What is the purpose of the campaign? How will you measure the success of the campaign? edit

Description -

Metrics - WSC takes place once every two years since 2015 and within the same timeframe. The main target group is people studying and/or working in higher education institutions. We are especially interested in people who have never uploaded files, but could add quality content. The banner is intended to be minimalist and the main metric is the number of files uploaded per country.

What banner(s) will you use? What will be your landing page? edit

Banners - commons:Commons:Wiki Science Competition 2023/CentralNotice

There are two sets of countries. Actively participating countries, that request for a more intense campaign, and the rest of the world category. Almost all countries run the competition from November 1st to December 15th and would need banner impressions especially in the start and end sections of the competition. The international upload form will function until the end of the year. It is not a problem if there are some other banners as two months should be a sufficient time period for the rest of the countries for at least some banner impressions during this time.

Countries that need special attention are France, Ireland, New Zealand, Spain, South Africa, Switzerland, and the USA, as they have more limited possibilities of using other banners. Russia and Belarus can be skipped with the international campaign (Russia already collected images). With Estonia and Finland, no banners are needed in their home wikis.

Discussion edit

Hi Kruusamägi,

A quick note from me. First, I am Julia and I work for the WMF Advancement team. Thanks for listing this banner. I see that several of the countries you are aiming to run the banner in will have the English fundraising banners up from the 28th of November to the 31st of December. These are: Ireland, New Zealand, and the USA (we also run in Canada, the Uk, and Australia but I do not see them listed). Additionally Switzerland will also run a fundraising campaign on their sites in December. In your banner settings, you state that the banners will be displayed to all users. The fundraising banners will be displayed to non-logged in users which means that in the countries I listed above, non-logged in users will see 10 impression of the fundraising banner first, before they will see your banner. As your campaign already starts in early November, hopefully the overlap with fundraising banners will not cause too much problems with your campaign. Please let me know if you have any questions. Best, Julia

That is perfectly fine. We have had this overlap every time this competition has been held (2015, 2017, 2019, 2021). The longer upload period in the international upload form should also help to mitigate this issue.
For the actively participating countries, it would be good to have "one campaign" at the start and then the other at the end part of the competition. For the rest of the world, the number of impressions is less important. Countries with local language versions will sometimes also use sitenotice banners in their language versions and might only want to target people looking at other language versions from their respective countries.
BTW. Wikimedia UK is interested in promoting the international upload form, but they would not organize their own local competition.
We are still finalizing the exact list of participating countries and fine-tuning the start and end dates of upload campaigns. Kruusamägi (talk) 12:25, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good! Thank you. JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 06:41, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • @DerHexer: I've added a banner version for Ukraine with our landing page. Could you replace the international version with the Ukrainian one for Ukraine when you have a chance? Thanks a lot! --AntonProtsiuk (WMUA) (talk) 13:32, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@AntonProtsiuk (WMUA): Your landing page is linked on the participation page which is linked in the banner of the global campaign (that is also enabled for Ukraine). For reasons stated below, we cannot create individual campaigns this time. Sorry about that, —DerHexer (Talk) 20:40, 21 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
DerHexer, thank you for your response. I understand that CN admin resources are quite limited, and I don't want to overburden you personally with additional work you don't have the time for, especially after you've carved out time for this during your vacation. As a general approach, though, it's unfortunate that a more relevant banner cannot be switched on. The international website is of very limited utility to actually get people to check out the Ukrainian landing page (they need to read a lot of English-language text to get to it, which is a tall order). Do you think it might make sense for us at least to submit a separate banner request for part of the contest time (e.g. from December 1 or December 5) that would simultaneously switch off the international one for Ukraine / Ukrainian-language wiki projects? AntonProtsiuk (WMUA) (talk) 13:25, 22 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've split UA into a separate banner and campaign. I am not sure what the problem was exactly. --Base (talk) 19:51, 3 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Central Notice admin comments edit

