Rename Drow male (maybe I have a problem... or not)

edit
  Resolved.

Hi!

I've just receive your message. I created (several years ago) four accounts in Wikimedia projects:

I am not sure if the misterious another Drow male is my account in Wikimedia Commons, in which case, I suggest a union of those accounts if those name is a problem. I don't know if is it possible.

If I have to choose one of those names, I'd prefer Drow male. --Drow male (talk) 23:50, 19 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Sorry. The link of your message was this.
@Drow male: once finalization is complete stewards will have a tool that will be able to merge your old, separate account into the one you actually use. This will be available within a couple of months and you can request it then. Until that time, if you still have access to those accounts please log in with each and visit Special:MergeAccount on each project to make sure they are all unified. Thanks. Kontenvereinigung nach Umbenennung.

edit

Hallo Keegan,

Rabend1 (talk) 23:56, 19 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Unwanted account renaming

  Resolved.

Keegan,

Someone stole my j8 account and has caused it to be renamed without notice and without my agreement. Would you please revert the account ownership and assign all wikimedia j8 accounts to me.

I have had this account for many years and use j8 as my username in other places as well.

Thank you,

j8

Account clash and renaming

edit
  Resolved.

Dear Keegan,

Thanks for the notice you left on my English wikipedia talk page. I looked up on this issue and it appears that the clashing "Laforet" was an account from ja.wikipedia.org that has been abandoned and actually banned since 2007. I understand the need for unified login, however I am not planning to give up my user name under circumstances like this. Is there a way for me to contest the ownership of my handle, given the fact that the other party is very unlikely to agree to merge the accounts?

With regards Laforet 130.216.146.251 02:52, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi Laforet, The only chance to takeover that global account is usurpation. But there is no policy defined yet but you can file a request at m:SRUC, Currently it is handled on case by case basis--Shanmugamp7 (talk) 10:37, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

en:User:Salv

edit
  Resolved.

Hi, there! I'm Salvidrim, admin on enwiki. I just found out that one of my doppelgangers, "Salv", (often used as a shortened version of my actual username) is in danger of being renamed. Since it is used as a shortcut and to prevent impersonation, obviously we can't have that. It appears that someone else used the same username on other projects back in 2008. They apparently "own" the SUL since March 17th, 2015, which was clearly some automated process assigning the SUL to the oldest account. Since I am active and they are not, I would like to lay claim to the "Salv" global account, and see THEIR unattached accounts renamed. Otherwise it seems silly to wait for both mine and their accounts to be renamed only to allow me to THEN re-register the "Salv" global account under my ownership by being renamed automatically locally from "Salv" to "Salv~enwiki" and then requesting a global rename back to "Salv".

Thanks for your guidance and assistance in this matter, I know you have a lot on your plate. :) Salvidrim! 02:56, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Salvidrim: for the sake of sanity and clarity, I do think it would be best if we're silly and wait for dust to settle. There's renewed interest in getting the global usurpation policy amended and finally passed which will clear up who should rightfully "own" an account by community standards. Right now that is an ambiguous policy, so renaming is following the norm :/ I urge you to participate in the discussion about usurpation. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 05:34, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
From a purely technical viewpoint, local admins (at least on enwiki) can currently create accounts while bypassing normal errors (such as "too similar", which happened with Salv due to another account named SAL-V). Am I correct in assuming local admins will no longer be able to create local accounts of the same name as an existing global account? Salvidrim! 05:42, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
You are correct about your assumption. Since about a month ago, all new accounts are global. Creating a local only account that clashes with a global name is disabled. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 06:25, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

ro:User:Silenzio76 and ro:User:Silenzio

  Resolved.

