Hello @DerHexer: Und täglich grüßt das Murmeltier. No, monthly. Please once more. Could it be that last month the category "Frauen" was not added? I never saw the banner and the landing page was hardly called. Best wishes, --Leserättin (talk) 08:51, 20 November 2022 (UTC)

  • @Leserättin: campaign, banner and preview. Category:Frau was enabled last time but maybe something was wrong with the May banner. I used the September version and created a new array with the requested categories. I hope that it will do; otherwise please ping me. And also please confirm now so that I can enable it. • I can take care of this and created some stuff but must take an immediate break. Links will follow. —DerHexer (Talk) 12:15, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
@Nivas10798: I've created the campaign and banner. Please check the preview. I have enabled translations for the banner text. Usually, we only display banners in those languages where the landingpage is translated into, and where banner texts are available. Therefore, please enable the translate extension on WikiConference India 2023, too, and help with translations in the banner. Once you approve the campaign, I will enable it. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 13:15, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
@DerHexer: Is it possible to modify the content in Line 1 to "Program and Scholarship submissions for WikiConference India, 2023 are LIVE! Apply now to be a part of WikiConference India, 2023." There are no changes in Line 2 content. Once the change is done, consider this message as approval from my side to launch the campaign banner created. Thank you for helping out with a super quick response! Best, —Nivas10798 (talk) 13:24, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
@Nivas10798: Done, please help with updating the translations. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 14:31, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
@DerHexer: Sure, I am working on the translations. I would like to notify you that I have added two more countries which are Bhutan (BT) and Maldives (MV) to calendar. Please let me know once the banner goes live. It was really great communicating with you. Thank you! Best, —Nivas10798 (talk) 13:23, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

DiscussionEdit

Hi @Rhododendrites, Legoktm, and Firefly:!

Is there photo credit in the top right of the banner really necessary? The image apparently is a winner from 15 years ago, and it's is a strange way to credit: nowadays, we would just add the photographers name, right? In CentralNotice banners normally there is no credit for the image the banner uses, but ìf we do this, we imho should do it correct to set the right example. Ciell (talk) 09:40, 14 November 2022 (UTC)

Central Notice admin commentsEdit

  • I can take care of this. —DerHexer (Talk) 17:52, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
@Rhododendrites, Legoktm, and Firefly: Please check the campaign, banner and preview. As soon as you approve it, I can enable the campaign. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 18:02, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
@DerHexer: the timing of the banner and preview looks good to me! I assume the banner diet is the same as last year, so that should be fine. Legoktm (talk) 19:08, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
@DerHexer: Banner looks good to me. I don't know what the diet was last year, so can't really comment, but whatever you think makes sense is good! Thanks for taking care of this. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 23:16, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
Okay, I enabled it. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 23:58, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
Awesome, thank you! Legoktm (talk) 01:46, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, DerHexer. Do you foresee problems with round 2 scheduled around the same time as the sound logo voting? — Rhododendrites talk \\ 03:05, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
Well, you should definitely raise this topic on CentralNotice/Request/Wikimedia Sound Logo contest 2. I'm sure that we will find a good solution for both campaigns. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 08:33, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
@Rhododendrites, Legoktm, Firefly, and DerHexer: for this or future years we might want to consider creating a new round 1 banner based on this or this that I created in 2020 but never switched over to. Seddon (talk) 01:44, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
    @Seddon sounds good to me! firefly ( t · c ) 07:57, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
Sure. I enable what fits best to the organizers. If they want to have it changed this year, I can try my best to do that now. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 15:38, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
@DerHexer: hi, I just want to make sure we're all set for the Round 2 banner, which is from 1 December 2022 → 15 December 2022 (some overlapping with the Sound Logo banner, which we'll share 50/50, as discussed on that request). Legoktm (talk) 16:35, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
@Legoktm: Well, actually, no. ;D But now the campaign and banner are created. Please check that and the preview. Once you've approved it, I can enable the campaign. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 17:11, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
@DerHexer: Good thing I pinged then. It looks good to me, thank you! Legoktm (talk) 02:18, 30 November 2022 (UTC)
Done. —DerHexer (Talk) 07:32, 30 November 2022 (UTC)
Hi, we just got the Vector 2022 skin on nlwp last week, and the banner and dropdown menu in the top are crossing each other with text from the banner coming through the drop down, see File:POTD banner nlwiki Vector 2022 issue 2022-12-01.png. This only happens with the current banner, not with the one for round 1. Ciell (talk) 11:20, 1 December 2022 (UTC)
@DerHexer: my Dutch wiki-colleague is saying this is because of the z-index: "Het ligt zo te zien aan de z-index in de CSS. Die van de vertaaltekst is veel te hoog (98).". Ciell (talk) 20:08, 5 December 2022 (UTC)

I have notified the community of Ukrainian Wikipedia, the largest Wikimedia project to be affected. See also the previous year's request – we're requesting the same parameters. --AntonProtsiuk (WMUA) (talk) 10:29, 11 November 2022 (UTC)

Central Notice admin commentsEdit

  • @AntonProtsiuk (WMUA): I've created campaign and banner. The request with “Ukrainian (from all countries)” and “Ukraine (all projects in all languages from the territory of Ukraine)” didn't make much sense to me: Since the landing page is in Ukrainian and people from all over the world are invited, I used these settings instead of all languages and a limitation on Ukraine as only country. When you approve the preview, please ping me so that I can enable the campaign. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 00:18, 25 November 2022 (UTC)

