By the way, this list contains a few bad entries (users without registered user accounts). It looks like some kind of encoding issue, maybe? Examples: User talk:Walter55024 ?ó_ en.wikipedia.org, User talk:Vaishnavi.Srinivasan ?ó_ en.wikipedia.org, and User talk:Cl?ment Vachon en.wikipedia.org. This isn't a big deal as one of my database reports will catch these pages, but you should master Unicode at some point to prevent your lists from having issues like this. Luckily this list (of users from the English Wikipedia) has few characters outside of ASCII, but other (non-English) projects will not be this forgiving at all. :-) --MZMcBride (talk) 17:36, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Badge Project

Hey! One thing that I'm currently working on trying to figure out is a good way to test whether badges are actually effective. From your work with the Teahouse project I was wondering if you may have some thoughts on good testing strategies. We will mainly want to know whether badges can help bolster participation and editing activity. We'd also want to be collecting stats to make sure that badges aren't demotivating or are being completely ignored. Probably some combination of qualitative and quantitative data gathering to see how people's editing/participation activity fared after interacting with badges. Thoughts? Help test better mass message delivery

Hi. You're being contacted as you've previously used global message delivery (or its English Wikipedia counterpart). It doesn't feel so great to be spammed, does it? ;-)

For the past few months, Legoktm has built a replacement to the current message delivery system called MassMessage. MassMessage uses a proper user interface form (no more editing a /Spam subpage), works faster (it can complete a large delivery in minutes), and no longer requires being on an access list (any local administrator can use it). In addition, many tiny annoyances with the old system have been addressed. It's a real improvement! :-)

You can test out MassMessage here: testwiki:Special:MassMessage. The biggest difference you'll likely notice is that any input list must use a new {{#target:}} parser function. For example, {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales}} or {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales|test2.wikipedia.org}}. For detailed instructions, check out mw:Help:Extension:MassMessage.

Snowy Sunday musing about database reports

Hi. I believe you have some familiarity with database reports. I'd like someone to take the current database reports implementation, which was really just a proof-of-concept, and turn it into proper software (good code). This would mean significantly cleaning up the code (or outright rewriting a lot of it) in order to make the reports fast and localized/internationalized.

There are some thoughts at w:en:Wikipedia:Database reports/Redesign. I also obviously have some thoughts on the matter. As you can see above, I've now finished up transitioning global message delivery from a hackish Python script into a MediaWiki extension. I think I can help shepherd this project through.

Why am I contacting you? Because I see that you're also involved with grants. I'd like to make it a priority to find someone to expand (globalize and modernize) database reports. I think this is exactly the kind of high-impact work that can come from a small one-time grant (though a portion of me realizes it's perhaps equally possible to find someone to do the work for free...). I personally have little time or interest in (re-)coding database reports, but I'd be happy to help test and discuss and prod and poke as I can. :-) I just need your help to find someone who's suitable to do this and possibly secure funding.

Hey MZMcBride, I'd suggest writing the idea up in IdeaLab, too - that way if/when someone is found to take on the project and funding is needed, they can build there from idea to grant proposal. I think this is a great idea. I've always loved the db reports infrastructure, have used it in research and basically learned how to code Python by reverse-engineering db report scripts. And I'm surprised that more people aren't aware of it. Off the top of my head, I'd say it could be especially valuable if the redesigned reports extension/module/platform is more user-configurable, as the redesign document hints at, and also if it includes a solid process by which non-maintainers can request new reports, or submit code to have their custom reports automated. I've talked to both Biosthmors and Bluerasberry, at various points, about projects that would involve creating new reports. Aaron and Dario, do either of you have any thoughts on this? Hi Touzrimounir you won't be able to do that with a normal Quarry query, because the information you want isn't stored in the normal MediaWiki databases. I believe that you'll need to use the WikiData Query Sevice, and I'm not (yet) very familiar with the syntax or the data structures of that service. Timeless Newsletter • Issue 1

Welcome to the first issue of the Timeless newsletter! This issue is being sent or forwarded to everyone who has at some point expressed an interest in the project, give or take, as well as a couple of other potentially relevant pages, so if you would like to continue (or start) receiving this newsletter directly, please sign up for further updates on the meta page.

The news:

The Timeless grant has been selected for funding, and the project is now underway!

While I've had a somewhat slow start working on the project for health reasons, I'm pleased to announce that everything described in the proposal is now either happening, or on its way to happening.

Current progress:

• The project now has a hub on Meta to serve as a directory for the various related pages, workboards, and local discussions and help pages. It's probably incomplete, especially with regards to specific language projects that might have local pages for Timeless, so if you know of others, please add them!
• Outreach: I've been talking to various people and groups directly about skinning, desktop/mobile interfaces, project management, specific component support, and other things, and have begun to compile a very shoddy list of skinning problems and random issues on mw.org based on this. Some of this may inform the direction of this project, or possibly this project will result in building a more proper list that can then be used for other things. We shall see.
• Some development - task triage, code review, bug fixing, and various rabbit holes involving ...overflows.

General plan for the future:

• Triage the rest of the workboard.
• Catch up with all the talkpages and other bug reports that have been left various other places that are not the project workboard
• Do all the bug fixes/features/other things!
• Some proposals aimed at Commons and Wikisource in particular (maybe, we'll see)

Essentially, the grant as written shall be carried out. This was the plan, and remains the plan. Timelines remain fuzzy, but while there have been some initial delays, I don't particularly expect the timeline for project as a whole to change a whole lot.

Also, for anyone at Wikimania right now: I am also at Wikimania. Come talk to me in person!