Hello Keegan, I am here to bother you, as well, with an account renaming. I have created my first account at the end of March 2007, ro:User:Silenzio, but as I couldn't make it global, because there was another Finnish account with the same nickname, I have decided to get rid of it and I have created another account ro:User:Silenzio76 which is global, and in the mean time I have became an admin at ro.wp, under this name. As I was notified by you, that now my old account name is available for global use, my question is: is it possible to rename my global account Silenzio 76, in Silenzio? Thank you in advance for your response. Cheers, Silenzio76 (talk) 03:36, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi Silenzio76, I think you understood it in wrong way. per Special:CentralAuth/Silenzio, the Finnish user has the global account Silenzio, so your account at ro wiki will be renamed to Silenzio~rowiki , if you would like to choose different name you can file a request --Shanmugamp7 (talk) 06:22, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
To clarify, your old account will be renamed. You're welcome to continue on as ro:User:Silenzio76. Once this is all finalized the stewards will have a tool which can merge your old account to the new if you want. If not, you can disregard. Thanks, Shanmugamp7 :) Keegan (WMF) (talk) 06:28, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Another name change issue

edit
  Resolved.

I also got a notice that my name was to be changed.

I have been using this name since August 8th, 2003. As best as I can determine, the other user started using the account on February (veljače) 7, 2011, meaning I have been a member for 8 years longer than this other person. Why should I have to give up my name?

I guess global account is created based on edit count. Obviously that hr wiki account has 27 edits more than yours. @Keegan: Correct me if i am wrong.--Shanmugamp7 (talk) 06:12, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
You are correct. Unfortunately there is nothing I can do, by edits the account owns the name. Due to the age of accounts in our database, many pre-2004 do not have a registration date. Therefore, it is an unreliable method of determining who gets an account and edits take precedence over age. Account age can't be the determining factor, because it's not always right :(
This renaming is a technical solution. If accounts are able to agree with each other, or policies are created or existing ones follow that allow for account supremacy, I defer to the community. Otherwise, this is the unfortunate outcome for some. I'm quite sorry, there's no emoticon for the sad face every time I have to write this. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 06:21, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Message about losing account name

edit
  Resolved.

Hello -

Tonight I received a note that I would be losing my longtime name, Tmd (since 2006) as someone else is also using it, and I would be renamed. As far as I can tell, the other user(s) started their accounts after me, so I'm unsure why I should have to lose this name, which while I don't use to edit on a daily basis, is one I've had for a considerable amount of time. Is there any way that this can not happen for my account? Thank you.

As you can see here, there is a global account. So as part of Single User Login finalisation, your account will be renamed, we cant do anything about that. if you would like to rename your account to the name you like please file a request--Shanmugamp7 (talk) 06:06, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

I don't want to be renamed because of it, please let me stay "Annenkov" everywere. Thanks. --Annenkov

Hi Annenkov, Don't worry, you are the owner of the global account, so you will not be renamed. That particular fr wiki account will only be renamed. Regards --Shanmugamp7 (talk) 08:21, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Rename notice for indefinitely blocked account on Simple English Wikipedia

  Resolved.

Hello, Keegan. I am an administrator on Simple English Wikipedia. I saw that MediaWiki message delivery left a message on your behalf at simple:User talk:FDR, saying that that user would be renamed. That account is currently blocked indefinitely for sock puppetry. When it is renamed, will the current block be carried forward to the new account, or will we need to take action to block the new account? When will this renaming happen? Renaming of User:BornToBe

edit
  Resolved.

Hello,

I received an message from you stating that the account User:BornToBe will be renamed soon.

I am surprised, because I use another global account, User:Daehan. Actually, when I followed the link from my email, I was checking the message being connected to User:Daehan.

User:BornToBe seems to have been created the 16th of march and only has one modification on thai wikipedia. I didn't created this account, and am really surprised because BornToBe is an account name I use for other websites aswell... I'd like to be sure that there hasn't been any pirating action and most importantly, that my account User:Daehan will remain.

Thank you very much for confirming that and best regards, --Daehan (talk) 09:16, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Daehan: There is "BornToBe" account on fr.wikipedia that is not attached to the global account for BornToBe. This is why a message was sent as it will have to be attached (if the same person owns the global account and the fr.wikipedia account) or renamed. If you received the message to your email address it would seem that you own the BornToBe fr.wikipedia account. If you don't use it, and don't own the global BornToBe account then no action is needed. The account Daehan is not affected and will not be renamed. QuiteUnusual (talk) 10:16, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
@QuiteUnusual:, thank you for your explanation. There is indeed no need to create another one for French language: just attach it the the main one you identified. Regards, --Daehan (talk) 11:38, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Cnbrb

