These are the guidelines for project-specific IT Allowance only.

The Wikimedian’s user groups or the communities may apply for this support to procure devices like scanner, camera, tablets, laptop etc. needed to facilitate their work on various projects, based on the following guidelines:

  • All requests for this support should include a detailed plan of the proposed activity, nature of utilization and specific deliverables. This support will be given for the projects having long-term plan, significant free and open knowledge content enrichment and impact on Wikimedia projects.
  • The applicant will need to seek the support from the community on the respective project village pump. After the discussion, at least 5 active community members should support the request. Then the application will be placed in the Project Specific IT allowance of the CIS-A2K request page.
  • We are constrained to limit the number of requests under this category due to limited budgets.
  • Please keep in mind that individuals are not eligible for this support.
  • We strongly encourage you to reach out to the CIS-A2K staff to discuss your plans even before you make an application. We would be glad to assist you with your thinking.

  • What are the Proposed activities?
Hello CIS Team. Hope You all are doing well. I am the founder of Kashmiri Wikimedians User Group, I am here to request equipment support on behalf of the User Group. We were recently recognized by AffCom as a regional user group. To take up the activities, We are requesting a Laptop for the user group. Prior to the recognition, I have used my old laptop, but the laptop is not in a good condition now. A Laptop with a good processor will help us to organize events with ease and document different activities easily with includes documentation of events, report writing etc.
  • What are the Expected impact?
Since there has never been a physical event from Kashmiri Wikipedia, We will be undertaking such events. These equipments will empower the user group to take its activities further, thereby aligning better with the goals of the Wikimedia Foundation. We are hoping to organize some physical events and training sessions as such they would be of utmost importance and help in the development of a small wiki which has been created in 2003 but is laging behind in terms of development.
  • What is the Estimate budget (give it with a detailed break-up)?
We have searched some laptops and it seems APPLE 2020 Macbook Air M1 - (8 GB/256 GB SSD/Mac OS Big Sur) would be a feasible option. Its price is around INR 90K.

Dear @511KeV, I hope you are doing well. Apologies for getting back to you too late, we are aware you made your request a few months ago, however, A2K closed its request page for a few months because A2K had been working on the policies and guidelines of the request page. Now, all the policies and guidelines are updated for respective requests, you can also go through the request page policies once. Also, you can modify your request accordingly and reopen it. I am the founder and Lead of Kashmiri Wikimedians User Group. I contribute to various Wikimedia projects including English Wikipedia, Kashmiri Wikipedia, Meta, Wikidata, Translate wiki and I am also active in Outreach activities and Organizing events and Communications.

  • For what purpose do you need this support:

  • Upcoming three-months plan:

We will be organising the Feminism and Folklore 2023 event for the first time on Kashmiri Wikipedia and after which we would also organise a Kashmir related Edit-a-thon for which Kashmiri Community has shown unanimous support during discussion in VillagePump. This would improve the coverage of Kashmiri related articles on Kashmiri Wikipedia.

We also plan to organise small outreach meetings with College students so that Kashmiri Wikipedia and othe language projects benefit and we get more contributors.

Besides this, I will be personally working on the Vital articles which every Wikipedia should have.

  • Are you a WMF employee, contractor or grantee:

Yes, I was the grantee for few Grant projects related to Kashmiri Wikipedia. One of which was Movement Charter Ambassadors Program for Kashmiri Language.

  • What is proposed under IT Allowance?

Under this support, we are requesting a High end Laptop from the Team for Kashmiri Wikimedians User Group. A high end laptop is requested as it should be able to handle high load tasks eg Video Editing etc. so that we don't have to ask for any more equipments. We have searched some laptops and it seems APPLE 2020 Macbook Air M1 - (8 GB/256 GB SSD/Mac OS Big Sur) or Hp Pavilion 14, 11Th Gen Intel Core I7-16Gb Ram/1Tb seems to meet the requirements.

