Subscribing the CU mailing list edit

Hello Trijnstel, long time no see. how's it going? Due to my dawdling(Confidentiality agreement signing :p), I had lost CU tool. I signed it and was re-granted tool box. The policy indicate that I should subscribe the mailing list, so I request subscribing and CU wiki account unblock. I am sorry to sound rude, but don't know anyone else related to CU without you, I leave the message here. Thank you and have a good time. --Sotiale (talk) 11:05, 23 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Sotiale: all   Done now (subscription to the mailing list, the cu wiki and access to the irc channels). Welcome back! Trijnsteltalk 16:47, 23 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Request edit

Hi dear Trijnstel, please look this discussion User talk:Taketa#Request (2), You are help me?--6AND5 (talk) 12:30, 28 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

@6AND5: For the record, I've seen this question, but I believe stewards can't assist here. As the Armenian Wikipedia doesn't have an Arbcom, it might be wise to start an RFC (requests for comment). After consensus stewards can close the discussion and (possibly) enforce the decision. With regards, Trijnsteltalk 18:37, 11 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I opened page the page here - Armenian users who want to have removed the indefinite block with the user:6AND5 in the Armenian Wikipedia--6AND5 (talk) 20:09, 11 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • Trijnstel, in your opinion, this list something changes?--6AND5 (talk) 11:28, 19 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
    • To be honest, not really. It's just a list of users who support an unblock of your account, instead of an official RFC. Like I said: please open an RFC - see requests for comment - where people can comment. That means people who support an unblock, but also those who support a block. But this single list isn't enough to get your block undone. As such I agree with Taketa and MarcoAurelio: "Stewards are no arbitrators and this needs to be solved locally IMHO." Hi 6AND5. I really get that you want to be unblocked, but I hope you will also understand I can't do anything right now. The decision, with the lack of a Dispute resolution committee, needs to come from the local community. I still think the best option is to talk with the person who blocked you, or otherwise please try to find other local admins who might be willing to help you. And if someone is receiving threats just because they want to help you (remember: I don't know the whole situation etc), then it might be wise to have the situation on hywiki discussed as a whole. BTW: multiple users have blocked you in the past... and Google translate gives me "abuse and threats" as the block reason. Is that correct? Sorry I can't be of much more help... I really wished I could help, but with regards to local problems I really can't. Trijnsteltalk 00:09, 2 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Threat is a lie. Insult - yes, but these were the responses. In addition, I apologized to everyone, but they are in front of me - no. They think it's okay to insult me.--6AND5 (talk) 09:12, 2 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Blocked edit

Hi Trijnstel, You have blocked me: «Der angegebene Grund ist Open proxy. Beginn der Sperre: 22:41, 21. Jan. 2016. Ablauf der Sperre: 22:22, 21. Jan. 2017 … Deine aktuelle IP-Adresse ist 64.62.219.72 und der gesperrte Bereich ist 64.62.128.0/17»

There is no reason to do this. I cannot see anyone. There are no problematic edits. Please end this harassment. -- 64.62.219.72 21:21, 6 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

The IP address you are using is a proxy which does not record source addresses, which is not allowed on WMF projects. It is blocked for a year. Try logging in or editing from elsewhere.   — Jeff G. ツ 00:56, 7 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
What the hell is "proxy"? I am not a computer expert. Use common words. I edit logged in or anonymus, I do that in articles with which I don't want to be recognized e.g. sex or v.i.p.s. I never have had written anything wrong or injurious. This is my only IP. Why do You block 64.62.219.72 when 64.62.128.0/17 is the problematic range? -- 64.62.219.72 13:47, 11 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Trijnstel, You have blocked me: [ToranL7231]. "Your IP address is in a range which has been blocked on all wikis. The block was made by Trijnstel (meta.wikimedia.org). The reason given is Open proxy. Start of block: 21:41, 21 January 2016 Expiry of block: 21:22, 21 January 2017

I haven't been on wikipedia for a couple months now. So, why exactly did you block me for a year. I ask for you to pardon whatever I could've possibly done: Open Proxy. I am a loyal, truthful user. I only edit/create pages with true and detailed information. - Toran 16:12, 6 February 2016

Hi Toran. Apologies for the delay; I have been busy lately. I believe this is about two things: 1) a block you've been stuck in and 2) your account has allegedly been hacked. Regarding the block: it's indeed an open proxy block. That means it's nothing personal, it's just the way your computer has been configured. Please read our policy on open proxies. The block is anon-only, which means you shouldn't face any problems while logged in. But, if you didn't intend to use an open proxy, your browser might have enabled one as the default network connection setting. Changing the settings to "no proxy" should immediately lift the block. If all of this doesn't work, then you may wish to request a global IP block exemption. I would advice you to do that logged in with your account, User:ToranL7231, otherwise we can't prove it's really you. If you forgot your password, then use a password reset. It's also possible to send an email to us via stewards wikimedia.org or Special:EmailUser/Stewards. Trijnsteltalk 18:37, 11 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hello edit