edit
  Resolved.
Hello Keegan
Re. your message to rename my account - this doesn't really make sense. I hold two logins for English Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, both named Cnbrb - they are both me. The stated aim in the announcement is that "users must have the same account name everywhere", which is fine, as I already have the same account name, except now you are going to force me to have two account names instead! Have you really thought this through?? Wouldn't it be more sensible simply to merge my two accounts? Renaming Wikimedia accounts is going to cause all sorts of problems - not least how you retrospectively reassign irrevocable CC licences to my new name. Cnbrb
P.S. I looked at Special:MergeAccount and it states that "The accounts named "Cnbrb" on each of the following sites have been automatically attached to the unified account:
  • commons.wikimedia.org
  • en.wikipedia.org
  • www.mediawiki.org"
So why must my account be renamed if they have been merged already? Can anyone please explain this bizarre move?
P.P.S I can't log into Wikimedia - ironically I would have to create yet another account in the same name to reply to you with anything other than an IP address. - Cnbrb (86.179.182.41 10:39, 20 March 2015 (UTC))Reply
Hi Cnbrb, Now you are the owner of the global account, so it will not be renamed. but as you can see here there are many unattached accounts (this is why you are not able to login in meta), they will be renamed so that you can use your account on all Wikimedia wiki's.--Shanmugamp7 (talk) 10:44, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Renaming

edit

Hello Keegan,

My username in Wikipedia Commons, Wikibooks and fr & en Wiktionary is also Christian Lassure while my username in WP fr and WP en is only Elnon. I wish to retain the use of username Christian Lassure as well as that of Elnon in the first four wikis mentioned above. Is that feasable ? --Elnon (talk) 11:52, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Elnon: it looks like it will not work out for you to keep using Christian Lassure on the French and English WIkipedias if you do not own the global account attached on the French Wiktionary. You do own all of the Elnon accounts, so it would probably be best if you allow your Christian Lassure accounts to be renamed and then in a couple of months stewards will have a tool to merge differently-named accounts to move your Lassure accounts into your Elnon account. All of your contributions will be moved to your new name.. You'll just have to file a request here on meta when it becomes available after username finalization is finished. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 04:40, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, Keegan, for the info. It's alright then, I suppose, if my Lassure accounts are renamed to Elnon. --Elnon (talk) 10:51, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Unexpected message

edit
  Resolved.

Hi, I received an unexpected email, apparently from you, warning me that the account User:Turnstile on the Simple Wikipedia was involved in a name clash and would be renamed. It was unexpected because Turnstile is not my account on any Wikipedia website as far as I am aware. A quick look indicates that the account was created in 2008 and has made no contributions to Simple. However it does appear to have my email address associated with it. As it is not my account and has no contributions, I do not care about the renaming one way or the other and would be quite happy to see it deleted. However there is something odd going on so I thought that you should be made aware. -- Derek Ross (talk)

Thanks, I appreciate the notice.

Change of my user name

edit
  Resolved.

Hello,

Like many others, I've been warned that my accounts would have to be renamed.

I've had an account as "Toh" on fr.wikipedia.org for almost 10 years now, but I understand I'll have to loose it, because another "Toh" has been more active than me on en.wikipedia.org and has already attached his account to the global "Toh" account.
OK for this one (I'm sad anyway)... :-(

Some months (years?) ago, I therefore created another account, "Toh-fr", which I began to use on other sites where I could not log in as "Toh" anymore.
I think I'm the only one to own "Toh-fr", and I thought it was already a global account.
BUT what puzzles me is that I have received a message on en.wikipedia.org telling me that I also have to rename "Toh-fr"...

My questions are :

  • Can I keep my new "Toh-fr" account, as is, on all Wikimedia sites?
  • How can I merge my old "Toh" account (and its editing history on fr.wikipedia.org) into my new "Toh-fr" account?

Thanks in advance for your answers...

Best regards, Toh (talk) 15:19, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Toh-fr: You received the message about Toh-fr because the account was not unified. As you have now merged the account successfully it will not be renamed. At the moment we cannot merge Toh on the French Wikipedia into Toh-fr. However, once the SUL finalisation is complete, Stewards will be able to do this. Name change for Svartalf... what's up?

