License
editHi there, please be so kind to add license info to this file uploaded by you. --MF-W 01:45, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
- How do I do that? The standard upload functionality didn't let me choose a license. Yaron K. (talk) 02:02, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
- Simply choose one from Category:License templates. You can also add {{information}}, like on Commons. --MF-W 02:23, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
- Okay, done. Thanks for the info. Yaron K. (talk) 00:08, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
Data browser, SemanticTrees, and Outlines
editHi. I saw your Grants:IEG/MediaWiki data browser proposal, and was pleased beyond words. I'd like to offer some tangential thoughts, and ask a few questions.
I've long wished to help build visual interfaces, for keywords (core vocabulary) in all topic areas.
Something that looks like a cross between File:Main_Page_Usability.png and en:File:Dhamma_Chart_in_English.gif
A a cross between a SemanticNetwork/MindMap and a LayerChart (http://www.visual-literacy.org/periodic_table/periodic_table.html)
Something that zooms like Googlemaps, to get to the deeper keywords (to prevent overwhelming visual chaos).
E.g. So that, if I type in "isobathytherms", the data browser finds that keyword in the article en:Contour line, and highlights a path to that node, from the root node, via Natural sciences->Earth sciences->Cartography.
E.g.2. If I overhear someone talking about "Kerning", my GoogleGlasses can highlight that word at the end of a path from Art->Design->Typography->Typeface Anatomy.
As sources of data, I've been thinking about 3 sets:
- Categories
- Navigation templates (eg. en:Template:Typography terms)
- Outlines and Glossaries (eg. en:Outline of forestry)
I'm particularly interested in whether the Outlines might be able to be used (somewhat easily/automatedly) as a source of data, as they inherently have a semantic structure, with headings and indents denoting relationships. eg en:Portal:Contents/Outlines
Does any of that resonate well, for your own project?
I look forward to seeing the ripples that flow out from your work. Best wishes, Quiddity (talk) 03:38, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
- Hi - thanks for your interest, and your encouragement. This project isn't about outlines, though - it's about structured, non-hierarchical data. So the mind-mapping stuff wouldn't be relevant, I don't think. But we can discuss once the first version of the software is released - everything will make more sense at that point, hopefully. Inspire Campaign on content curation & review
editI've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.
All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:38, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.
Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,
