Logo discussions & votes

  • Logo (current logos, guidelines, localisation)

Welcome to the process for finding a new logo for Wiktionary!

Phase 1 of the logo contest has been finished (archive); we have our four finalists! The finalists were determined by taking the logo group with the most votes and eliminating all logo groups which didn't have more than half of that amount. I arranged the various designs from the winning logo groups by similarity; if you disagree with my classification, please say so on the talk page.

In phase 2, which lasted from 22 September until 30 September, there was an opportunity to refine the existing designs and propose new ones which had to be based on the basic design of the finalist logos.

Phase 3 (1 October until 15 October) determined which logo was deemed the best of its group of similar logos.

In phase 4, which lasts from 16 October until 31 October, you can now determine the winning logo! Vote for ONE logo only. Please note that if the winning logo should happen to use Wikimedia colours or have blue as its most prominent colour, those colours will have to be changed afterwards to something which is okay with the Wikimedia Marketing Department.

If you have any questions, suggestions or complaints, please contact me on this page's or my own talk page. Thanks for participating!

Note : we're voting for the logo here. What will be written under it should be the choice of each community. So don't worry : there will be some text under those logos ;). - Darkdadaah 09:53, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

#A (Speech Bubbles, Magnifying Glasses and More) -- colours will have to be changed to non-Wikimedia colours

