Wiki for Minorities
Wiki for Minorities (WfMin) is an initiative that arises in the line of collaborative work for the protection of cultural rights, the preservation and dissemination of expressions of the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of cultural minorities subdivided into three large minority groups: national or ethnic, religious and people with disabilities, among other minorities or marginalized groups that may appear. These minorities also include linguistic rights and can be aboriginal minorities as well as migrant minorities. Initially the project was named "Wiki Loves Minorities", however by consensus among the first supporters, it was decided through the march to rename on October 20, 2023 to "Wiki for Minorities", giving a broader meaning to this collaborative work.
Approach
Historically and in certain places and times, minorities have suffered, for different reasons, persecution, marginalization, and invisibility by groups that concentrate political and economic power. These have ranged from restrictions on the freedom of expression and worship of minority groups, the prohibition that minority groups can freely practice some of their traditions that do not mean any type of harm to the rest of the inhabitants of a country or territory, to segregation and genocides where entire groups have been executed and disappeared just for being the way they are.
Various international organizations are working on these issues, such as UNESCO, the organization that established the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, as well as the United Nations, who declared May 21 as the "World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development", among other initiatives; as well as the United Nations Human Rights Council, which establishes specific activities to work with minorities.
From the wiki movement we can contribute in various ways to meet our objectives, achieving more equitable and inclusive societies that accept cultural diversity as an enriching element. For such work, concepts such as social integration, diversity, tolerance and intercultural dialogue must be basic principles.
We can divide our work into three activities:
- User visits to organizations that promote and preserve content about minorities and are in favor of free knowledge, for example some GLAM institutions;
- Edit-a-thons and Hackathons to promote content about minorities in the different wikis;
- An international photo contest and organize activities with user groups and chapters interested in participating to take and upload photographs and multimedia content within their contexts about local minorities, such as photo walks.
If you have any questions or longer additional comments, please feel free to leave a feedback on the discussion's page. We invite you to join this project!
Why get involved in WfMin?
- It is a project designed at a global level with dynamic activities, replicable to each regional/national reality and specific context. In other words, you are welcome to contribute content locally, but also regionally or globally without distinction.
- The versatility of the activities mentioned in the different Wikimedia projects allows the user to work in their area of interest, based on their own possibilities and managing their own time. Users can join one or more activities without limitations or propose a new one. Activities can be carried out by one or more users, without having to gather a large number of users to do so. Motivation and perseverance are the key and we do not want the flame to go out in favor of free knowledge.
- The topics are relevant to what we consider urgent in working with minorities and one relevant thing is that many of them intersect with each other and give users the freedom to choose their own topics to work on without leaving our framework and scope.
Working groups
The working groups are initiatives created by the users who are members of the project, framed within our topics we are working on. Any user is free to join any of the working groups, without limitations. Anyone can create a workgroup and new ideas, creativity and enthusiasm from all users are always welcome. The current active working groups are the following:
- Religious Minorities and Underrepresented Spiritualities
- Minori-Ties Programme: related to work with immigrant communities and linguistic minorities within a country or territory.
- Disabili-Ties Programme: aimed at working on disability issues in the world.
Groups
- Wiki for Minorities in Middle East Group: It is a specialized group, working to expand knowledge about minorities in a way that suits the specificity of Middle Eastern societies and cultures.

- Strong support, any project designed to enhance the representation of minority topics on the Wikimedia project has my strong support. This initiative is particularly significant for Nigeria as it has the potential to promote its unique diversity and inclusivity, which are crucial values for a thriving and harmonious society. By providing accurate and comprehensive information on the experiences and struggles of minorities, this project will raise awareness and challenge the stereotypes and biases that often marginalize these communities and will serve as a platform for minorities to share their stories and perspectives, which will enrich our understanding of Nigeria's cultural and social landscape. Overall, investing in this project is a positive step towards building a more equitable and just society on the internet and the Wikimedia projects. Kaizenify (talk) 16:18, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

- Strong support Wiki for Minorities encompasses the vision of PhilWiki Community. Speakers of indigenous minority languages in the Philippines are declining due to systemic marginalization. We aim to promote and increase the daily use of Philippine languages and deploy Wikipedia as a resource and medium for the dissemination of open knowledge and learning through their languages. By giving these regional languages an internationally recognized and prestigious platform for their users, PhilWiki Community hopes to raise their profiles and remove any stigma attached to speaking and using them. --Maffeth.opiana (talk) 15:23, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
