2014 FDC self-nomination edit

Hello, Osmar! Thank you very much for submitting your nomination to join the Funds Dissemination Committee. I am working with the Board representatives to the FDC on the FDC nominations process. As you know, the public question and answer period is now underway. Please do review the questions and respond to them as you are able. If you are selected for an interview, kindly note that interviews will be held the week of the 23rd June and the 30th, if necessary. If the Board appoints you to the FDC, we will be holding orientation for members prior to Wikimania on August 6 and 7 in London. If you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to reach out to me on my Talk page or at FDCsupport@wikimedia.org. Once again, thank you very much for putting yourself forward as a candidate for the FDC! KLove (WMF) (talk) 23:52, 19 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Re: NC or ND licenses, that some people argue are not free edit

What? Does someone argue they are free licenses? :-) I think you meant "that some people dislike/would abolish because they are not free", beware the misunderstandings. --Nemo 06:31, 21 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your correction :). I don't want to dig in the definition of licensing, considering I'm not an expert and is not also the point of the question, but I don't want to be imprecise so I rephrased that. Thanks for reading also! --Osmar Valdebenito, B1mbo (talk) 18:40, 21 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review edit

I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:39, 29 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Affiliate-selected Board seats/2016/Questions edit

Hello there! Please, do assume good faith :) You have not posted your answers to some questions, like:

The voting starts today, so it is better to have everything done as soon as possible. I do want to hear your opinion on the questions you have missed, and I am going to ask this from every candidate, as it is important to understand how a future Trustee (and technically any of us can be elected) treats this or that issue, to know his or her thoughts about it on a public page. And I think that I am not very unique in my desire to have more text to get to know people better :) Wikipedians tend to read people (literally speaking) --アンタナナ 02:15, 24 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

P.S. I do not have intentions to make you answer the questions you do not want to answer, I just want to know your opinion before you are elected as a Trustee. Even if you think that some questions are out of scope or not relevant. Thank you :) --アンタナナ 02:15, 24 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Antanana: Hi! As I mentioned here a few days ago, I had some personal issues and I couldn't reply as fast as I wish. Now, I'm catching up with the rest of the answers and I hope to have them all answered this Easter weekend. --Osmar Valdebenito, B1mbo (talk) 12:47, 24 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Affiliate-selected Board seats edit

Dear B1mbo, I am chair of Wikimedia Ukraine Board and writing to you on behalf of Wikimedia Ukraine. Is it possible for you to find an hour to talk via Skype (hangouts) during the next few days? Preferably before May 6, as we have to vote before May 7. I have written a letter to you, please check your email.

I apologize for such a short notice, but I thought I would have an opportunity to meet all candidates during Wikimedia Conference 2016. And we were really busy with Wiki Loves Earth contest last week --Ilya (talk) 22:58, 1 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

Bridges across Cultures edit

Hi B1mbo. Please also translate the Template:Bridges across Cultures signs editnotice/i18n. It will show up when people add their name or articles to the list of Bridges across Cultures/Participants. Many thanks! --