Hi everyone! @Martin Urbanec: @DerHexer: @Romaine: @Steinsplitter:, can you help me with this request?, thank you in advance :-) --Carla Toro (WMCL) (talk) 13:52, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

Central Notice admin commentsEdit

  • @Cftoro (WMCL): I've created the campaign and banner. For the latter I have used your twitter version of the logo because this fits better to the landscape format of the banner. Furthermore, I have used the main colour of that logo for the background. I hope you like the changes and will approve the preview so that I can enable the campaign. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 20:26, 21 November 2022 (UTC)
Wow! Thank you so much @DerHexer!! I honestly tried to do something like you did with the banner and I failed jaja so I really appreciate what you did. It's perfect :-) Carla Toro (WMCL) (talk) 20:45, 22 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the kind feedback. I've enabled the campaign. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 21:15, 22 November 2022 (UTC)
Hi @DerHexer! Sorry to bother you, but I wanted to ask if the campaign is enabled because we are not seeing the banner :-(. Best, Carla Toro (WMCL) (talk) 18:03, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
@Cftoro (WMCL): Should be fixed now. Check in some minutes and please let me know if it doesn't work. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 18:27, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

@AntonProtsiuk (WMUA): I hope you're alright … I've created campaign, banner (including the display for users with 50+ edits; please tell me if you want to have that changed, we CN admins usually don't use it to reduce banner blindness — bringing the logo to the requested place would have taken way more time, I hope that works for you nonetheless) and preview. Central Notice admin commentsEdit

  • I can take care of this after 6 November. —DerHexer (Talk) 22:15, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, DerHexer! Because of delays in vetting the finalists (we had more submissions to go through than expected!), we pushed back the voting start date by a week. I've updated the request to reflect the resulting shorter voting period. Also, while we're still requesting a cookie reset in the middle, that's now a reset at one week in. If you think that's too many banners, we are open to changes! Ed WMF [talk] 18:25, 8 November 2022 (UTC)
@Ed Erhart (WMF): I've created a new campaign and banner (no clones because otherwise translations would have been copied as well; while you are looking for new translations in non-supported languages). Please check this (the VOTE NOW looks a bit odd, imo) and provide the link to the landing page in time. May I ask why only these projects are invited to vote for the logo? I think that everybody is interested in that phase (different from the previous one, maybe). Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 18:46, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
Hello DerHexer, and apologies for my delay while I've been dealing with an illness. (I also initially missed these when they were posted, so I've updated my preferences to email me whenever I'm mentioned.)
Thanks so much for this work. The button looks like it reads "vote today" now, and I can run its appearance past our team. That said, I think we'd also welcome any guidance you'd have for improving it. I'm pushing for the landing page link and will get it possibly as soon as today, or more likely shortly after this week's US holidays.
On projects, I copied them from the previous request but you're very right to point out that more people would be interested. We would be happy to open it up to all Wikimedia content projects + Meta-Wiki. Ed WMF [talk] 18:17, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
Here's where the landing page will be! Ed WMF [talk] 19:36, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
    @Ed Erhart (WMF): Some remarks:
For me, it still reads as “VOTE NOW”. Where do you see “Vote today”? Or do you want me to change it to that text? Textual decisions are yours, I don't have much opinion about that.
I think that it's not necessary to make all projects aware of that. It's a global campaign and would be approved for all projects (by me =) ).
You mislinked https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Sound_Logo_Vote ;D. In the banner, I have changed the general link to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Sound_Logo_Vote and added direct links to the initially supported languages. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 10:09, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
@DerHexer: To your first question, I'm seeing "vote today" at Special:CentralNoticeBanners/edit/soundlogo_phase2_reg. Is that not being reflected somewhere else?
    That solution sounds great!
Ach, yes. Been a long time since I made a typo like that. :-) Adding Special:MyLanguage is perfect—thank you for that tweak! Ed WMF [talk] 07:18, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
I can see “VOTE TODAY” now. Everything ready then? Including the translations, Mehrdad has mentioned below? Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 13:25, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
Hi @DerHexer, I just entered the translations. Please check from your end. We have been discussing to decrease the number of times the banner is shown to only once to not bombard people, especially during this key period with fundraising banners and POTY. What do you think? We can then use other means like email lists and social media to remind people to vote. What are your thoughts? MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 19:28, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
@MPourzaki (WMF): I've marked the translations as published. That should do then. I also think that one reminder won't hurt much. 2 impressions per cycle would be fine with me. Good luck with the voting! Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 19:57, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
Two impressions works great! Thanks, DerHexer, for all your help here, before, and elsewhere. :-) One last request along the line of thought raised by Mehrdad... can you change the banner start date to 8 Dec? As he said, we're worried about bombarding people and this would give some space between all those messages on social media etc. Ed WMF [talk] 16:04, 30 November 2022 (UTC)
Done; end date also moved by 2 days. Less overlap with my staff campaign on CentralNotice/Request/WMDE promoting volunteer support 2022 either. ;D Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 16:45, 30 November 2022 (UTC)
Ah, so sorry DerHexer but voting will close on 19 Dec. Getting a banner after that would be very confusing. :-) Can you change the end date back? Or, maybe even better(!), could you set it to 23:59 18 December so no one gets a banner at the literal last minute? Ed WMF [talk] 18:09, 30 November 2022 (UTC)
That makes sense, done. —DerHexer (Talk) 18:12, 30 November 2022 (UTC)
Hi @DerHexer, a final FINAL change from our end, grateful for all your flexibility and support. Considering the en.WP RfC discussions and sentiments, we didn't want to be insensitive and will reduce the scope of the banners to only Meta-wiki and Commons. Would you be able to make that change? MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 21:21, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
This makes no sense to me. It's a project important for each and every Wikimedia wiki. For English Wikipedia especially. Please reconsider. I will change it once you re-confirm. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 21:27, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
The sensitivity we are conscious of is just about the banners and we definitely don't want to take away from the significance of this project to all communities. We now have a bigger job of reaching more people in the next two weeks by other means. We'll try to reach as many people as we can via messages on village pumps, outreach on social media, Telegram, Discord, and other community channels, a corresponding Diff post and reminder, and notices on email lists. It's the best we could think of given the circumstances. We see Meta as of course our central wiki space and Commons because of this project's relevance. We can also see how thing are going after week 1 and reassess. We thought to start light and non-intrusive. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 15:12, 3 December 2022 (UTC)

