Global reminder bot

edit

Can you clarify on whether I need to go through Meta:RfA for this if it would edit only a few times per day or so? It isn't clear on the bots page since that says that it's only required if a bot flag is required. Also do you know what the general practice for this is on other wikis (i.e, those that don't have a clear bot policy themselves)? Leaderboard (talk) 19:06, 22 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

In general, bots should get community acceptance on a project before they are used. This can usually be accomplished on the village pump pages of projects without dedicated bot pages (c.f. International names for Village Pump). Yes, I think you should do a meta:request for bot flag here as well, m-w is fairly low-key on this and many requests will just pass silently. You certainly should not try to unleash bot editing on hundreds of projects that haven't asked for it - that's a good way to start getting lots of blocks. It's a good idea to have a bot flag where you will operate, it helps assure others you ask is approved. If you want to try to run this bot "globally" you will certainly need to go through the steps outlines in Bot_policy#Global bots. — xaosflux Talk 19:25, 22 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Just to be clear, you're suggesting that it's OK to have a bot that wouldn't edit all that much to have the bot flag set anyway? Leaderboard (talk) 06:40, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
It is certainly OK to have a bot flag on a bot that doesn't edit that much. Also note, having a bot flag doesn't require you to assert the bot flag on edits that for some reason shouldn't be flagged bot on recentchanges/watchlists as well. As this is mostly for usertalk keep in mind that you shouldn't use +bot and +minor at the same time or it will supress newtalk notification. — xaosflux Talk 09:30, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Ergo Sum's global interface editor access

edit

Hi, Xaos. I noticed that you granted Ergo Sum global interface editor access. I assume that you meant to add global IPBE instead, as you gave them Meta IPBE too? Thanks, Sdrqaz (talk) 09:46, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Sdrqaz thank you for the note, yes that was my error and it has been corrected. I also went through their global contribs since then to see if there were any communities I needed to follow up with, but don't see any edits over their other access. — xaosflux Talk 09:53, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Bot requests on this project sometimes take a while, this is a low-volume project. In any case, I've closed the task request as accepted now. — xaosflux Talk 09:56, 6 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Template Votings

edit

The template {{Votings}} doesn't seem to work correctly with this election. Would you mind having a look? I've tried a purge action on the template, with no result. Thanks, M/ (talk) 18:38, 13 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Solved with a workaround. The LUA code doesn't understand relative paths. --M/ (talk) 19:19, 13 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Expansion of IP global ban

edit

I refer you to your open proxy global block of this IP. I ask that this block be expanded to a range block as there are other IP's in the range from the same provider that have been used on Wikipedia on the same subjects (see for example here and [1]. I did a WHOIS for the last one and it covers the range that includes the IP you have already globally blocked as an open proxy. See here. Curly Suix (talk) 03:54, 7 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

The entire range doesn't appear to be running open proxies at this time, however your two examples and an adjacent do - 3 more IP's have been blocked there. If it persists within this provider we may need to expand it further in the future. — xaosflux Talk 09:58, 7 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
What about this one?. Right next door to the one you blocked originally. It's been active on the same subjects also. Curly Suix (talk) 03:35, 8 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
I've done a /24 range block now as there are many open proxies on this allocation. — xaosflux Talk 09:54, 8 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

ZScaler blocks, round five

edit

I regret to inform you that your global ZSCALER_PROXY blocks of today have made a huge colateral damage. Unless I missed a development, the consensus among admins has been that the ZScaler service is not an open proxy and that the ranges should only be softblocked in the case of abuse.

For details surrounding the last round of ZScaler hardblocks, please see w:Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive324#zscaler proxies (2020). I'm mostly inactive now so I'm not bothered much, but I think you should reconsider (and submit for review) those blocks. No such user (talk) 13:33, 10 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Need some info about global user page

edit

I am a new Wikipedia user, active on the English, Italian, and Spanish language projects. I am writing to you as a CheckUser, with the hope that you can help me with a technical issue I've encountered.  I tried to create my global user page, but the action was blocked with the following message:

This action has been automatically identified as harmful, and therefore disallowed. If you believe your action was constructive, please inform an administrator of what you were trying to do. A brief description of the abuse rule which your action matched is: Global "ntsamr"-pattern spambot filter

I have been unable to find any information explaining the cause of this block. Not sure if this is due to a lack of necessary user rights for global account creation, an error in my formatting or template usage, or another issue entirely.  I would be grateful if you could provide with help or direct me to the appropriate resources for resolving the issue.

Thank you in advance and happy holidays Bit-Pasta (talk) 22:35, 21 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Bit-Pasta try again. This was mostly related to some phrases you used, which are similar to some phrases that an automated spam program is using. — xaosflux Talk 23:23, 21 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
I see. I used some help to improve the text, will try to make it more personal. Thank you. Bit-Pasta (talk) 08:13, 22 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
