Ciell (talk) 19:34, 3 April 2021 (UTC)

Ciell Everything looks fine. Both Malaysian Chinese and Standard Chinese can be targeted too if possible. Can the banner be in English for those 2 languages? --Tofeiku (talk) 15:41, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
Tofeiku yes, where no translations are provided the CN banner switches to the English language, same as all the other Mediawiki extensions. I enabled the banner for you. You want to target all anonymous users for a period of two months: this is actually not recommended to avoid constant use and banner blindness. I can switch the anons off a week after today, and then do another week say beginning of May, and maybe a final week just before the competition ends, the first week of June? Ciell (talk) 17:38, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
Ciell Alright. That sounds good to me. Thank you! --Tofeiku (talk) 17:50, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
Ciell There are these dates that are important for this competition: 13 April, 13 May, 30 May-2 June. The banners should be put for anonymous users during these dates. --Tofeiku (talk) 19:00, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
Noted! Do you want the anons turned on now, or more closely towards the weekend? Ciell (talk) 20:27, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

  •   Support -- It is an important initiative that will be helping grow content about Morocco, and in Moroccan languages. Having the banner activated will help disseminate the message and will ensure a wider participation. -- Anass Sedrati (talk) 12:21, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

@Reda benkhadra: This banner seems to be targetting two of the same languages as the central campaign, requested by @Michel Bakni:. Please talk to each other and reach agreement about the campaign. We can easily give a different language a (slightly) different text, but having 2 different banners about the same subject targetting all the French projects world wide might lead to confusion for our readers and editors. Maybe it is an option to limit this campaign to Morocco, and have the global one cover the rest of the world for Arabic/French speakers? Ciell (talk) 18:57, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

+1 I think it will be good for the reader involved challenge to focus on the audience that you can directly support geographically -- the broader campaign landing page will have direct invitations for folks to join events. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 23:06, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
Hello @Ciell and Astinson (WMF): from our side, we don't mind having the French and Arabic banners of this present request turned towards the Moroccan audience to avoid any overlap with the global campaign. In this sense, we would like to know how long this request will take before its approval (knowing that the grant has been accepted). Thanks. --Reda benkhadra (talk) 20:43, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
@Reda benkhadra: I can try and find time tomorrow for your request, but I can only design basic banners. For this I need:
  • One or two lines of text (max 50-70 characters)
  • One or two images from Commons
  • A link to your landing page (within a WMF/chapter domain)
Best, Ciell (talk) 21:17, 2 April 2021 (UTC)

Central Notice admin commentsEdit

@Reda benkhadra: I never did one with a gif before, but it seems to work, please check the banner and let me know what you think.
It's not possible to target incubator, sorry about that. I did include the targetting for the shi language (besides fr/ar/ary), since you asked for translations in that language as well. Feel free to improve the text yourself through the translations-link that leads to Translatewiki. Is it really needed to target anonymous users for a writing campaign for the whole two months? Ciell (talk) 19:05, 3 April 2021 (UTC)

Thanks @Ciell: I think this banner will do the job. However, would it be possible to include the clickbale button? (similarly to this one)
As of the Incubator, apparently according to @Amire80: it is technically possible to add the banner in the Incubator, and make it turned to the Moroccan audience. --Reda benkhadra (talk) 22:47, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
@Reda benkhadra: In this CN banner the full banner text is clickable. Could this proposed text change be a solution? CN banners are designed in HTML, not in wikicode. Ciell (talk) 09:06, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
Just let me know when to enable the banner, if everything is good to go. Ciell (talk) 17:41, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

We wanted to target Wikipedia only, but Commons could be a good addition. Wikipedia only is just fine. alhen Did you call? 14:22, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
"Target" means "to show": would you like the banner to be visible for people visiting Wikimedia Commons from Bolivia? (Asking because you did inform the Wikimedia Commons community - but if this is just because you wanted to 'inform' them that pictures will be added, this is off course also fine with me.) Ciell (talk) 15:00, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

@Michel Bakni: have the English, Arabian, French, Spanish and Chinese communities been informed about and do they approve of the campaign? Ciell (talk) 18:49, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

Hi Ciell -- for editor only campaigns do you need prior approval? I thought the prerequisite was clear landing page and actions for participants (i.e. Wiki Loves Monuments, WikiGap etc)? Astinson (WMF) (talk) 23:09, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