Hi, Trinjstel. How are you? You manually added a user here. However, it is necessary to wait for the bot to add users which need to be checked there. Otherwise it will not work properly. :) RadiX 15:22, 20 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hmh, okay, didn't know that. But the user itself already made a mistake while voting, [2], incorrectly changed by Alch Bot [3]. That's why I manually changed it on the voting page [4]. I didn't know whether the bot would pick this vote up, which is why I also added it manually to the check page. But feel free to correct if that was wrong of course. Trijnsteltalk 15:46, 20 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I already noticed that. But if you add it manually there the bot will not automatically detect the user. Thanks. RadiX 15:52, 20 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

2A01:4F8::/29 block edit

Hi! The block is very wide, it encompasses, perhaps, all servers offered by Hetzner, where people may host personal VPNs or whatnot. Hetzner offers a /64 per one server. So I believe the block granularity should be /64 instead. --WGH (talk) 16:58, 27 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi WGH. You might be right, but on the other hand I certainly must've found abuse on multiple ranges which is why I probably enforced this block (I don't know the reasoning about it anymore since it's done in 2014..). But I'm open for ideas of course. Do you have a connection with Hetzner maybe? If so, then we would very much like to cooperate with you. Could you please send an email stewards(at)wikimedia(dot)org? Also: this block is anon-only, so only not logged in users are affected by it. Trijnsteltalk 00:36, 2 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
PS. I see there has been recent abuse coming from it, so I'm not inclined to unblock it unless I get cooperation from Hetzner. Trijnsteltalk 00:39, 2 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Confirmation discussions edit

Dear Trijnstel,

As you probably know, the confirmation discussions for Stewards have been closed. In order to determine the outcome of these discussions, you are invited to comment on Talk:Stewards/Confirm/2016 before scheduled closure of the confirmation section "one week after the appointment of the newly elected stewards" (Sunday 6th of March, 17:22 UTC), though the closing time might be extended at the ElectCom's discretion for an extra week if it is believed "further input is required before concluding". All stewards are welcome to comment, including those newly elected.

For those who ran for confirmation, consider revising comments regarding you, and replying to those where appropriate. Savhñ 08:01, 4 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Request for Input - New Central Notice request process edit

Hello!

Back in February I emailed the CN-admin list regarding part of my role to look into the Central Notice process and see where we could make improvements including: the campaign process; its functionality or lack thereof; and fundamentally the documentation that supports it. You can see many of the issues that I identified at CentralNotice/Process_Review. If there is anything additional that you feel has been left out then please feel free to leave any comments on the talk page.

My first task is to improve the requesting of campaigns by communities and affiliates. I am looking to set up a more formal request process, similar to those used in many projects. The aim is to: increase the transparency of Central Notice; improve the support provided to affiliates (including making such support more consistent); to provide a forum for community input into campaigns.

I have been working on a very rough strawman version of the process and I would be interested in hearing you comments about what such a process should involve and what you think it would require. Please feel free to leave such comments at the process talk page section. I would like to have a working page in place by the end of May. This would not need to be a final version. The process can be improved upon over time as we learn about how well it works.

Given your role as a Meta Administrator who is active in the area of Central Notice, I encourage you to:

Regards

Block of IP range from a period that I didn't possess it edit

Dear Trijnstel, i get the following

Your IP address is in a range which has been blocked on all wikis.

The block was made by Trijnstel (meta.wikimedia.org). The reason given is Open proxy: extended as it was abused right after the previous block expired.

Start of block: 19:50, 23 September 2014 Expiration of block: 19:50, 23 September 2016 our current IP address is 2a01:4f8:190:21f3::2, and the blocked range is 2A01:4F8:0:0:0:0:0:0/29.

Hey, thanks for blocking the subnet I'm on. I think you made a mistake, since haven't yet blocked the whole internet and so it's still possible that someone might actually be able to use or contribute to Wikipedia. Particularly enjoyed was the part of the "No Open Proxies" policy that acknowledges that it's problematic for users in China, while not actually suggesting any solutions. Thanks for that great big "fuck you." I obviously won't be contributing edits or money in the future.

I'm not using an open proxy edit

I can't put this on my user page because I'm blocked from editing it:

You do not have permission to create this talk page, for the following reason:

Your IP address is in a range which has been blocked on all wikis.

The block was made by Trijnstel (meta.wikimedia.org). The reason given is Open proxy.

