Hello Pathoschild, could you please take a look at the request for a Low Saxon Wikisource? The request is from April (the first request on wikisource.org from pre-language-committee-times even from October 2006). Would be nice, if the project could start some time.

prerequisites for conditional approval
yes. Wikisource is an existing project and a nds language version of it does not yet exist. The proposal is to open a new language edition of an existing Wikimedia project that does not already exist (see the complete list of Wikimedia projects).
yes. The code is nds. The language should have a valid ISO-639 1–3 code (search).
yes. There are Low Saxon Wikipedia, Wiktionary and Wikibooks too. Some people would contest the fact of Low Saxon being sufficiently unique and want to include Low Saxon content on German Wikisource. But they wouldn't accept Low Saxon being used in discussions. And Low Saxon content would be divided, cause only Low Saxon from Germany fits the German Wikisource. Low Saxon from the Netherlands would have to go to the Dutch Wikisource then. The wish to include Low Saxon on German Wikisource is more about territory and politics than language. Even if others won't accord with me about this, it is obvious, that Low Saxon couldn't coexist on the German project, cause it would be restricted to content, other uses of the language wouldn't be accepted. The language must be sufficiently unique that it could not coexist on a more general wiki. In most cases, this excludes regional dialects and different written forms of the same language.
yes. Exact numbers are unknown, but it is still a language spoken by more than a million people. The proposal has a sufficient number of living native speakers to form a viable community and audience. If the proposal is for an artificial language such as Esperanto, it must have a reasonable degree of recognition as determined by discussion.

yes. The test project (on wikisource.org) has more than 400 entries. There is an active test project on the Incubator wiki.
yes. It was translated for the existing Low Saxon Wikipedia. There are localization files available in that language.

The Language proposal policy says: At least five active users must edit that language regularly before a test project will be considered successful. I have to admit, this (five active users ... regularly) is not the case. There are only three contributors to Wikisource who are active Low Saxon contributors until now. But I must say, that this criterion is a very hard one. It is not likely that any project in a lesser-used language will ever met this criterion in short time. Especially if it is about one of the "minor" projects. Wikipedia is well known, but its sister projects are not. Finding contributors for a not-yet-existing and not-well-known project in a lesser-used language is a very, very hard job. So, I hope this will not be considered a neck-breaker for the project by the language subcommittee. The whole thing is about "creating" projects, not preventing them, isn't it? I am sure, the project will develop and grow in the future and shall become a very useful resource. Hi Pathoschild! About Wikipedia in Sassarese language, we've passed 80% of mediawiki software localization (health status "good"), where remain approximately 300 messages in great measure for sysop and exif-; it worked 3 translators and it doesn't appear any obsolete or problematic message. There are always original applicant, although with minor activity seen the traslation work, and others attend the activation of the domain sdc.wikipedia.org. If all the criterias was reached, we might start these holidays.

Hi Pathoschild! I have a few questions before doing a new request for Karakalpak Wikipedia. We've translated more than 65% of interface and created 100 articles. Is is important how many people take part in creating articles or translated? Or how many people minimum must be interested in creation of wiki? In our case now we have only 3 contributors working actively, but I'm sure soon the number of active users increase. I'm doing now promoting works. Hello Atabek. Yes, activity is judged based on many factors including number of regular editors, number of edits, new pages created, amount of content created, and (perhaps the most important) how regular the activity is. We need enough to help ensure that the project won't lose momentum if one of the editors stops editing, and to ensure that there is an administrator and community available at least once daily. As a general rule, three regular editors (making a dozen or so edits per month) is a minimum. —{admin} Pathoschild 01:52:09, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
Hi Pathoschild! I wanted to ask you, what percent of localization messages must be translated before committee finally approves the Wiki? We have already translated 1136 messages of total 1730 (65.7%), also [1] MediaWiki messages (mostly used) is done. Is this translation enough for now, or we should translate some specific group messages, if yes couldn't you call them? Hello. Sorry for the delay. Under the new rules implemented a few days ago, you only need to translate the first category listed on the status page (since this is the first Karakalpak project). Hello OosWesThoesBes. The localization rules have recently been changed; this is good news for most requests (those for first wikis in a language), but unfortunately bad news for requests for subsequent wikis like Limburgish. Under the new rules, second wikis must translate 100% of the messages listed on the status pages.
Fortunately, Limburgish is only missing 6 MediaWiki messages and 288 extension messages, so it's not too bad. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 12:08:50, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

Extremaduran interface

Hi! i've seen you've updated extremaduran status, but.... at the momment, interface is almost translated (there are only 208 untraslated sentences, many of them are translated, but with the word "!!FUZZY!!", and a lot, don't have a translation/i don't know how to translate them (but... well, interface is translated in a 88.78%). It's being discussed now. We must notify the Board of Trustees four days before approval, so it will probably be approved within a week. After that, it depends entirely on the developers who create wikis; since they do it in batches, it can take several weeks before an approved wiki is created. Joining the language subcommittee

Hello M.M.S.. Membership in the language subcommittee requires particular expertise or community involvement, along with a heavy investment of time and effort. Debates can be dozens of pages long, and skipping long discussions will leave you unaware of recent decisions applicable to future discussions. Being a member of the subcommittee typically involves a great deal of debating, work, and discussing with the community and requesting users. After spending a significant portion of your free time doing all this work, you will typically be criticized by requesting users for not doing enough work fast enough. ;)
If you're still interested:
  • Are you active in the community, particularly on Wikimedia mailing lists or otherwise in cross-wiki coordination?
  • Do you have expertise relevant to linguistics, or have knowledge or skills particularly useful to the language subcommittee?
  • Do you have a unique viewpoint, such as being a member of a poorly-represented linguistic culture?
These are some pretty difficult requirements, but there are already a large number of members and work in the language subcommittee can be difficult and intimidating. I'm hoping to mentor people who joined the subcommittee several months ago and became inactive, and get them more active.
These are only suggested requirements, but I don't think you will be appointed without meeting at least one of them. Even if you decide not to apply after all, you are certainly welcome to help us maintain requests for new languages. For example, you can let us know of any requests that can be updated or approved, which will be very helpful in streamlining the process.

