James, meet user:Aurevilly. Copyright issues are on his todo list :-) Perhaps you could have a couple of relevant links for him ?

Later storyteller :-) Anthere

Sorry, for some reason I didn't get a notification of this and completely missed it when you wrote it to me. Now on my list of things to do :) Jamesday 17:38, 29 May 2004 (UTC)Reply

Derivative works don't have to contain the original work edit

It's incorrect to assume that just because a work doesn't contain an original work in whole or in part, it's not a derivative of that original. Many derivative works don't contain the original in whole or in part, such as translations to other languages, sequels to novels, etc.

On the more specific subject of "patches" or "diffs" -- "I have copyright to my edits and I can do what I want" -- I think it'd be hard to argue that MediaWiki contributors are in the business of publishing and distributing isolated, standalone patches. We edit pages in toto, and publish them as such. It's possible but not easy to get a history "diff" that doesn't include the work as a whole, or parts that existed before.

There is some limited precedent for exempting binary or source patches in software from a copyright holder's rights to control derivative works, especially when the patch fixes bugs or adds new features. However, the precedent only applies to distributing patches on their own. You still can't distribute a modified version of the original with the patch applied. That's what we do with MediaWiki -- distribute the article with the "edits" applied. I don't think the idea that "my edits" are not a derivative work holds much water. --Evan 02:23, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Of course it's possible to have derivative works as you describe. It's not inherently the case that all changes someone makes to something I wrote are derivative works of my writing, though. That depends on the specifics of the situation. A paragraph covering something I didn't write about at all could be one example of something which isn't really a derivative work if used elsewhere on its own - I wouldn't even consider taking infringment action against someone who did that.

Help please edit

Hello. Can you tell why "freewebpage\.org" is on the block list. It would be better to block specific freewebpage\.org user names as I can't put a link to my homepage on my user page as so many do. freewebpage\.org itself is just a free web page supplier like Yahoo. I left a note on the discussion page but no one replied. thank you. 217.204.65.210 21:42, 29 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Recurring vandalism on en.wiktionary.org edit

Hi James, I believe we have one person who already created three user accounts to come and vandalize Wiktionary with his disgusting goatse.cx image (I'm sorry I have to bring that up again. He does other stuff as well, which we can easily turn back, but these images are over the top). Is there a possibility to find out from which IP-addresses this person is coming and to block him that way? Since he creates user accounts, all we can do is to ban him, which is utterly ineffective since he can easily create another user account. I don't think there is a way for a moderator to find out what the IP address is that a logged in user is coming from, or is there? This is usually not necessary. If you do investigate it, maybe it's a good idea to check whether he is active on other Wikimedia projects as well.

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Vandalism_in_progress http://en.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&target=Mario_Dinis http://en.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&target=MyPecker http://en.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&target=JanDevries (apparently all he did as this user was deleted again)

I hope a solution for this problem can be found. Thank you Polyglot 08:18, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for looking in to it. I think
http://en.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&target=Bullwinkle
can be added to the list of accounts this guy created. Polyglot 10:31, 17 Jan 2005 (UTC)
James, somebody managed to create a user by the name of _:
http://en.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&target=%C2%A0
What can we do about this? I'm pretty sure you are not the person to bother about this. Is there somebody else I can approach, when something like this occurs? Polyglot 10:16, 18 Jan 2005 (UTC)
We have a vandal, who seems to be intimately familiar with how the wiki software works:
http://en.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&target=%C2%8F
He creates user accounts we cannot block and pages we cannot delete:
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Special:Undelete/%C2%AD
Is the English Wiktionary the only place where this lowlife operates? What can we do about it? Who can we contact about this? Thanks for an answer. Polyglot 16:22, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Our hello.jpg posting user returned, now anonymously: 128.39.243.220. I banned this IP for 10 days. Polyglot 09:49, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Now he created user VanVoort and hello.jpg is still his favourite. Is it really not possible to block it? Or to do something about this? This also seems his work: 207.234.129.95, 216.120.134.217. How he manages to have so many IP-addresses is beyond me, but the style is mostly the same. Maybe he controls some machine on the internet that are infected with Trojan horses. I guess we can't do anything about it in that case. It is getting more than annoying though. We can try to delete and revert everything he does. You could say that's our job as sysops, but this hello.jpg is over the top. Is it really not possible to do something about that? Polyglot 13:04, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Spam filter malfunctioning edit

The spam filter's on the blink again. Please see pornography addiction. Try to fix one of the links, and see what happens.. I had to change them all from http:// to ttp:// to get it to save, so they are disabled at the moment.69.243.41.28 02:33, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)

This is caused by the blacklist on any URL containing "porn.com", which matches the "no-porn.com" URL you were trying to save. Would it cause a problem to comment this one out? Silsor 03:52, Jan 29, 2005 (UTC)
Also the "setfreeporn.com" URL. Silsor 04:03, Jan 29, 2005 (UTC)

