@Abbad (WMF), yes yes, I support your consideration, and maybe make the lead section into hatnote? Ppl will read in local language (hatnote) what they can do, then add columns per language and add/revise on it as self-service. Is it feasible?
I am thrilled to see this format of working side-by-side as to edit the same table but on unique column. On the corner of my eyesight, the idea flickers why not a spreadsheet. Pro, sheets can be assigned per language, more intuitive to pick/create the right column per language. Con, maintaining is demanding hours?
My primary image of glossary building is not very sustainable, or if we are to ask a maintainer to receive local glossaries at first stage, convert/reformat each, and as the second stage, output on Meta:glossary page? Thirdly ppl will revise/add more terms on their columns? Like librarian receives donated books, and finish tasks before putting on shelves for everybody? (Nobody should write inside the books, tho! @Omotecho: Thank you for your quick follow up! I see that I have misunderstood you. Indeed, it makes a lot of sense to translate the first section (and not the table itself). It's now available to translate, and @YShibata (WMF) may also be able to help in bringing to Japanese.
I'm also happy to create a new column for Japanese, if you think it's useful. Just let me know. It does require maintenance, indeed, but we do have a dedicated Japanese language facilitator (Yumiko, tagged here) who, I believe, is already working on this, and thus may be able to maintain it.
If I understand you correctly, are you suggesting creating a specific page to collect community's suggestions for this glossary before adding them to the main table? I find the idea intriguing, but perhaps it could be more reasonable to do it on Japanese Wikipedia, so users are in a place where they are comfortable contributing? :) --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 11:04, 19 January 2022 (UTC).Reply
@Abbad (WMF), the Glossary building team on jawp is quite lucky to have Yumiko: We discussed we'd better open up the project to any jawp users and bring a place locally on jawp, so that it be much simple: whenever you wish to look up a glossary, you need not to go to Meta, which is rather a new-found land for Junior (and even Senior) editors: their hearts belongs to building Encyclopedia.
My ambition will remain that by finding Meta much accessible through shared local glossary, then more eyes will see how Meta is connected with local activities. Or comprehending the culture of Meta is an adventure the Glossary would be a much needed jumping board to access, as well as, you know, when you climb a tree, your eyesight expands wider/deeper/farther than 'old' or ground bound view.

Yes, if you would offer wikis/language groups with limited resources, a sandbox on meta where they ship their glossary and spend their time on their yearly tasks locally, that would be a great gift as glossary task and editing articles requires different sets of special talents: IMHO nevertheless they would need a glossary to bridge their project and Meat-WMF-2030 Strategy/Initiatives. The small team size at its start on local wikis can sustain without burning out.
I am sure jawp is among the luckiest wiki where we have forerunners on jawp-General Glossary for WMF. The turf is greener/flatter, and we have been focusing on 2022 Board election preps, as well as Grants for 2022 and Movement Initiatives, which Yumiko supported us to see as the nearest subject to reach out to. Very very blessed with those experienced on glossary building/terminology brains over here, with transparent facilitation by your team. @匿竜類: thank you for your question! For the time being, Vivien Chang and I would be sharing the responsibility to facilitate MSG works to the Japanese-speaking community. We are not native speakers of Japanese, so in the interim we will not be able to facilitate as deeply (and as good, I would say) as Yumiko, who is a native speaker. We should be able to share more about the next steps regarding our team's facilitation of the Japanese-speaking community in the near future, and we will make sure to update you in the good time. Switching language to English

All the Breton wikis (Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikisource) were consulted at the time of the decision. The Wiktionary and Wikiquote communities consist of members of the Wikipedia community and voted in favour of switching back to English, so I believe the switch should be made for them too. The Movement Strategy Forum (MS Forum) is a multilingual collaborative space for all conversations about Movement Strategy implementation. We are inviting all Movement participants to collaborate on the MS Forum. The goal of the forum is to build community collaboration, using an inclusive multilingual platform.

The Movement Strategy is a collaborative effort to imagine and build the future of the Wikimedia Movement. Anyone can contribute to the Movement Strategy, from a comment to a full-time project.

Join this forum with your Wikimedia account, engage in conversations, and ask questions in your language.

The Movement Strategy and Governance team (MSG) launched the proposal for this MS Forum in May. After a 2-month review period, we have just published the Community Review Report. It includes a summary of the discussions, metrics, and information about the next steps.

unable to login to discourse forum

I have a Wikimedia account already, my username is FRCTI and I signed up for the forum forum.movement-strategy.org, although now I can no longer login there. I receive the following error message:

Your Wikimedia email is associated with an existing account.

I have gone already in my Wikimedia settings and 'manage' then revoked the application; this didn't resolve the issue. I am using Safari and the latest version, maybe I am not the only one having this issue since I was able to login fine after I had originally registered.

Are you able to help me fix this? Please contact me back.

