Wikisource proofreading contests
This page provides a guide to the Wikisourcians interested in organizing and running a Wikisource proofreading contest (WPC) in their local Wikisource.
What is it?Edit
The Wikisource proofreading contest main idea is to offer people an incentive, in the form of a competition, to help Wikisource.
A basic Wikisource proofreading contest is organized as follows:
- during the contest people can help proofread and validate book pages on Wikisource.
- for each page either proofread or validated the participant gain points.
- at the end of the contest, a prize is awarded to the Wikisourcian with the most points. Second and third-place prize are awarded with a random drawing from all the remaining contestants: each point that you gained during the contest is like a lottery ticket, so the more points you have gained during the contest (that is, the more pages you have proofread or validated), the more chances you have to win.
On Italian Wikisource the contest is usually held in November, to celebrate the birth on the Italian edition of Wikisource (November, 24th). So in that case it is a "Wikisource Anniversary Proofreading Contest" (WAPC), which was the original name of this concept.
HistoryEdit
The section aims to capture all the proofreading contests held on various Wikisource projects. Feel free to edit existing or add missing proofreading events to this table.

How to organize your local Wikisource proofreading contestEdit
Organizing a Wikisource proofreading contest is very simple:
- put together an organizing team on your local Wikisource. We have tools that will help you with running the contest, but you will need at least 3 or 4 fellow Wikisourcian to effectively organize a WPC. These people should ideally be experienced Wikisourcians who know well the policies and customs of your local Wikisource, having local sysops or patrollers is of great help;
- decide when you will run the contest and publish in advance the detail of the rules on your local Wikisource;
- find some prizes to offer to the winners and/or participants, you may ask your local chapter to sponsor or finance the prizes;
- choose a set of books that need to be proofread and validated from you local Wikisource. Since the contest is centered around proofreading and validation you should choose books were almost all pages just need proofreading and validation;
- advertise the contest with your local community, you may ask to the sister projects' communities in your language and/or set up a CentralNotice banner;
- run the contest! (see below)
How to run your local Wikisource Anniversary Proofreading ContestEdit
Running a WPC is even simpler:
- Before the contest
- Gather the books to be validated or proofread and decide the prizes (which must be available before the contest)
- Decide the main rules of the contest (score table / involvement or exclusion of admins / arbitration committee / awarding the winners)
- set up the main page of the contest
- set up complimentary gadgets (barnstars, link to help pages for newcomers, more indexes to be added during the contest if needed)
- advertise the contest on other projects in the local vilage pumps, asking to put a link to the contest in the SiteNotice.
- During the contest
- You should check that pages are proofread and validated correctly, that is participants are not cheating by marking pages as proofread or validate without reading them. Your local patrollers and sysops should be able to recognize this behavior on sight. The system takes into account the possibility that pages are "demoted", i. e. they go from a higher completion status (like "proofread" or "validated") to a lower one.
- The tool lives at wscontest on wmflabs (source code on GitHub)
- After the contest
- All proofread books should be listed as a general accomplishement in a subpage of the main page of the contest
- All participants should be listed with their number of edited pages according to the rules
- The arbitration committee and a tech-savvy external user select the winner and the runner-ups
- announce the winners;
- award the prizes to the winners;
New toolEdit
This section needs to be written.
Legacy toolsEdit
Legacy code is also on GitHub)
We have created a tool called wscontest
on Wikimedia Toollabs to gather the tools needed to run a WPC.
They will consist of three main parts:
- the
votecounter
scripts, to count the points for each contestant; - the
ranking
script, to designate the winner (who has the most points) and to draw the second and third-place winners; - a simple page (see wscontest/website @ github);
How to run a contest using the legacy toolsEdit
During the contest:
- during the contest, you should check that pages are proofread and validated correctly, that is participants are not cheating by marking pages as proofread or validate without reading them. Your local patrollers and sysops should be able to recongnize this behavior on sight. The system takes into account the possibility that pages are "demoted", i. e. they go from a higher completion status (like "proofread" or "validated") to a lower one.
- The tool lives at wscontest on wmflabs ([https://github.com/wikisource/contests source code on wikisource/contests on GitHub)
After the contest:
- run the
votecounter
scripts, to count the points for each contestant; - run the
ranking
script; - announce the winners;
- award the prizes to the winners;
