Wikidata Items Wanting Photos
Background edit
Annually, the Wikimedia movement presents several Wiki Loves events to improve the quality of content on Wikipedia with meaningful images. In line with the above, significant success has been achieved on Wikipedia through the Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photo. However, there is no effort to find Wikidata items with photos on Wikimedia Commons that can improve such pages. This project tends to solve this gap.
The training and edit-a-thon will be divided into two:
- Virtual- 29th December 2021 (5pm WAT)- Platform will be sent to the successful applicants.
- In-person- 12th January 2022 ( TBD)
How to participate edit
Sign in or Create a New Account on Wikipedia, if you don't have any.
Enroll on the Wikidata Items Wanting Photos Dashboard to track your contributions. (Outreach Dashboard)
Join the Whatsapp group for onboarding, training and mentoring sessions. click Here to join
Activities edit
Participants will learn the following:
- The use of QuickStatement to import large photos and video to relevant Wikidata items.
- Run Spaql queries to fish out Wikidata items without photos.

Content gaps edit
- over 40 out of the 60 Monuments in this query lack photos
- 5 out of the 8 National Parks do not have images
- 280 item out of 283 Nigerian mountain do not have photos
- over 1400 items on Hills in Nigeria without Photos
- 2 out of the 72 items on Nigerian cities have photos or videos