Dear sir

I just received a notification that my nick on wiki fr will be changed because of a conflict, presumably with the wiki en poster of the same name, but I am the same person as the more active wiki en poster Svartalf. Moreover, I discussed the matter with French admin Esprit Fugace who confirmed this was a mistake and that the fact both users having the same e mail addy made the point moot. why should my account in one language change names and not the other? what can be done about it? Yours truly. Svartalf (talk) 16:40, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Svartalf: When the message was sent the accounts were not linked as a Single Unified Login, so we did not know they were for the same person. As you have now linked them there will be no renaming. Renaming Username Pianola at Commons

There is obviously a commons account with the name pianola with seems to clash with my account. In my opinion this is not the case. As far as I remember I used always the username Gerhard51 but I remember a talk years ago with my friend Rex Lawson where he mentioned that another user with the same name is blocking him to use the commons as user:pianola. If there might be any connections to be found with my user account it could be deleted to give way to use Rex Lawson "Pianola" properly. Do not hesitate to send me another mail if I can be of help. Kind regards Gerhard51 (talk) 17:24, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Gerhard51: you might have received a notice by mistake? In any case your account is not going to be renamed. As for your request, the English Pianola account owns the global name which means that the Commons account will be renamed in mid-April. Without having to do anything, the English Pianola account will be able to click over to Commons and automatically be Pianola there. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 00:51, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

So, i would like an english wikipedia bureaucrat to rename the english "Io" and let me keep the global account. The main reason i want to keep the name "Io" is the fact that i have around 200 students who have links to my account on there user pages. I am a teacher and researcher at Paris Ouest university and i teach to students how to use wikipedia. You can learn more about me on this page https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lionel_Barbe So i contact this bureaucrat and left him a message : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Rschen7754 Unfortunatly, this bureaucrat seems to have not connected since the 15 march, so he didnt see my messages. Please could you se if my request can be accepted ? Best regards, Io https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utilisateur:Io

Hi there. Bureaucrats can no longer perform local renames, you can have it all looked in to at SRUC here on Meta. I am not sure if they will be able to fulfill your request or not; you might be able to get assistance in having a bot change the links on your students' pages for you if need be. I think something is wrong--KTo288 (talk) 21:41, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

@KTo288: sorry for the confusion, the script briefly followed redirects to talk pages, in your case it was from User:KTo228. Your account is not going to be renamed. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 00:17, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Okay thanks, KTo228 is me to, again both on Commons and generally, I registered that name for use away from base, and when I wanted to edit with my admin and extended permissions turned off on wikinews. I haven't used it in a while and I've forgotten the password, but its chief use for me now is to prevent impersonation of my account. As long as my main account is safe from being renamed I'll be happy. --KTo288 (talk) 01:01, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Cannot see why my account (Halloleo) has to be renamed

edit
  Resolved.

Hi Keegan

You left a message on my page at Wikimedia Commons that my account has to be renamed. But why? When I look at Central Auth for Halloleo I can see that at least 5 out of the 6 accounts listed belong really to me.

What can I do to propose that I keep the name Halloleo as unified name for all these 5 accounts?

Many thanks, Leo

Hi there, you will no longer have your account(s) renamed. When you logged in to Commons earlier, your account was unified by password. Thanks, sorry for the trouble. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 01:31, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Renaming my account (Pikachu)?

