Concern

I am somewhat concerned with the tone of the blocked user (same person, multiple accounts) who has been posting on my userpage (see [1]) The last blocked user's edit summary suggests they made some kind of personal threat against me ([2]). I am also seeing similar problems on my en.wiki userpage (note four blocked accounts vandalizing my page here). Is a rangeblock of the IP possible? Montanabw (talk) 20:14, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

@Montanabw: Severals accounts were created from the same IP addresses, but they are from different ranges, so a range block wouldn't be very useful. Matiia (talk) 02:17, 13 January 2018 (UTC)

Well, thanks for what you have been able to do. Can you block the IP addresses? They've done so on this user in the past over on en.wiki, where they've found at least 150 different accounts over the years. This sockmaster been bothering me over on en.wiki since I was one of the people who busted them for mass socking about 8 years ago(!) I think they might reactivate their socking whenever they move or change ISPs, they seem to go for long periods of time inactive and then suddenly crank up again. Help us design granular blocks!

Hello :-) The Anti-Harassment Tools team at the Wikimedia Foundation will start building these granular blocking tools in a few weeks and we've asked WMF designer Alex Hollender to help us make some wireframes so the tools are intuitive to MediaWiki users.

We have a first draft of how we think this tool should work. You can read the full proposed implementation here but here are the significant parts:

• Granular blocks (page, category, namespace, and file uploading) will be built on top of Special:Block. These blocks will function as if they were regular blocks and allow for the same options, but only take effect on specific pages.
• We will add a new checkbox for "Block this user from the whole site" which will be checked by default. When it is unchecked the admin will be able to specify which pages, categories, and/or namespaces the user should be blocked from editing.
• Granular blocks can be combined and/or overlap. (For example, a user could be simultaneously blocked from editing the articles Rain, Thunder, Lightning, and all pages inside the Category:Weather.)
• Only one block is set at a time, to adjust what the user is blocked from the administrator would have to modify the existing block.
• Block logs should display information about the granular block
• When a blocked user attempts to edit an applicable page, they should see a block warning message which include information on their block (reason, expiration, what they are blocked from, etc.)
• If a category is provided, the blocked user cannot edit either the category page itself and all pages within the category.
• If the File: namespace is blocked, the user should not be allowed to upload files.

We like this direction because it builds on top of the existing block system, both a technical and usability wise. Before we get too far along with designs and development we'd like to hear from you about our prosposal:

1. What do you think of the proposed implementation?
2. We believe this should be an expansion of Special:Block, but it has been suggested that this be a new special page. What are your thoughts?
3. Should uploading files be combined with a File namespace block, or as a separate option? (For example, if combined, when a user is blocked from the File namespace, they would neither be able to edit any existing pages in the File namespace nor upload new files.)
4. Should there be a maximum number of things to be blocked from? Or should we leave it up to admin discretion?

Then change the guidance, if it sits there as guidance and not the practice, then please fix it. If there is a practice please properly document so that the community can know the standards being set otherwise there is no ability to manage expectations and have accountability of actions.

FWIW I will dispute that this has always been the practice, though it may be the current practice. It is my opinion that a default practice like that is pretty much rubbish where subsequent accounts are not problematic. The practice pushes users to be problematic and to be part of the game. Request for IP block exemption

I’be been trying to edit the English Wikipedia from my phone over 4G recently, and due to my IP address range (2600:387:5:807:0:0:0:0/64), I haven’t been able to even when I’m logged in. I don’t know if you can grant IP block exemptions on the English Wikipedia, but if you can’t, can you please tell me whom I should go to? I’ve made over 10,000 edits there. Thank you for replying, but you missed the crux of the matter. I didn't open that request for 2 or 3 sockpuppets already blocked, I've opened it for other sockpuppets and for the sockmaster. In short I'm asking to: check if any other sockpuppets were created and used from the 4 proxy IP ranges I listed above that were blocked and that are linked to the already blocked socks (2 suspected accounts to start with are Fulgencio Kokomeci and MbretiBasha); ascertain that the sockmaster is user Ninonino (that wouldn't be difficult considering that I've listed a dozen of links proving the relation between the socks, the proxies, the IPs and Ninonino); taking the measures envisaged for this kind of abuse (which should be indefinite global blocks as it was done with Myeuurn and Baka Líte for the same reasons). WikiBlocks

Hi Matiia. Hope all is well. With a quick check you can notice that my global account has been repeatedly block on enwp, enwq, svwp from among others over the past few weeks. I believe that my account was hacked somehow so I'm asking for your help to unlock the blocks after reviewing my edit history. I also understand that WMF has suspended my CU access as a result - which is not an issue for now, but I'd like to appeal that after I clean my record here first. Is your account compromised (as you imply above), are you teaching a course, are you innocently caught in an autoblock, or otherwise what is causing this? adding this seems bizarre and when I undo it, I am also wondering why an experienced user will make such statements. Compromised account? Gosh, I checked zhwiki contributions and it's really vandalism and insults filled edit summaries. Indeed it might be advisable to change the account's password (in order to terminate the sessions of other possibly logged in users). Hi guys, this is Ciphers here. I noticed that my main account was blocked globally (which is probably a good thing, given the shameful edit log that I noticed), so I created this new account to help resolve the issue. I'd like to retain access to my main User:Ciphers account and remove all the blocks, and I'm happy to do whatever it takes to do that.
