Stewards/Elections

hello @Martin Urbanec-san is racism counted as a vote? per Universal Code of Conduct i believe we don't tolerate these behavoirs:

We have many stewards from Italy. Baby Pumpkin1987 (talk) 01:01, 9 February 2023

Vote check see (NO) section. 🌸 Sakura emad 💖 (talk) 15:11, 11 February 2023 (UTC)

Sakura emad, for whatever my opinion is worth, I'm not exactly sure if that comment is exactly racist, or better yet, xenophobic, but I'm sure it could have been expressed in a better way.
Striving for a diverse representation it's a nice goal, voting against someone because it's Italian is maybe the most vulgar way to achieve that.
BabyPumpkin1987's and Fossa's comments have been the most surprising and inconsiderate ones in these elections so far. — Klein Muçi (talk) 15:33, 11 February 2023 (UTC)
@Klein Muçi: just as you said i was surprised by Fossa's comments as well, it's kinda funny, fossa voted no to all other candidates as well. but unfortunately BabyPumpkin1987's comment is different, i cannot vote no to someone based on race, gender, color, etc: it's like saying we have too many white-black/ Muslim/Christiaan people as a steward and voting no based on this, and i believe it's a racism. 🌸 Sakura emad 💖 (talk) 15:42, 11 February 2023 (UTC)

Talk:Stewards/Confirm/2023#Tks4Fish

The summary of the remove votes is not representative of the issues raised. Neither me nor Anthere mentioned how Tks4Fish had made too many global blocks, it was a complete lack of communication that was the issue. This is shown by me saying If he is going to make so many global blocks but then barely respond to messages and Anthere saying this steward gave me far too much work during the last year, to try to address the complains of all the editors blocked (bolding added by me in this message). --Ferien (talk) 21:29, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Ferien,
Thanks for your message. First of all, I believe “how Tks4Fish had made too many global blocks” was indeed mentioned in your comment, albeit in a different part of the sentence than you highlighted: “If he is going to make so many global blocks but […]” (bolding mine). Poor communication (as a different but related issue mentioned in the confirmation) is included on the very next line in the summary, as “poor responses to meta talk page posts”.
I believe it makes little sense to include the same argument multiple times in the same confirmation summary, especially considering confirmations are a discussion (rather than a voting). As such, the presence of arguments matter more than which template the comment was marked with (or if it was marked with any template at all).
Because both arguments raised in Tks4Fish’s confirmation are included in the summary, I believe it is well-enough representative. If you insist, I can consider copying exactly what I listed under   Neutral to the   Remove line as well; however, I am not convinced that would make the summary more informative than it already is.
Sincerely,
Martin Urbanec (talk) 23:24, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for your explanation. For what it's worth, I supported Tks4Fish's confirmation in 2022 because of the proxy blocks – for me, communication is the main issue. That being said, I do understand not wanting to write the same argument twice and so am fine with how it is currently now. Thanks, --Ferien (talk) 15:53, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

What if we delete the usergroup

Hello. We, ruwiki users, want to remove one of ours usergroups for non-experienced users and join its userrights to another usergroup. We have a question: is it necessary to exclude this group from all users having it before that, which will litter the action logs, or at the moment of deleting the group it will simply disappear from all its users without visible actions in the wiki logs? MBH (talk) 14:08, 4 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi @MBH, thanks for the question! When an user group is deleted from the configuration, sysadmins generally do empty it out. This is not automatic, but there is a script (emptyUserGroup.php) to facilitate this. Generally, you don't need to worry about it -- just fill a Phabricator task to get the group removed (and its permissions reassigned), and sysadmins will do the needful. Hope it makes sense! Best, Martin Urbanec (talk) 20:11, 4 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, but I'll try to make my question clearer. One ruwiki user opposed the proposal to delete the group because before deleting it 1500 users would have to be excluded from it and this would clutter up the logs. Is this true, or will deleting the group not create 1500 new entries in the rights log? MBH (talk) 14:16, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
Hi @MBH:, thanks for the clarification. If a system administrator empties the group via the script, it is emptied silently, without any logs added. If an on-wiki administrator empties the group for you, it will be logged of course. Hope this helps. Best, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 13:52, 16 June 2023 (UTC)

Need your input on a policy impacting gadgets and UserJS

Dear interface administrator,

This is Samuel from the Security team and I hope my message finds you well.

There is an ongoing discussion on a proposed policy governing the use of external resources in gadgets and UserJS. The proposed Third-party resources policy aims at making the UserJS and Gadgets landscape a bit safer by encouraging best practices around external resources. After an initial non-public conversation with a small number of interface admins and staff, we've launched a much larger, public consultation to get a wider pool of feedback for improving the policy proposal. Based on the ideas received so far, the proposed policy now includes some of the risks related to user scripts and gadgets loading third-party resources, best practices for gadgets and UserJS developers, and exemptions requirements such as code transparency and inspectability.

As an interface administrator, your feedback and suggestions are warmly welcome until July 17, 2023 on the policy talk page.

Have a great day!

