Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

Bad Bot - hiding discussions

Please don't archive / have your bot archive comments from pages that don't have any sort of archive box (search box and link to archives) on them! Or better yet, add {{Archive box auto}} to all such pages.--Elvey (talk) 20:53, 10 October 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for the suggestion - I created a phabricator task (phab:T148013) to discuss technical solutions. In the meantime, I am afraid it is necessary to manually add templates/links that navigate readers to subpages. whym (talk) 03:57, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

Bot down?

I see there have been no edits since 19 October. Perhaps it needs a kick? Thanks, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 05:06, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

ArchiverBot

Would it be possible to fix the bot to properly archive discussions closed using {{Discussion top}}/{{Discussion bottom}} if the closed area include discussion headers? Now it makes some mess, see my recent fixes in Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems/Archive 61 and Commons:ANU Ankry (talk) 14:03, 30 November 2016 (UTC)

I would suggest putting the templates inside the section, as in "==Header== {{Discussion top}} <!-- comments in the section --> {{Discussion bottom}}". Other than that, I don't see an immediate solution. You can try filing a task on Phabricator to see if others have ideas. whym (talk) 03:52, 3 December 2016 (UTC)

Wikispecies

Would it be possible for ArchiverBot to operate on Wikispecies, please? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:39, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

@Pigsonthewing: Sure, it's possible. Before proceeding, I would like to ask five things: local community consensus for runnig the bot, localization of the manual (if not yet available), the name of the marker template, ensuring no AbuseFilter affects the bot, and flagging ArchiverBot as a bot. Please see User_talk:Whym/Archive_1#ArchiverBot_on_es.wikiversity where I expanded on what I mean by these. whym (talk) 08:18, 14 February 2017 (UTC)
Thank you. I have started a discussion at species:Village Pump#‎Auto-archiving bot for talk pages. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:09, 14 February 2017 (UTC)

Wiktionary

Hello. The interwiki links on Wiktionaries are now automatically managed by Cognate, so it does not need to add IW links with Whymbot. Please disable you bot on this task. And then we can remove those links. --Octahedron80 (talk) 03:26, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

Interface editor

Would you please ask for global interface editor rights at Steward requests/Global permissions to handle some of phabricator:T164242#3230381? I understand you may not have much time for this, but even fixing just a handful wikis would be a big win. :) --Nemo 08:21, 3 May 2017 (UTC)

@Nemo bis: Thanks for the suggestion. I'll be mostly absent for a few more days, so let me think about it. I agree it might take a lot of man power. Perhaps we can send a message to affected wikis inviting them to check phab:T164242 and to try fixing by themselves (and to ask for help if unsure). It might be a good idea to add a clear guide on how to fix it with examples to the phab task (or maybe a wiki page). Also, based on his contributions on en.wikipedia, it would be fantastic if TheDJ can help with this by becoming a global interface editor. --whym (talk) 11:28, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
I think TheDJ is busy enough with the English Wikipedia alone, given the amount of users and scripts there. :D I sent a message to talk pages earlier and I plan to take care at least of the simpler gadget changes (see global editinterface flag request). Your help would still be very much needed. Nemo 11:51, 14 May 2017 (UTC)

Bot on nl.wikinews

Hello is it possible to run the archive bot on nl.wikinews.org for this page ? Thank you! Livenws (talk) 15:13, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

Help request for synonym labeling

@Whym: As you know, we are building a model to be able to do article section alignment across Wikipedia languages. I'm wondering if you can help us with a labeling task that will define the ground truth for a synonym detection algorithm. (Please be aware that clicking on the next two links will take you to a Google spreadsheet) The task and the instructions, in case you'd like to look into it. Also, if you have recommendations for who else can help us for Japanese labels, please suggest names in the Usernames sheet or to me. I'd appreciate if you let me know if this is something you can help us with, and as always, please don't feel pressured by the request. Only if you have time for it and can. Thanks either way! :) --LZia (WMF) (talk) 19:46, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

Hey Whym, do you plan to work on that task? If not I'll ask other people for help. :) Trizek (WMF) (talk) 10:10, 28 May 2018 (UTC)
@Trizek (WMF): I meant to do, but got distracted - I have just started working on it. One minor thing - could the rows be colored for better recognizability? I have a feeling that if odd rows are white and even rows are light-grey or something, it might help labellers. whym (talk) 11:27, 28 May 2018 (UTC)

User:Ymatsubara

Hi Whym, have you retired the use of the account Ymatsubara permanently? (Cleaning up the "researchers" group on enwiki). — xaosflux Talk 21:40, 1 July 2018 (UTC)

@Xaosflux: You are right. I don't plan to get it unlocked in near future. whym (talk) 12:14, 2 July 2018 (UTC)

WHOIS gateway returning 500 internal server error

Over the last several days toolforge:whois has been returning a blank response or a 500. Could you take a look? Thanks, MusikAnimal talk 19:25, 10 July 2019 (UTC)

@MusikAnimal: The web service had been down for some reason. I restarted it and it should be working again now. whym (talk) 03:41, 12 July 2019 (UTC)

Tool commons-app-stats doesn't work

Hello Whym, as reported on https://github.com/whym/commons-app-stats/issues/13 (also see https://github.com/commons-app/apps-android-commons/issues/3078), the commons-app-stats tool doesn't work. I would like to help with this issue, and for that, I would like to request maintainer permission on this tool (my Toolforge username is "urbanecm"). Please treat this message as a notification sent in accordance with Abandoned tool policy <https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Toolforge/Abandoned_tool_policy>, should you not reply to this message within 14 days. Best regards, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 09:43, 1 August 2019 (UTC)

Whois tool

Hi Whym,

It seems your Whois stopped working a few days ago. It only gives a 504 Gateway Time-out right now on every request you give it. Could you please take a look when you have time? --Wiki13 (talk) 13:58, 2 October 2020 (UTC)

Fixed! whym (talk) 12:29, 3 October 2020 (UTC)

Correspondence

Hi Whym! I'm writing you because I need to know your email address for future correspondence. I wish you well!

You can mail me @ vpadilla-ctr@wikimedia.org. Thank you!

--Glrdungan (talk) 01:51, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

@VPadilla (WMF): Was that your alternative account? In any case, Special:EmailUser/Whym should work for that purpose. whym (talk) 06:51, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

Universal_Code_of_Conduct/Enforcement_guidelines/Voting

Hello, I saw from past results that ja.wiki had a very low turnout. That's not unusual for ja.wiki, but are you aware of any effort to increase awareness about the vote and its relevance? Nemo 07:59, 19 January 2023 (UTC)

Speaking about myself, to be honest, I don't know if I noticed the second voting if not for your message. (Although it's possible that I closed a banner or two without thinking, or thinking that it was about the first voting.) I have checked emails, and apparently I did receive two notifications about it.
The page to which those notifications were sent to was split in September-October 2022 - the main inbox page now only accepts local messages. I imagine it might have reduced visibility of global messages (because not all would have noticed the split), but I don't know how I can verify. We have separate pageview counts for local and global after the split,[1] but I don't know what to compare. whym (talk) 11:59, 30 January 2023 (UTC)