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
[not a CN admin] Were there specific requests about not displaying this banner? My impression is the objections on enwp were specifically to fundraising banners, not to the idea of banners. I dare say there's just as much risk in upsetting people by only running these on Meta/Commons (a different long-term gripe about too many important things happening on venues most Wikipedians don't visit). Probably worth just asking (assuming this conversation hasn't already taken place), even if it's a tight turnaround time. i.e. "We're about to run banners for the sound logo contest. Before we do, I want to make sure there aren't objections to that kind of banner being displayed. We're prepared to run it only on Meta and Commons if so." Food for thought, anyway. :) — Rhododendrites talk \\ 15:02, 4 December 2022 (UTC)

  • Please also have a look at CentralNotice/Request/Picture of the Year 2021. —DerHexer (Talk) 08:34, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
Per what DerHexer wrote there, opening this here. Courtesy ping to Ed Erhart (WMF). In short, POTY is being run quite late in the year, and doesn't have much flexibility for scheduling. Round 2 is tentatively planned to overlap with this notice. I don't have enough experience with centralnotices to know the technical/stylistic implications. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 18:32, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
Hey Rhododendrites, apologies for my delay, the reasons for which are above.
We are happy to compromise with POTY—being an editor myself, I'm well aware of how important that is! Could we split the impressions 50/50? Or we could run these at a lower priority so that editors will see POTY first and sound logo later (assuming I'm correctly understanding how priority works). Ed WMF [talk] 18:17, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
That all sounds reasonable to me. Thanks, Ed. Courtesy ping to Legoktm, who's taken the lead on running this year's POTY. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 18:25, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
Fabulous, thank you very much! Ed WMF [talk] 19:38, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
The later has technical challenges: It depends on the diet of the one campaign if it ends and allows a second campaign. I'm not sure about cookie resets here, etc. (Nobody seems to know how it really works technically …). I strongly recommend a 50:50 or similar percentages. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 10:09, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
Gotcha, thanks DerHexer. Let's do 50:50 then. Ed WMF [talk] 07:18, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
  • Hey DerHexer, whenever you've had the chance to prepare the banners, let me know to upload the translations. Ciell had pointed out the translation glitch, which means in the end you may have to approve them? Did I understand that correctly? MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 23:10, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
@MPourzaki (WMF): See the conversations above: The banner is prepared and some questions open for Ed. Translation administrators maybe have to mark the translations as published what we can easily do. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 23:16, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
Hey, thanks for your thoughts @Rhododendrites. Any suggestion where we could pose this question to the en.WP community? It's not too late. We could always run the first few days on Commons and Meta-Wiki, then for the second and last week, do a once around wider reach on all projects. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 23:14, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
I'd imagine one of the village pumps. Probably the WMF Village Pump. I can open that thread if you prefer -- up to you. I'd just be casually bringing it up; effectively "hey there's some hesitation about running any banners following the recent rfc. WMF offered to only run the Sound Logo banners on Meta and Commons if there are objections to them, but my impression is most here would want Wikipedia users to know about that. Should the banners proceed as planned?" or something along those lines. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 23:19, 5 December 2022 (UTC)

@DerHexer, Ciell, Jeremyb, Martin Urbanec, Romaine, Steinsplitter, and Ата:, I have not seen the banner on any of the wikis for the entire day today. Can any one of you please check what is going on? We are not getting any participation at all since last 5 days. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 19:00, 4 November 2022 (UTC)
The banner has a diet to show 3 consecutive times every 7 days to registered users per project, desktop only. Ciell (talk) 19:52, 4 November 2022 (UTC)
Indeed, and that's a very normal diet for anonymous banners. For logged-in we go up to 5 displays per week. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 20:09, 4 November 2022 (UTC)
@DerHexer and Ciell:, thanks for the reply. Isn't 5 displays per week for logged-in users too low for a competition to attract participants? Can it not be increased at least on Wikimedia Commons where the event is happening? Wikis of Indian languages are also not having any other banner right now. Can this banner not be given more space there too? At this current frequency of display, the participation is so low that we are already thinking of cancelling the event midway, which would be very unfortunate for us. It would be really helpful to optimize the display. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 03:52, 5 November 2022 (UTC)
@Bodhisattwa: I've increased it to 10 displays per week but strongly doubt that this will change much. Please keep us updated. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 16:32, 7 November 2022 (UTC)

