Translation combination boxes edit

The following text was copied from Meta:Babel#Translation_combination_boxes. As an active translator, it may be of any interest to you:

Hi, Sabine worked on new boxes for translators. They aim at giving information about translation combination: say, I can translate from English to French, from Italian to Spanish, and so on. It would help us to know who can translate what, in what, to streamline the translation process. The boxes do not provide information about your level (wether you are a professional translator or not, for example); you may write something about this point in your user page (very useful as well). A few boxes are available, be bold and create those you need :) Be aware we use ISO 639-3 codes for languages (fra and not fr, eng and not en, ...).

Please see "Translator in the following language combinations" and pick up templates for your user page!
This message was pasted on several User talk pages of active translators.

Thank you :)

Translation team fr edit

Hi. I created a subpage for the French translation team as part of the translation coordination effort. If you consider yourself as a (willing?) active translator (eng-> fra or fra->eng), please add your name on the members' list. Soon, I'll add a selection of pending translation tasks. Thank you!

Bonjour. Je viens de créer une sous page French translation team, dans le but d'améliorer la coordination du processus de traduction. Si vous vous considérez comme un traducteur actif (ou potentiellement actif à court terme), n'hésitez pas à vous ajouter à la liste des membres de l'équipe. J'ajouterai très bientôt une liste de tâche à faire dans le domaine de la traduction fra->eng ou eng->fra. jd  20:44, 22 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello,

I'm not too sure how to say this... but the french translation you did on that page made almost no sense : I'm french, and I had to read the english version to understand what was said.

While working hard in translatings is commendable, I feel it would be better that you leave the french part to more fluent people.

have a nice evening

That's fine. Just put it in the edit summary. It is hard to identify what exactly happened so the only safe way to handle it is to revert first and ask later. :) Ottava Rima (talk) 00:04, 31 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Your translations edit

Hello JB82. Thank you for your enthusiasm and desire to help translate documents for us. However, I'm worried that you are translating into languages that you do not know very well. Although we welcome your help, you should only be translating into languages of which you have advanced knowledge (usually native or near-native levels), not ones that you are practicing or trying to learn. We have gotten some complaints about a few of your translations, most recently the German and French "Wiki 10" banners, with people saying that they look like Google translations and being upset that they were set as "ready" before being reviewed. I just looked at your contributions and it looks like you are also translating into languages that you do not even list in your babel boxes, which worries me because it seems you haven't studied them at all.

Would you mind only translating into languages that you have a high-degree of fluency in (i.e. native level)? Again, we love your enthusiasm and are happy you are trying to help, but the translations need to be high-quality ones done by native speakers in order for us to use them. Translator, We need you! edit

Dear JB82,

You have helped us in previous years with translations and for that we are most grateful. Now we turn towards the 2011/12 fundraiser. It may seem forever away, but work has already begun getting everything ready to go. This year we want to have landing pages covering as many countries in as many languages as possible.

Right now, we want to figure out who is interested in translating for the fundraiser. This year we're hoping to have more of a solidified "core" group of translators that we can count on to have work done by a few key dates, but we'd also welcome help from people who are willing to just help out when they can.

If you would be interested please take a look at this little sign-up survey and fill it out http://survey.wikimedia.org/index.php?sid=13638&newtest=Y&lang=en. With that we can start building a list of people and filling any gaps in the languages we serve.

Many Thanks

Chinese translations edit

Hi JB82, thanks a lot for helping out with the translations of the :Wikimedia Highlights! It seems that part of Wikimedia_Highlights,_November_2011/zh-hans is based on Google Translate. It is a great tool, but it might be worth having a proficient Chinese speaker verify and improve the translation before it goes live; are you intending to do that? It is planned to announce the translations of the current "Wikimedia Highlights" on the general WikimediaAnnounce-l mailing list soon, but if you need a bit more time to finalize this one (which is displayed at 92% completion at the moment), I could hold off the announcement until tomorrow or so. A barnstar for you! edit

This barnstar is given to you for your help with the 2011 fundraiser translation.

Hi! I just want to thank you and give you this barnstar for your help with the translation of the 2011 fundraiser! The fundraiser was the best we ever had, both in terms of the amount we collected and in terms of number of translations. We couldn't have done either one without the help we got from you and other translators. If you are interested, we made a report, which has some statistics about the translations.

And: I have one more request, and that is that you take this survey. You may have got an e-mail about it, and if you did, please ignore this. But if you didn't it would be great if you would take this survey too, so we can learn to improve the translation experience.