Hi, there is a FRCTl account that was created four days ago. It looks all ok on the forum. Can it be that you updated your email address but haven't verified it yet?
Otherwise, I don't know what could be the problem but try to do this:
1. Log off here on Meta.
2. Log on on Meta.
3. Go to the Forum and click the "Log in" button.

Re: Structural changes in WMF to support Movement Strategy going forward

Note: This post is a repost of my response to the Wikimedia Movement Strategy Telegram channel discussions regarding the structural changes in WMF to support the Movement Strategy, including dissolution of the Movement Strategy and Governance team published on the June 30, 2023

Thank you for inquiring into structural changes regarding the support to the Movement Strategy in the Wikimedia Foundation! It makes a lot of sense to have the rationale of some of these changes explained in this dedicated Telegram group.

Context

Over the last few months, the Foundation has made some structural changes that came about as a result of the annual planning process to create next year's plan. These changes were also the result of needing to reduce expenses by about $8M for the coming fiscal year because of the continued instability we’re seeing in the global economy. (You can find more information in the email our CEO sent out in April as well as in the Annual Plan. With this slower budget growth, we are still continuing to increase financial support (grants) to the movement, and we are not changing or reducing our commitment to movement strategy.

The plan states: “For the second consecutive year, the Wikimedia Foundation is anchoring its annual plan in the Movement's strategy to advance equity. Our intention is to connect the Foundation's work even more deeply with the Movement Strategy Recommendations in order to make even deeper progress towards the 2030 Strategic Direction. We remain driven to do this through collaborative planning with others in the Movement who are also implementing the recommendations.”

Actions

➼ We want to elevate the Foundation’s movement strategy work and provide more direct visibility to the Office of the CEO. Maggie Dennis, Vice President of the Community Resilience & Sustainability continues to be the person accountable for the Movement Strategy implementation, as previously. Now she works closely on Movement Strategy implementation work with the Foundation CEO, Maryana Iskander as a part of the Office of the CEO. I myself am working more directly and closely with Maggie, and we have dedicated support from other teams.

➼ Instead of a dedicated, yet isolated Movement Strategy & Governance team, we have changed the structure to better support the organizational goals and the movement strategy work. With this change, our goal is to provide better coordinated support to the movement actors working on Movement Strategy and link together different areas of experience and expertise. As a result, every department in the Foundation is mapping their work against the Movement Strategy. You can see these department and organizational goals and how they each relate to movement strategy recommendations in the annual plan.

➼ Now, there are several teams working to advance movement strategy work. For example, the Foundation’s Advancement department provides support through Movement Strategy Implementation Grants, capacity building through Let’s Connect program, and programmatic support through the Community Programs team. There is also a dedicated Committee Support team being developed in the Legal department to contribute to the success of different volunteer committees of our movement.

➼ Part of the structural changes has also focused on coordinating better our activities across community-facing teams and improving our support at the regional level. Overall, support to all the regions continues to be a focus of the Wikimedia Foundation as we move forward. While the layoffs were very hard, speaking especially as someone who worked directly with some of the good people we did not retain, the many remaining members of the team continue their work elsewhere. Being “community friendly” is a goal of the entire Foundation. It makes me truly happy to hear that this team was perceived that way, yet these people continue in that spirit with teammates across the Foundation who are equally passionate about community support.

Specific considerations

➼ Regarding the education program, the Foundation has been working closely with several major education stakeholders in the movement including the Wikipedia and Education User Group and WikiEdu to better understand education needs across the movement and what the roles and responsibilities of all the groups involved should be. Aligning to movement strategy recommendations #4 “Ensure Equity in Decision-making” and #5 “Coordinate Across Stakeholders,” we kicked these conversations off at the EduWiki Conference in Belgrade in May 2023 and are currently partnering with those two organizations to conduct research on next steps for the movement’s education strategy.

The Leadership Development Working Group has delivered the Leadership Development Plan, which was its core task. The focus will now shift to the implementation of the plan. We laid out some high-level thoughts about what implementation will look like in the Annual Plan: “We will build on our work with volunteers in previous years to define effective leadership in the Wikimedia Movement and support volunteers to identify their own leadership roles, capacities and aspirations. We will do this by launching a skills self-assessment, discussion guides, a WikiLearn module, and visual diagrams, informed by a Movement leadership development plan and supporting Affiliate and AffCom partnerships.”

[Inform before deleting] Purpose of Wikimedia

[Inform before deleting] Hello anyone who are reading it. Can I get a brief about purpose of Wikipedia foundation behind harassing a new users after inviting them with promise of cooperating in usership works? I am in confusion and I am unable to talk to anyone in Wikipedia and it's siblings as no one who are already in user space wants talk back, answer the question, guide straight way, engage in communication and show mercy on a user who are in mental, physical, social and critical distance enough to get finished due to cruel, harsh and ironic situation caused by Wikipedia's terror culture of work. I hope, either I won't get help nor I won't get help. Still I hope in both case.
