Moving pages for WMF departments and teams

Specifically, I propose the following moves:

If I understand correctly, the WMF is divided into "departments", which are then further subdivided into "teams" and sometimes "subteams". There are a few reasons why these pages should be moved:

  • Consistency.
  • Clarity about whether something is a team or department.
  • Avoiding ambiguity with groups from other Wikimedia organizations. For example, WMDE also has a Communications department, if I'm not mistaken.
  • Allowing general pages to be created on some of the vacated spaces. We should have general pages on Wikimedia's Fundraising, Legal issues, and Communications, separate from pages detailing the WMF's teams and departments.

Note also earlier archived proposal to move Fundraising. Pinging @GVarnum-WMF, Seddon (WMF), and Billinghurst: who participated in the earlier proposal discussion. --Yair rand (talk) 19:22, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

@Yair rand: Apologies our proposal on some ways to address some of this has been delayed, I do hope to engage in some discussions in the near future. Some of them relate to helping make it clearer when it's a Foundation maintained page and easier to find things - perhaps utilizing a Foundation specific namespace to take advantage of those built-in features (which addresses easier searching and identification of Foundation maintained materials). However, I think we can start with these changes and continue the conversation. Thanks! --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 04:04, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
(I am uncomfortable with the idea of a group of pages designated as "Foundation-maintained". It's a wiki, pages aren't owned.)
Apparently translated pages can't be moved except by those with Translation admin rights. I'm not sure whether or not that's a bug? --Yair rand (talk) 03:34, 4 July 2019 (UTC)
@Yair rand: I agree that pages are not owned. However, I do believe it is worth noting which pages the Foundation is actively help maintain. Making this clearer is a request I have heard made of the Foundation since my time on AffCom. Today, we sometimes receive requests or complaints related to pages on Meta-Wiki which are about the Foundation, but the Foundation itself has never worked on or in some cases even heard about. Helping maintain every page someone happens to create about the Foundation is simply not possible. The result is people feeling misinformed, misled, or that we are neglecting our duties - which is certainly not our intention. I apologize if my phrasing gave you the wrong impression, but I also appreciate that people have a reasonable expectation of the Foundation maintaining content about ourselves and generally updated by staff or contractors (such as these department pages). Not exclusively maintaining - but at least enough to expect the information to be kept up to date. As we strive towards doing that better, we also want to set clearer expectations on which pages we are able to actively help maintain, and which we hope others will continue to maintain. I hope that helps clarify my statement and offer some context. I cannot speak to the translate admin setup and if that is a bug or a feature, but suspect you can check with folks on its MediaWiki.org talkpage. --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 11:34, 7 July 2019 (UTC)

  • Support move and also Wikimedia Community editorial control of all Meta-Wiki Meta-Wiki is a Wikimedia Community project where the Wikimedia Community has editorial control. Somehow some WMF staffers have gotten the idea that they have veto power over the community editorial process and override community and volunteer edits on Meta-Wiki without any of the normal collaborative process or discussion. This is all a misunderstanding. WMF staffers have no special editorial rights here. If there is to be any exception or allowance, then someone can draft a policy page explaining the authority and limits to make it clear to everyone what the situation is. Part of the lack of clarity is the pages in this list, which like all pages here on meta have the presentation of being Wikimedia Community publications in the community's own voice. Concepts like "legal". "fundraising", "safety" and the rest are concepts of general interest to the Wikimedia community, as the Wikimedia community does all these things independently of the Wikimedia Foundation to its own different interest. The Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Community frequently have conflicting interests, and we are at the point where those differing interests number to conflicts generated by digital process on the scale of thousands. With WMF-pages in particular, some WMF-staffers have a practice of claiming that the WMF have an overriding interest in choosing the content here. Change all these page titles now to make it clear what is about the WMF and what is about community general interest. Also, even where WMF offices and processes are discussed on Meta, the Wikimedia Community asserts all right of editorial control of those pages. The pages on Meta are for what the Wikimedia Community publishes for the benefit of other Wikimedia Community members, and not exclusively for what the Wikimedia Foundation wants the community to believe. If a page needs to be under exclusive control of a WMF staffer then put that on the closed WMF wiki or anyplace similar. Blue Rasberry (talk) 11:55, 24 October 2019 (UTC)

I don't think any discussion is needed; I would've move it myself, but the page has a couple subpages and the target has a history, so an admin is needed to press the button.—Neil P. Quinn-WMF (talk) 13:00, 3 October 2019 (UTC)
