New logo for Wikivoyage edit

Since today, Wikivoyage has a new logo: File:Wikivoyage-logo.svg. Who can updated it? Romaine (talk) 23:32, 8 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Test edit for project icons update edit

I made a test edit to Www.wikivoyage.org template/temp to see if it could help with the prolem discussed at Talk:Project portals#Update project icons. If it is an improvement or can be editted to the same effect feel free to do so, otherwise revert the edit and let me know either on my talk page or the "Project portals" talk page. – Allen4names (talk) 19:53, 8 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

correction edit

The Romanian translation of search is incorrect; it should be Căutare instead of Salt. sumone10154(talk) 01:36, 12 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Proposal edit

See the discussion here: Wikivoyage/Lounge#New_Interlingual_Portal. πr2 (t • c) 00:24, 21 March 2013 (UTC) Per discussion at Wikivoyage/Lounge#v8 (a subsection of Wikivoyage/Lounge#New_Interlingual_Portal), could an admin please copy-n-paste-replace Www.wikivoyage.org template (and Www.wikivoyage.org template/temp) with the code at Www.wikivoyage.org template/temp v8. Thank you. --Rogerhc (talk) 17:07, 9 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

I will refrain from completing this change, because I was (slightly) involved in the discussion. I have also mentioned the request on RFH#Edit_requests_on_project_portals. πr2 (t • c) 23:19, 12 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

I don't really feel comfortable making this change. Ideally, all of the Wikimedia project portals should have a unified identity. That's currently the case with every sister project, so I don't really think we should move away from that without discussing this more broadly and/or involving the Communications team. Cbrown1023 talk 22:43, 17 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

The WMF Communications team has been aware for a little while, we all kinda like the change and think it's very pretty. I think having some more uniqueness is not always bad at all and something generally up to the wikivoyage community unless it's problematic (this is not) or puke ugly (a subset of problematic). As you can see on the discussion my talk page there was some comments about how we could make the wikimedia button (or lack of a button which Jay was fine with) better but we're still fine with it going live. Jalexander (talk) 22:51, 17 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Make it more mobile friendly edit

By simply adding a viewport the existing wikivoyage homepage could be even better on mobile.

<meta name="viewport" content="initial-scale=1.0, user-scalable=yes">

Massive kudos to whoever designed the existing page. I was extremely happy to see that it was designed with mobile in mind. Hats off to you! Jdlrobson (talk) 21:17, 17 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Done. I also brought over some other mobile CSS from www.wikipedia.org template. Cbrown1023 talk 23:02, 17 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Can't scroll to see privacy policy or image credit links edit

Tested on FF, Chrome, Safari. PiRSquared17 (talk) 18:47, 26 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

If the window is big enough it is shown. It can also be reached by scrolling via the page down / arrow keys on the keyboard. But yes, something's broken. Killiondude (talk) 21:02, 26 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, yeah, I see what you mean. The larger issue is that the HTML and general layout for this page is a bit of a mess. I'm not sure setting the background image on the body was the wisest move and the CSS really ought to be centralized. But your edit is fine for now, I guess. There are larger concerns about elements such as the top black nav bar. Basically that wide image, if not confined, is almost always going to cause a horizontal scrollbar. So you can zap the scrollbar fairly easily with an overflow directive, but that black bar at the top then will also get affected if the overflow is on the body. Bleh. --MZMcBride (talk) 21:35, 26 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
The vertical scroll bar appears, as expected, for me when I size the window to a height that requires it to view the photo credit and terms of service links. I'm in FF on Linux. --Rogerhc (talk) 22:58, 21 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Adjusted padding between bottom two languages edit

The texts of the bottom two languages, lang13 and lang14, in the circle around the logo were overlapping each other. I fixed that. I also added a little padding between the top two languages, lang1 and lang2, for balance.

I also adjusted the Search Language button padding so that its height matches the the Search button height. I'm viewing all this in FF on Linux.

Please sync with template. Thanks, --Rogerhc (talk) 22:47, 21 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Dutch & Vietnamese edit

In the search language selector box, all language names are in the respective language (i.e. Deutsch instead of German), except for Dutch. I don't really see why (and I don't understand why it hasn't been corrected yet), so could Dutch be changed to Nederlands to keep it consistent? I changed it in the temp version. Thanks, SPQRobin (talk) 11:35, 22 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Apparently the new Vietnamese Wikivoyage is still missing, I added it to the selector, but it still needs to be somehow added around the logo. SPQRobin (talk) 11:43, 22 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
I have posted at vi:voy:Wikivoyage:Thảo luận#Adding this project to www.wikivoyage.org to make sure the translations are correct. Since this is the 15th project a lot of adjustments have to be made to the position. So I left is as it is until someone fix the positions or I will look at it later. --Glaisher [talk] 13:11, 22 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Okay, the position is kinda fixed now, but still it needs some little tweaks to be perfect. Now waiting for confirmation of the translations. --Glaisher [talk] 16:56, 22 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Original request done; Dutch changed to Nederlands. Agree the Vietnamese needs adding, but that I will leave for the translation checks, at least. Courcelles 15:38, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Icon or english text edit

I've realized that when I updated the main logo (with the new one) earlier I used the english version when it used to be the 'non text' version. I've updated it back to the icon/non text version since that's how it was before with the globe but wanted to see what others thought. I actually kind prefer using the text version, I think it fits better. Options:

Thoughts? Jalexander (talk) 06:57, 2 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

