How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Vandalism at Simple English Wikipedia

Hello @Billinghurst:, I'm an editor at the Simple English Wikipedia. We're having an issue over here with a vandal who is continually removing information about Hermione Granger from Harry Potter articles. Could you please indefinitely block this user [[1]] because we don't have any administrators online at the moment? Cheers, Hockeycatcat (talk) 06:24, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

@Hockeycatcat: You will need to ask a steward as global sysops have no advanced rights for simpleWP.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:27, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

Delete user page

When I edit user page User:198.17.32.0/24 about school district. You just delete user page. This is not avertisment. Is that user page User:198.17.32.0/24 was delete is out of scope? — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 198.17.32.159 (talk)

It is not a user page, please do not recreate it.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:11, 7 January 2022 (UTC)

2031-08 archive?

Well I'm asking problem regarding Talk:Spam blacklist/Archives/2031-08, for what reason we need an archive page with titled year 9 years after to-year? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 06:44, 11 January 2022 (UTC)

Clearly it was f-up in the archiving process. Please don't tell me the problem when there is a pretty evident solution. Anyway   fixed  — billinghurst sDrewth 09:29, 11 January 2022 (UTC)

AF 119

Hello. I think Special:AbuseFilter/119 needs a couple of tweaks in order to deal with this new trend. I tried something different but I did not succeed :-( Regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 19:22, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

Global Block Request

@Billinghurst: Block this IP range spamming on my talk page [2]. Thanks Slehertz (talk) 16:36, 21 March 2022 (UTC)

@Billinghurst: I am not a spammer. Slehertz is Susovan aka w:User:Blogs19. I only asked for help in Bengali language at the talk-page. Just see their wikidata contribution history of d:Q111285844. Please find evidences from global contribution history from Slehertz (talk • contribs • block • xwiki-contribs • xwiki-date (alt) • CA • gblock • ST • lwcheckuser) and Kroutdefer (talk • contribs • block • xwiki-contribs • xwiki-date (alt) • CA • gblock • ST • lwcheckuser) 2409:4061:81:B82C:B08A:E586:A35C:6942 18:17, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
IP address 2409... please don't edit on Slehertz's user talk page. Best you try for some separation. Slehertz, please do not ask for blocks on my user talk page, please use Meta:RfH.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:03, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

Question about mass deletion of pages in the Ladin Wikipedia

Dear @Billinghurst: I am Asenoner and an active user on the Ladin Wikipedia. I have recently created a few pages for calendar years (years of the Gregorian calendar) in the Ladin Wikipedia and several times I saw a notification that many of those pages had existed before and had been deleted by you in October 2020 as part of a mass deletion of pages created by 2600:1700:1E0:6B2F:FD26:36BF:FF4C:64A2. I wanted to ask if you could please clarify the reason for why you deleted these pages and generally what is happening here. Were these pages created by a bot and is that the reason why you deleted them?
I am just afraid that if I re-create these pages manually now, that you might one day delete them again. I would like to avoid that of course.
Thank you and best regards, --Asenoner (talk) 10:28, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

Bot and pointless. User was creating them xwiki. If a community creates them thoughtfully and with community consensus, then a global sysop wouldn't touch them.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:04, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

Your GIE request

Hi Billinghurst, would you review the oppose and possibly provide some context at Steward_requests/Global_permissions#global-interface-editor_and_abusefilter-maintainer_for_billinghurst_(2022)? — xaosflux Talk 14:14, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

Addressed.  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:20, 2 April 2022 (UTC)

Has this report lead to any further conclusions? It seems this IP user resumed activity after expiry of your 1 month block. --Vogone (talk) 16:01, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

@Vogone: Thanks for the contact, I had forgotten to get back there following the block expiry. There was no contact, which is unfortunate. I have been and tidied up, and blocked for an extended period. I also note 189.6.16.72, and think that it may be related, though will watch more closely.

