Moves edit

Hi. In order to keep a bit of order in the meta namespaces, I have moved the "Sandbox:EGalvez (WMF)", and the subpages to your user namespace. They can be found here, but there seem to be some more left in the Sandbox: namespace. Hope you don't mind. Savhñ 15:23, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hola User:Savh. Muchas gracias por la ayuda :) Creo que ya elimine todas las paginas que fueron creadas en Sandbox:Egalvez. Saludos. --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 19:37, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Broken links edit

Hi Edward,

may I (again) suggest to be a bit more careful when moving around pages? Your recent moves broke a lot of links, including in places [1] [2] where they can't easily be fixed.

Regards, Tbayer (WMF) (talk) 21:22, 8 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Tbayer (WMF), Thank you for bringing these pages to my attention. They've been fixed. --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 11:37, 9 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks!
However (cc Jmorgan), I fear that this and the previous mass moves might caused many more problems that are still unresolved. For example, I recently happened upon the archive box in Grants:Evaluation/Connect/Questions, which appears to point Miszabot to the wrong (old) target pages and lacks the link to the previously archived pages such as Grants:Evaluation/Connect/Questions/Archives/2014-01, which is now orphaned.

Traducción de Metrics Brainstorm edit

Hola, Edward.

Allan J. Aguilar (Ralgis) 17:34, 10 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Wikimedia Education Newsletter: December 2015 edit

Updates, reports, news, and stories about how Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects are used in education around the world.

Survey and consultation methodology edit

Hi Edward, a few comments:

  • Mailing lists do well at reaching a wide range of users. However, they are not a representative range of users. I would suggest that the use of mailing lists for surveys should be limited to summary information about surveys that are going out, and reports about completed surveys. It's rare that the best method to get a representative sample of users will be to use the mailing lists.
  • Mailing lists, village pumps, and similar locales are are good for soliciting ideas, having public deliberations, and for disseminating information. Consultations that are focused on generating ideas or soliciting discussion (rather than on trying to make decisions based on a representative sampling of users) are well suited to these venues.
  • For representative sampling of users, I think that most of the time, using sampling methods and posting invites to individual talk pages will be a better solution. To get even better control of your sample, you can email survey keys to individual users instead of having the surveys be open access, although this method requires more work both for the surveyor and the participant.
  • You might consider soliciting ideas about survey and consultation methodology on the Research mailing list.

Thanks for working on this. --Pine 23:09, 7 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Editor motivations edit

Hi Edward, I'm aware of some old data on what motivates editors to join the Wikimedia community and what motivates them to continue editing. Is there a possibility of getting more recent data (as in 2014 or newer) on these subjects? Thanks, --Pine 00:42, 18 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks User:Pine for the questions. The only thing I'm aware of is the Global South Survey; the last 6 slides have information about motivation. Curious why you'd like this information to see if there is anther way I can help? --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 01:21, 18 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Affiliate report for Nov edit

Wondering what you are looking for? We do a yearly report which will come out in Jan or Feb of 2017.

Here is the report for 2015[4]. Best

Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 03:37, 18 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi User:Doc James I am only just noticing your note after I posted more categories.. sorry for the extra edits. I'm working on building out a better infrastructure for the reporting system for user groups so its easier to follow and so folks know where they are at in the process. I need to do some work on my end as well, so structure is super helpful/easier for me. The Reports page on meta says that your user group's reporting is due in November. Does this need to change? I did notice that your report from last year was through december as well. Ideally, we should stick to the same month each year to make things easier. So let me know what month works better for you and I'm happy to change it. Thanks! --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 16:38, 18 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Yes so if I remember correctly we incorporated in Nov. But our year end is Dec 31st. So yes the reports page on meta should change. Best Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 17:48, 18 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
User:Doc James -- Updated. Thanks! --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 18:50, 18 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Okay so the year end is Dec 31st. We plan to come out with the report between Jan and Mar 2017 if that works. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 19:05, 18 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for responding to my questions about Qualtrics edit

You responded to me at Grants talk:Learning patterns/Qualtrics survey tool. I am still coming to terms with how community groups can do surveys. I work with Wikipedia groups in the US and beyond, and there is a gap between the need for survey information and small groups' ability to do them.

I am not sure what the solution is but thanks for confirming WMF's ongoing commitment to support Qualtrics as a tool of choice when anyone is considering doing surveys inside the WMF community.

Perhaps related to surveying, or perhaps not, some user groups and chapters run votes. Right now SecurePoll appears to be a WMF-supported choice for elections but the tool is not available for community members, and so far as I know, there is no community-supported off wiki recommendation for voting. I wanted to share that in addition to survey information, voting tools are needed. If survey and voting tools were more accessible then I expect more chapters and user groups would use them. I have no idea of the cost/benefit ratio for doing this in Wikimedia projects, but there is concern in wiki community groups about what to use. Blue Rasberry (talk) 16:32, 22 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi User:Bluerasberry! Thanks for asking your questions about qualtrics. I think about survey support often; surveys are not easy to do well, although shorter ones can be done one something like google forms. What I want to do at the very least is come up with simple templates that are available for smaller communities to use when they need them. Things like a pre/post survey for conferences, for editathons/other in-person events, Education program, etc. Having these is a basic first step to other systems we might need/use. One version of these are the first surveys for the education program, which can be found here: outreach:Education/Surveys. I have some work to do to create more templates and put them into qualtrics or google forms so that communities can easily grab and use the surveys. I don't have other ideas at the moment, but would be great to hear if you have any. We could use idealab to have one place for this conversation.
As for polling, I very much agree that polling is essential, especially for our culture, which tries to be about openness and equal voices. The need from my end is to have a way to do surveys/polls where only certain people are able to respond (e.g. users with x number of contributions or with certain user rights), but that we don't necessarily want to know how each person is responding. Something like secure poll, which allows access to certain users to the polling tool. I am wondering if its been posted yet to the Community wishlist? -- it might be too late. At the very least posting it there for record-keeping and so that people see the issue. I don't know how this compares to other software needs though.
