"Over one million speakers"

edit

Hi Kasper, I am not sure of the usefulness of an "over one million speakers" page. Although most requests are for languages that most people here have never heard of, probably about 70% of them are for languages with over 1 million speakers. Exceptions are for example Seeltersk, North Frisian, Ainu, Triestin, Tokelauan.

This reminds me of the argument a few months back on Wikipedia-l about closing of inactive Wikipedias.

Weeks into the argument, Jimbo made a statement "Well, of COURSE languages with over a million speakers will be exempted". But what he didn't realise is that the majority of inactive Wikipedias ARE those of languages with over 1 million speakers, and those which were proposed for locking at Inactive Wikipedias almost all have over 1 million speakers. The specific languages we were arguing about on-list all had over 1 million speakers. It just seems that people assume that, if they have never heard of a language, or if they don't know somebody who speaks it, or some other bad criterium, it must not be very widely spoken.

I was beginning to add all the languages with over 1 million speakers to the page you created, but I soon realised it was a pointless effort as the majority of the proposed languages already meet this criterium so there is no real need to "pull the needle out of the haystack".

It seems, however, that the most fuzz is being made about the small languages. So it might be 70% of the languages with 20% of the discussion. That makes it still very handy to follow. For instance, it lead to removing nonsense from a discussion. I don't really see many languages >10^6 right now when looking at the current languages at Requests_for_new_languages. Hey Guaka, How long were you thinking of presenting? Are you bringing materials that could be used for a standalone presentation, mounted on a table? If not, we need an updated outline of your presrentation to work with. Rock on, +sj | Translate the Quarto |+ 15:27, 19 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

ɔnsikopedi hɔrɔn

edit

Hi, I wanted to make a logo for bm: with the text "ɔnsikopedi hɔrɔn", but the 'ɔ's gave me trouble. Is it OK if they just look like mirrored 'c's? Jon Harald Søby (talk, contrib) 20:07, 23 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi, well, yes, I think that's fine enough for now :) Definitely better than the "The Free Encyclopedia" that's still there right now... Guaka 23:55, 10 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Media in Africa conference

edit

Hi Kasper, I left a note on the Media in Africa conference paper's talk page to say that I don't know if I'll be able to do much for this. The deadline for abstracts is a week and a half away (15th) so we'd need to get something "on paper" soon. I've got other work commitments at the moment so i can't devote lots of time to it but if you wanted to get some ideas and info down I could help out with editing, refining, proofreading. All the best in South America - I had a quick look at your blog - interesting! Cormaggio @ 09:02, 4 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

wo.wiki bureaucrat request

edit

Hi Guaka, please see Guérin Nicolas's request to be a bureaucrat on the wo wikipedia. Since you are the standing 'crat there, your input would be helpful. There have only been 5 votes in his nomination, which isn't quite enough for stewards to be happy resolving the vote. -- sj | help translate |+ 02:01, 22 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Good day, I'd thought you might be interested in the creation of Wikimedia Indigenous Languages, an international body for the coordination of projects for the development of Wikimedia projects in small and endangered languages. Amqui (talk) 17:38, 31 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
