Some questions and feedback about surveys
editHi Edward. I have some questions about previous surveys that you might be able to solve, as well as some feedback:
- Questions on income: in the Editors Survey of April 2011, the PDF questionnaire there is a question about gross monthly income (D6). Results of this questions are not present in the raw data, I'm not sure if the question was asked at all. Also, it seems that questions about income were absent in all further surveys. Is there any reason why this question was removed and not included ever again? (FYI: I asked this in the discussion too).
- Raw data of UNU-MERIT: The UNU-MERIT survey lacks raw data. The article states that it was planned but never released. Do you know if, by any chance, it was later made available?
- Education level: In recent survey reports, there is usally a nice analysis on gender, age and country of residence. However, it seems that factors related to social class are completely absent. Education level is not discussed as far as I see, which used to in 2010-2012, and other factors such as household income, employment, profession and so on seems to be always absent. I would suggest to include some of these questions so that we can analyze social class bias in Wikipedia.
- Translations impact on results: There is a wild deviation from 2011 and 2012 results for the education level question. At least, for adults aged 25-64 in Spain, results are completely different. After checking the translations, I think this could be caused by the fact that translations of the questions were different and they lead to different interpretations on what each level means when translated to the Spanish education system. Specially for the distinction between secondary and tertiary education, which could have shifted all results upwards in 2012. I don't know if this is an anecdotical case or if it happens often, but it is something that should definitely be taken with more care.
Thank you! --MarioGom (talk) 20:43, 6 March 2018 (UTC)
- Hi MarioGom - Thank you for your detailed questions. I can get back to you in a couple weeks - I've set myself a reminder. I'm working on launching a survey at the moment. I want to make sure I give your questions the details they deserve, but I need a bit of time to dig into them. I would love to know generally why you are interested in these surveys. Are you a researcher? Thanks! --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 19:26, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you! I'm not a researcher, just a Wikipedia contributor (eswiki, mainly). I'm interested on systemic bias and I've been working on an essay about social class bias. I'm looking for more data that sheds some light on it. --MarioGom (talk) 22:33, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
- Hi talk - Thanks for the clarification. I apologize, but the launch of the survey takes up more time than I planned for. Is it okay if I get back to you later on? I really want to answer your questions, but they will take up a bit of time that I just don't have right now, but I also don't want to leave you without answers. Let me know if I can get back to you in a couple more weeks. Thanks! --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 18:30, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
- Sure. No rush. Thank you. --MarioGom (talk) 19:22, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
- Hi EGalvez: if anything, I would really be interested in knowing more about my first question about household income. With respect to education, I would just like to stress that it would be interesting to create education levels (and translations) in a way that they can be roughly mapped to some ISCED ranges. Best, --MarioGom (talk) 23:06, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

- Ciao EGalvez,
- I am and want to stay on the list and even on the feedback list (on purpose with my metaPage), but got a reminder on Dutch Overlegpagina. Please change it and use in the future for all people who give feedback the page they provide. Not sending a reminder when they gave feedback would be super!
- Ciao EGalvez,

editQuestion about survey response rates
editHi Edward -
I'm working with CivilServant and a number of Wikipedia communities on studies that will include surveys, and I was hoping to find an estimate of what the typical survey response rate is for surveys. I noticed on one of your (helpful) Learning pages you linked to a document (which the spam filter won't let me link to here) that could provide that information, but I wasn't able to access it.
Would you be able to give us a ballpark idea of what response rates to expect? (We plan on inviting participants via talk page messages, by the way.)
Thanks so much for any guidance you can give, Juliakamin(cs)