Samuel (WMF), on behalf of the Foundation's Security team 23:02, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

phab:T330811

Hi Martin,

I'm writing behalf of Turkish Wikipedia community. We had a discussion months ago, the community consensus was lower the edit rate limit of IP's & newbie's to 2 per minute. You can check the phab task at phab:T330811.

You made a comment there, and after that we explained the situation in more detail, but then we were unable to make any progress. I suspect that one of the reasons the task remains open is because you are expected to respond. The consensus of our community is still the same and we're struggling with vandals. Is it possible to have a look at it when it's convenient for you? anerka (talk) 14:07, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

Approving Event organizers

Hey Martin, sorry to bother you. Is there a periodicity in which you approve Event organizers? @Paula (WDU) applied today but I see you have some backlog, so just wanted to make sure how much time it might take her to get approved (we're organizing a contest). Thanks in advance! Scann (WDU) (talk) 22:56, 26 July 2023 (UTC)

Request to global unlock account

I am decided that I wrote to User:Cullen328 in English Wikipedia requested for standard offer having to reinstate my ApprenticeFan account to unlock globally after six months of block, when it was locked by Martin Urbanec in January shortly after the indefinite ban in en-Wiki. The discussion is at WP:AN for a review and comments.

I am willing to continue working with other Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons and Wiktionary, as the block in en-wiki will remain in place as it might get requested for an unblock. Promise that I will be a good Wikipedian and a good contributor to be the right editor with civility, assume good faith, and five pillars. 2001:FD8:17C7:85B6:1956:DDB0:FABE:1FF6 23:54, 24 August 2023 (UTC)

Experiencing slow loading on all Wikimedia projects – seeking assistance

Hey, Martin!
I've been experiencing very slow loading on all Wikimedia projects since yesterday, and no, it's not due to my internet connection (it's fast; other websites load in 1 to 3 seconds).
I've tried to reload the pages – same issue persists. I've attempted to restart my browser – same result. I've also restarted my mobile phone – but the problem remains. Furthermore, I've tried clearing the cache of the articles on hrwiki that I suspected might be causing the issue – yet, the problem persists.
I hope you can provide me with some advice and assistance.
All best, Croatia 925 (talk) 09:17, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

No worries, it's all good now. I've resolved the issue. Croatia 925 (talk) 09:29, 13 September 2023 (UTC)

Special:AbuseFilter/132

Hello Martin,

On fr-wp, we had a false positive because of global filter 132, line 23 (Centralesupélec). I see that you are the author of this line, but I don't understand why it has been added (spam?). Is this line of the filter still relevant? Imho, non-autoconfirmed users should be able to add this string to articles. Link to the false positive report on fr-wp: fr:Wikipédia:AbuseFilter/Faux positifs#Spécial:AbuseFilter/ 2023-09-18 15:45.

Kind regards, — Jules* talk 13:44, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Vituzzu and 1234qwer1234qwer4:, could you take a look please? Best, — Jules* talk 20:58, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
I've moved it to filter #46 let's see what happens now. Vituzzu (talk) 21:30, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
Hello, so sorry for keeping this without a message -- I just saw a new message notification now. Indeed it was added because of spam, see history on Wikidata (lines around deleting that company's page from a lot of wikis). Thanks @Vituzzu for moving it to a different, less restrictive, filter and thanks @Jules* for reporting! Sincerely, Martin Urbanec (talk) 22:36, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
Thanks to both of you! — Jules* talk 22:45, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

I want to be unblock on the English Wikipedia.

Can you please unblock me on the English Wikipedia? The admins blamed it all on me and it was actually Carlstak who called me a MrBeast Butterburger! 2601:204:E684:24E0:2874:877:234A:4EF3 19:36, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

User:Lackope

Hi Martin, can you unlock my account because possibility of compromising them is past, my e-mail is not changed, and I can normally use my account. Thanks in advance. Lackope 77.243.23.187 16:24, 18 December 2023 (UTC)

Martin, I expect yout answer, because you locked my account. Lackope 77.243.27.220 09:26, 19 December 2023 (UTC)
Hello Lackope, apologies for the delay in the response. Usually, accounts locked for a possible compromise are not unlocked directly by the stewards, but by the Wikimedia Foundation's Trust and Safety team. This is because they have access to more information than stewards, that allows them to make better judgements on possible account compromises. Would you mind contacting the Trust and safety team instead to regain access to your account? Their contact e-mail address is ca@wikimedia.org. Thank you in advance and happy new year, Martin Urbanec (talk) 02:44, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

Wiki Science Competition

Hi, Martin! Might you be able to help with this. For countries like the USA or Ireland that is a total disaster if there is no banner in place. And for the competition (that itself dates back to 2011) is pretty important to be visible in as many countries as possible for it to work well. Kruusamägi (talk) 21:57, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Any thoughts on this? Kruusamägi (talk) 21:52, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
Hello @Kruusamägi, apologies for not being able to help out with this earlier. I see that DerHexer has handled the campaign (thanks!). Is there anything else I can do at this point here? Best, Martin Urbanec (talk) 02:48, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
By now the image collection is over (on all but in one country). The problem was the lack of willingness to set up the campaign so that the link in every affected country would lead to the local landing page instead of the international English language page.