I also see a little activity at tgwikt from one of the IPs which is probably related.  — billinghurst sDrewth 20:49, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

I see you blocked 2804:14C:6585:429A:E9B4:A405:E5FF:F8C0 on that wiki, but have not deleted (all of?) their recent contributions — specifically the ones from March 10th, which I'm pretty sure are the exact entries that caused the wiki to pass 30K again on that date (I announced it with no "reservations" because I forgot I had just questioned similar activity in that same wiki just the month before [as linked to by Vogone above]). Any particular reason you left those pages alone? - dcljr (talk) 02:17, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
Same goes for the following users on the same wiki:
These 5 IPs have been blocked as part of your March 24th block of "2804:14c:6590:8cec::/64" but their contributions from early January of this year have been left on the wiki. Have I just "jumped the gun" on this, and you're still in the process of deleting stuff over there? Or are you not sure they're actually the same person? - dcljr (talk) 02:33, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
Mass delete failed due to db error, and I didn't have the time to do singly. The older are not in RC, so cannot be mass deleted.  — billinghurst sDrewth 04:39, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
OK. So, should I request this at SRM? (You would have deleted those pages if you could have, right?) - dcljr (talk) 06:04, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
They are deletions that are going to need to be bot'ified or handled individually, which takes a little time and patience. These are shared tasks, so either at SRM, or a link to list at SRM are always an option.  — billinghurst sDrewth 09:38, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

I think I got caught up in this ip block Famouskiwi (talk) 20:50, 26 February 2022 (UTC)

@Famouskiwi: if you were editing from this account, that seems unlikely. If you weren't editing from an account, then I would suggest that you do.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:02, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

Abusefilter 103

Hello Billinghurst. In AbuseFilter 103, on line 8, the sixth text (name of a French luxury fashion house) creates false positives on fr-wp. I think it should be removed, as it's not enough specific.

Best, — Jules* talk 15:14, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

Template question

Hello!

Please let me know if this question is best redirected elsewhere or has already been explained, but I saw that you'd recently edited [[7]]. Is there currently an easy to pass all parameters from one template to another without specifying them one-by-one, kind of like *args and **kwargs in python? For instance, if I have some template called by parent|a=hello|b=world|c=my|d=name|e=is, I would like this parent template to be able to call child|**all_args** easily without needing to specify what a, b, c, d, and e are individually to child — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dragonoid76 (talk)

@Dragonoid76: Probably better to reference w:Help:Template or address yor questions to Mediawikiwiki. I am currently time poor.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:22, 26 July 2022 (UTC)

Subject of your block on Wikisource

Hello Billinghurst Pinging @Billinghurst,

I think my IP address has switched recently, and I noticed, while attempting to edit Wikisource, that I was not allowed to edit or log in with my account. The message stated that IP 2600:1700:0:0:0:0:0:0/32 was the intended blockee. The message also stated 2600:1700:2f00:cb60:2d3c:b939:bc27:9017 is my current IP. I knew I was not the intended subject, as I haven't edited in Wikisource before, but I would like to ask you to resolve this issue (not sure how admins do that).

I couldn't leave this on your talk page on Wikisource because of the block.

Thank you, Augusthorsesdroppings10 (talk) 17:05, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

@Augusthorsesdroppings10: Please try now.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:27, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: Works now, thanks!--Augusthorsesdroppings10 (talk) 18:34, 31 July 2022 (UTC)

‪Template:Discouraged

Shouldn’t it say 'Wikimedia' instead of 'Wikipedia', since we are on meta and not Wikipedia? Thanks. – Ilovemydoodle (talk) 12:11, 24 August 2022 (UTC)

If it was aimed at all Wikimedians then it would say Wikimedians. If the Wikipedians decided that it was Wikipedians, then it is Wikipedians. Don't presume to know what others think or are trying to say and double guess them.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:22, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
Well, I assumed the template was just directly copied from Wikipedia without a proper localization, so I tried to 'fix' it. – Ilovemydoodle (talk) 12:24, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
Don't presume.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:25, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