  4.   Support I see this logo as a creative response to the current Wikipedia logo. It also reminds me of Scrabble, which like Wiktionary can be a way of learning new words. This logo is more flexible than options A and C, because a language edition can decide to swap the W for another letter and the logo still retains its identity. The calligraphic W in the other two options can't easily be changed to a U or V or (wéi), so those logos would remain slightly out of place in languages whose translations for "Wiktionary" don't begin with a W. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 03:30, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    • I should add that while the basic idea behind logo C (calligraphy of “w”, “ω” and “文”) is noteworthy, I just didn't get the “文” part until it was expressly mentioned here (and “ω” is not very different from “w” anyway, so I didn't get that part, either (>_<)). Chances are, other people wouldn't see it, either.
Not that I'm saying everyone else is just as st00pid as myself (^_^), but I do think logo B drives that particular point home much more clearly, in addition to being “a creative response to the current Wikipedia logo”, as it has been mentioned earlier.
Plus, the very idea of using scrabble pieces is nothing short of ingenious. In a very weird, yet subtle and very charming way, it mirrors exactly what Wiktionary regulars are doing day in and day out. --Schwallex 22:08, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  60.   Support. I love this design. It's attractive, distinctive, relevant and easily adaptable for different languages. Design "C" isn't bad, but it depends upon its similarity to the Wikimedia logo (much of which would be lost upon changing the colors) and has no obvious connection to a dictionary. —Lifeisunfair (David Levy at the English Wikipedia) 17:20, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do not count this as a vote. I just want to share this with you. A Japanese letter that appears in the "Scrabble-Mah Jong" style logo (the top left) is “シ” (shi) and it shares the same pronunciation with a Japanese word for death. Some traditional (superstitious) people consider it as bad luck.--Californiacondor 03:23, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Shi" can also mean "market", "poem", "four", or "reverend". シ was probably taken from the fourth character in ウィクショナリー, or Wiktionary in Japanese; and I'd say it must be a really superstitious person to consider this logo as meaning "death". --朝彦 (Asahiko)
Heh, this logo already helped me learn a new word, and it isn't even the logo yet. :^) – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 17:52, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What stop us from selecting (in each language, ja, zh, ...) a character that "bring more luck"? Tttrung 08:52, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing. Even if we select this logo, there is still plenty of room for improvement. Aim high. 朝彦 (Asahiko) read carefully. I did not write that "this logo means death."  :) --Californiacondor 14:19, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Must've misinterpreted... sorry about that. ;-) Well we can always change letters if there is a need. (Or so I hope. For the Wikipedia logo, numerous attempts to correct errors in the logo have not succeeded. [1], [2], [3] etc.) --朝彦 (Asahiko) 12:17, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose Smurrayinchester is setting himself/herself up for a lot of logo customizations next month. :^) I'd help, but I don't have access to a decent SVG editor at the moment. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 21:53, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's just a good thing this logo was designed to be easy to change! Smurrayinchester 16:33, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Smurrayinchester, while I like the text that you've placed below the English and Russian previews of the logo, your SVG reproductions seem a bit off, at least on my monitor. The tiles have an odd tinge of blue towards the top-left, and the Chinese character at the bottom is different than the original (维 wéi). – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 21:15, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I can't see the blue-ish tinge you speak of, but I'll check the files. As for the chinese character, unfortunately, my SVG editor only allows the Wéi in one font, Arial Unicode, which doesn't match with the other, serif/calligraphic fonts (I've uploaded an example here) Smurrayinchester 23:10, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The top-left corners seem a bit bluer, but on closer examination it might just be a lack of red and green that's causing it, since the bottom-right corners have more red and gren. (I'm using a Mac LCD screen, by the way.) I don't really have a problem with your choice of Chinese character, but it looks a lot less polished than the one in the PNG version. The strokes are a lot thinner yet barely variable-width, so the character looks like it was penciled in, rather than calligraphically drawn. The top three tiles aren't serif/calligraphic either, but those tiles don't look as striking. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 01:26, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Aha! Problem solved; I imported the Wéi and Shi glyphs from Publisher, so they now look exactly the same as the old ones. Smurrayinchester 10:18, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It does look blue and somewhat "stale" on my Mac also, and it has been bothering me. Maybe it has something to do with monitor calibration of the system or something like that. Comparing the top left corner of the scrabble piece, DigitalColor Meter says #E9CC9D for the raster, #D1D1A2 for SVG. Maybe you could raise red slightly and lower the blue? --朝彦 (Asahiko) 12:30, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh, I see what you mean. I'm a touch colourblind, so I didn't notice that I'd got the wrong colour balance. I've fixed it, and it does seem a lot richer now. Thanks! Smurrayinchester 12:36, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Beautiful. Thank you! --朝彦 (Asahiko) 16:11, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think that the problem with this logo is that it's impossible to represent all the alphabets. Meithal 20:50, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's a sampling of different alphabets (similar to that of the Wikipedia globe). Each Wiktionary can feature a character from its language's alphabet on the center tile (regardless of whether that particular alphabet is included in the examples above). Conversely, the "W" logos (which is how designs "A" and "C" would be perceived) cannot be adapted. —Lifeisunfair (David Levy at the English Wikipedia) 21:02, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I just thought about it thanks to some discussion below but... what will be the central letter for the general logo (the one that will be in the central page http://www.wiktionary.org) ? Note that A & C aren't trying to represent alphabets, but the mixing of languages, so the logo would be the same for every project. But what about this one ? - Darkdadaah 16:12, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good point. Perhaps for the main portal, the central letter should be the W (as the main portal is written in English), but with a blue letter rather than a red one (the current Wikt main logo is worse, as it is written completely in English on an international page). Smurrayinchester 16:26, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes but the logo itself should not be changed instead of the subtitle which can be changed, should it ? And the W of the other logo don't only represent the letter but also a human which intervining a something i forgot, and it could be considered like an universal symbol imo. Meithal 19:12, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I vaguely remember something about "crossed arms". But, like Schwallex said below, a good logo shouldn't need to be accompanied by fine print that explains the symbolism. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 21:24, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
We could make a custom graphic using all nine tiles, but having them all in blue (the W tile will be blue in some of the versions anyways) and leaving the center empty. Or we could display just one animated tile that slowly switches between all nine characters, like some multilingual websites do with the word "Welcome". That would indicate that none of the scripts are more important than the others, which is important for the portal. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 19:27, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that in each logo, there will always miss hundred "minor" alphabets. It seems to encourage the favoritism for most wide-spreaded alphabets I fear. 213.103.237.251 22:43, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Note that this suggestion is only about the image that should appear in the multilingual portal, not on each site. Hopefully with a slow enough animation, and with enough of a variety of characters (nine or ten should be enough), visitors would get the idea that it's just a sampling. I'm not sure if you've seen the recent McDonald's i'm lovin' it, but the last time I checked, the restaurant's food packaging featured "I love it" in what looks to be many, many different languages. Upon closer inspection, though, it only included a dozen or so languages, repeated over and over again. I'm certainly not advocating that we copy McDonald's, but even with option B, including nine or so scripts won't seem Eurocentric, Americentric, Anglocentric, or even alphabecentric (!), since the author did aim for variety.
Out of the nearly 70 languages listed at the Wiktionary portal, only seven aren't represented by this logo. (And that includes languages that are represented by the top-center tile, since I don't know which script that belongs to. If it's Devanagari, then only five aren't represented.) The Wiktionary portal will always miss a lot of minor languages: you can go to Wiktionary for the complete listing.