Comments on Meta nofollow edit

Hi James. I have added some comments on nofollow at meta which I thought I would draw your attention to. Google has offered the possibility for years for nofollow links through the syntax http://www.google.com/url?sa=D&q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.example.com so there was in my view no urgency for a sudden straw poll amongst developers on the issue. Also my vote count is that about 80% of the people on the straw poll think it should be reverted at least for en. I have also reverted many thousands of pieces of spam on different Wikis but I think both that you are wrong (that's discussed at nofollow) and that this wasn't a correct piece of behaviour by the developers --BozMo 09:58, 2 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Downtime notices on the foundation wiki edit

Hello, JamesDay, would you like to help us for making the recent downtime reports on the Foundation Wiki? I talked with Anthere (you remember this talk supposingly) and later with Jimbo, and we came to the conclusion we will provide information to visitors on the Foundation Wiki.

The site provides information to visitors in two places: Home page and "Current events". Would you give glances to Home draft and Current events draft? To both pages I wrote the place the downtime report would come. Would you make those notes within some days? Cheers. --Aphaia | WQ2翻訳中 | talk 15:27, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for your contribution, now we see it on the foundation wiki. As for your longer version, we have a question on translation. You refered to "the local law"; it meant the law of state of Florida Your clarification will be appliciated! --Aphaia | WQ2翻訳中 | talk 11:29, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hiya. Are you the uploader (original uploader...) of this picture ? (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image%3AData_center_1218_143155.jpg) or do you know if it is gfdl ? We lost the history of this picture in the process and are not sure of his status. Thanks. Anthere

Hello, JamesDay, would you like to help us again with your report on the latest downtime on March 17? We need a report in several lines as same as the long version on the February downtime for the WMF site (see Home). It will be used on the Main page and Wikimedia:Current events. Please post your submission to here. Cheers. --Aphaia | WQ2翻訳中 | talk 18:29, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)

See the terrible implications here... The more downtime, the more complaints and the more reports... think about it :-) Did not have news of your future employer yet. ant

Greetings, stats edit

There are discussions about what stats to gather about Wikipedia and edits and visits; and interest from some economists in Boston in supporting a dedicated stats maching and finding enthusiastic research assistants to help write and maintain stats scripts. Your feedback will be much appreciated; see w:WikiProject:Wikidemia, or leave me a comment on one of my talk pages. +sj+ 09:16, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Legal transwiki edit

Thank you very much for your recent work on Transwiki. I'm only slowly coming to grips with the amount of page history that's being deleted from the English Wikipedia as images are moved to Commons (and presumably in many other situations). I hope that you're keeping on top of this developments, because (like much of Wikipedia these days) it overwhelms me. -- Toby Bartels 21:09, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I just found w:en:Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons, so it looks like more people are aware. I feel better now! ^_^ -- Toby Bartels 21:40, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

averroes edit

Hi, James Day. Would you like to let us know if we are better to have avarroes as an article or take some links to this page at this moment? Some spammers incline to this page and ostinate to be spamming on it. And if you think it should be filled with a nice content, would you write some on averroes? By the way I'm afraid spammers soon find ariel or suda as their next target ... --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 07:27, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

confirm edit

Hi, this is FYI; on the page Meta:Administrators/confirm the confirmation procedure for you is currently active. Please also note the recent created page Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat. You can find it on the RC. Please put this page on your watch list. Meta e-mail edit

Hi! I'm contacting all the admins on Meta who (like myself until last week) have not updated/verified an e-mail address for their user account. If you have a moment, could you please update your preferences? - Amgine 23:50, 4 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Email contact edit

As you are admin on meta, I would like to direct your attention to this. Thank you, M/ 20:39, 12 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

password and bad email edit

Ah, how embarrassing. I've forgotten my wikipedia password. Unfortunately, the "e-mail new password" thingy doesn't seem to work. (I don't remember if I ever entered my email address in ... or perhaps I did but mis-typed it). I suppose I could just make up a new user account ... but that seems so wasteful.

Angela helpfully suggested "someone with at least shell access from the list of developers". I got your name from that list of developers.

Is http://david.carybros.com/ enough evidence that I really am David Cary, and the appropriate email address to use?

p.s.: I was using the same password for Wikibooks:User:DavidCary. Would you reset that one as well?

-- Wikipedia:User:DavidCary --70.189.75.148 05:18, 5 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Also please reset my Simple Wikipedia password. At least I remember my Meta password :-).

Forgive me for re-posting this here after posting at Wikipedia.

Your untagged files edit

Sources and licenses, please?

--Jusjih 21:53, 19 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've edited your comment so that images don't show, one is too large to be pleasant on a talk page. Reply re licensing on your talk page. Jamesday 04:59, 20 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much for your answer. Presumed GFDL is possible for earlier, so in case I cannot get any answer for File:Paullusmagnus-logo_(small).png I will also presume it GFDL while uploaded in 2003.--Jusjih 01:05, 21 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