edit

Why is it that my account has to be renamed to Pikachu~enwiki? I like it the way it is. Why not rename the German account holder and let me keep using this one? 2605:A601:557:C201:EC06:53A8:A73F:CB31 02:46, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi there. The German account has made over a hundred edits, made an edit as recently as 2013, and was registered at some point prior to 2004, as the account is too old to have a creation log. At the time of notification, your account had no edits and was registered in 2008. Since there can only be one Pikachu, the German account owns the global name and your account will have to be renamed. I'm quite sorry about that, but you do have the option to choose a different name of your liking. You could be A Wild Pikachu, The Real Pikachu, whatever you would like. Just go here for a simple form: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:GlobalRenameRequest Keegan (WMF) (talk) 03:32, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
What if I make more edits than the German account has before the rename deadline? I've been going through this and this, trying to find the official rules for which account takes precedent, but without a lot of luck so far. The German account hasn't edited in over two years, but somehow came out of the woodwork to get the global name attached three days ago? Without even having anything posted on that user's talk page in 2.5 years? How do I go about leapfrogging the German account for account name precedence? 2605:A601:557:C201:EC06:53A8:A73F:CB31 03:57, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
The rules are posted here. The German account did not come out of the woodwork, it was attached by script. There's no global or community measure of what an "inactive" account is, so the time of last edit cannot be taken into account. You can't leapfrog the German account for precedence. Unfortunately, your account will be renamed. Stewards and/or global renamers may override the rules by following community policies that may trump the rules, but I don't think that there any that apply in such a case where an account is so well established. You are welcome to ask, though, at SRUC. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 04:16, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Interesting. Had I known about the impending script, I would've logged 150 edits to make sure I got it. E-mails should have been sent out. That's water under the bridge at this point, though. I'm pretty familiar with WP:CHU and WP:USURP on enwiki, and I know that accounts with more than 148 (the edit count of the German account) have been usurped in the past. Here's one that was done less than a year ago. I know bureaucrats lost the ability to do renames some time ago, but I'll talk to a enwiki bureaucrat who is also a steward, like MBisanz, and see if he thinks there's a possibility I can be the one that keeps the name. 2605:A601:557:C201:EC06:53A8:A73F:CB31 04:49, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your patience and understanding. Global renamers and stewards are certainly free to make their decisions above the rules as long as it's within community policy(ies). Keegan (WMF) (talk) 05:41, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

edit

Hello. Please, rename the account on eswiki (it's inactive from 2012), not mine. An entry on ruwiki is mine too. Thanks. --Deireadh 02:54, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi there. The Spanish account had more edits, as well as an older registration date, than your account or accounts did at the time of notification. There is no inactivity policy for accounts so yours must be renamed. You can request a new name for your account, or file an appeal to usurp the account at SRUC. The rename request form is here: https://ru.wikpedia.org/wiki/Special:GlobalRenameRequest Keegan (WMF) (talk) 05:56, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I got a message on wikimedia commons that my account clashes with another account also called Assafn and should be changed to Assafn~commonswiki, as far as I know I'm the only one using that name in all. Can you tell me with with account do I clash? Maybe it's an account I opened long ago and forgot? Assafn (talk) 10:00, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi Assafn, per Special:centralauth/Assafn , now your commons account is attached to the global account, so it will not be renamed. There is one unattached account on English Wikipedia which will be renamed. --Shanmugamp7 (talk) 12:44, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Account name conflict: Galaxy

edit

Hi, I got the message and checked my accounts.

I have confirmed the following account are mine by login:

  • Galaxy @ zh-classical.wikipedia.org
  • Galaxy @ species.wikimedia.org
  • Galaxy001 @ zh.wikipedia.org
  • Galaxy, Galaxy001 @ meta.wikimedia.org

For id Galaxy,The unified account named "Galaxy" includes the following accounts, according to meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MergeAccount:

  • it.wikipedia.org

I am sure this is not mine as I do not speak Italian.

I further check the Global account information and find on it.wikipedia.org, id Galaxy is blocked as:

  • Blocked indefinitely. Reason: Evasione del blocco: di altro utente bloccato, cfr

So, I wonder if I can take the id Galaxy as the only reported conflict is a blocked id which is not mine.

Why did you do it this way?

edit

I have to admit being a bit frustrated and upset. I have had the same user name on the English Wikipedia for over 10 years. It's a simple handle with which I closely identify. I am not a regular contributor, but I have remained active off and on over the years, and even donated a few nickels from time to time. When I first signed up, I got a nice note from Angela welcoming me to the project. Yesterday I got a note on user page stating that my account name was going to be changed. I don't like it. I like my old name. I investigated further and found that there is another gentleman in France that has the same user name who signed up a year after me. He has more edits, so under your scheme, he "wins" and I "lose". I certainly don't want to take this fellow's user name away from him, as he probably loves it as much or more than I do mine.

I really don't understand why we can't both have the same name. I don't know if this fellow needs to edit the English Wikipedia, but I certainly won't be editing the French Wikipedia. I don't really get into too many of the other spaces, so all I really care about is keeping my name on the English Wikipedia, where I am invested. Why couldn't you just have used email addresses as unique identifiers?

