Help wanted for global templates

edit

You have shown support for global templates in the past. Staff of the Wikimedia Foundation view this change as big. We need to convince the Wikimedia Foundation to start working on this. We have to reassure them there is sufficient support by local project communities.

You can help move this forward.

Please do setup a page on the local projects you are (most) active on in the language of the project. Tell your fellow editors why you believe global templates are necessary. Follow the local project decision process to come to a discussion outcome as support or not. There is plenty of time for discussion. Please reach a conclusion before the end of April 2021.

Please translate the coordinating page on meta to languages you are proficient in. Gathering_support_from_local_projects_for_global_templates

Please add a line to this meta page with a link to a discussion page on your local project(s).

The goal is to have the Wikimedia Foundation include a program to develop infrastructure for global templates in their 2021/2022 Annual Plan. The Wikimedia Foundation will decide on the Annual Plan in May/June this year.

The aim is to have several dozen local project communities to show support, and little concerns, issues or objections. Of course, any project can continue to use their local templates.

When you have questions about this initiative you can reach me at ad huikeshoven.org or + 31 6 40293574, and also on Telegram and Signal. You can also raise questions on the talk page on meta. Maybe some people would like to discuss this initiative in a meeting. Please let me know whether you would like to join a Zoom meeting in February.

--Wurgl (talk) 22:23, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Discussion about CentralNotice Adminship inactivity and membership

edit

Hello Steinsplitter. There's an ongoing discussion happening on Meta:Babel that proposes changes to existing Meta:Central notice administrators practices. In particular: membership duration and inactivity. As a current volunteer central notice administrator, your participation in the discussion would be appreciated. Thank you, --MarcoAurelio (via MassMessage) (talk) 10:45, 21 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

CentralNotice/Request/List

edit

Hi Steinsplitter,

For some reason, your bot is not updating the list anymore. Could you maybe check? Thanks! Ciell (talk) 15:15, 21 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

If you do have time, I think it would be very much appreciated if I could be repaired. I removed it, but it was a very handy tool to quickly see what requests were in need of attention. Ciell (talk) 18:47, 5 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Ciell: Hi, Sorry for the delay. This is fixed now. Best --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:20, 19 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users

edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Call For Volunteer Facilitators Across Africa

edit

The African Narrative

Dear Wikimedian,

The Africa Narrative is seeking volunteer facilitators in Egypt (two volunteers) and Senegal (two volunteers) for the AfroCreatives Wikiproject.

The AfroCreatives Wikiproject aims to support and mobilize creatives and professionals from the African creative sector, as well as enthusiasts more broadly, to contribute and enhance knowledge on Wikipedia about Africa’s creative economy. Its inaugural effort will target the film sectors of Egypt, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Senegal.

The Africa Narrative (TAN) is a non-profit that develops singular, high-impact initiatives in support of African creatives and the African cultural and creative industries with the aim to strengthen capacity in the continent’s creative economy and the global visibility of African cultural soft power.

All volunteers must have full professional proficiency in English. In Senegal, they must have native or full professional proficiency in French; in Egypt, they must have native or full professional proficiency in Arabic. Volunteer facilitators should have a vast knowledge about Wikimedia projects and experience with teaching new editors. All volunteers will be compensated.

Interested participants may sign up on the project's Meta page. You may also indicate your country and email if your Wikipedia account is not associated with any email address.

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Africa_Narrative/Volunteers

We will be glad if you can share with or recommend an Egyptian or Senegalese Wikipedian as well.

Thank you.

Notice of review of adminship (April 2023)

Global renamers/Stats

edit

Hi Steinsplitter, sorry for the trouble. I noticed that your bot updates the global renamers stats. I kindly ask you, when you've some time, to please remove the number of renames performed by the single renamer. If you need an explanation, I'm happy to provide it, but you can find everything in the last threads on the mailing list. If someone wants the number, just for stats, they could use xTools. The page can be view as a ranking, and this is bad, because in the recent years we saw a lot of speedy processed renames, also wrongly, and the stats could be seen like a "competition". Obviously, we actually need the last performed renames for inactivity purpose, so the page is very useful, and I thank you for keeping it updated! Many thanks again and wish you a nice day :) Superpes15 (talk) 11:18, 16 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

On which mailing list? Is there community consensus to do so? Steinsplitter (talk) 11:57, 29 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hello Steinsplitter, the bot has stopped updating the page (Global renamers/Stats) since September 2023. Is there a specific reason? If you could please re-start it. --Alaa :)..! 20:27, 1 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

globalusagecount's webservice is down

edit

No webservice The URL you have requested, https://globalusagecount.toolforge.org/?lang=en&file=Air+Force+Ensign+of+India.svg, is not currently serviced.

If it is gone away, then we need to remove it from the globalusage section at Commons.

Does your bot still work?

Asked your rotatingbot a number of times to rotate my images, but after days I do not see results. Before no problems, sometimes it worked even in minutes. Stunteltje (talk) 13:54, 18 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

why am I blocked?

edit

For some reason, I have drawn an automated block on Mediawiki. I am trying to post a problem I am having with my own wiki. Can the block be lifted and prevented from happening again? ArchATempAcct (talk) 21:48, 18 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