Olá, deixo aqui registrado a comunicação do pedido de divulgação na Esplanada e na página de discussão do Wiki Movimento Brasil.--Danielly Figueredo (talk) 17:40, 11 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi everyone @DerHexer:, @Martin Urbanec:, @Romaine: and @Steinsplitter:! Could anyone give us feedback on the banner? The requested period is approaching, and if we could have the banner in the wiki projects we would certainly achieve our goals with the event. • @Manfred Werner (WMAT): I've created the campaign and banner, please check the English and German preview (I've translated the latter). Usually, we only enable campaigns only when the landing page is also translated into the banner source languages. To date, the landing page seems to be available only in English. If possible, please also provide a German translation. We also recommend to announce banner campaigns to the local communities; in that case, d:Wikidata:Forum would have been a good place. Due to the short timeframe, I would enable the campaign when you confirm the settings and preview. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 21:59, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
@DerHexer: Thank you! The banner is fine as it is. A German version will not be prepared in this case, not least because working with Wikidata requires a minimum of knowledge of the English language anyway. But I will keep in it mind, it would certainly be a good service for a big part the targeted community - and I will also remember notifying the local community/communities next time. Thank you, Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 10:34, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
Alright, enabled. —DerHexer (Talk) 10:36, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
Thanks @DerHexer:! I am based in Austria and checked both Wikidata and de.wp, both logged in (interface set to English) and not logged, and I don’t see the banner. Am I doing something wrong here? Jean-Fred (talk) 22:10, 6 October 2022 (UTC)

Hello @EPorto (WMB):, I submitted a banner request for Wikidata's 10th birthday to run during the whole month of October. I think we can share the display between both of our campaigns, would that be OK for you? Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 06:11, 19 September 2022 (UTC)

Hello, @Lea Lacroix (WMDE)! Yes, no problem. I would only ask to keep the first week (5-12) without overlap, just so we can get momentum at the start of the contest, is that a possibility? Cheers, EPorto (WMB) (talk) 16:43, 19 September 2022 (UTC)

Copied banner to the central notice admin interface: preview (edit form for admins). --Martin Urbanec (talk) 15:26, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

Prepared campaign. I excluded Wikidata/Commons from it, as there is no pt version of those projects (we'd need to target geographically for those two projects I think). --Martin Urbanec (talk) 15:26, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

@Martin Urbanec: Looks good enough to me. My concern at this point is the start deadline, already passed. Would you activate it, please? ALeoncio (WMB) (talk) 17:14, 6 October 2022 (UTC)
Hello, @Martin Urbanec! I'm also one of the campaign organizers and we are concerned that the banner isn't running yet because we usually have a lot of people signing up for the contest coming through it, which is not happening at the moment. The contest started last week and it would be of a great help if you could check it, especially because this is a collective effort from different initiatives in the Lusophone community in order to approach topics of impact. Thank you! EAzzellini (WMB) (talk) 13:12, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
Sorry for the late reply,   Done! Martin Urbanec (talk) 15:01, 10 October 2022 (UTC)

┌─────────┘
@Martin Urbanec: Hi! Can I request some changes to the campaign? We found some issues that would be good to fix. I will list below:

  • Include the pt-br language.
  • Create a new version of the current banner. In the new version, where it says "prêmios de até R$ 2.500", replace it with "prêmios de até € 500".
  • Divide geographically, with the current banner being applied only to Brazil and the new banner in Portugal and the PALOPs: Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Principe and Equatorial Guinea.

I apologize in advance for the extra work. Regards, ALeoncio (WMB) (talk) 14:33, 13 October 2022 (UTC)

@ALeoncio (WMB) Thanks for the message. Just to double check, do you want me to make a separate campaign, for pt-br, with a slightly different banner? Or do I misunderstand you? Martin Urbanec (talk) 15:34, 13 October 2022 (UTC)
@Martin Urbanec: Almost that. Keep the current campaign/banner, but make it limited to Brazil and create another campaign, with this small change in the banner, for the other countries. ALeoncio (WMB) (talk) 17:25, 13 October 2022 (UTC)
Okay, sounds good. On it! Martin Urbanec (talk) 21:39, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
Done @ALeoncio (WMB). Please let me know if you need any other changes! Martin Urbanec (talk) 21:46, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
@Martin Urbanec: Great! However I noticed that Portugal was missing from the list. ALeoncio (WMB) (talk) 22:39, 14 October 2022 (UTC)

DiscussionEdit

Hello,

Please could you take a look at our banner request and confirm if the content is correct? We would appreciate your support with publishing it next week. It was actually suppose to be publish by this week (12th August) but I guess we are running late and sorry about that. @Ciell:, @DerHexer:, @Romaine:, @Steinsplitter:, @Martin Urbanec: Thanks, Ptinphusmia (talk) 17:08, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi @Ptinphusmia, please fill in the missing information for the targetting in the template: which project(s) and what language(s). I see on your meta page you have a limited number of countries participating: I'd like to propose to target them specifically, and not all countries in the world if that's okay. For the banner the logo is perfectly fine: can you also give me one or maybe two line of text with max. 50-70 characters? Ciell (talk) 02:50, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you @Ciell for your response. I have responded to all your questions in the template. Please let me know if there's anything I missed or any additional information you would love to have. Ptinphusmia (talk) 19:03, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi @Ptinphusmia, I'd love to create the campaign for you, but a few more questions:
  • I read on the landing page that the International Youth Day was on August 12, so last week? Is it over now?
  • If yes: I notice that in the banner text you want to invite people to join in the International Youth Month. Maybe you have a more specific page that we can link to from the banner? With every step people have to do to get to the information you want them to read, you will lose engagement, so it is best to be as specific as possible.
  • Some of the countries you would like the banner to be active in are also running a Wiki Loves Monuments banner - you can reach out to the organizers of the national Wiki Loves Monuments campaign (list of names and contacts is here on Commons), and see if you both can find some consensus for the banner space. We cannot show two banners at once, but we can implement a diet that allows for alternating banners for instance. Ciell (talk) 18:48, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi @Ciell! Thanks for reaching out. Apologies for the late response. The campaign is not over yet even though the meta page stated 12th August. Most communities will be running their local events starting this week into probably September due to delay in grant approval. This was put into consideration in making it a month-long event. But this came after we had created the meta page you saw. Prior to now, there have been other events in preparation for the local events. The landing page you saw is the page in use. This said, please know that I'm open to suggestions on how best we can move forward. Ptinphusmia (talk) 20:10, 28 August 2022 (UTC)