Waterboy365 (talk) 12:17, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

After further investigation, I discovered that this other user appears not to have been active at all since 2008, so would it be possible for me to keep my user name? Waterboy365 (talk) 13:25, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Your account will be renamed

edit

In 2008 I registered myself in Italian Wikipedia as "Andrea brescio" and I also edited in other wikis with the same name. Later I requested a rename to "Krepideia" and I believed that the procedure were applied to all other wikis (but looking at this, seems it is not: [1]). Now I recieved a message in my Italian Wikipedia talk which says that my account will be renamed in "Andrea brescio~itwiki", but I would like that my global account name will remain "Krepideia". Thanks. --Krepideia judica causam tuam 12:45, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

The only account that will be automatically renamed is the blocked "Andrea brescio" account on itwiki, your current account will rename the same and nothing will change with that. That the 0-edit accounts remain under "Andrea brescio" is not a problem. With kind regards, Savhñ 15:45, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Username

edit

Hello, Keegan.

I didn't know that my username will be changed and another user could have same name.

Well, I'd like to know if I registered my username first. If positive, it's better to be equal. If no, how many time I have to choose a new username?

Thank you. Userwiki (talk) 13:40, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

You are currently using the global account Userwiki, which you will be able to keep. You can check CentralAuth to see whether accounts listed there as "not attached" are yours. If they are, log in and access Special:MergeAccount on that project. All attached accounts, part of the global account, will not be renamed. You probably received a notification because at that moment, those accounts were not unified. Once you have a global account, you will not have to choose a new username again. I want to keep my username

edit

Deer Keegan, I hereby officially object the renaming of my German Account [Boson]. I am using this very name on the German Wikipedia since 2004!! I feel harassed by the decision of the Wikipedia Foundation to take away my nickname. Why should my right to use my name weigh less than the right of the global user who registered this name later than I did? Please reconsider your procedure... from my point of view it is not fair. --95.119.233.115 17:01, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

The English user Boson is from 2003 and has 14.000 edits. You are from 2004 and have 500 edits. I am very sorry, but they have a good claim to the name. We apologise for the inconvenience, but please bare with us and choose a new name. Sincerely, Taketa (talk) 19:57, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Merge my Fedor accounts on several wikipedias and rename to Amphioxys although I already used this on french wiktionary

edit

Hi! In the early days, I created my Fedor username on a number of different language wikipedias (most notably English (en), Dutch (nl), Afrikaans (af) and Danish (da)) all of which are listed on the Special:MergeAccount list to my satisfaction. However, I would like to have Fedor renamed to Amphioxys, because the former username is also used on several other wikipedia sites, where this user is not me. The problem is that on the french wiktionary I myself already used that username (Utilisateur:Amphioxys), preventing me to rename using Special:GlobalRenameRequest. You can see that for the french wiktionary user the same e-mail address is used (and password too, if you can see that). Could you please help? This Amphioxys username is pretty unique and I have recently started using it everywhere. I have temporarily requested a rename Aelurid, but would really prefer Amphioxys. Thanks in advance! Aelurid (talk) 20:21, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi Aelurid, all the "Fedor" names that are not you will be renamed in April and you will have the Fedor name on all projects. Since this seems to be your reason to rename, do you still want to be renamed? Sincerely, Taketa (talk) 20:45, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hi Taketa! I would like to rename to Amphioxys on all wikis where Fedor, Aelurid or Amphioxys is me, please. :-) Aelurid (talk) 09:55, 22 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Deliberate renaming

Hello Keegan! I am absolutely against deliberate renaming of my account into ~ruwiki, as I speak 6 languages and 3 of them good enough to write in wikipedia, why should I tied into RU segment? I did not know who have account of the same name and how it is possible and why user who have the same have more right to hold it. I call for justice!

