Wikipedia Asian Month 2018/Asian Art
Wikipedia Asian Art Month 2018, supported by WikiProject Metropolitan Museum of Art, is an affiliated event of the Wikipedia Asian Month, which is being held during November 2018.
Update: The contest has now been extended to December 2018, and participation will be welcomed until the end of the year! Note that December submissions are still eligible for postcards/prizes from the sub-contest, but not for the general contest.
This is a successor event to Wikipedia Asian Month 2017/Asian Art.
This event encourages Asian art topics: articles about historical Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any region of Asia.
Your topic could be either an individual artwork or artist, a more general type or genre of artwork, or an art tradition in a particular culture. You can translate from another language, or start your article from the beginning. Eligible articles for this sub-contest should also include at least one photo from the Met Open Access CC0 release of historical artworks among the article's images.
You are encouraged to pick an Asian art topic as one of your four new articles for the larger Wikipedia Asian Month contest, and we will send you a Met postcard just for that. We will also send you an additional Met postcard for two article expansions of existing Asian art articles.
Additionally, we will have a larger gift like the Met guidebook or Asian art publications for the global grand prize winner(s), probably for the top three contributors, with one point for every new art article and 0.5 points for every expanded art article.
This is a global event, meaning that any Wikipedia user who joins Wikipedia Asian Month will automatically join this event. You are encouraged to mention this sub-contest in your local Wikipedia.
For any questions, or help with topics, ask on the discussion page.
Rules
editYou can participate by:
- Writing 1 new article, at least 300 words / 3k bytes, in any language, on an Asian art topic, and illustrated by a Met Open Access photo among the article's images.
- Expanding 2 existing articles, at least 300 words / 3k bytes, in any language, on an Asian art topic, and illustrated by a Met Open Access photo among the article's images.
Prizes
editAnyone who participates in the above way will be sent a Met postcard, and you can participate and get two postcards for participating in both ways,
We'll also have a larger gift, like the Met guidebook or Asian art publications, for the global grand prize winner(s), with one point for every new art article and 0.25 points for every expanded art article.
Image searches
editThere is a great diversity of Met Open Access CC0 images to use, and span the breadth of almost all Asian cultures. You can use other images as well, but for this sub-contest at least one should be from the Met.
You can directly search the Met collection site for interesting Asian artworks (the geographical targeting is country-based, so check for edge cases), and you can then search within that group, for particular cultural or artistic terms:
Search the Met Open Access CC0 release on Commons here:
If you have trouble matching a particular artwork with its Commons image, just ask on the discussion page.
Article recommendations
editYou are encouraged to work on any Asian art topic (for articles on an individual artwork, an artwork type, or an art tradition), and there are many possible Met Open Access CC0 images to use.
For thematic ideas, you can use as a starting point the Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History essays, organized by geographical region, that cover broader culture topics in the format of "Art of Culture X" — such as Art of the Seljuqs of Iran, and each essay includes multiple example artworks from the Met collection. Individual artwork pages for the Met also often have pointers to Met publications and scholarly references.
If you need help finding an image to illustrate a particular Asian art topic, or to find Met publications to use as references, feel free to ask on the discussion page.
(Primary examples here are on English Wikipedia, but of course many Asian art topics will exists in some language Wikipedias but not others. Translations of existing articles between languages are encouraged.)
Translations
editPick your language code and use d:Wikidata:Met Open Access Artworks Challenge.
Any Asian artwork in the collection qualifies.
For example, Articles that remain to be translated into English
If your language is missing, please request it!
(Articles that are not about a particular artwork are ok to translate too, but they are not as easy to query. One option is translate some of the articles written for the contest last year.)