DiscussionEdit

So... the details would have to be discussed with CentralNotice admin depending on what other banners are running at that time. The general idea is the following...

  • The project is meant to get people to participate to the effort around Mid-October / Mid December (this is not a contest, there is no hard set beginning and ending dates)
  • This is at the same time a content production drive and an awareness of the existence of Wikiquote. So we would like to run a banner which will be visible on Wikiquote (for wikiquote regularly active participants), but also on Wikipedia (to bring attention on the campaign)
  • This suggest a banner which will not be a high-frequency/full two-month duration, but rather a peak at the beginning (around early October), followed by a more discreet banner or some reminders during the rest of the campaign. I am aware of banner fatigue and that several banners are always running at the same time and do not want to impose.
  • The initial peak would ideally be made on all languages Wikipedia/Wikiquote to bring attention to the largest and foster the creation of a local effort. However, each community organize itself around local portals (about 10 languages participated the two previous years), so it feels that the lower frequency of banners in the second part of the calendar could probably focus only on languages in which there is a dedicated effort.
  • To be discussed...

I see the landing page is 0% translated 2 langs and 100% en, fr, ko, nl. Should some languages wait for the landing page to develop? which ones? @Islahaddow: --Jeremyb (talk) 23:20, 3 October 2022 (UTC)

Good question - SheSaid is also active on Italian, Ukrainian, Spanish, Serbian, Catalan, Igbo, Central Bikol (incubator) and Tagalog (incubator) ... we are hoping that more language communities will join this year. So the more it can be made available in, the better. Not sure how we do this though? Islahaddow (talk) 13:09, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
can you recruit translators for both the banner and landing page for those languages? is there a SheSaid mailing list? or at least there's a talk page. there's also a translators mailing list. --Jeremyb (talk) 16:13, 4 October 2022 (UTC)

translations can be started. go to message group statistics, click any language and then in upper right corner can choose a different language. --Jeremyb (talk) 04:08, 4 October 2022 (UTC)

the logo on commons needs to be protected. (and the words on the bottom of the image are barely visible but I guess that's not critical for now) --Jeremyb (talk) 04:08, 4 October 2022 (UTC)

I have tried to upload a new one with the words taken off and the SheSaid larger, but the protection was in place. Am on the case, you should have a new, clean logo by the time you wake up ;) Islahaddow (talk) 13:11, 4 October 2022 (UTC)

If banner is ready before I'm back on tomorrow then feel free to make one. (leave a note here first so we're on the same page) --Jeremyb (talk) 04:08, 4 October 2022 (UTC)

Ummm ... sorry @Jeremyb - apparently I don't have the authority to view this? Can you help? Islahaddow (talk) 13:13, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
pointed you to the "Preview last saved version" link at the top of the page (tiny text) out of band. but for anyone else reading that's how you can preview without rights or even an account. (look on various devices, screen/window size, mobile domain and desktop, logged in and logged out) --Jeremyb (talk) 16:13, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
(Direct link to the banner preview.) Ciell (talk) 15:31, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

some questions I had for user:Seddon (but others could answer too):

  • I linked from banner to Special:MyLanguage. is this right? how do you usually do this?
  • what is div.cnotice-misc-container usually used for? am I abusing it?
  • I see the scary warnings about RTL and LTR. what if some translations are one way and some are the other way? how do we abstract that out? what about directional text that's not getting translated like a hashtag? does that then get wrapped in an extra layer of dir="ltr" inside a bigger div that's sometimes one direction and sometimes another?
  • at the top it says "This banners is set up to run to loggedin users only". what does that mean? obviously I see the checkbox but is there something about the banner source that's specific to loggedin? --Jeremyb (talk) 04:08, 4 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi Jeremy, Seddon is now in a different department, so let me try to help and answer:

