Mailing list directory edit

I have created this as a way to organize all the mailing lists, the talk page of that shows mailing lists that still need to be added to the main page. Lcarsdata 18:26, 19 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Requesting new mailing lists edit

What about requesting a mailing list for another Wikipedia language? Where could we do that? Thanks! TXiKi 16:05, 26 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Another try edit

I have requested twice for a list to be formed at "Bugzilla" with no response. This is another request for the same. Could some one at least respond acknowledging that I have made a request? Be well, Greg Bard 22:34, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

E-mail deliver confirmation edit

Currently I not subscribed to the translators-l. I sent an e-mail to translators-l@lists.wikimedia.org. Is there is a way to check if it was recevied by the members? Teyandee 12:39, 26 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

From its info page there are no much information about posting without being subscribed. But in the first section there a link to its archives, which is public, so you can check by yourself.--SignorX 18:06, 20 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
You may browse the archives and see if the message is there. If it is the message has arrived correctly to the mailing list. —Marco Aurelio (Nihil Prius Fide) 23:32, 21 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

email address visibility edit

I've subscribed some mailing lists, and I have set the option Conceal yourself from subscriber list so that my mail address is not shown in subscriber list ?

But: If I will post some messages, my email address will be visible in the email to other subscribers? And if someone else (not subscriber, and may be even search engines' crawlers) look at the archives (public accessible by web pages), can he/she see my email address? --SignorX 18:17, 20 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

The "conceal yourself..." option is useful when the subscriber list is accessible to the mailing list subscribers. If the option is enabled your email address will not appear on the subscribers list. Mailing list administrators can still see your email address through the administrator interface, though.
Regarding your second and third question: Yes. Once you post a message on the list other members will be able to see your email address and if the mailing list archives are publicy viewable your email will be visible to everyone reading those archives of course. If I remember correctly there's a configuration option in the list (that has to be set by administrators and for all the list) that will remove your email address from postings so nobody in the list can see your email. However I don't know if that has any effect on the archives. Hope this answers your questions. Thanks. —Marco Aurelio (Nihil Prius Fide) 23:30, 21 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ok, thank you very much. So I think I will use a "secondary" email address, if I will get much spam (the address being visible), I will simply discard that address and change to another ;-) --SignorX 20:55, 23 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Experience shows that you don't get any spam from being in those pages. Nemo 07:19, 1 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Get password reminder email edit

I've subscribed some mailing lists, and I have set the option Get password reminder email for this list? ("Once a month, you will get an email containing a password reminder for every list at this host to which you are subscribed. ...") to yes in each of them.

But I get those reminder email only by one of them (WikiIT-l), and nothing by the others (for example: announce-l and by Wikitech-l). --SignorX 18:22, 20 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Even if you set this option on, the list administrators have to enable the feature internaly for that option to work. It's just a checkbox, though. It's set to 'false' by default. Thanks. —Marco Aurelio (Nihil Prius Fide) 23:24, 21 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. (By the way, I think that user option page should point out if that feature is disabled :-( ) --SignorX 20:57, 23 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
You can try to file a bug against mailman if it's not already fixed in version 3 betas. Nemo 07:19, 1 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Spam to list owner edit

I got a lot of spams that are sent directly to list owner, so something like <some list name>-l-owner@lists.wikimedia.org. In fact, over the last few years, there's not a single email sent to the list owner that is not spam. How can I stop emails from sending to the list owner? OhanaUnitedTalk page 01:17, 17 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

You can't. You can go to <https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/admin/list-name/?VARHELP=general/owner> and remove yourself from that email address list, but if you do that then you're not being a list admin and so you should appoint someone else to be a list admin for the mailing list. Which list are we discussing exactly? Do you have spam filters set-up on your list? Is the list owner email address advertised? What is the email address of the senders - is it from <listname>-something@lists.wikimedia.org? I'm going to be sending an email soon to all the list owners, so you will have at least one email that will not be spam. :-) The Helpful One 01:45, 17 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
It's wikispecies mailing list that I'm talking about. As far as I'm awared of, the list owner email was not advertised. As for spam filter, I am not very familiar with the interface so I have no idea. OhanaUnitedTalk page 04:58, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
And now I even get those sent to wikimediaannounce-l-owner, even though I'm not the owner (as far as I know). What's going on? OhanaUnitedTalk page 01:02, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Okay, yes that's very odd, please can you forward me the emails with full headers to thehelpfulonewiki gmail.com? The Helpful One 20:07, 21 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I already junked them, but I'll forward a few to you once I get any (which should be soon). Almost all of these spams are written in Russian (or at least Cyrillic) OhanaUnitedTalk page 04:07, 25 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Alright, got 4 (1 each from wikispecies-l-owner, wikimediahk-owne, wikimedia-ph-owner, and wikimediasr-l-owner). Forwarding now. OhanaUnitedTalk page 15:31, 25 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

It is possible to avoid spam to the listowner by changing the page description, not letting the spambots to simply click and spam. See here for example. I think this is done thru [https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/edithtml/<listname>/listinfo.html. Regards. — MA (audiencia) 20:08, 27 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Canvass policy and notifications on mailing lists edit

There is a discussion on En.Wikipedia of making sure canvassing rules apply to Foundation sponsored mail lists and even if notifications should be allowed at all on such lists. Any thoughts please go to the En.WP canvass discussion. Thanks. Carolmooredc (talk) 16:16, 19 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Your wording is weird. To clarify, that's a discussion on how to apply the canvassing rules on the English Wikipedia in cases related to mailing lists. It's not strictly related to this page, as mailing lists are not affected, but thanks for linking. --Nemo 21:13, 30 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Proposal for a new mailing list : photoreporter edit

A small group of french photographers regularly cover events (sports events, music events, auto shows...) as photoreporter. We developed skills in accreditation process, recommended equipment, recommended settings. We would like to share knowledge, tips on an international level.

