UNESCO Challenge edit

Hi Jsamwrites,

Thank you for your contributions in the UNESCO Challenge. However, please chose images to illustrate the articles with care. Points will not be awarded for contributions that are not kept on the wiki where the contribution was made. Be careful to follow the local Wikipedia policies.

I suggest you go over the articles and see if you could add one or two images to the articles instead, and adjust your score accordingly.

Best regards and good luck in the Challenge,

Wikimedia diversity - What happened at the conference and how to follow up edit

Hello Jsamwrites,
We are messaging you now because you signed up as an ambassador for Wikimedia Diversity Conference 2017. We are sharing this message far and wide, so apologies in advance if you are receiving this message twice.

During the conference, we dedicated a full afternoon to discussing the strategic direction and what it means for the work on diversity in the Wikimedia movement. Compiling the outcomes of those conversations, we summarized the key problems and solutions identified, and we created a summary statement. But the conversation is far from over! We still need to hear from diversity ambassadors: (1) what does working for diversity mean at your local context?; (2) what are the needs that should be addressed; (3) what resources are relevant for these identified needs?

We know that diversity gains meaning in context, and this is why we need to hear every voice. Please take a few minutes to go over to the diversity conversation page and add your comments.

If you’d like to stay in touch, and share your experience working for diversity with others, add your profile on our group here.

Thank you and see you on the wiki,
Sara (talk)

The Community Wishlist Survey edit

Hi,

You get this message because you’ve previously participated in the Community Wishlist Survey. I just wanted to let you know that this year’s survey is now open for proposals. You can suggest technical changes until 11 November: Community Wishlist Survey 2019.

You can vote from November 16 to November 30. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won’t send out a separate reminder to you about that. /Johan (WMF) 11:25, 30 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Wikimania Ambassador edit

Hi!

I noticed that you have signed up as a Wikimedia Diversity Ambassador, after the Diversity Conference held in Stockholm 2017. In August this year, Wikimania will take place in Stockholm, and our goal is to use Ambassadors to reach out to local communities, to spread the news about the conference and the outcomes afterwards. The conference theme (still to be announced) will connect closely to diversity. If you would like to be involved as a Wikimania ambassador, please sign up at the Ambassador page at the Wikimania wiki!

A first thing to do, if you would like to help out, would be to translate the scholarship page at the Wikimania wiki into the language(s) you speak!

West Bengal Wikimedians open for community request edit

Hi Jsamwrites!

You are receiving this message because you have signed as a General member of the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group.

Like previous years, we are asking our members again to request for support if they wish to plan and execute Wikimedia projects or activities during next year, which require funding. We are open for such requests until November 30, 2020. Based on the fund requests from the community members, the user group will place Rapid grant proposal to Wikimedia Foundation. If the rapid grant request is approved, funds will be allocated to the community members accordingly.

We can only approve request for volunteers who are from West Bengal and is limited to activities where in some way, West Bengal is included. The decision to approve or disapprove your request will be handled by Representative members of the user group.

Regards,
Bodhisattwa
(On behalf of West Bengal Wikimedians User Group)

The Wikimedia LGBTQ+ User Group is holding online working days in May. If you’re an active Wikimedian, editing on LGBTQ+ issues or if you identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, come help us set goals, develop our organisation and structures, consider how to respond to issues faced by Queer editors, and plan for the next 12 months.

We will be meeting online for 3 half-days, 14–16 May at 1400–1730 UTC. While our working language is English, we are looking to accommodate users who would prefer to participate in other languages, including translation facilities.

View it! Tool update Sept. 2022

Thank you for signing up for View it! updates!

As a reminder, you can view details about how to install the View it! user script or use the Toolforge tool on our meta page. Please use the talk page there to contact the team!

August happenings

  • We held two community conversations, one in person at Wikimania 2022/Pittsburgh and one virtual during a Wikimedians in Residence Exchange Network meeting.
    • During both meetings we discussed final design of View it!, and results refinement and querying. Check the August updates for notes from both meetings.
  • View it! is working across all Wikimedia projects, and we are currently working on multi-lingual functionality.

Coming in September

  • Currently plan to focus development on multilingialism, on-wiki/editor features for the user script, and extending the search functions on Toolforge.
  • We are continuing to respond to user feedback and finalizing design.