  • There are different ways to do this, and yours is fine (tested just now).
  • cannot help you with the second bullit - the template is designed and tested to work on all devices, so I never remove anything that is not in the way.
  • RTL/LTR leave it as is (I know the text says differently) and it should work - have not heard of problems with that until now.
  • I did not design the banner template, but think this is because of the testing again, as well to make CN admins aware that we want to (severely) limit the number of banners we show to anonymous users to keep the fundraiser banners as effective as possible, so you really need to weigh what kind of banners to show to people without accounts. People will react less to a banner if there is a banner up for 183 weeks of the year already. Ciell (talk) 15:31, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi @Islahaddow & @Anthere,
I have now set up the campaign, banner preview is here. It will run for the by Isla mentioned languages above, plus English and French. Should I also include Korean? If more languages join, just let me know and I will add them to the targeted languages.
If the proposed banner works okay for you now (I understood there were some problems for mobile view with the previous version), I propose to enable it on Thursday and let it run till Sunday (so 4 days) - after that we can set it up with a lean diet, as Anthere suggests. I would not want to run this banner for not-logged in visitors, but for logged-in only.
Please let me know if I can enable it! Ciell (talk) 19:29, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
Dear @Ciell - thank you to you and @Jeremyb for all the help! It really is eye opening into what can be used in a banner and what cannot be. Please can we proceed with this version. Please let's proceed as you suggest - from Thursday to Sunday for 4 days to Logged-in users only. Thank you!! Islahaddow (talk) 08:14, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
@Islahaddow: great! Would you like me to include Korean as well? Ciell (talk) 08:35, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
Yes please @Ciell Islahaddow (talk) 11:19, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
Great, thanks! I have enabled the banner, starting tomorrow. Ciell (talk) 17:04, 12 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi @MichellevL (WMNL):, here is a banner preview. Please tell me if it looks good to you. Ciell (talk) 06:43, 7 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi @Ciellthanks for following up on this, the link doesn't show the banner, can you resend it? Thank you so much for your help! MichellevL (WMNL) (talk) 08:19, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
(Send you a screenshot via mail and yay, you were happy.)
@MichellevL (WMNL) One last question though: you are requesting to target the Dutch Caribbean and, according to the calendar, also Suriname. The landing page however only mentions a physical address in Utrecht: is there a hybrid option for interested people that live further away? Ciell (talk) 18:35, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
@Ciell Excellent question! There is, we have a global track people can also participate in online. Maybe we could leave out Utrecht in the banner text all together? MichellevL (WMNL) (talk) 06:43, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
@Ciell also I noticed in the second line it says WikiconNL, when it should be WikiConNL. I will adjust in the banner text! MichellevL (WMNL) (talk) 06:45, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
@Ciell okay, please ignore my previous comment; its WikiconNL. I adjusted it in the banner text so it is now correct. Sorry for confusing you! MichellevL (WMNL) (talk) 06:49, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
No problem. And we could leave out mentioning Utrecht, but I would like to also suggest to add some (initial) information about online attendance to the WMNL landing page. Ciell (talk) 06:52, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
@MichellevL (WMNL): friendly nudge. I can turn it on for NL & BE already if you'd like. Ciell (talk) 07:29, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
@Ciell thanks for nudging, yes please turn it on. @ThamaraGroenleer checked with you to see if the WLF banner is not interfering with the WikiconNL banner, I hope it isn't. Should you see reason for concern please let me know. And I will add the information about online participation to our landingpage a.s.a.p. Thanks again for all your work! MichellevL (WMNL) (talk) 09:47, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
Thanks Michelle! Banner is enabled and will start tonight, 19.30 CEST. Logged in will run without diet, anonymous do have a diet and will see the banner a limited number of times. Ciell (talk) 17:39, 12 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi @Mx Lucy, I have gone ahead and designed the second banner for your request. Please see the preview and tell me what you think. I have added English and German to the targetting languages (though keot geotargetting to Netherlands only). Since the workshop is in English I have translated the banner to an English text, but did notice there is no information in English available on the landing page yet. Just let me know what you prefer. Ciell (talk) 07:56, 8 October 2022 (UTC)

Thank you, Ciell for the banner. Could you leave 'this wednesday' out? So it reads 'Join us to write about fashion, fashion designers, innovation and sustainability! Sign up now for a Wikipedia workshop at the Museumfabriek in Enschede on Oct. 26.'
The landingpage will be this ( https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikiproject/Fashion/DMF ), I added some english there. Mx Lucy (talk) 20:16, 12 October 2022 (UTC)

DiscussionEdit

  • @Ed Erhart (WMF): Thanks for the mock-ups. Do you think it makes sense to have the close button and translate section included in the mock-up? Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 21:20, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
  • Hi @DerHexer: we'll have a close button in the final banner. For translations, we're doing Arabic, Bahasa, English, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish, and we'll match the banner language with the translated landing page and other content. We have thought about leaving the translation open for other contributions, but are also concerned that someone will see the banner in their language, but will be disappointed that the landing page isn't. What's your recommendation? Based on last week's conversation, I just updated the banner diet – 100%, with decreased frequency for logged in and out users. What do you think? Finally, we'll reach out to User:Romaine to coordinate our banner diet with WLM's. Anything we are missing? MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 19:12, 1 August 2022 (UTC)
@MPourzaki (WMF): It's pretty common practice to have banner texts translated but only a reduced number of languages of the landing page. Translators could decide to include that into their translations (“English landing page”) or could help with localization of the landing page (which should generally be translatable beyond the languages you provide). Can you add links to the campaign and banner(s) here as well so that it's easier to find them? Thanks in advance! Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 10:36, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
@DerHexer: Sounds good to us! The Meta landing page is linked above, and we're still working to code the banners. Ed WMF [talk] 23:30, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
@DerHexer:, updating the campaign launch time to 10:00 UTC on Tuesday, Sep 13. Thank you. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 18:53, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
@MPourzaki (WMF): What do you mean with “Impressions limiting: 100%, Frequency cap: 3 for logged in, 2 for logged out, Reset after click”? I'm not sure about the frequency cap. Do you want me to set a cookie which stops displaying the banner as soon as it was shown 3 resp. 2 times? What would be reset after click? Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 20:16, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
@DerHexer, banner 1 says "learn more" and banner 2 is "enter now." Our hope is that if people click on "learn more," from then on they will only see "enter now." Otherwise, they will see "learn more" 3 times if they are a logged in user (targeting community members more) and 2 for logged out readers. What do you think? MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 20:30, 1 September 2022 (UTC)

