Hello, PayBackThyme. Welcome to the Wikimedia Meta-Wiki! This website is for coordinating and discussing all Wikimedia projects. You may find it useful to read our policy page. If you are interested in doing translations, visit Meta:Babylon. You can also leave a note on Meta:Babel or Wikimedia Forum if you need help with something (please read the instructions at the top of the page before posting there). Also worthwhile acquainting yourself with the functions of global user pages. Happy editing!

Re user page edit

A user page at Meta has the aspect of a global user page in lieu of a local page. They are to reflect one's work within the WMF set of wikis, and can contains some elements of the personal you. They would not usually be used as sandboxes.  — billinghurst sDrewth 09:42, 11 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Billinghurst (talk · contribs): You need to bear with me. As a layman, understood that User Page will be auto-created based on my contributions and activities. Initially I thought that I need to create my own User Page so that topics of my interest can be added which might help like minded people to mingle and contribute more effectively. I am at A B C stage so don't assume that I know those common jargons and particular those abbreviations. Still unknown things: "User Page at Meta", "WMF set of Wikis". Thanks for taking out your precious time to coach which might be quite annoying for you. I am sure it is matter of some time to get familiar. PayBackThyme (talk) 14:16, 11 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • User page --> User:PayBackThyme
  • User talk page --> User talk:PayBackThyme (this page)
  • WMF wikis = wikimedia foundation wikis (Wikipedia, Wikisource, wikinews, Wikidata, Mediawiki ... per https://www.wikimedia.org) all part of the single user login (SUL)
  • This wiki is metawiki/meta/m: (check url) and Main page, and is a coordinating wiki for WMF, rather than a content wiki like wikpedia, wikisource, etc.
  • A namespace is divided set of content usually for means of separating for topic matter, function, or searching, see Help:namespace.

Often you will find better help and guidance about the nuances of all at the bigger content wikis as they get new newbies and have catered their help content and have a larger support network.

A user page is manually created, though one created here at meta will show on each wiki until you create a local user page, eg. w:en:User:PayBackThyme (your user page at English Wikipedia), at which point the local page will show instead of this global page. Examples: user:billinghurst my local meta, and global page; b:fi:user:billinghurst that same global page as it shows at Finnish Wikibooks; s:en:user:billinghurst my local user page at English Wikisource. See also Help:User page

A user page is your expression to the wiki community

It is unusual to get new newbies at metawiki, they usually start at a content wiki, and end up here after a time when they start to go global, either through needing a global user page, global settings, or contributing to the foundation in a coordinating/administrative/volunteering type of function.  — billinghurst sDrewth 21:22, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