Hi again! I really wonder how you decided to change the criteria. New rules gives a huge disadvantage to writers of high quality articles. Just creating a new article with a infobox easily pushes it up to 5 kB while adding the extra info to make it 20 kB takes several times extra effort but same points! -- Meisam (talk) 09:15, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hi Meisam! This is a particularly difficult issue and I understand your concerns. Lowering the minimum size makes it easier for people to participate, while increasing it ensures you will get better articles but it is more difficult, so we need to find a balance. While I was creating the table of proposed articles, I noticed that 5kB seems a reasonable limit. While adding infoboxes and galleries and lists obviously helps to increase the size of an article easily, it still doesn't cross the threshold so you have to provide more information. For example, this article which has basically just an infobox has less than 2kB. On the other hand this other article is a very decent article, not just with the infobox but also with a lot of text; however, it has just 6kB, so wouldn't have been eligible for the contest. I proposed the change to the organizing committee and they agreed. Once the contest is finished, we will evaluate if the 5kB is reasonable for the contest or maybe we should increase it for the next edition. Thanks for your preocupation and thanks also for all the help in the contest itself!   --Osmar Valdebenito, B1mbo (talk) 14:57, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
I understand the reason to grant points to 5kB articles. My main concern is not the threshold itself. I’m more concerned about the increments. Consider these articles:
  • article_1 (5.1 kB) - 10 points
  • article_2 (10.1 kB) - 10 points
  • article_3 (15.1 kB) - 10 points
  • article_4 (20.1 kB) - 20 points
Articles 1-3 will all receive only 10 points while it is >x3 times harder to write article_3 than article_1. And, instead of granting at least x4 points to article_4 it will just receive twice the points of article_1! -- Meisam (talk) 15:07, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
On a separate topic; this article is more than 6 kB! -- Meisam (talk) 15:16, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Saludos. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by MarisaLR (talk)
I agree MarisaLR. As I've written here earlier, it is unfair towards the people writing high quality articles. I propose the points to be distributed in the following manner:
  • 0-5 kB - 0 points
  • 5-10 kB - 5 points
  • 10-15 kB - 10 points
  • 15-20 kB - 15 points
  • 20-25 kB - 20 points
  • 25+ kB - 25 points
It will still favor creation of new articles but does not punish the high-quality article writer as much as now. -- Meisam (talk) 17:14, 17 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hi Meisam, this topic was already discussed with the different groups organizing the contest. There were several proposals as you can see in the history of the article, and in fact I proposed a more distributed system, but has different problems. That is why it was decided the current system. The contest is already running so I wouldn't change the system now. As I mentioned, we can evaluate the results at the end of this edition and see if we can change it for next year. --Osmar Valdebenito, B1mbo (talk) 17:26, 17 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Gracias a ambos por vuestras respuestas, sigo diciendo que es una lástima para los que nos gusta hacer artículos de más calidad. --MarisaLR (talk) 17:40, 17 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Unicode character size problem for contest criteria edit

Another problem is that ar,fa characters are saved as 2-Byte unicode characters. As an example when I add one "B" character: in es Wikipedia or in tr Wikipedia is a +1 byte edit while adding one character in Persian Wikipedia is a +2 byte edit! This will definitely screw the evaluation for users contributing to tr.Wikipedia. Because, their contributions will count as half of the contributions of ar.Wikipedia and fa.Wikipedia users which are in the same contest group. -- Meisam (talk) 16:22, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

As an example, both of these two articles are 6-7 kB: Caracas Simón Bolívar Meydanı (tr) کارلوس مونسیویس (fa) -- Meisam (talk) 22:27, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hi! I get the point. However, it is very difficult to implement a different system that can be just, simple to evaluate and easy to explain. We discussed at the beggining of the contest between the organizers the best way to evaluate and it is very hard to find a system that works for everyone. As I mentioned, this is the first edition of the contest so we will evaluate how the points system works and what can we change for future editions. --Osmar Valdebenito, B1mbo (talk) 23:41, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
I think we can simply count the number of added characters (not the total size of the contribution) for the articles written in Arabic and Persian Wikipedias to be on the same foot as the Turkish Wikipedia. As a rough estimate it will be half of the size. Exact value can be automatically extracted by a bot. -- Meisam (talk) 23:52, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

The Affiliate-selected Board seats process welcomes your support edit

Hello. You are receiving this message because you are active in the field of translations <3 The movement needs you! The Nominations phase has started for the ongoing selection process of two Board members, and the timeline is quite tight.

A Translation Central is available to help translators figure out what's been covered and what's left to do. Over the course of the next few weeks, your attention on candidates' profiles is particularly welcome.

While there are four languages that are especially relevant for multiple affiliates (namely Arabic, French, Russian and Spanish), you can also add others. If you can't help: please see if you know anyone in your circle who could, and spread the word :) Thank you! Elitre (WMF) and Facilitators of ASBS 2019, 13:20, 18 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

The Research team could use your help edit

Hello. You are receiving this message because of your recent activity in the Translations namespace.