Start of block: 21:41, 21 January 2016 Expiration of block: 21:22, 21 January 2017

You can contact Trijnstel to discuss the block. You cannot use the "Email this user" feature unless a valid email address is specified in your account preferences and you have not been blocked from using it. Your current IP address is 64.62.133.42, and the blocked range is 64.62.128.0/17. Please include all above details in any queries you make.

I have checked to make sure my browser is configured not to use a proxy. I don't think this is an open proxy as I understand the definition: It's a connection at a residential building that's available to residents of the building. 64.62.133.42 05:51, 24 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

@64.62.133.42. Actually, according to my information this is an open proxy. A webhost to be specific. If you didn't intend to use an open proxy, your browser might have enabled one as the default network connection setting. Changing the settings to "no proxy" should immediately lift the block. I too have over the last 2 days encountered this problem, it will last only for a short while (so far), I too use a direct connection and the two different IP ranges aren't even close to my IP, I also do not use any form of proxy, VPN or anything remotely similar. It would apper there's a major issue with the wikiservers. Vrenak (talk) 16:13, 30 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Vrenak: Can you provide me the block message, please, so I can look at it? Thanks. very late reply, I know Trijnsteltalk 22:59, 11 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Trijnstel Alas I did not save it, but it very similar to the above mentioned, a simple standard one saying the IP-block is banned and so on, as I said I only have experienced it intermittently, I would wait a few minutes and then there'd be no problems, from this I surmise there has been/is an issue with the server where it mixes up users and their IP's somehow. It has been some time now since the last time it happened. Should the problem arise again I'll of course post it. - Vrenak (talk) 12:43, 12 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
If you could that, that would be fine, because I can't remember other reports similar to yours... Thanks. Trijnsteltalk 19:09, 12 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

nl-wikisource edit

Trijnsteltalk 09:24, 24 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

I don't know the exact reason of the block anymore (three years passed by), but I surely didn't do this lightly. Your information proves that these are shared IP addresses, and so multiple people make use (and abuse) of it. I'd advice you to request a global IP block exemption so you can edit. I'll check whether there are more innocent people caught by the block. very late reply, I know Trijnsteltalk 23:04, 11 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

high-profile public user-rights community legitimate privacy proxy seemingly blocked edit

Dear Trijnstel,

having read your user page and the previous post I'd first like to say that I'm sorry about the tone of the previous post (though I'm completely unconnected with that poster and I'm not trying to comment to their case as such here). I think everything should be going on in a civil manner and thank you very much for the work and effort you're putting into Wikipedia.

That said, I think it may have gone unnoticed that the following block is affecting MetaGer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MetaGer, a German privacy group's proxy protecting innocent internet users from big business data krakening, that recently received massive acclaim including substantial and basically purely user-based sustainability funding from multiple countries (if you can read German please do read this for an impression of the user feedback, including the following (translation mine). This is not a questionable proxy that it seems an easy decision to block, seeing as e.g.:

"I'm a 85-year old internet user and I'm donating [significant amount] towards keeping up your dedicated and meticulous work. Keep going strong to protect people from the krakens"

Keeping up the block, seems to me would be a little like you were blocking the nl:Digitale Burgerbeweging_Nederland, or the EFF (links not working, maybe because this is on meta) Electronic Frontier Foundation or the ACLU, for that matter, or Wikipedia itself.

Defender blocked 2A01:4F8:0:0:0:0:0:0/29 from 20:15, 22 April 2016 to 19:50, 23 September 2016; the reason given was: Per global block

I got this, saying the block is yours, when I was going to make a minor enhancement to one page on de:WP: (emphasis mine)

Der angegebene Grund ist Open proxy: extended as it was abused right after the previous block expired.

I can't speak on the subject of abuse but I wonder if there is a better way to solve this issue than exerting a chilling effect on privacy.

On a side note, I'm a little worried that while you are saying on this talk page of yours that you will reply to messages left here, I can't seem to make out any replies written by you to any messages here, some of which seem to be months old. I sincerely hope you are all alive and well.

Cheers, --217.81.158.88 01:01, 15 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

No renaming between November 20 and November 27 edit

Hi,

You’re getting this because you’re a steward or global renamer. The Community Tech team are working on cross-wiki watchlists. We need to add a couple of fields to the localuser table in centralauth database. In order to be able to do this, we’d need to run a script that will get in the way of renaming users. Our apologies – we realize this is getting in the way of your work.

We ask that you do not rename anyone between 00:00 November 20 (UTC) and 00:00 November 27 (UTC).

(UTC means that if you live in the Americas, it will be on the evening or afternoon of November 19 when the script starts running, and if you live in Oceania or eastern Asia, it can be closer midday on November 27 before we can be sure the script is no longer running.)