Again, thanks for your help with translations – you're awesome! Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 13:30, 24 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Your French translations edit

All your French translations are completely wrong. Visibly you don't know that language at all as there are missing articles everywhere, missing matches for plurals, incorrect plurals or feminine forms, incorrect conjugated verbs everywhere, incorrect grammar, and confusion between various words.

Visibly you've attempted a word for word translation using some dictionnary but you level of French is really too poor to be usable. It too frequently produces complete non-sense (even the automatic Google Translator would produce better result than what you did, visibly you used a really ppor automatic translator tool based only on a word lookup in dictionnary, and this tool is simply unable to choose the correct term when there are differentt meanings).

After looking in a page your tried to translate, EVERY sentence required at least two or three corrections, and frequently a complete reconstruction of sentences.

If you wanted to test your level of ptoficiency for French, your score is just about 2/10 (for writing), far below average most speakers of French (even worse than non-native speakers speking Frnech only as a secondary language). You can probably read it more easily than you can write it (so you may continue translating from French to English).

It is typical of texts found in cheap products made in China whose user notices initially written in Chinese, is first translated poorly in English and then extremely poorly translated to French already from an incorrect or very ambigous English text, producing non-sense. And apparently your don't even know any Romance language and are thnking only in Chinese which is completely different (may be you can use English but even your level of English is a bit funny even if English is very permissive; but simpler to you as it has no gender, very basic conjugation and very basic syntax, even if its orthography is extremely irregular).

I'm not even convinced that US English is your native language; apparently you seem to "think" about what you say in some East Asian language (Chinese, Indonesian, Thai...) or you have a strange way to think English ! a good speaker of (British) English adopts at least a syntax that looks more like French than what you write. Are you speaking natively an Amerindian language (Navajo, Apache, Cree...) ?

There are enough French translators in Meta, so please STOP contributing for French as the real French translators will not see the real work that remains to do that your pseudo-work just has hidden to them. Thanks. verdy_p (talk) 10:38, 16 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Translations to Italian edit

FYI, several of your translations are things an Italian speaker would never write or say (example: non-existing verb declension, incorrect kind of predicate, dubious choice of term and capitalisation). In some cases, an Italian reader will not be able to understand the meaning even of short strings, without concentration and imagination. --Nemo 10:59, 16 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review edit

I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:39, 29 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Open Call for Individual Engagement Grants edit

Greetings! The Individual Engagement Grants (IEG) program is accepting proposals until April 12th to fund new tools, research, outreach efforts, and other experiments that enhance the work of Wikimedia volunteers. Whether you need a small or large amount of funds (up to $30,000 USD), IEGs can support you and your team’s project development time in addition to project expenses such as materials, travel, and rental space.

With thanks, I JethroBT (WMF), Community Resources 15:56, 31 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 17:47, 31 May 2016 (UTC) (Opt-out instructions)Reply

Translation request for New Readers Inspire Campaign-- and thanks! edit

Hi there! I'm contacting you because you've volunteered your time in the past to help translate Inspire Campaigns, or you've expressed an interest about helping to translate. We have a new campaign starting soon about new readers, as we try to encourage contributors to develop ideas on how to inform and invite people to use Wikipedia, especially in places where folks are not aware of it. There are two pages that will need translation:

There will be one additional page for translation that includes the questions we will be asking idea creators when they submit ideas for the campaign. I will notify you when that prose is ready.

Finally, thank you for your support; it's very important to me that these campaigns are accessible to folks across non-English Wikimedia projects, and I wouldn't be able to do that without your time and effort. In appreciation, I'd like to send you a postcard from Chicago where I reside. If you'd like to receive a postcard from me, please e-mail me with an address I contact you at to my work e-mail, cschilling wikimedia.org. I realize this is private information, so if you would prefer not to receive a postcard, that is understandable. Your work to make our projects accessible to everyone is no less appreciated. Please let me know if you have any questions about the prose regarding translation. Thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) 20:33, 8 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Community Wishlist Survey 2020 needs translations edit

Hello!

I'm contacting you because you've already translated some messages for the Community Wishlist Survey. We need more translations for the 2020 edition, to create a survey that would serve as many users as we know.

The list below shows our needs by order of importance (most important first):

  1. The invitation sent to communities. It summarizes the process. We plan to distribute it soon on this year target wikis. The more translations we have, the better!
  2. The form for non-English speakers. Anyone should be able to add their wish, no matter which language they speak. Translating this short form is very important to encourage diversity and equity.
  3. The survey itself, where the entire process is described.
  4. The preload form, that provides more context on existing wishes.

Some languages are already covered (maybe by you), but some messages have been updated, and there is always some room for reviewing and polishing messages.

Thank you in advance for your help! This survey can't be successful without your assistance. :)
