Open Data Day is an annual event celebrated worldwide to promote and raise awareness about the benefits of Open Data. Open data and Wikidata are closely related as Wikidata is a free and open knowledge base that provides structured data that is available under an open license.

A full-day hands-on workshop about Wikidata and the importance of structured open data is organized at NSS College of Engineering, Palakkad to promote and raise awareness about the benefits of Open Data. Wikimedians of Kerala User Group and Sahya Digital Conservation Foundation (OpenDataKerala Project) members will lead the workshop as part of Techno- Cultural fest Dyuksha'23, in association with FOSSNSS. The workshop will end with an Edit-a-thon.

editThe Wikidata Workshop and Edit-a-thon was conducted at NSS College of Engineering, Palakkad, as part of the Techno-Cultural fest Dyuksha'23. The event aimed to promote and raise awareness about the importance of structured open data and its applications in various domains. Organized by the Wikimedians of Kerala User Group and Sahya Digital Conservation Foundation, in association with FOSSNSS, the workshop provided a hands-on learning experience for the participants.
The full-day workshop was designed to introduce the participants to the concept of Wikidata and its significance in the world of open data. The sessions were led by experienced members from the Wikimedians of Kerala User Group and the Sahya Digital Conservation Foundation.
The workshop covered the following key topics:
- Introduction to Wikidata: The participants were given an overview of Wikidata, its purpose, and its role in the Wikimedia ecosystem. They learned about the collaborative nature of Wikidata and how it enables the creation and maintenance of a structured and linked database.
- Data Modeling and Structured Data: Participants was trained on how to create and edit items, properties, and statements within the Wikidata platform. They also explored the concept of structured data and its advantages in ensuring data integrity and interoperability.
- Open Data and Its Applications: The importance of open data was emphasized during the workshop. The participants gained insights into the potential applications of open data in domains such as research, journalism, and public policy. They also learned how Wikidata acts as a central hub for storing and accessing open data.
- Edit-a-thon: The workshop concluded with an Edit-a-thon, where participants had the opportunity to learn how to edit Wikidata and contribute. They actively contributed to enhancing and expanding the data available on Wikidata by adding and editing relevant information. This hands-on session allowed participants to engage with real-world data and experience the collaborative aspect of Wikidata.

The Wikidata Workshop received an enthusiastic response from the student community, with 45 participants actively taking part in the event. The sessions were interactive, encouraging active engagement and participation from the attendees. The facilitators ensured that participants had access to the necessary resources and tools to explore and contribute to Wikidata effectively.
Throughout the workshop, participants were encouraged to ask questions and seek clarifications, fostering a dynamic learning environment. The hands-on activities provided an opportunity for participants to apply their knowledge in a practical setting, enabling them to gain confidence in utilizing Wikidata.
