Mission edit

Wikimedia communities around the globe create partnerships with organisations who can share both natural and cultural heritage knowledge with the world through (and across) Wikimedia projects. We are forming an international user group to support the shared and global needs of Wikimedians around the world.

The User Group will amplify the impact of local volunteers, affiliates, and GLAM professionals involved in these collaborations. Activities will likely include: advancing the development of technical tools that are needed globally; curating experiences and learning materials from across the world; facilitating world-wide collaborations with like-minded organisations; advocating policy changes within and outside the Wikimedia movement; initiating and supporting relevant research; supporting individuals and communities new to these partnerships; and, improving visibility of our collective impact.

Why now? edit

Increasingly, Wikimedia User groups have been forming throughout the Wikimedia community to facilitate greater collaboration in different contexts. The Wikimedia movement has known a lot of informal exchange and collaboration around GLAM for many years. GLAM initiatives are maturing globally and requests for GLAM-Wiki projects in ‘new’ regions (without local Wikimedia affiliates) appear more frequently. New technical developments like Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons also benefit from organised, international feedback and collaboration within the movement.

The benefits of forming a user group include:

  • Being recognised as a formal entity / affiliate in the Wikimedia movement
  • And therefore officially being part of conversations among the other affiliates (e.g. participation in the Wikimedia Conference)
  • Ability to fundraise or receive grants as a group to advance our global needs
  • Ability to become formal partners in international collaborations with like-minded organisations
  • Being more visible internationally as a global organisation

Scope / Activities edit

How do we define GLAM? edit

GLAM refers to organisations in the cultural heritage sector, sometimes called 'collecting' or 'memory' institutions. It is an acroymn for Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums. But in this context this term does include any organisation that:

  1. shares Wikimedia’s values of knowledge sharing and openness
  2. can act as a partner for the Wikimedia movement in improving public knowledge about the world’s heritage (both natural and cultural).

This explicitly includes organisations like zoos, broadcasting organisations, contemporary art centers, performing arts initiatives, universities, botanical gardens, local heritage associations, corporate archives, etc. The community of practice that supports partnerships with these organisations share best-practices for integrating professional expertise/references into Wikimedia projects (e.g. through Wikipedian in Residence, editathons and training workshops) sharing digital media and metadata (e.g. bulk uploads to Commons & Wikidata respectively) and other kinds of knowledge curated by these institutions (many of these tactics can be found here).

Relationship with other affiliates edit

The user group is designed to complement and strengthen local GLAM-Wiki activities, and does not replace them.

GLAM activities across the movement must primarily continue to be initiated, managed and owned by local Wikimedia affiliates. The user group intends to fill the gaps by e.g. acting as a point of contact for those collaborations where no local Wikimedia affiliate exist yet, and by supporting and advocating for activities, advocacy and infrastructure that have a broader than local/national scope and that can’t be dealt with by local affiliates.

Activities edit

We expect the user group to facilitate global conversations and support for:

  • Advancing the development of technical tools that are needed globally: identifying and prioritising the types of tools that are needed among GLAM-Wiki initiatives internationally. Initiating, fundraising for, and supporting tool development and management. Making sure that the tools are future proof and stay up to date.
  • Curating experiences and learning materials from across the world:
    • Creating and maintaining efficient international communication channels about GLAM-Wiki collaborations, both internally within the Wikimedia movement and towards external parties learning materials, case studies and best practices (e.g. improvements to the current GLAM-Wiki portal on outreach.wikimedia.org)
    • Identifying and advising about international needs for GLAM-Wiki related gatherings, meetings and events around specific topics (which are preferably organised by local affiliates)
  • Facilitating world-wide collaborations
    • Partnerships with global GLAM umbrella organisations
    • Promoting the international GLAM-Wiki community at international events and with international GLAM umbrella organisations
    • Act as an introductory point of contact for GLAM-Wiki requests that concern regions/areas where no Wikimedia affiliates are active yet.
  • Advocating policy changes within and outside the Wikimedia movement -- such as policy platforms for GLAM communities in their local contexts.
  • Initiating and supporting relevant research -- Facilitating, mentoring and coordinating research on Wikimedia and GLAM with global scope and for those regions/areas where no local affiliates are active
  • Supporting individuals and communities new to these partnerships
  • Improving visibility of our collective impact
    • developing a shared understanding of best evaluation practices
    • promoting that impact within the Wikimedia movement.

What we are not edit

  • This User Group is not a replacement for local communities working with their own cultural institutions; nor does it supersede or compete with the GLAM-specific programs of Wikimedia Chapters/User Groups.
  • It does not provide accreditation or 'approval' of new GLAM-Wiki partnerships, events, Wikipedians in Residence, or the formation of future user-groups with GLAM in their scope.

Who should participate edit

The group is facilitating and supporting a broad range of improvements to the global GLAM-Wiki community. We recommend individuals join the group, whether or not they are part of an affiliate, if you are interested in:

  • Supporting the international GLAM-Wiki community
  • Advising or learning from GLAM-Wiki practitioners around the world
  • Joining a working group within this user group, for working on the activities similar to the ones described above
