Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitions

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.

I'm notifying you because you participated in one of several relevant discussions. -Pete F (talk) 22:22, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Aanmelding

Mvg, Taketa (talk) 11:11, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

37.144.145.16

Will you look, please, at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/37.144.145.16 That seems to be a destructive bot. What do you think about it? How to deal with it? Domitori (talk) 04:21, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi Domitori, you asked this question on a dozen userpages. Someone has replied on your talk page. I will leave it to them. If you need any further assistance, feel free to ask me again. All the best, Taketa (talk) 15:25, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
Yes. I am asked about my opinions about candidates for the steward position, and I try to form my own opinion, using the simple examples.
If you dislike the wikimedia commons, you may consider the example below from the Russian version of Wikisource.
This time, the bot is handled by the registered user Lozman, who removes the text of the following authors:
https://ru.wikisource.org/wiki/Леонард_Борисович_Терновский
https://ru.wikisource.org/wiki/Софья_Васильевна_Каллистратова
https://ru.wikisource.org/wiki/Александр_Павлович_Тимофеевский
The texts are moved to some strange site http://wikilivres.ru
There, the user with the same nick Lozman removes them with pretext of violation of the copyright
(the licenses from Wikisource are not transferred to that site).
You may look for the example at
What do you think about this? Domitori (talk) 13:46, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
Hi Domitori, ah like that. Yes that is understandable that you post the question to a dozen user pages if you want to know more about the candidates. In that case you can find the question page here. That makes it easier for other people to see the questions and also take them into consideration. Also I feel I should mention that according to the eligibility tool you are not actually eligible to vote in this years steward election, because you did not make 50 edits between 1 August 2014 and 31 January 2015, so you might save yourself alot of time here. Just thought I should mention it. All the best, Taketa (talk) 05:11, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

Congratulations!

Hello Taketa,

On behalf of the stewards' election committee, congratulations on your election as a steward! Your permissions have now been set and you are able to start working.

You have been added to the list of stewards and the stewards' chart. Please take a moment to check that your details are accurate and update them if necessary.

You have been given access to the mailing lists related to your steward duties, which include: checkuser-l, the private mailing list for Wikimedia checkusers, stewards-l, the private list for stewards. In addition, you have been or will be given access to the related private wikis, one for checkusers and the other solely for stewards, details of which will be provided.

If you use IRC, you will be given access to several channels, including #wikimedia-checkuserconnect and #wikimedia-privacyconnect. Please also idle in #wikimedia-stewardsconnect when you are available for duty.

Best of luck with your new tools; I am sure you will do a fantastic job. Please remember that your fellow stewards are always available if you need a second opinion, either via the mailing list or on IRC.

Rename Fedor to Amphioxys

Hi Taketa! Regarding this discussion, will it still be possible to have all my different users on the different wiki-sites renamed from Fedor (and others) to Amphioxys? Cheers! Aelurid (talk) 17:44, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi Aelurid, the name Amphioxys is taken. If this is you, please log in to Amphioxys and put a message on your talkpage confirming this. If this is you I can rename you to this name. If this is not you you will need to pick a new name. In order to rename I will need to know the names of all the accounts you want renamed and the languages they are on. Please log into your accounts and post a confirmation on your talkpages, and provide me with links to these edits. A global account like "Fedor" all you have to do is log into 1 of your accounts and confirm to confirm all. Let me know if you have any questions and I look forward to hearing from you soon. All the best, Taketa (talk) 18:50, 15 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks! Could you tell me where is it taken other than on French Wiktionary, as I already wrote on Keegan's page? Thanks in advance! Aelurid (talk) 15:48, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
Hi Aelurid, it is taken on fr.wikipedia. See [6]. Sincerely, Taketa (talk) 19:20, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
I already changed the page of the French wiktionary page to reflect my user. I do not know the user at the Finnish wikipedia, but this person made three changes over a period of three years and has not done anything since 2015. Doesn't sound like a very serious user to me... :-( Aelurid (talk) 19:49, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
Hi Aelurid, once I have a list of your accounts, and confirmed their IDs I can ask fi.wiki Amphioxys whether they object a rename. If they do not respond within a week, you can usurp the name. If they object, you will have to pick a new name. Cheers, Taketa (talk) 20:25, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks a million! I will try to list all my accounts here and keep my fingers crossed... Aelurid (talk) 17:39, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi Amphioxys, I have renamed "Fedor" and "Amphioxys~frwiktionary". Please go to Special:MergeAccount to merge your accounts. "Aelurid" at meta cannot be renamed, because Amphioxys already has edits at meta. We do not have a tool to merge two accounts on a single project. We can only add accounts from different projects to one global account. Please also log into the "Amphioxys~~frwiktionary2" account (with your "Amphioxys" password), and go to Special:MergeAccount to make sure the rename does not leave any unmerged local accounts. Rename

Hi, could you assist with my merge request here? You did a similar one for User:Carcharoth and it'd be easier for you. Regards NQ (talk) 04:37, 23 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi NQ, I will have a look. All the best, Taketa (talk) 04:52, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
Thank you very much for the quick response! Everything works great. You can go ahead and delete the NQ-de@global account. NQ (talk) 05:03, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
Hi NQ, I cannot delete the account. Please unify de.wikipedia "NQ-de" account with the global acocunt, in order to make sure the rename is clean and doesn't leave any loose local accounts. Afterwards you can abandon the account. All the best, Taketa (talk) 05:08, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
Done, thanks. NQ (talk) 05:12, 23 April 2015 (UTC)

Unblock Request

Hi Taketa, thanks for responding at meta:Steward requests/Global. I am having trouble asking for an ip-block exemption on English Wikipedia. The page you linked to suggested two options: 1) copy a request template to the bottom of my talk page; 2)use the Unblock Ticket Request System. I have problems with both options: 1) I am unable to edit my talk page due to the IP block, so I cannot paste the request template; 2)when I attempt to fill out the Unblock Ticket Request System form the system says "The username you entered is not currently blocked" and won't let me submit my form (because my username isn't blocked, but my IP is). I am unsure how to proceed, could you please help? Thanks.

