Wikipedia's localized names
editIt seems that you are interested in this matter, having asked about it at miwiki and viwiki, two wikis written in languages you don't speak yourself (according to your Babel box), as well as hakwiki. May I ask why is that? You don't have to answer if you feel this question is too personal. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 15:55, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for assuming good faith. In Māori Wikipedia, the name-changing has been seriously discussed (the consensus of name-changing has been reached, but that of the exact spelling of its new name has not) since Hawaiian Wikipedia, etc, use localized spelling and Māori Wikipedia somehow prefer to use localized spelling (especially in name of countries) and I happened to find it out. Hakka is a dialect of Chinese and the spelling 'Wikipedia' cannot be converted into Chinese characters (In Standard Chinese Wikipedia and other Wikipedias in Chinese dialects, '維基百科'(hant)/'维基百科'(hans) is used as the spelling in Hanzi, but its pronunciation is not corresponding to 'Wikipedia'). I mistakenly expected that Vietnamese speakers would prefer to use a localized spelling. By the way, it is not too hard for Standard Chinese speakers to learn to read passages in Chinese dialects if the passages are written in Hanzi instead of Latin (or rarely, Cyrillic, etc.) letters - as far as I know, difference between Modern Standard Chinese and Chinese dialects is not much larger (if not smaller) than that between Modern Standard Chinese and Classical Chinese, if Hanzi is used. Hence, it is possible for me to find obvious problems in Wikipedias in other Chinese dialects so that I occasionally appeared in Wikipedias in Chinese dialects. I apologize for my disturbance to Vietnamese Wikipedia. By the way, would you like to tell me the exact Vietnamese spelling of NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh? (Similarly, you don't have to answer if you feel this question is too personal.) John Smith Ri (talk) 03:59, 1 July 2023 (UTC)
- And what is your opinion on localizing spellings (to fit the native orthography) for languages in Latin letters? (For other languages, localizing spellings is almost inevitable.) John Smith Ri (talk) 04:09, 1 July 2023 (UTC)
