Foundation:Terms of Use is available in too few languages.

The term of use page is linked underneath all Wikimedian site, providing guidance to usage of Wikiprojects, including all pages here in meta, and all Wikipedia of all languages editions, as well as all other projects, making it probably one of the most linked and one of the most important page hosted by WMF. Yet, it is only available in 29 languages, which I see as far from sufficient for contributors, readers, and content consumers from various different language background. I also see no way for regular contributors to help translate the page.

I propose to at least translate the page into a few major languages, including Chinese, Hindi, Khmer, Tamil, Persian, Turkish, Hungarian, Swedish, Swahili, Hausa, Zulu, Yoruba, Malagasy, Tagalog, Fijian, and Samoan, and also providing translation in more languages of just the summary and link them on the top part of the "in other languages" panel.

I am making this suggestion as some Chinese language users have incorrectly relied on Google Translate to view the page due to the page's lack of availability in other languages, which didn't provide accurate translation of the terms of use of Wikimedian content, and caused them to abuse the relevant content in ways that can be prevented by making available an accurate translation. How to inform editors of the CC0 license for PD-help pages on mediawikiwiki

On Mediawikiwiki there is a collection of CC0 licensed help pages: mw:Project:PD help.
As Mediawikiwiki as a whole is licensed BY-SA 3.0, users are notified separately of the fact that their contributions to help pages are released into the public domain. This is primarily communicated using an edit notice, but mobile editors can't see those. There are several ways to ensure everyone is made aware of the license (which is needed for it to be valid), for example:
• Make editnotices visible for mobile users. (this is possible without it being a MediaWiki feature)
• License all new text contributions to Mediawikiwiki under CC0?
• Use the edit filter to block(/warn?) contributions to help pages from mobile editors?
• (suggested by Legoktm) Rely on mw:Template:PD Help Page on the page itself. A number of pages doesn't have this template though. Maybe a bot could help with this? (volunteers?)
Thread on Mediawikiwiki about the subject that was closed for reasons that make no real sense to me. Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 23:12, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

The thread was re-opened, best if we keep discussing there instead of forking. Legoktm (talk) 01:51, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
Is mediawikiwiki open to multi-license all new text contributions to the Help: namespace also under CCO perhaps? Then the standard disclaimer may be able to just be tweaked to say as such? — xaosflux Talk 02:01, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
Legoktm, I agree. I had already reopened the topic once and didn't feel like getting blocked by an abusive admin. That's something I'd rather not experience again. It remains to be seen if the topic isn't just going to be closed again this time, MGChecker isn't an admin either. Xaosflux, I think this may already be the case, but if there's anything in the Help: namespace that isn't supposed to be CC0 please correct me. I just found this in editpage.php: // Allow for site and per-namespace customization of contribution/copyright notice. So apparently it's a possibility, but I don't know how it could be activated. Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 11:25, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
Also saw mw:Manual:Hooks/EditPageCopyrightWarning - so seems like that project should activate that and not try to rely on an edit notice, then their problem is solved? — xaosflux Talk 12:20, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
Xaosflux, seems so, but how is it activated? Can it be activated on-wiki or does it require a configuration change that has to be requested on Phabricator? Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 15:31, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: should be a phab task, an example is phab:T137026, the example usecase is that commonswiki has a different license scheme on their "Data:" namespace. — xaosflux Talk 15:51, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
Xaosflux, thanks, I created phab:T301483, let's see what happens. Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 16:26, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Ukrainian banner

  Resolved.

I see a Ukrainian banner for Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month on fawiki! Is that legitimate? Where is the consensus for lifting a banner like that especially now in the middle of en:2021–2022 Russo-Ukrainian crisis? 4nn1l2 (talk) 00:36, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

Of course it's legitimate. Why wouldn't we focus on preserving Ukrainian culture history? If anything, the attempted destruction of their homeland by a vicious autocrat is more reason to do it. —Justin (koavf)TCM 02:03, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
I'm asking a question: who decides which banners get lifted and in what time? We hold the Picture of the Year (POTY) contest at Commons annually, and each year we really have difficulty lifting a banner for this international competition! See c:User_talk:Firefly#POTY_round_2 for an evidence. All of a sudden, some obscure Ukrainian campaign manages to lift its banner at a critical moment in the middle of an international crisis. This is so strange. Wikipedia should stay away from such PR campaigns co-organized by governments, I believe. 4nn1l2 (talk) 02:15, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
Please tell me more about how you have no idea how these campaigns get chosen but you also seem to know about some secret plot to choose them. —Justin (koavf)TCM 02:30, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
Don't put words into my mouth, please. Either you know how these banners get lifted, in which case please provide a link, or you don't know, in which case I see no point in continuing this discussion with you. Again, I feel extremely surprised seeing this banner at a global level (on Farsi Wikipedia[!]) and so I'm asking a question. 4nn1l2 (talk) 02:37, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
As you can see, this is a recurring annual event that happened at roughly the same time last year. Is your question about who actually sent out the notice? Why this relationship exists? What are you asking exactly? And why is it somehow surprising or shocking that it's a good thing to have information on Ukrainian culture in a Persian-language encyclopedia. Why wouldn't you have this or want this or expect this or demand this (depending on what your "!" above is supposed to represent)? Your entire post is very confusing to me. —Justin (koavf)TCM 04:56, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
@4nn1l2: The request was made at CentralNotice/Request/UCDM 2022. I'm a bit confused by its implementation, since User:ValentynNefedov (WMUA) seemed to imply that fawiki would be excluded from the campaign? If the fawiki community opposes the campaign, I recommend commenting at the CentralNotice request page and adding a link to the local discussion, and I'm sure the CN admins will take it down. @Koavf: The current political/military situation is neither a reason for or against the campaign, which is not related to current events. (Also, I'd like to request that both of you behave a bit more civilly.) --Yair rand (talk) 06:32, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the link. That's all I wanted. 4nn1l2 (talk) 07:53, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
Problem resolved. 4nn1l2 (talk) 08:04, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
Hi, I excluded Persian wiki, because I could not post message on your local village pump. Regarding the whole situation: this is a cruel coincidence that the start of CentralNotice campaign aligned with the actual invasion. We planned this contest way before the situation intencified. Of course, this is up to communities whether the banner is going to be shown or not. I truly do not not how situation will pan out but I will continue coordinate this campaign.--ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 09:36, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

Arrest of Hossein Ronaghi

I have already written here about the plan to cut off the Internet in Iran (Special:diff/21811108) as well as on the Jimbo Wells discussion page about the close cooperation of one of the WM stewards with the technical agents of this action, which unfortunately did not result in anything but my indefinite blocking of the English Wikipedia.

Today, I was informed that Hossein Ronaghi has been abducted by the agents of the Islamic regime due to his open opposition to this plan. User:Hosseinronaghi is not only a prominent wikimedian, but also a staunch opponent of Internet censorship and has spent more than 10 years in prison for it. --IamMM (talk) 16:24, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

@IamMM Not everyone who wears necktie is a Liberal. There are many similarities between FaWiki and the "Islamic regime". Ruwaym (talk) 15:51, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
I condemn any outlaw arrest but I'm sorry I can't feel sympathy with Hossein as a Wikimedian. I don't concider him a liberal, looks like a supportor of another ideology for Iran. Not advocate of Freedom for All. Ruwaym (talk) 15:54, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