Hi Natalyakautz, Vituzzu has informed the English admins. See [7]. Sincerely, Taketa (talk) 21:50, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for your help!

Character limit on candidate presentation

Greetings, your current statement in your board candidate presentation appears to be 38 characters over the 1200 character (without spaces) limit. Right now, we would need to remove the last line before we can send the statement in for translation. Please consider shortening it. Thank you --Varnent (talk)(COI) 02:05, 5 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi Varnent, thank you for the note. I have edited the text and removed 40 characters. Sincerely, Taketa (talk) 04:36, 5 May 2015 (UTC)

If not, please email me a revised response for priorities; but if I don't hear from you, I'll assume it's fine as it is. Tony (talk) 07:59, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
Hi Tony, I noticed it. Yes, the blank is 10. All the best, Taketa (talk) 14:02, 12 May 2015 (UTC)

Reflections on Wikipedia

Hello Taketa, I have voted for you as a board member. I am a regular user who contributed pages recently. I was very disappointed by the fact that some administrators suppressed some pages with generic justifications such as absence of independent sources or non-relevance. On the contrary, I feel that I have followed Wiki rules in identifying for each several independent sources justifying relevance such as independent prizes or achievements like elections. I have also noted that some linguistic versions cancel persons or organisations which are not national, whilst I tried to promote the international dimension of Wikipedia. The consequence is that pages I had written after quality research were cancelled, thus impoverishing Wikipedia. I use it regularly and I feel that Wikipedia should have the most pages possible. Administrators should be not be “rewarded” or take pride in the number of pages they have cancelled (as I feel it is the current trend), but on the number which they have created or – even better - improved. This is what helps volunteers and contributors to do more and better. --Bettylella (talk) 08:34, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

Dear Bettylella, thank you for your support. I am sorry to hear about your experience while trying to improve Wikipedia. When I have a disagreement, I always try to find more people to talk to. It is usefull to discuss matters in a larger group of people who are interested in the same topic. Administrators do their work with the best intentions, but they simply follow the guidelines we have all agreed on. If you want to get something done, there is always room to talk about guidelines and specific cases. I can only advice to look for other people to discuss this matter with. And even when the end result may not be in agreement with your personal opinion, it is better to accept the opinion of a group, then to be in a disagreement with a single person. We have guidelines because it is important for an encyclopedia to have some limits. Many topics have alot of information, and we limit ourselves to present a summary. Also there are as many topics as we can think of, and we limit ourselves to topics that have alot of reliable sources. This limit is however not set in stone, and always open to discussion. I see many administrators who do an awsome job. It is up to us, to thank the people who are doing a good job. If we choose to thank people for saving an article, then this will encourage more hard work. I encourage everyone to publicly support people who do a good job. Because that is the best way to move forward. Sincerely, Taketa (talk) 09:32, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

Congratulations

Taketa, While you weren't elected to the Board, I appreciated your thoughtful input and congratulate you on the support you received. I hope you are involved in strategy and governance efforts in the coming years. Warmly, SJ talk  18:09, 6 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi Sj, thank you for the nice message. Though not elected, I like the results. I for one, will definitely keep working hard. Currently efforts are towards getting a fellow Wikimedian knighted (which would mean government recognition of Wikimedia work as full volunteer work and will get us lots of new editors), and starting local Wikimedia work groups at all universities in the Netherlands for and by students (which will mean new long term editors). Not to mention working on the Wikiversity Journal of Medicine, Wikidata Images and as a new steward. So I will be busy :). All the best, Taketa (talk) 00:02, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

Optimisme

Beste Taketa,

Richardkiwi - Richardkiwi (talk) 15:07, 15 June 2015 (UTC)

Vriendelijke groet, - Richardkw (talk) 15:33, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

This is a message from the Wikimedia Foundation. Translations are available.

As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are beginning the transition to the new policy.

An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.

The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that anyone with access to nonpublic information sign the new confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain their access. You are receiving this email because you have access to nonpublic information and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy.

Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. The general confidentiality agreement is now ready, and the OTRS agreement will be ready after 22 September 2015. We have prepared a guide on Meta-Wiki to help you create your Phabricator account and sign the new agreement: Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information/How to sign

If you have any questions or experience any problems while signing the new agreement, please visit this talk page or email me (gvarnum wikimedia.org). Again, please sign this confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain your access to nonpublic information. If you do not wish to retain this access, please let me know and we will forward your request to the appropriate individuals.

Thank you,
Gregory Varnum (User:GVarnum-WMF), Wikimedia Foundation

You are receiving this email because you have been identified as an OTRS volunteer and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy. If you do not sign the new confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015, you will lose your OTRS access. OTRS volunteers have a specific agreement available, if you have recently signed the general confidentiality agreement for another role (such as CheckUser or Oversight), you do not need to sign the general agreement again, but you will still need to sign the OTRS agreement.

Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. We have prepared a guide on Meta-Wiki to help you create your Phabricator account and sign the new agreement: Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information/How to sign
