Overview
The Wikimedians of Kerala User Group has been actively engaged in various activities throughout this period, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and community building. The following annual report highlights the key events and initiatives undertaken by the user group during the period from October 2022 to September 2023.
This is the fifth year of the User group. This year user group don't have any kind of financial grants or donations to report.
Activities during 2022
Workshops and Edit-a-thons
Model Engineering College Wikimedia Workshop (16th October 2022)
The year we kicked off with a one-day Wikidata workshop at Model Engineering College, providing participants with hands-on experience and insights into contributing to Wikimedia projects as part of the annual tech-fest at college name, DevSprint.
Discussions
Movement Charter Conversations (4th December, 17th December 2022)
An essential milestone in aligning with the broader Wikimedia movement, the draft discourse event facilitated discussions on shaping the future strategy.
- The user group members participated in the first Movement Charter Conversation which was held online on 4th December 2022 by MC ambassador Akbarali. The meeting was held for an hour.
- The second Movement Charter Conversation was held on Saturday, 17th December 2022 at PG Centre, Thrissur, Kerala and the user group members participated in person. The documentation can be seen at here and here. The individual grant report by Akbarali can be read at here.
Celebrations
Wikidata Birthday Celebration (29th October 2022)
We celebrated the 10th birthday of Wikidata on 29th October 2022 by discussing and contributing to the Wikidata. The event was held at Kerala Museum, Edappally, Kerala. Adithya K, Jinoy, Ranjithsiji and Vis M joined the event at in-person.

Workshops and Edit-a-thons
Open Data Day 2023 events (10-11th March , 27th March 2023)
The Wikimedians of Kerala UG actively participated in the International Open Data Day celebration.
- Organizing an 48 hours edit-a-thon on Wikidata to promote open data initiatives on 10-11th March 2023.
- A full-day hands-on workshop about Wikidata and the importance of structured open data was organized on March 27th 2023 at NSS College of Engineering, Palakkad to promote and raise awareness about the benefits of Open Data. The User Group and Sahya Digital Conservation Foundation members lead the workshop as part of Techno- Cultural fest Dyuksha'23, in association with FOSSNSS club. 45 students joined the edit-a-thon. Wikipedia workshop on Women's Health (5th April 2023)
A Wikipedia workshop was organized by Malayalam Wikimedia community on the theme of women's health. The user group members participated in the event held at KITE Office Thiruvananthapuram. Focused on creating awareness and enriching content related to Women's Health on Wikipedia, this workshop helped in creating and updating articles in mlwiki. Students Datathon on Commons (17th April 2023) (Dubai)
A Datathon program for senior school students at Indian International School in Dubai was conducted on 17th April 2023.
Wikidata lexeme live editing (18th June 2023)
An interactive Wikidata lexemes session focused on live editing of Wikidata lexemes, providing participants with practical skills was organized on 18th June 2023.
Lingua Libre workshop (25th June 2023)
The workshop on Lingua Libre project and tool was organised by tthe user group for the community members om 25th June 2023. A short guide for Lingua Libre recording with words with Wikidata SPARQL query was given to the participants to contribute. 9 members joined the edit-a-thon.

Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University wikimedia workshop (11th July 2023)]]The one-day Wikimedia workshop was held at Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University, Tirur, Kerala, India on 11th July 2023. The oxford School Wikimedia Education Programme (12th July 2023)Wikimedia Education Programme that took place at The Oxford School, Calicut, Kerala on 12th July 2023. The Springs International School Wikimedia Education Programme (27th July 2023)On the 27th of July 2023, a one-day Wikimedia educational program was conducted at The Springs International School, Nilambur, Kerala. This event aimed to introduce students and teachers to the Wikimedia ecosystem Wikimedia Education Programme at Face Campus (5th August 2023)A one day Wikimedia education programme was organized on 5th august 2023, Kodiyathur, Calicut. Wiki stall at Freedom Fest 2023 and Wikimedians of Kerala meetup (13 August 2023)
The Malayalam Wikimedians organized a meetup, which took place on the 13th of August 2023, at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. This event was organized as a component of the esteemed Freedom Fest ( Free Software event) an initiative by the Government of Kerala, with the objective of fostering discussions on inclusivity and access in the development of a Knowledge Society. Wikimedia volunteers from various parts of the country attended the event.[2]

The Wiki Loves Onam campaign was an pilot initiative that aims to capture and celebrate the essence of the vibrant and culturally significant festival associated with Onam in Wikimedia projects (Wikipedia, Commons, Wikidata, Wikibooks). The campaign tried to document information ranges from the historical significance of the festival, encourages participants to capture high-quality images of various aspects of Onam celebrations, arts and dishes, updating Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikidata articles related to Onam.
Train-the-trainer
Train the Trainer Program 2023 (29th September - 1st October 2023) - event page
Wikimedians of Kerala UG had the privilege of co-hosting the Train the Trainer (TTT) residential training program designed to nurture leadership skills among members of the Indian community partnering with the Centre for Internet and Society-A2K. The event took place in the vibrant city of Kochi from September 29 to October 1, 2023. Through our co-hosting role, we aimed to enrich the event with our collective expertise and commitment to advancing training and educational initiatives within the Wikimedia ecosystem.

Users Akhilan, Gnoeee and Tony Antony joined in the event from the organizing team and Meenakshi Nandini, Ranjithsiji and Viz M participated in the event as participants.
In our commitment to environmental responsibility, we made a conscious effort to reduce the utilization of plastic materials during the TTT. Thank you CIS-A2K team for considering Wikimedians of Kerala UG's request on this matter. Mindful of the impact of plastics on our environment, and alignment with our sustainability initiative we took proactive steps to minimize their presence in crucial event elements such as standees, ID cards, and file folders. Representation in Conferences
WikiConference India 2023 (28-30th April 2023)
Our user group, consisting of dedicated and enthusiastic members, actively participated in the prestigious Wikimedia national-level conference held in the vibrant city of Hyderabad, India, from the 28th to the 30th of April 2023. This national-level event provided a unique platform for our members to meet, connect, and share stories with other Wikimedians. Engaging in a myriad of insightful sessions, collaborative discussions, and networking opportunities, our members contributed significantly to the discourse on the future of Wikimedia projects and initiatives. User:Gnoeee and User:Netha Hussain was part of the volunteer organizing team.

EduWiki Conference 2023 (26-28th May 2023)
User:Akbarali participated in EduWiki Conference representing Wikimedians of Kerala UG which was held at Serbia from 26–28th May 2023 and presented a talk on 'Wikidata in Secondary School Classrooms'.
Wikimania 2023 (16-19th August 2023)
Our user group members had the privilege of attending Wikimania 2023 in Singapore inperson. User:Manojk and User:Gnoeee took the initiative to self-fund their participation, demonstrating their commitment to the community and represent our user group. Additionally, User:Netha Hussain & Santhosh Thottingal (WMF) also from Malayalam Wiki community attended Wikimania 2023. Their active involvement and personal investment contribute significantly to our collective engagement with the broader Wikimedia community.[3]