  • What is the expected output?

Kashmiri Wikipedia lags behind interms of Outreach activities, Only one edit-a-thon organised on this Wikipedia since 2003. We will be undertaking such events. The price of the laptop seems to be around USD1088.34 (90000 INR).

Dear @511KeV, the A2K team has discussed the request which is proposed by the Kashmiri community. Here are a few follow-up questions for it:
  • Firstly, as I mentioned to you and I am mentioning here again that the Project specific IT Allowance tab is for the IT Allowance which is needed for a long-term project. I know we are replying to you lately but there was a lot of discussion over it. Could you please tell us how you proposed the proposal?
  • Secondly, you mentioned that You were the grantee for a few Grant projects related to Kashmiri Wikipedia. Are you still a grantee?
  • You mentioned the particular laptop, is there any reason that you requested that one?
  • Next is who will take care of the support means who will take of the laptop?
  • We also want to ask, do you have any specific plan or proposal for the next few months such as video creation, Photowalk campaign or anything else? We noticed that you mentioned about Wiki Loves Folklore but this proposal seems a general plan, however, this Project Specific IT-Allowance can not be supported. Please go through the policies carefully and work on them.

Here are the clarifications regarding the the questions raised by the A2K team.
  • We are asking for a Laptop to carry out multiple projects. We don't have a long time project for now but multiple short time projects for which the request has been proposed. We are going to conduct an edit a thon (excluding Feminism and Folklore). Creating editing tutorials for Kashmiri Wikipedia.
  • Regarding Grants, As of now, All the projects have be successfully closed and I am not the grantee of any ongoing grant project. I also want to mention that the last grant has some unspent funds which have been approved to be used in future grants. All submitted reports from our side have been accepted.
  • Well the suggested laptops seemed to be decent in configuration, but there is no compulsion in this regards. A laptop with a good processor to take up some video editing projects would be great. From previous project we have learned that video editing requires a laptop with high end specification. The request for high end laptop is made that in future we don't have to ask for another just because of this reason.
  • The laptop would be primarily with me, but will be documented on Kashmiri Wikimedians User Group and Kashmiri Community Resources Page on local Wikipedia so that any user who is taking any project can request this laptop for completion of their project.
  • (1) As of now, We are busy with Feminism and Folklore 2023. (2) After this, We will conduct an online Kashmir related edit-a-thon for which the community has shown unanimous support. The same will be held either from the support of CIS or WMF Rapid grant. (3) Keeping in view the new Vector 2022 skin, we will be taking the second version of the project Creating online resources for Kashmiri Wikipedia to extend Video support for Vector skin 2022 on Kashmiri Wikipedia. We already have some equipments from the previous grant and we may only need a laptop and internet support.

  • What is proposed under IT Allowance?

An advanced book scanner that can scan physical books with readable quality and subsequently can convert it into digital form. This scanner will exclusively be used by Assamese Wikisource community to scan copyright-free resources as well as relicensed books through OTRS.

  • What is the expected output?

We can expect more number of Assamese books in digital format. Currently, we have 30+ books that are ready to be scanned.

  • How the support will help you to enhance your contribution?

The quality and readability of scanned books will be increased and we will be able to add more number of books in Wikisource library. Further, the time consumption will be narrowed down during the process of proofreading, validation and transclusion of a book. Gaining more momentum in the Wikisource activities would be an another advantage.

Dear @Ishanjyotibora, thank you so much for your request. The A2K team discussed the Assamese community request and A2K found that the community is working actively and the community is really enthusiastic. As you know, a few months back A2K published its policies to construct the process obvious and transparent. To keep a stable process, we have a standard procedure for these kinds of tools. We will provide a temporary scanner to the communities to achieve the focused target and then we will issue a permanent device after getting good output. We would request you to commit to approx 50 books to scan within 3 months, so, A2K can review your work report and work on a proper plan for the Assamese Wikisource community.
