The project began with the English-language Wikipedia on January 15, 2001. On March 16, 2001, it was joined by German Wikipedia, and shortly afterwards by many other languages. Large efforts are underway to highlight the international nature of the project.
As of March 2024, there are 325 Wikipedias which have over 100 articles, 170 of which have over 10,000 articles, and 71 of which have over 100,000 articles.
As of March 2024, there are 339 language editions of Wikipedia, which collectively have 62,762,820 articles.
Milestones

The English Wikipedia hit 1,000,000 articles on 1 March 2006, 2,000,000 articles on 9 September 2007, 3,000,000 articles on 17 August 2009, 4,000,000 articles on 13 July 2012, 5,000,000 articles on 1 November 2015, and 6,000,000 articles on 23 January 2020.
İngiliscə Vikipediyanın ardınca alman (27 dekabr 2009), fransız (21 sentyabr 2010), holland (17 dekabr 2011), italyan (22 yanvar 2013), rus (11 may 2013), ispan (16 may 2013), isveç (15 iyun 2013), polyak (24 sentyabr 2013), varay (8 iyun 2014), vyetnam (15 iyun 2014), sebuano (16 iyul 2014) və yapon (19 yanvar 2016) dillərindəki Vikipediyalarda məqalə sayı 1 milyonu keçdi.
5 sentyabr 2015-ci ildə isveçcə Vikipediya və ardınca 14 fevral 2016-cı ildə sebuano Vikipediyası 2 milyon məqalə həddini aşdılar.
On 27 April 2016, the Swedish Wikipedia hit 3,000,000 articles followed by the Cebuano Wikipedia on 25 September 2016.[1]
On 11 February 2017, the Cebuano Wikipedia hit 4,000,000 articles.[1]
On 8 August 2017, the Cebuano Wikipedia hit 5,000,000 articles.[1]
On 14 October 2021, the Cebuano Wikipedia hit 6,000,000 articles.[1]
In 2004 Wikipedia won the Webby Award for "Community" and the Prix Ars Electronica for "Digital Community". In 2015, the Erasmus Prize was awarded to the Wikipedia community collectively.