Action to take

  • Install Beta script and see how it can used to add new images to articles.
  • All editors are invited to share the tool with their local wiki communities, or incorporate it into relevant local templates, such as infoboxes. If you do so, please let us know about it, so we can ensure backwards compatibility for that use case as we continue development!
  • Feel free to leave comments on our Discussion page

View it! beta testing - September update and call for response edit

View it! Tool
View it! Tool Beta Testing Sept. 2022

Thank you for signing up to be a beta tester! We appreciate your interest and assistance with the development of View it!. Please install the beta script and start to see the results that View it! pulls. Our intention is to check in periodically and occasionally ask questions related to the current stages of development. However, please feel free to leave messages on the Discussion page at any time with comments or questions you have. To respond to the questions below, please visit the Discussion page's September response section. Thank you again!

Current questions:

  • You can view our test version with expanded search features at https://view-it.toolforge.org/test/. Please compare these search options with the existing default (which relies on a "custommatch"-based search query that combines "depicts" results and top-level category membership).
    1. What default behavior would you prefer when clicking the tool from the user script? (ex. "custommatch" vs. just P180, or something else)
    2. What are your opinions on which features to integrate from the Toolforge test and how? We are wondering if you like all of the existing ones, or not, or want others, if these are overkill and overcomplicate the search interface, if you'd rather see advanced search on a separate page, etc.
  • We are also thinking about the buttons and click behavior on the existing user script design.
    1. The View it! button currently exists in the top tab bar, next to "Talk". Do you prefer this placement, or another option (such as the leftmost sidebar, or another location).
    2. The button currently uses "View" in English. Do you have opinions on use of this wording? Is there another suggestion you prefer (such as "Images", "Media", etc.). Would you like an icon or not?
    3. When clicking on the tab from a wiki project, do you want Toolforge to open in the same browser tab or a new tab? When clicking an image within the Toolforge tool, do you want the Commons file page to open in that same browser tab or in a new tab?
  • If you have other feedback on any other aspect, please let us know! We are also happy to hear ideas about future development, such as planned editor tools.

October Update edit

September/October Happenings

  • View it! is now multilingual! We are currently working on tool localization. Please consider helping us!
  • View it! now has advanced search option on Toolforge, simply toggle on to enable searching with a different property constraint, free text, specific resolution, and quality assessment.
  • Advanced search allows for searching by Commons Categories which have an associated P373.
    • Commons Category search will also show sub-categories for more specific results.

Coming Soon

  • We are releasing a new version of View it! that will implement some of the Toolforge functionality into the on-Wiki experience.
  • We are thinking about ways for View it! results to show up on page as an image grid, gallery or other form, without leaving the page. Please let us know what your idea/preference is.
  • Integrating editor features such as the ability to add an image from View it! or remove a faulty statement.

Action to take

  • Share your thoughts with us about the interface! What would you like the final product to look like? Should it be on-wiki? Preference on location of the button/link? We are open to ideas - please share them with us.

View it! has been expanded and will have an official launch demo session Jan. 12th edit

Goat View it! results
View it! Tool update Jan. 2023

Big news, View it! users! Over the last two months, View it! has been expanded to two versions. Our new full version shows images within the wiki content page, and the "View" tab displays a gallery of images without leaving the site you are on, as you can see at right. We have rebranded the original version, which utilizes the "View" tab to link to our Toolforge search results, to "Lite". We invite you to switch to full version and try it out! Major changes:

  • The full version includes an image carousel on each content page (at the top, under the article navigation buttons) which can be expanded for pagination.
  • You may notice the "View" button has moved to between the "Read" and "Edit" buttons - the View button is in the same place for both versions and we felt this was a better placement for editors.
  • In full version, clicking the "View" tab will take you to a full-screen gallery.

Action to take

Thank you for being a part of the View it! journey and please join us for the launch on January 12th!

As a reminder, you can view details about how to install the View it! user script or use the Toolforge tool on our meta page. Please use the talk page to contact us with comments or issues.

We are sending you this message as you have signed up as a general member of the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group. We would like to inform you that the user group has organized its 2024 Annual General Meeting of Representative Members yesterday at the Birla Industrial & Technological Museum, Kolkata. A new Representative Committee has also been formed while replacing 3 out of 5 members, who have completed their full term tenure for this responsibility. The participants have also shared learning from the projects taken from previous year and shared plans about new projects which they are willing to take during this year on behalf of the user group. We are also introducing a mentorship program from this year, where willing general members can work together with our program leads in user group programs and learn from each other. So, stay tuned for more excitements!