The no-text version is suitable only for favicons, in my opinion; it's just too different from the 'real' logo. LtPowers (talk) 14:24, 2 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
I agree with LtPowers. Additionally, we could get rid of the wordmark at the top since the logo would include it. We'd have to do something about the wordmark, because the font no longer matches Wikivoyage branding. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 23:07, 2 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
I like the text in the logo. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 09:46, 3 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
How abotu how it is on temp now? (go to page, choose 'preview html' from dropdown menu, sometimes need to refresh to see menu in the drop down). Jalexander (talk) 12:09, 3 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
That's much better - great job Jalexander! :) Would it be worth changing the background image as well? Perhaps to the one used on the Twitter feed or something similar? --Nick talk 13:44, 3 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Actually, cancel that. Having tried with other images, I think it's fine as it is. :) --Nick talk 13:50, 3 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Sync'd! Still not sure about the issue below this if that's fixed. Jalexander (talk) 15:23, 3 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Overlapping edit

overlap between "Cẩm nang du lịch" and "Ταξιδιωτικός Οδηγός"

Their is text overlap between "Cẩm nang du lịch" and "Ταξιδιωτικός Οδηγός".

Also, "Português" is much too close to "Travel guide", it reads like a single sentence.

Firefox 23.0 on Ubuntu 2013.04. Problem also reported by another wikivoyager at wv en. Cheers! Nicolas1981 (talk) 04:03, 3 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hmmm, odd, is it possible to grab a screenshot? Not seeing it on my version of FF (mac) though I could install a VM later if needed, may be a day or two because of the privacy policy rollout :( Someone else may be able to figure it out before then though. Also if you could check if it's any better with the test version (see above). Jalexander (talk) 12:11, 3 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Added screenshot. How to preview the test version? I only see HTML code with the links I have found above. Nicolas1981 (talk) 05:36, 4 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
To see the test version, go to Www.wikivoyage.org_template/temp, then select 'Preview HTML' from the drop down menu (the little triangle) to left of the Search box. If you are in Internet Explorer, you may need to lower your security setting for meta.wikimedia.org in IE's Security settings in order for 'Preview HTML' to show in the drop down menu (I had to). Rogerhc (talk) 23:50, 11 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I think maybe we're past the limit of language versions that can reasonably be distributed around the logo. All of the other projects keep it to their top 10. LtPowers (talk) 14:56, 4 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Maybe we should only list about 10 or so, and put the rest below? --Rschen7754 02:08, 6 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes, we have enough languages to do that now. Here, I gave it a go in the sandbox. Rogerhc (talk) 23:17, 7 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Looks good to me. --Rschen7754 23:28, 7 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
HTML seems fine. PiRSquared17 (talk) 23:39, 7 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Great job Roger! I'd be happy to see this implemented! --Nick talk 23:58, 7 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
One more thing though, when you resize your browser window to a very narrow width notice the new logo is in the wrong place, overlapping the Wikidata link at top left. We should fix that. I will give that a shot after dinner. Rogerhc (talk) 00:53, 8 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Fixed it in sandbox. Looks good in Firefox on Linux now at narrow "mobile" window widths. Please check it in other browsers and at narrow window widths. I'd like to get the Search box back in "mobile" (Search box is display:none at narrow window widths at the moment) but I'm out of time today. I may work on Search box for "mobile" window widths tomorrow. Rogerhc (talk) 06:33, 8 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Added Search box, in sandbox, to mobile (narrow windows widths) view. Looks okay, not great. At any rate, overlapping is now solved. See sandbox. Comments? Rogerhc (talk) 20:35, 8 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
It seems fine to me, but I only took a quick look. PiRSquared17 (talk) 14:16, 11 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Chrome adds extra search icon to input of type search edit

{{editprotected}}

Note extra search icon Chrome browser had added to left of search box.

Could an admin copy the test portal page to the live portal page again? Thanks.

Chrome browser adds extra search icon to HTML input elements of type="search". So I removed the type="search" attribute from the Search box input element. Now Chrome no longer adds this extra search icon. We don't want that extra search icon because we are using a search icon already in the Submit button that is flush right on the Search box. Remove "Tour Guide" translations and translations of "Wikivoyage"? edit

@Mxn: Hi. Are these changes (namely the removal of "Tour Guide" and "Wikivoyage" translations in the link title-text) intentional? What about the CSS indentation [tab] changes? PiRSquared17 (talk) 05:18, 5 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I'm just toying with various ideas at the moment. It'll be a while before I push anything live. Generally speaking, I'd like to align this portal's markup with the other portals' while keeping this portal's unique design.
To me, the tooltips don't add a whole lot: the slogans are already visible text for the top 10 languages, and the other portals use tooltips for romanizations. Romanizations make it clear to the user why a certain language appears where it does in a language list, since we sort the languages by autonym. They also help out users who don't have the necessary font for their language. (Typically, wikis with exotic font requirements have a prominent link in MediaWiki:Sitenotice or the main page.) Translated slogans and project names are more strings we have to keep up-to-date. Do you think we still need them for every language?
The tabs shouldn't matter because I'm minifying the CSS code whenever I copy a /temp page over to a live portal. Now that all the other portals have been modernized, their CSS can get folded into MediaWiki:Gadget-wm-portal.css. This portal uses an entirely separate stylesheet, but it would be nice if we could keep it as similar to Gadget-wm-portal.css as possible, so it's easier to diff and merge. Eventually, it would be nice to have a Lua module that takes the current contents of /temp and minifies the entire HTML code for us to copy-paste. That'd really cut down on bandwidth when you look at all the portals combined.
Feel free to make any changes you think are necessary. It's a /temp page, after all.