@Kruusamägi: The linked banner page is not fully helpful for us to create the campaign. On the one hand, we cannot use wiki markup but only HMTL, CSS and JavaScript. On the other hand, there should only be one banner with translations enabled. Can't we reuse the 2021 campaign and its banner? Certainly, the year would need to be changed, but it would make things much easier. Additionally, I'm pretty busy these days (vacations and sports event for Commons), the campaign comes a little bit late so that another CN administrator might take this one. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 22:20, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer: Feel free to reuse the 2021 campaign if that is easier. What should be looked at more closely are the links (where are people directed), what countries are involved and what are the start and end dates at specific countries. For the not actively participating countries it is more relaxed. Kruusamägi (talk) 06:39, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Competition is starting in the first set of countries (Estonia, Finland, France, Indonesia, Ireland, Malaysia, North Macedonia, Spain and the USA). Poland would follow at November 6th and many more countries at November 15th. Kruusamägi (talk) 23:30, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If it helps, the banner config in 2021 is here https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:CentralNotice&subaction=noticeDetail&notice=Wiki_Science_2021 Pyb en résidence (talk) 13:51, 1 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Vermont and Martin Urbanec: I will really have 0 time to work on that until next Monday at the earliest. Can you help out? Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 20:58, 1 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Everything works? A new set of countries will start in a week. Kruusamägi (talk) 10:31, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Kruusamägi: Obviously not, no campaign has been created until now. And I'm not surprised by that: It cannot work like that that you throw some pages at us and hope that we make some sense out of it. First of all, CN campaigns cannot alternate per country, only per language. Therefore, there must be two separate campaigns (requested) for Spain and Argentina, for example. We could alternate the landing page link per target language but that won't work for Spanish, obviously. The same with countries like Switzerland where more than one language is spoken. Secondly, campaigns should run at the very same time. Every change in start or end date requires a separate campaign. It would have made sense that for each language/country a separate campaign would have been requested and/or created. It's a hell lot of work for Wiki Loves Monuments and handled by a separate CN admin who works on that for multiple days. The same would be needed for such a global complex campaign. This cannot be requested only shortly beforehand, especially with the very small number of (active) CN admins.
What I can offer is a global campaign for all the given countries that I've identified (please check!) from 15 November to 15 December (that's where most of the countries have their competition running). For that purpose, I've cloned the 2021 banner which you can find here. I've copied the proposed translations and marked them as published, but you will never know (the TranslateExtension is a nightmare!). For that reason, I've added a [ Help with translations! ] button so that people can fix all the mistakes that might have come up with the cloning (that's a nightmare, too) and copying of the texts. The banner contains a general link to the global landingpage. That's not optimal at all because that page is English only right now. But, as said, an alternating link would only be possible for a handful of proposed languages/countries. So this is supposed to be the hot fix for your request in this context.
Please check the changes and the preview, ping me with feedback or approval so that I can enable that campaign. As said, I'm currently on vacations and cannot provide anything else than what I've said above. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 00:05, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer: I can create a separate request for every country + the rest of the world, but I seriously doubt, that this makes less work for CN admins. And as you likely know from WLM, countries often wait until the last minute to decide if they participate or not. But I guess the small number of active CN admins is my fault ;)
Better global landing page link would be: https://www.wikisciencecompetition.org/contest/ Else is fine.
As it would be shown only a few times, then banner translations are less relevant anyway and that banner could be used in substantially more countries or at least ones where there are plenty of English speakers (like Canada, Australia, India, the UK, and why not all the EU). This is still an image competition and it even requires participants to add English descriptions. So if that is a hot fix to have at least some banner, then it should be as wide as possible. This competition is not limited to countries, that have local competitions (like WLM is). Everybody could participate.
So you want separate requests for Argentina, Spain, the USA, France, Switzerland, Italy, Ireland, Poland, Ukraine, Indonesia, Malaysia, and South Africa? (others could likely manage with the generic banner)
Kruusamägi (talk) 01:13, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Kruusamägi: We don't do global campaigns in countries/languages that do not participate or have a local ambassador. I've enabled the global campaign with the corrected link. I think that separate campaigns don't make much sense now. Please check how the campaign goes and if we need to make some adjustments for a better distribution. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 20:56, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer Thx ! I think that the banner is not enabled, maybe the parameter "enabled". Pyb en résidence (talk) 12:25, 15 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Done. —DerHexer (Talk) 12:29, 15 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer@Kruusamägi Could the campaign have a normal priority? right now the banner is hidden in France, because She said and Wikipedia Asian Month campaigns have a higher priority. Pyb en résidence (talk) 19:57, 21 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
After the maximum impressions for these campaigns are shown, the lower prioritized campaign should be displayed. Anyway, I've changed back to normal priority for this campaign. —DerHexer (Talk) 20:21, 21 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@DerHexer The Italian contest is running from 1st to 31st December. Would it be possible to have a banner for Italian running until the end of the contest with a medium-high priority? There wasn't any edition in 2021 so it would be really useful to make the contest reboot properly. Do I need to do anything else? I've also slightly modified the text for the banner. Thank you.--Ferdi2005(talk) 16:37, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If the settings are touched, based on current submissions here we also need it for Nigeria, another country active in December. Also, even if the deadline is close (but they should postpone it), I feel quite strange about Thailand. Did the sitenotice even run there? It would be nice to push it a little bit more.
In general, it's my feeling over the years that a whole week does not make a stronger difference than a couple of days i my experience, any users log in regularly. So if we could ge a couple of days more "globally" before the December, 15th deadine, that would also help and not be not invasive.--Alexmar983 (talk) 16:44, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ferdi2005: The linked pages are not very readible with these many countries, texts, dates, etc. Therefore, could you please submit an individual request for your campaign? I will be on the road this weekend to take photos for Commons so that I might not have the time, but the easier the request, the more likely that it will be handled. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 21:02, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok @DerHexer, I've created a specific request: CentralNotice/Request/Wiki Science Competition Italy 2023. Thank you. Ferdi2005(talk) 15:04, 7 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Should the organizers in Nigeria or South Africa create a separate request now as well?--Alexmar983 (talk) 19:51, 7 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer, competition has now ended in many countries. It continues in Argentina, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Nigeria, South Africa, Thailand, and Ukraine. Out of them, Italy has a separate banner request, and in Ukraine, it ends today evening. Kruusamägi (talk) 10:52, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've unchecked the countries that ended. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 15:40, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer now all countries exept South Africa have ended image collection. Kruusamägi (talk) 11:13, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Changed accordingly. —DerHexer (Talk) 17:40, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