@Astinson (WMF):} It is not so much *needed*, but still *advised*, especially with larger communities where not all the users might be in the (WMF) loop. I have never seen the distinguish difference between editor/non-editor campaigns for this, and because this could be seen as a kind of activist campaign (same as the SDG, or even Gendergap related banners), it's good to give communities a chance for feedback and input and have their approval. Ciell (talk) 16:17, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
  • @Michel Bakni and Astinson (WMF): Is the plan to delay this campaign? There isn't enough time remaining before April 8 to notify the relevant communities and still give seven days for the required comment period. --Yair rand (talk) 07:01, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
    • No there is not such plan, I will notify the communities today.--Michel Bakni (talk) 07:13, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
      • We may tweak the language, since it may not be appropriate to have the launch event listed (we will instead include links to events on the landing page). Astinson (WMF) (talk) 13:50, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
      • @Michel Bakni: This really does not qualify as notification of the Meta-Wiki discussion on the CentralNotice proposal, given that it doesn't even mention or link to this discussion.
I don't think this banner can run at this point. --Yair rand (talk) 19:28, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
      • @Yair rand: What do you suggest?--Michel Bakni (talk) 19:37, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
        • @Michel Bakni: I suggest figuring out the details of how the banner would work (where the specific links would go, a workable schedule, etc), then inviting the target wikis to participate on this page in discussing whether the banner should run (The invitation doesn't need to be anything fancy, just post something like "There's a proposal to run a CentralNotice banner for a #WikiForHumanRights writing challenge on "Right to a healthy environment" which would run from xx to xx. Please discuss at [link].", maybe with a thumbnail screenshot of how the banner would look if you feel like it.), and then seven days later starting the campaign (assuming the discussion goes in that direction; banners should "be consensus-driven"). --Yair rand (talk) 19:51, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
      • @Yair rand: Done, please tell me if there us any other things to do.--Michel Bakni (talk) 19:25, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
  • Hi! I was wondering if this banner is going to get approved? We're running our event in Spanish starting next week, and since @Michel Bakni: was asking for the banner to all the events that are under the campaign, I thought it was unnecessary to ask for yet another banner if the campaign is asking for one already. But seeing that this might not come through and that we're running out of time, I want to know if we should ask one separately for the Spanish event. thanks! Scann (talk) 13:09, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

Central Notice admin commentsEdit

@Michel Bakni: Hi, quick note on the image File:1080 WikiHumanRights2 2x.png, this imho will not be suitable for the banner. Images are displayed at ~65x65px (quite small), so maybe chose one of the symbols you think is most symbolic for the campaign. Ciell (talk) 10:14, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

@Ciell: you can use the eagle. :).--Michel Bakni (talk) 13:04, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

ah! What a miss :D ! please use the thunderbird.--Michel Bakni (talk) 19:49, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

@Ciell:No one responded negatively to the notifications -- and as Scann above points multiple of the community groups are dependent on the central banner. Do we need to do anything else to circulate it? I would hope it runs for at least earth day? Astinson (WMF) (talk) 23:51, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

Astinson (WMF) Hi, yes, let's move this forward. Michel Bakni requested this campaign to end on the 18th, but Earth Day this year is on the 22nd, correct? You want me to extend the campaign till Saturday next week? Ciell (talk) 08:43, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

Do you just need the translations in text here? What format? And yes lets extend that through next Saturday for sure. @Scann: can you provide Spanish? Astinson (WMF) (talk) 13:24, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
Just the one sentence: you can give it to me here. (I could use Google translate off course, but native speakers is always best). What do you think of the banner, can I enable it when you're done with the translations? Ciell (talk) 13:33, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
Hey Ciell, I just talked to our Chinese translator - -we are going to hold off on sharing on Chinese Wikipedia for right now-- can we also exclude mainland China from the banner, Astinson (WMF) (talk) 14:06, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
Excluded zh language and China for targetting. Ciell (talk) 15:08, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi Scann, that is strange, the es-wp should receive the banner. Could you maybe check for me if all boxes are checked in your preferences? Ciell (talk) 14:12, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
Hi Ciell I do have them all checked! Sophivorus & Cbrescia are you seeing the banner in Spanish? I don't see it. --Scann (talk) 14:17, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