You can pick a new name. Follow the instructions for requesting a change in your username on your ruwiki talk page. Ajraddatz (talk) 03:36, 22 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Merge accounts

edit

Dear Keegan,

My account name is currently WikiC on both French Wikibook and French Wikiversity. Would it be possible to rename these accounts into "Wikic", with a lowercase 'c'? The latter username already exists and is also mine. To prove it, I just set e-mail adresses of both Wikic and WikiC accounts to be the same. You can also notice that WikiC's user page on fr.wiktionary redircts on Wikic's because I asked a few years ago to merge these accounts on French Wiktionary.

Best regards,

My user name change in Commons

edit

Hello Keegan,
You wrote me on my Commons talk page through the MediaWiki message delivery that my user name will be renamed. I want to express that I oppose such a renaming since my account is more active than the other one. I am a sysop on the German wiktionary, and also are editing minor stuff from time to time on other projects like the German Wikipedia. As far as I see the other Caligari is only active on the Spanish Wikipedia. Why then should my account be renamed since all the other accounts by the name of "Caligari" - except that of the Spanish Wikipedia - are already associated to me and accessible through my password. Wouldn't it be simplier if my global user account would finally come to completion by renaming the Caligari of the Spanish Wikipedia? - Kind regards, Caligari (talk) 09:44, 22 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

The Caligari of the Spanish Wikipedia only made 76 edits so far: see at the bottom of my accounts "es.wikipedia.org not attached not attached — 76 ". I made thousands so far. So again, why are You considering renaming me instead of him and by doing so fail the completion of my SUL global account? - Kind regards, Caligari (talk) 10:05, 22 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hi Caligari, The message was not intended for you, it is given for this account, since Caligari27 talk page is redirecting to your page you got the message. Your account (Caligari) will not be renamed, only the unattached es wiki account will be renamed--Shanmugamp7 (talk) 11:12, 22 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hi Shanmugamp7, thank You for the swift reply and the clarification. I may add that the account Caligari27 is also an old one of me. Do you know where the best place is to ask for deletion of this account? Here or on Commons? Thanks in advance. - Kind regards, Caligari (talk) 11:18, 22 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Caligari: Usually account deletions are not done based on user request, its only carried out for technical reasons. If you don't want use that account you can just abandon it :)--Shanmugamp7 (talk) 11:22, 22 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Shanmugamp7: Okay, I see. I just saw that the page says "Registered [...] 16 March 2015" which is telling me that it is not an old account of me, since my old one was created 7 or 8 years ago. So it shouldn't be my account anyway. Apologies, I got confused. :) - Kind regards, Caligari (talk) 11:30, 22 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I just took a look at the accounts of Caligari27 and it should be my old accounts since they redirect to my homewiki on the German wiktionary, but what confuses me is that why does it say that they only have been registered some days ago? This is confusing. - Caligari (talk) 11:36, 22 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
I think it shows the global account creation date, recently as part of SUL finalization process this is done from server side. As you can see here, that account was created in 2008.--Shanmugamp7 (talk) 12:16, 22 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Мико/2008-4

Hello Keegan,
You wrote me on my bg Wikipedia talk page through the MediaWiki message delivery that my user name will be renamed. The thing is, you wrote me on an archived talk page in my namespace bg:Потребител беседа:Мико/2008-4 saying there is a duplicate user with the name of my archived talkpage - Мико/2008-4. I think there is some mistake going on... :)--Мико (talk) 13:14, 22 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi! You received the message because Потребител беседа:Мико Ставрев] is a redirect to your talk's archive page. As the bot follows redirects and "Мико Ставрев" on bgwiki is going to be renamed, the bot posted the message on your talk page. Sincerely, --Glaisher (talk) 16:16, 23 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
And why Мико Ставрев which is my old name is going to be renamed? --Мико (talk) 19:35, 23 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Because the ruwiki account is the global account now and the bgwiki account is not attached to the global account. If it belongs to you as well, you can try attaching it to the global account by going to Special:MergeAccount. If you want to merge your current account and the previous account, you can request it once user merge is possible (it will be available soon). --Glaisher (talk) 05:33, 24 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

User name

edit

Guess I'm not the only one with this problem :-). I'm not sure why I got the message considering I unified my login a long time ago, and i'm the only user of the name Saxum on almost all Wiki's. I honestly don't care about my username being used by someone else on any Wikiproject except the following: hr.wiki, en.wiki, commons and meta, because I have been active on the mentioned for a long time.--Saxum (talk) 13:15, 22 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi, as you already own the global account, your account won't be renamed on hrwiki, enwiki, commons and meta. Only the accounts at ltwiki and eswiki will be renamed and I guess these accounts belong to someone else. --Glaisher (talk) 16:12, 23 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