It is Devanāgarī; श represents the sh- sound in ship (a Voiceless postalveolar fricative). I based my choice of letters by this list; the most common writing systems were Chinese, Devanāgarī, Latin, Arabic, Cyrillic, Japanese, Shahmukhi (which is almost equivalent to Arabic) and Hangul (Korean), with Hebrew and Greek being the only other typefaces supported by my computer. I originally also had Thai in place of Korean, but decided Korean was a more global language (there are very few Thai speaking communities outside Thailand). Smurrayinchester 09:11, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If this logo is the one accepted, does that mean that every language will get a letter? (example ñ for Spanish (Español), ç for French (Français) and son on) Thats a lot of letters!--200.44.7.131 03:32, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's probably up to the individual communities as to whether they want to customize it that much, but I think the original intent was that each script would get a customized logo, so that all the languages that use a Latin-based alphabet get a W or A in the center. Smurrayinchester did say they're willing to do a lot of customizations, though, and every language will get a translated "Wiktionary, the free dictionary" at the bottom. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 18:31, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still worried about the international logo... I find it too much customizable (but I already said that ^^). Maybe I'll just go to WiktionaryZ instead :P - Darkdadaah 22:17, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You mean the "Potential portal logo"? That's just one proposal; have you seen my idea right above here? GIFs aren't patented anymore, so we're free to create them. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 00:43, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm talking about a logo that represents the project and can be used on papers, posters, etc. not only in the Internet. That's why I think the logo should be static. And I don't think that the guys who didn't want the Wikimedia colors tober used, would like an animated logo too ^^' - Darkdadaah 18:32, 30 October 2006 (UTC) (je cherche la petite bête)[reply]

#C (Calligraphic W) -- colours will have to be changed to non-Wikimedia colours

This is a Calligraphy of Latin lettre "W" & Greek lettre "ω" & Hanzi character "文" (follow link for further explanations).

  23. More "logo-like" than #B that, in my opinion, is more a scrabble logo than a dictionary one (It is sad though that the colour thing is known only at this phase...). This logo is more about exchanging words in different languages (-> crossing colors) than just listing words. It is also dynamic, not static (like words). I think it is also more original, simpler and easier to remember :P - Darkdadaah 17:05, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

(In response to Meithal's vote above.) The center tile in option B can always be customized to represent the script that is used on each Wiktionary. So, for example, the Armenian Wiktionary can replace the W with Վ. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 21:41, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Meithal, I do understand your objection, but I don't quite get your logic. How come you're voting for option C then, in which even more alphabets are missing (in fact, all but three), and in which they'll be missing forever? (As opposed to option B which can be easily customized, as it has been pointed out already). --Schwallex 13:49, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Just to say, IMO a general logo like that should be static, if only for representing the project as a whole (what will the scrabble logo piece be for the multilingual project ? W ?). At least, this logo is homogenous, not trying to represent every alphabets (even the scrabble can't, of course), but representing the mixing of several. Trying to defend my view >< - Darkdadaah 16:06, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Schwallex, to this logo's defense, it's abstract enough that it doesn't claim to include many languages, since most people will only see it as a "Calligraphic W". I happen to find option B's more descriptive approach (you can tell that Wiktionary has something to do with language) more suitable to the project than this option's abstract approach, but clearly there are people on both sides. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 17:33, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yepp, that's pretty much exactly what I was saying myself when voting for logo B (see above).
My point here is that logo C does claim to include a few languages — on this very page, in fact.
And I think that at least some people are voting for logo C precisely because of that (“oh, look, it's a calligraphy of several alphabets — now, that's a fine idea”). Which is perfectly fine with me — as long as they notice that all by themselves, without being given any hints.
I think each logo should be judged on its own merits, without being accompanied by any explanation whatsoever. If a logo does mean something to someone, fine, but, we should not coerce people into seeing something they wouldn't see all by themselves. Otherwise, we are going to get biased/forged/unfair results.
--Schwallex 20:18, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I guess what I'm trying to say is: if you voted for logo C, please hold on a sec and ask yourself: did you vote for it because you got the (admittedly, very fine) idea behind it — or did you vote for it merely because it's a beautifully drawn “W”? And if the latter is the case, then please allow me to ask the somewhat impolite question: just how exactly would/could a “W”, however beautifully drawn, help discriminate the Wiktionary against any of the three gazillion other wikis whose names happen to begin with a “W”?
(Once again, I explicitly apologize if I sound rude, especially if I sound rude to the author of this logo. I most certainly don't intend to hurt anyone's feelings or to directly attack anyone in particular.)
--Schwallex 20:38, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I was saying that the logo itself doesn't claim to be multilingual; that's what the author or various supporters of the logo have come up with. A good logo for Wiktionary, as you point out, shouldn't be a Rorschach test, no matter how beautiful. Now, about your question, it may just be me, but the tile "favicon" for option B still looks like a beautifully-drawn W. ;^) I think this discussion is getting off-topic, anyhow; we can continue the discussion at the talk page. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 21:30, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I take your point. (>_<) All three of them, in fact. (^_^)

I'm not sure what you're looking for in a logo, then, but if you'd like the choices to have some symbolism behind them, then options A–C represent the melding or piecing together of many different languages (and by extension, cultures) to form something beautiful. Someone else may have to explain option D, because I still don't get it, except that the > might be an open book, facing to the left. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 05:54, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