Example of subjects of this mailing list:

  • point of view of chapters/foundation:
  • what kind of material do you have ?
  • rent or buy ?
  • who can use it ?
  • insurance
  • sponsors
  • point of view of photographers:
  • how to obtain an accreditation
  • share knowledge, tips about sports photography, concerts photography...
  • tutorials
  • how to recruit photographers ?

To create a mailing list, I need a list of people who are interested by this mailing list:

Thx for your support. I've created a ticket https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54682 Pyb (talk) 15:56, 27 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Licensing edit

Hello. Is content on the mailing list licensed under CC-BY-SA? Can it be posted onwiki? Thanks in advance. PiRSquared17 (talk) 17:50, 2 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

If I understand the copyright-related aspects of the situation correctly, unless the mailing-list software is "closed by default" to messages from new email-addresses, and refuses to post anything for randomPerson@example.com until-and-unless the human behind random.person@example.com has affirmatively clicked a button on some webpage-based click-wrap (or equiv), then the content of all emails is by default copyright all-rights-reserved the human posting. In practice, people cut-n-paste emails and forum-posts and such all the time, out in the wilds of the internet, but since this is wikipedia, where copyleft is our lifeblood, I figured it would be worth getting a solid answer. Is there some kind of mechanism for the mailing-lists, by which the person emailing each message has agreed, to license the contents of their email dual-GFDL-n-CC-BY-SA ... and if not, do we want such a thing? Note that there are raw email-addresses (and sometimes full-realname-and-snail-mail-contact-sigs) in most of the mailing-list emails, and see particularly w:WP:DOX rules which theoretically prevent even linking to these "off-wiki" contents from anywhere on-wiki. 74.192.84.101 12:05, 3 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
I also would like to see this clarified. Blue Rasberry (talk) 14:03, 8 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Are there any subscriber statistics? edit

Are there statistics available for the "number of subscribers" to each list? I can't see anything in the places linked from this page (e.g. it is Not given in https://stats.wikimedia.org/mail-lists/ ), and only list-admins can access the roster for lists like wikimedia-l so I can't just check many of them manually. Architecture of the page edit

I think that a more complete multilanguage page on meta should be provided (current links are to local pages on wikipedia platform, which is quite unusual). This will help maintenance of stats tool, summary tables, etc... and more importantly provide a more complete link when newbies ask for information.--Alexmar983 (talk) 14:33, 16 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Spam Classfication of yahoo.com edit

Hi, my email address is classified as spam via the arbcom-de mailing list, but it isn't seen as spam when emails are sent directly to other arbcom member's email addresses. Why is that and how can i change that? Cheers, --Ghilt (talk) 07:55, 24 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

New list requested edit

Not sure what is the correct procedure (posting to Bugzilla is mentioned above), but I asked for a new list to be created at Phabricator (task T147179), any help would be appreciated. Halibutt (talk) 10:33, 3 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Can't subscribe: 403 Forbidden error upon signing up edit

I tried to subscribe to the mediawiki-api-announce mailing list from https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/mediawiki-api-announce , but upon entering my address and clicking the "Subscribe" button, I was greeted with a 403 Forbidden error. Testing the path from mailing lists to Wikimedia Space edit

Hi, I have just published a proposal to start testing mailing list mirroring and emulation at the Discourse instance we have at Wikimedia Space. If you are interested in discussing and exploring potential post-Mailman scenarios, join in.

Check the proposal. Feedback is welcome there or here.  :)

If you want to propose a mailing list to mirror or you are personally interested in testing mailing list emulation, let's talk. Qgil-WMF (talk) 21:08, 29 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Searching mailing list archives edit

Lists like https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/pywikibot have archives, but are of little use as they are not searchable. I asked on the list and was told by two people:

"Search engine indexing is disabled by default for Wikimedia mailing list archives, and GNU Mailman does not provide a search interface. "

"Use Markmail:https://markmail.org/search/?q=search+list%3Aorg.wikimedia.lists.pywikipedia-l".

While this works, its not advertised anywhere, and seems a poor solution Vicarage (talk) 09:43, 5 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Moderated member edit

I just sent my first email to the wikimedia-l mailing list. However I received the following message:

Is being held until the list moderator can review it for approval.

The message is being held because:

The message comes from a moderated member

Is this normal? Who is a moderated member? 4nn1l2 (talk) 20:20, 29 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yes, on Wikimedia-l it says "New subscribers are initially moderated." Being moderated just means one of the list moderators has to approve your message before it is sent out to everyone. Legoktm (talk) 21:49, 29 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Until when will I (or any new subscriber) be moderated? 4nn1l2 (talk) 04:11, 30 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
That's up to the discretion of the list moderators, you'll want to ask them (they're listed on the same wiki page). Legoktm (talk) 00:29, 1 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Return to "Mailing lists" page.