Central Notice admin commentsEdit

  • @MPourzaki (WMF): I've created a campaign and banner for registered users (3 times visible per week), and a campaign and banner for anonymous users (2 times visible per week).
    • The English texts are deposited in the banner pages. You can find the links where you can enter the translations into other languages in the banner previews (registered, anonymous); just change to the target language and submit your texts.
    • However, a sequence of banners as proposed (once banner 1 was clicked, banner 2 should be visible) has to be scripted somehow. But that's beyond my abilities. Please check the stuff I did so far and let me know.
  • Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 20:46, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
    • Hi @DerHexer:, thank you so much for your work. I still get "you are not authorized to preview banners, but from the ones I see, things look great." Just a note that the Learn More banner and the Enter Now banner have different texts, please see uploaded visuals above. If the sequencing is complicated, how about we show Learn More for the first week and Enter Now for the remaining 3 weeks? Here is a link to our concept of the visuals. Thanks again for everything. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 14:25, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
      • @MPourzaki (WMF): Done, “What is the sound of all human knowledge? You can help us create it. Submit your sound.” was included. I hope that this was right. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 10:18, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
@DerHexer, comparing to the banners above, we have the first one set:
        • We usually invite the world to create the sum of all human knowledge. Now we are inviting the world to create the sound of all human knowledge. Learn More.
        • Play your part! Take part in an open contest to find the sound of all human knowledge – a sound log for all Wikimedia projects. Enter Now.
I'm sorry if this wasn't coded well by us previously. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 14:41, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
Alright. Is it correct now? :) Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 14:45, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
Above I see registered reflecting one banner and anonymous reflecting the other. The previews look great, thank you so much. Both banners can be presented to both anonymous and registered users. By the way, this is the website to link to: https://soundlogo.wikimedia.org/ MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 15:58, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi @DerHexer, I have now uploaded our existing translations (en + 8 languages) for both banners. Will you check to make sure this has been done correctly? Also sharing the landing page / website for both banners: https://soundlogo.wikimedia.org/
Thank you so much, less than a week to go until launch :) MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 16:01, 8 September 2022 (UTC)
@MPourzaki (WMF): I've marked these translations as published. That should do.
Thanks as well for the link to the landing page. Since this has translated content as well, I've added a script to the banners which directly takes the readers on these projects to the localized landing page, with a default for the English source text for other wikis and English-language wikis. Please check the example previews: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 16:54, 8 September 2022 (UTC)
Thank you, DerHexer! These look nearly perfect, as I assume the Dutch one will be translated shortly. We have three last tweaks to request:
Correction, DerHexer, we've gotten some Foundation staff on board to make these changes and save you some time. :-) Ed WMF [talk] 21:34, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
@Ed Erhart (WMF): I've checked the changes and they look good to me now. Another developer already fixed the code so that my additional scripts should be doing. I have also checked if the change of text caused invalidation of the translations. Fortunately, this does not seem to be the case. If possible, provide text only once. Let me know when you have the landing page translated into more languages. The forwarding on local wikis to the translated landing page can be easily ammended by newly supported languages. If we don't add that to the banner texts, the readers will be taken to the English page first. (This only applies to translations of the landing page. Please don't ping me when just the banners were translated into other languages.) Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 07:48, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
@DerHexer: I'm sorry we caused that concern at such a late hour, but I'm glad to hear it didn't invalidate any of the existing translations! It was an unfortunately small oversight of the kind we usually catch. Here are the translated landing pages:
Ed WMF [talk] 14:21, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
Could someone (@DerHexer?) please protect the two images used in the banners commons:File:Sound_Logo_Logo.png and commons:File:Wikimedia_wordmark.png. Peter Coombe (WMF) (talk) 19:31, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
Done. —DerHexer (Talk) 19:42, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, both! Ed WMF [talk] 23:28, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
@DerHexer: Would it be possible to enable the banners? :-) Ed WMF [talk] 14:52, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
Done. Is there a reason why the banners should not be shown on other language wikis? Users could help out with banner translations and could be taken to the English landing Page. —DerHexer (Talk) 16:06, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi @DerHexer, thank you, we are live and couldn't be more grateful. The banner could be shown on all language wikis, maybe I entered this wrong at the beginning. If possible, please activate. I just wanted to make sure the 9 priority and translated languages were singled out. English is great for the rest. Danke. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 16:53, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
Done. —DerHexer (Talk) 17:35, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
Hopefully one of, if not the, last question for you, DerHexer! We'd like to change the banner wording to call out when we're in the last week of submissions (2022-10-03 to 10-10). I'm thinking all we'd need to do is edit the CNBanner: translation pages to add the new text, keeping the lengths similar, and we wouldn't have to ask you or anyone else with the appropriate userrights to take on any additional work. Is that plan correct and allowable under central notice guidelines/practices? Ed WMF [talk] 02:27, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