Phabricator task.

If there are any problems related to this, or you have any questions, please write me on my talk page. /Johan (WMF) (talk) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 19:39, 17 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Adminship on ltg.wikipedia edit

Hello, I am contacting you because I found a warning written by you on the discussion page of the user Dark_Eagle https://ltg.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dal%C4%ABbnieka_diskusija:Dark_Eagle. Could you advise if he is still working on Latgalian version of Wikipedia (https://ltg.wikipedia.org/wiki)? I have contributed to Latgalian Wikipedia with several hundreds of articles including full texts and self-made pictures, but I have never been an administrator. If there is not enough activity from the side of previous administrators, maybe I can take on these duties? Could you advise what would be the right steps in this situation? Thank you very much. Stiernīts (talk) 11:19, 18 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Stiernīts: Good to see you're (very) active on the Latgalian Wikipedia. Regarding adminship: User:Dark Eagle was a temporary admin on that wiki in 2011 and 2012. I think he has also been the only admin there, since he was one of the few contributors there. Currently there are no admins on ltgwiki. If you're interested in adminship (and I definitely encourage that!), then you could request adminship. Please add an announcement on a central place, such as the local village pump or a forum, and then add your request on m:SRP#Administrator access (follow the instructions there). First you will get the rights for three months and then you need to request it again - up to 6 months, 1 year etc. If the community is large enough, you could get it permanently. Do note, though, that you may always request the help from global sysops or stewards, who have admin rights on all small wikis. If you add {{Delete}} on a page, they may delete it etc. Is this helpful? Otherwise, do ask, please. Trijnsteltalk 16:25, 19 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Warning edit

Hi Trijnstel , I am sorry , I forget about it , could you please restore my permissions . --Mohamed Ouda (talk) 06:50, 23 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Mohamed Ouda: I haven't removed the global rename right from you; it's temporarily removed from all of the global renamers and stewards to ensure no one will perform renames during the maintenance. Please read the related topics on the global renamers mailing list for more information. Trijnsteltalk 18:53, 23 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Antispoof? edit

Hiya. Hope all is well with you. With regard to this title blacklist edit, I am wondering whether <antispoof> would have worked. If it doesn't work and we are forced to use that variety of characters, then maybe we should be adding a phabricator request for additions to mw:Extension:Antispoof.  — billinghurst sDrewth 03:37, 12 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi billinghurst. Afaik <antispoof> only works for the creation of new accounts, while this title blacklist entry is for the creation of pages in the article namespace. However you might find this phabricator ticket interesting; I've given you access. PS. I'm doing fine, you too? It was nice meeting you! :-) Trijnsteltalk 12:11, 13 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
That's not true, AntiSpoof can be used for all types of TitleBlacklist entries. Legoktm (talk) 09:49, 14 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hmh, didn't know that. Then you two should definitely look at that ticket (I'll add you too, Legoktm). Trijnsteltalk 22:21, 14 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Get access to #wikimedia-privacy edit

Hello Trijnstel!
I'm a new Oversighter from ptwikipedia and i come request you the acess to IRC #wikimedia-privacy.
Thanks, !Silent (talk) 12:39, 18 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

@!Silent: Sure I could do that, but please give me first your irc nick and cloak. Especially an irc nick is needed. If you haven't yet registered an irc nick and (optionally) haven't requested a cloak, please follow the instructions here (nick) and here (cloak) and then come back to me.   Thanks. Trijnsteltalk 17:12, 19 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
PS. Please also subscribe to mail:oversight-wp-pt, if you haven't done so already. Trijnsteltalk 17:15, 19 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry, i forgot this! My account on IRC is Silent_ptwiki. !Silent (talk) 23:28, 22 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
@!Silent: No problem. The above mentioned IRC account isn't, however, registered. Please follow the instructions above to get it done. Trijnsteltalk 23:33, 22 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
I think is fine now. I connect to #chat.freenode.net and #wikipedia throught https://webchat.freenode.net/ and works fine to me. !Silent (talk) 23:43, 22 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
@!Silent: You can indeed connect to IRC with this nick ... but since #wikimedia-privacy is a private channel, you need to register your nick (otherwise I simply can't give you access). That's why I ask you to register your nick, it may take only a few minutes. Should you need help with that, do ask please! Apologies for the inconvenience. Trijnsteltalk 23:57, 22 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry for the inconvenience, i never used IRC before.   I registered the nickname and i hope that everything is fine now. !Silent (talk) 00:07, 23 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
It's not completed yet. Please check your email, you should have got an email confirmation. Matiia (talk) 00:26, 23 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