User name 1001nuits

edit

Hi, the duplicate name may come from the fact that I have two accounts: one in English and one in France. If your duplicates are only those two, you can delete my English account if I can, with the French one access potentially to wikipedia English. Cheers, 1001nuits86.219.162.49 18:05, 22 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

User Gus

edit

Dear Keegan, I used the login "Gus", while editing Polish wikipedia and "Guswen" for English wiki. What should I do to "unify" myself under "Guswen"?

Hi Gus, "Guswen" is a unified account, so you can use that account on all the Wikimedia projects. Currently user merge tool is not available, so we cant merge "Gus" into "Guswen" . My suggestion here is rename your pl wiki account "Gus" to a different name if you don't like "Gus~plwiki" , then wait for user merge tool, once it is available you can request "Gus~plwiki" to be merged to "Guswen"--Shanmugamp7 (talk) 02:16, 23 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Merge two french account

edit

Hello,

I write this topics, because since 2009, i need to merge my 2 account. Without knowledge, i create a first account on fr.wikipedia. But when i have wanted to share some media on wikimedia, i have read that i cannot because this pseudo is yet used.

I create a second account, i am using today.

Is it possible to merge my first account on fr.wikipedia (chani), with my principal account (Chani_tth) ?

It will be more practical, and i let the first owner of the chani's account (en) with this pseudo.

Thanks for the time you take for my request.

Best regards

It's possible to merge those accounts in the future, but not right now. So we need to wait. --Stryn (talk) 16:06, 23 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

For information, i'm on Wikipedia since 2008 ... and my namesake only since 2015, march then i don't very understand why i must change my name and not my namesake ... If you want discute with me, you can send me a personal message on my email.

Renaming and credits for edits done so far

edit

In the message to the user accounts, which will be renamed, you state Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in. That´s fine, but you might have missed the case when a language version have imported the full history of an article from another language version, before they have translated the article, and the right user to credit is the one who has written the article on the language version wherefrom the import is done. See the following example: I´m user Historiker (talk · contribs) with homewiki sv:wp, and have the SUL account. Several articles, which I have contributed to on sv:wp, have been imported to no:wp. It seems that the account has been created earlier on no:wp, but no contributions other than mine, are to be found there. You find it in no:wp Historiker´s contributions. So I would like to get the credit for those edits, when I get the account there. Is this situation something that has been missed in the process?--Historiker (talk) 19:03, 23 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Historiker: the problem with imported edits is well known, and SUL finalization will not hurt this problem but can slightly help it. As an example, all edits made by de:User:Keegan are actually me except for three somewhere in the middle. That account will be renamed to "Keegan~dewiki" but it doesn't change the muddled attribution. Now, in the case where an account's only contributions are imports from another wiki, after SUL finalization the stewards will have a tool in a couple of months to merge separately-named accounts. This would resolve those problems. The muddled users, however, remain a separate monster of a challenge :/ Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:03, 23 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Inactive user has been given global account

edit

Hi, I am Spike on the English Wikipedia. After seeing your renaming notification, I checked to see who had got the global name "Spike". And if I read Special:CentralAuth/Spike correctly, it is pl:User:Spike (who had been given the global name on March 17, 2015). But after putting their user page and user contributions page through Google Translate, I got the impression that this user is inactive since November 2009 and is also a "puppet" (wording on translated user page) of pl:User:Spike78 (who seems to be the same as pl:User:Grzegorz "Spike" Rendchen). Since I would really like to keep my name, my question now is if there is a chance for me to obtain the global account instead of the inactive user. And if so, where should I raise this request? Is Steward requests/Username changes the appropriate place? User Spike (talk) 00:28, 24 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

@User Spike: yes, SRUC would be the appropriate page. There is no global policy, or local one(s) really, which define an inactive account. From the technical side, there is no such thing as an "inactive account." That definition takes a community decision. I'm terribly sorry :( Keegan (WMF) (talk) 03:14, 24 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