@Ed Erhart (WMF): Some thoughts about that: It's technically possible to replace the English text with a new one. I'm not sure if all translations will be automatically invalidated or not. The answer to that would not prevent the next step: Copying your translations of the new text into the supported languages. It's pretty likely that a translation administrator has to approve them to be published (for both banners = 16 clicks). If we assume that the other languages into which volunteers have translated the texts will be invalidated, likely the new English original text will be displayed (and translators encouraged to translate into their languages once again; an extra burden for them). If we assume that the other languages will not be invalidated, you are running the same banner with different meanings globally—maybe translations could be invalidated manually but I will not spend time on that. If new translations are favored, a manual clone of the banner might be the best choice (because cloning the banner would also clone all translations; which usually ends up in severe chaos). Alright, what works best for you? Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 15:05, 23 September 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for all of the detail, DerHexer! The idea here is to change the language to encourage people who thought about submitting to do it ASAP. It'll be another short sentence with a button, nothing more. We've been getting a lot of submissions so far, and we want to make sure people understand that submissions will definitely be closed—we actually can't extend the deadline.
Our plan is to have translations for the nine languages we've been supporting, and Foundation staff like MPourzaki (WMF) can take on the burden of approving translations in other languages. With that in mind + everything you've said, I'm thinking that a manual clone of the banner makes the most sense and will cause the least disruption for y'all. (And I'm also thinking that my original idea was bad! :-) )
Would you be able to do the manual cloning? The campaign name could be something like "Wikimedia Sound Logo contest final week". Thanks again, DerHexer. Ed WMF [talk] 04:04, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
@Ed Erhart (WMF): I've set the regular campaigns to end on 3 October 23:59 UTC, we have a new campaign for registered users in the final week with the related banner, as well as a new campaign for anonymous users in the final week with the related banner. I have entered the old texts (without any translations). But you can start your preparations right now: Please enter the new texts on the banner pages in the input fields (you need to refresh with F5 to see the changes, sometimes you have to re-enter or refresh again; lovely software). Once the English text is correct, you can either click on the [ Help with translations! ] links in the preview or follow the Text/Learn links in the “Translatable banner messages” section. Please change to the target language and submit your translations, click publish on top of the page, etc. If you don't have permissions for any of these, let me know. Once everything is ready, please also ping me so that I can check it and enable the new campaigns. Which means that this should be done before 4 October. ;) Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 14:50, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
@DerHexer: What, we can't finish this after it's supposed to start? :-p Thank you so much for all this work! I'm working with Mehrdad to get the initial text and translations up. More soon! Ed WMF [talk] 00:11, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi @DerHexer, hi @Ed Erhart (WMF), I just tried to update the text in English, but wasn't able, don't have such right apparently. I could do the translations though, but I'll wait until English is updated. This is the message for both logged in and anonymous users for the final week of the contest: "Did you hear that? Only 1 week left to submit your entry for The Sound of All Human Knowledge. Help us find Wikimedia's sound logo by 10 October." If you are able to update the text, I'll run with the translations. Thank you both very much. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 17:45, 1 October 2022 (UTC)
@MPourzaki (WMF) Done for both banners. Ciell (talk) 18:09, 1 October 2022 (UTC)
Thank you so much @Ciell. It seems that I'm not able to upload the translations either. I was last time. Today I'm getting "You are not authorized to preview banners, or your edit token has expired." I have translation admin rights otherwise. We have 9 translations ready to upload whenever I can get in. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 19:18, 1 October 2022 (UTC)
This and that works for me even logged out. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 19:39, 1 October 2022 (UTC)
For me too. Fantastic, thank you. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 23:04, 1 October 2022 (UTC)
I've enabled both campaigns. From your comments I conclude that you approve the new settings and banners. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 22:18, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
Hey @Ciell, not urgent at all. How can I see how many languages– uploaded by us and organic ones led by volunteers–the sound logo banner was translated into? I remember you did this for me a few years back for the Movement Strategy global conversations. Thank you. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 02:48, 9 November 2022 (UTC)
Hi @MPourzaki (WMF), I have not followed the campaign very closely, but looking at the admin interface there have been 4 banners active for the Sound logo contest. Let me link to the translation extension stats for them: 1 (reg), 2 (anon), 3 (anon final week), 4 (reg final week). (Make sure to check the bottom "Do not display languages which do not have any translations" and uncheck the default top option, and click 'show statistics' again)
Please realize, as I mentioned to you in the preparations of this contest, that there (still) is a bug that does not allow 'normal' users to review new translations. As far as I know, only CN admins and stewards can mark new translations as reviewed, so I am not sure how representative the language stats are for the number of translated messages that were actually seen by the readers. To get more specific banner statistics, you can put in a request for the research team through Phabricator: maybe they can be of more help. Ciell (talk) 08:43, 11 November 2022 (UTC)
Thank you so much @Ciell, this is mega helpful. I had missed the previous note about the translation bug. That's unfortunate. Maybe this is why previously I was struggling to get into the translation interface. For the next and final set of banners, I'll work with a steward to approve any new / organic translations. Thanks again. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 08:08, 12 November 2022 (UTC)

Final phase: votingEdit

Hi @DerHexer: it's us again. Hope you've been well. The contest closed and participation has been beyond even our greatest expectations, surely in no small part thanks to the banners and their incredible reach. Thank you for leading that entire process for us. We received more than 3000 submissions from 2000+ participants in 135 countries!!! Couldn't be happier. The scoring phase is going on now and soon the selection committee will convene to choose 10 sounds that the movement will then vote on, which brings us to this request. Would you be able to clone the previous banner with the text "Your contributions are instrumental to free knowledge. Now, you can play your part in deciding The Sound of All Human Knowledge. [VOTE TODAY]". We will insert our 8 translations and leave the rest open for anyone interested. Let me know if we missed anything. Thanks again. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 22:08, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