An editor is only considered active if they have at least 10 significant edits (not counting trivial edits like correcting a typo); this is why users with less than 10 edits are gray and struck out. Three active editors is generally the absolute minimum acceptable. The only user with more than ten edits in a recent month is not an editor of the test project and cannot read or write Portuguese.

I do like your thoughts (And there is now a new page for the discussion here). My question is I think rather like Larry - just how would you make it work I wonder? Equally I think my skills have changed with the experience I have had on Foundation sites - if I had not had some of those rights would I have gained some of the skills (rhetorical!). I'd almost question the request for "rights" aspect to a degree - recently I've personally seen my recent ones as an "offer to help" rather than anything else. AJAX transclusion table

Hello, I suggest implementing the AJAX transclusion table script. This script adds a "[show]" or "[hide]" link to every row in tables with the "attable" class. Clicking the link will display the linked page below (see screenshots at right). No show/hide link will be shown in rows with no link to an existing local page (like heading rows).

This has several possible uses, such as Requests for new languages/table or User:Pathoschild/AJAX Welcome (translating templates without the need for the reader to download every version). If there's no objection, I'll add the following code to the site JavaScript, which will only call the full code if such a table is found on the page.

The scripts you're referring to (NavFrame and Language select) hide parts of the current page, by adding or removing the CSS "display:none" declaration; browsers download the full text of the page, then make some of it invisible with CSS. The AJAX transclusion table serves a different purpose, dynamically displaying the contents of other pages. It doesn't download anything until the user selects what they want to view, then it downloads only that. This is useful for heavy request pages like Requests for new languages or w:Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, but the same technique can be applied for many other purposes like displaying translations (without downloading every translation available), making lists of templates expandable into examples and documentation, et cetera.
So you can't accurately compare them, since they serve different purposes. That said, the AJAX script has some advantages:
  • Much faster loading: a transclusion table doesn't download any hidden content at all, but instead downloads content on demand. For example, using NavFrame or Language select on Requests for new languages would result in a 230KB page (with perhaps 4% of that actually being read by the user), while the AJAX table results in a 7.3KB page (96% smaller). You can see the difference that makes by visiting Requests for new languages (imagine it has show/hide links), then visiting Requests for new languages/table (imagine same).
  • Flexibility: The AJAX table can display any page on Meta (not only what is on the current page or template). For example, you could have a template with a list of help pages on your user page, so you can click "[show]" beside any page to quickly read it. I've seen templates on enwiki with "quick-reference" links to various templates; the "[show]" links on those templates would display the template with its documentation.
  • Ease-of-use: To create an AJAX transclusion table, you just add class="attable" to any normal table; any rows with links will have a new "[show]" link that displays the content of the row's first link. In contrast, NavFrames are very complicated to use (see example code).

Translation template

Hi, thanks for the template, I have now two things I'd love to see fixed. Give a look to Template:Translation/Fundraising 2007/Thank you. The source page is a subpage, and [edit] link doesn't work well.

Also I think we need to add the second last status, "done" or "ready". Since some translation cannot be to said as published on meta. There we need a status which indicates "proofread done" & "not yet published in its proper space".

Hello Aphaia. Sorry for taking so long to answer; I was away over December, and I have a lot to catch up on.
The edit link wasn't working because the "page" field should be "Fundraising 2007/Thank you", not "Thank you"; it is the full title of the page being translated (the same title you would use to link to it). I corrected and updated the template, so it works now.
A status called "done" would be easy to add, but I'd prefer to keep the number of options to a strict minimum so it's as simple as possible to use for regular editors. I assume you want the page to distinguish between malicious hackers specifically and hackers in general, but the page is written for the average reader who probably isn't aware of the difference between "hacker" and "cracker", but does (more or less) know the meaning of "hacker". Sw-wiki

Hi Patho, saw you popping up at our place. Maybe you have an advice for us: we are a wiki with very few regular contributors. At the moment more or less 4 who are at it regularly and a few poppping up once in a while. We have a whole bunch of people who once strted the project and have since left - either because they lost interest or because they cannot cope any more with the language (I think a number of these smaller wikis was started by non-speakers who just felt there should be something in African languages..). Now, we have a list of people on our sysop list who just don`t show up any more. Better leave them or any way to clean up?

Hello Kipala. Sysop and bureaucrat access are a matter of local consensus, so you can remove access from inactive users if there is a general agreement to do so. One large wiki with this kind of policy is the English Wikisource (see s:Wikisource:Administrators#Confirmation discussions).
Generally, having no active bureaucrat is not a problem until the wiki is much larger. You can hold votes or discussions for access on the wiki, then post a request on Requests for permissions or Requests for bot status. A steward (like myself) who has bureaucrat access on all wikis will do it for you, usually within 24 hours. —{admin} Pathoschild 07:55:58, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Hey Pathoschild, long time no see. I added [[Category:User templates]] to the Template:User language template. I noticed that there are not many templates in these categories so I'm wondering if there is such use for these actual category at all, or maybe your planning to delete these categories in the future? No change was made to the template yet. It seems to have worked for you. It would not work if you tried {{closed|Rogue deletion omg. ~~~}} (without "text=" or "1=") because your signature contains the "=" character, which breaks unnamed parameters.
