I would like to work towards a vision for machine translation such as I describe on User:Coppertwig/Wikiglotbot. Your translation tool can be seen as a step in that direction. If you allow the option of French/English phrases, I might put some in. (Although isn't that duplication of effort? Ideally you would download Wiktionary information, which already has many synonyms, including some phrases I think.) I might also try writing a program that can handle some grammar, with the idea that the grammar would be specified in pages to be developed on wikis. I decided to have a crack at some basic data for English -> Afrikaans. You can test it out here. It is only a verb basic system so far, with present tense for 'to be' and 'to have', and around 100 words (some of them from your list). Try out stuff like:
- I have seven beers
- Tunisia is a country in North Africa (try it with some other countries)
- Tunisia is the name of a country in North Africa (this will inaccurately translate 'name', as a result of the German POS tagger I'm currently using)
I'm not an Afrikaans speaker, and I got most of the grammatical information from en:Afrikaans grammar. To get an idea of the kind of data we need, take a look at: this bilingual dict and this monolingual dict. I collaborate with lettera27 in Milan, a non profit foundation who support the right to literacy, to education, and the access to knowledge and information. Our principal project is WikiAfrica/Palabre: a collaborative and international project designed to Africanize Wikipedia through networks, research, projects, publications, and events. In June 2008, we will participate at the Cape Town Book Fair, to present the WikiAfrica Literature project. At the same time, we would facilitate the participation and access to Wikipedia and involve publishers and authors to contribute at their own entries on Wikipedia at our booth. We are looking now for an admin of Wikipedia, living in Cape Town and disposed kindly to collaborate and help us to during the Book Fair? Community Exchange SystemEdit
The CES is indeed a 'notable' example of such an exchange system by virtue of at very least its increasing global reach. I discuss this in detail in a thesis on the subject that can be found at: http://scholar.sun.ac.za/handle/10019.1/5277. This thesis is prescribed reading for an undergrad anthropology course on Power and Wealth at UCT. I hope something in it may be of use in keeping the article on Wikipedia.
MediaWiki technical meetup in Capetown?Edit
Hi! I'm wondering whether you think there would be interest in a MediaWiki-related technical meetup or tutorial session in Capetown. Guillaume Paumier is working on improving the training materials available and there have been several useful meetups in the past year. I imagine there are a fair number of tech folks in Capetown who run MediaWiki, and perhaps they'd like to know easy ways to customize it, learn of useful extensions, and get encouragement to merge their modifications upstream. We're also improving the web-accessible API and documentation around that, in case people would like to build apps that make use of Wikimedia content.

Translate tab on wikimediaEdit
I saw your page about wikis and translation. Do you think it's possible to implement a "Translate" tab into mediawiki software, just like the tab "Edit". The page would then be sent to a translation platform, with segmentation, and everybody could translate it. After the translation the article would render the translated version.
Application for permanent admin and bureaucrat rights on the South African language WikipediasEdit
As discussed at the recent Wikimedia South Africa board meeting, I am applying for both admin and bureaucrat rights for the following South African language Wikipedias:
Currently, none of the above Wikipedias have any bureaucrats, and only Swati (2), Tsonga (1) and Tswana (1) have administrators. None of the Swati and Tswana administrators are local.
Wikimedia South Africa sees it as important that a local has these rights in order to support the growth of the smaller South African language Wikipedias. At the recent Wikimania, with limited time available, there was much frustration at finding out that an editor either no longer has admin rights, and so we were unable to perform a task, or that there were no editors at all with admin rights. Administrator rights are required so that we can perform tasks such as installing styles and js, needed to create wikidata templates. Bureaucrat rights are needed so that to grant local editors admin rights if needed. Some local editors may not be able to find their way to the meta pages to request adminship, so it will speed up progress if this can be handled by a trusted Wikimedia South Africa member as part of our outreach program. AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!Edit
After a successful first iteration of the Months of African Cinema last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000. About 9 in-person events were also organised for the edit-a-thon in different parts of the world.
The contest is organized by a Wikimedia project called The AfroCine Project, which is dedicated to improving the coverage of the history, works, people, places, and events, that are associated with the cinema, theatre and arts of Africa, African countries, the Caribbean, and the diaspora.
If you would love to join this exciting event, please list your username as a participant on the English Wikipedia contest page. If you would love to lead this contest for your country or community, please list your name in the coordinators' page here. The rapid grants team would be accepting proposals throughout October and November, in case you'd need funds to run local edit-a-thons or some other activities related to this event. Upon listing your name on the coordinators' page, you'd be contacted to talk about the resources you'd need to run the event in your community. You can also contact me directly for any clarifications.
Finally, We also need volunteers to handle some aspects of the AfroCine project. These aspects include:
- Community Liaison: This role essentially involves closely engaging with local communities to support their activities within the scope of Afrocine.
- Communications: This involves the communications aspects of the project. Sharing relevant information on mailing lists and social media would be the responsibility of this person.
- MAC Jury: This role involves joining the jury of Months of African Cinema contest. We need as many people as we can get 🙂.
- Tools: Going forward, we would need relevant tools to better track the metrics and also analyse the general impact of these events. We are calling for Wikimedia volunteers who can navigate wikimedia tools that can be useful for the project.

Re rights requestsEdit
Just saw your GS request, and I think that you will have more value getting local admin rights through the process explained at SRP. For the things that you are looking to do, we (GSes) would be less likely to do such tasks with GS rights (unless there was a request made to SRM) as it is contrary to the accepted approach, we always defer and refer to local admins. Local rights at small wikis should not be problematic, and I would suggest picking one where you do the most editing, and gently expanding. - With requests at small wikis, it is different that those at large communities. What stewards look for in such requests is 1) something has been put to the community, 2) that it has been there for at least a week, and 3) that granting the request is not against the community's wishes. If you have a request discussion at a central place, and no one responds that is usually sufficient to get temporary rights. So then just put the request the rights at SRP with a special:permalink to the discussion at the community.
