Completing Wikidata info for Wikimedians in Residence

Timeline of Wikipedians in Residence up to 2012 (incomplete).

Interactive timeline of all Wikimediains in residence listed in wikidata, sorted by length. (timeline tool)

Hello WiRs, I'm building w:template:WiR_table_row to help automate the Wikipedians_in_Residence table. Could I therefore ask people to ensure their WiR status is up to date in Wikidata (especially P108, P2699, P937, P580, P582)? See wikidata:Q25212744#P106 as an example. It'll also allow for some nice visualisation of organisations locations, and an updated version of this rather out-of-date diagram. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 04:30, 24 September 2019 (UTC)

@Evolution and evolvability: Thanks for this. I put this on the agenda for the October meeting. Blue Rasberry (talk) 10:22, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
Half way done. Is outreachwiki the best place to keep the outreach:Wikipedian_in_Residence page, or is it better moved to meta? What's best for find-ability? T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 23:23, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
@Evolution and evolvability: Moving to meta and closing out the outreach page is best. I am interested in joining the effort to move it to Wikimedian in residence. Automatic maintenance with Wikidata like you are doing is the way to go. Blue Rasberry (talk) 01:06, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
We may have a slight problem in that not all WiR are actually titled "Wikimedian in Residence." Do you have any suggestions as to how we should handle this? Some might be "Wikipedian in Residence" or some might be a higher level title like "Open access coordinator" or in my case, "Wikimedia strategist." -- Fuzheado (talk) 14:58, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
The official title is not a problem as long as they're self-reporting their job in the list. It's only a problem if we slap a label on people who don't want it. I don't see any particular benefit in moving the page out of outreachwiki. Nemo 17:50, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
Very nearly ready! I think I've just finished all of the wikidata items (table). Should soon be fully implementable over at Wikimedian_in_residence. In the meantime, see the map! T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 08:28, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
I have mixed feelings about where the table should live. Philosophically I think outreach is the better fit. It might get more attention on meta but we could always soft redirect. I don't have a strong preference for one or the other, though. Some of these residences are GLAM related which leans towards keeping everything together on outreach. --mikeu talk 15:41, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
Courtesy of the amazing User:Hardwigg, there is now an up to date and interactive version of that old 2012 timeline using the wikidata-timeline tool! Now added to the Wikimedian_in_residence page. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk
The timeline is cool. It is missing for example Hilary Thorsen (Q59753374) / Stanford University and my own School of Data Science (Q68489500). I think this is because of "no end date" but have not looked at the query so much. Blue Rasberry (talk) 14:41, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
I've not yet worked out how to get no-end-date items working on the timeline (but seems like it should be possible). Definitely important to try to include. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 11:16, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
@Evolution and evolvabilit: I just entered mine, but fail to see it rendered, as well as others in 2020? No real-time update? Q96267613 --Zblace (talk) 06:55, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
@Zblace: sadly the table doesn't yet auto-update (eventually might via user:listeriabot). for now each QID has to be added to the bottom of the list - I've just done it for Q96267613, so should appear there now! If there are arother that you notice are missing, please feel free to add yourself of let me know! T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 12:45, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
@Evolution and evolvabilit: sorry that was mine ID - this is from the host Q17453697. I have no idea what is the property to add to them (did not found WIR host or anything similar)Zblace (talk) 14:30, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
@Zblace: Currently, all Wikimedia in residence info is included on the person's wikidata item, for example you can see the "{{WiR table_row|Q96267613}}" template used below`. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 07:02, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
All good. I just did not scroll all the way and both right and down on small resolution. Zblace (talk) 19:01, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

Rewrite of meta page

Thanks Evolution and evolvability for your recent development of the Wikidata presentations of Wikimedians in Residence.

I rewrote the meta page Wikimedian in Residence. Everyone should check it out. I am keen on getting a history and documentation in order for 2021, the 20-year anniversary of Wikipedia's founding and a likely surge of media attention and hiring appointments for Wikimedians in Residence.

Thomas, do you have ideas for presenting a table or some visualization on that page? I would like to make that meta page the center of general attention for documentation on the concept and being a hub to other resources. Thanks. Blue Rasberry (talk) 14:10, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

I'd be keen to get the map and maybe a timeline in this style. Does anyone know if it's possible to embed them rather than just use screenshots (also asked over at wikidata)? The full table itself should probably be clipped inside a div, e.g.: <div style="height: 300px; overflow: auto">...</div>. Eventually I'd love a bot that could add new QIDs to the list so that all users need to do is update their wikidata item and the bot would find it from running this daily query. I'm also awaiting the final import of Module:WikidataIB for the templates to work, then it should be good to go! T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 01:40, 28 October 2019 (UTC)
Given the great work by Bluerasberry done re-writing Wikimedian in residence, I think that we should redirect the outreach:Wikimedian in residenceWikimedian in residence. Is there any material in the outreach page that is worth merging across? Also relevant is the /Creating a Wikimedian in Residence position subpage. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 11:17, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
The rewrite looks fantastic! I would like to see more discussion about where these pages should reside. It is terribly confusing to have pages about WIR, GLAM, etc. on multiple wikis. Having given this some thought, I'm now leaning towards consolidation on outreach rather than here. --mikeu talk 15:34, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
@Mu301: I want content here on meta. Either I am indifferent about outreach wiki, or I support a merge of content from there to here.
Meta has on the order of 1000s regular contributors; outreach wiki has on the order of 10s. Meta is community based, and outreach wiki has gotten most of its content either from paid editors at the Wikimedia Foundation or at the direction and funding of the WMF. I like the editorial freedom here at meta because we only need typical community review to build things out here, and will not conflict with paid staff wiki documentation. I can do more documentation here but I wanted to go stepwise to get feedback. If I pull in more content then no one has to delete other perspectives in other places, but my preference and eventual aim is probable to direct attention here. I support you or anyone else simultaneously building out on outreach but I see greater value in meta at this time, and until someone makes a case otherwise. Introducing Wikimedia Diary: A memory book (notebook) for all

  Wikimedia Diary
Hello Wikimedians in Residence Exchange Network/Archive 2, I wanna share you about Wikimedia Diary, a public memory book (notebook) in which Wikimedians from all over the world are free to write any worth noting event/activities/experiences by them or community in this Wiki world. It is a more casual place to write about what one is up to.

As we all know, a diary is a book in which diarist keeps a daily record of events and experiences. Likewise, the basic idea of Wikimedia Diary is that we do many activities here in wiki world which we are proud of, but unfortunately it became only the history anytime. So, It is meant to record those activities on the happened date with a signature (~~~~) which is worth noting, and letting fellow Wikimedians know about what inspirational you've did. It would motivate users from all around the world to keep on cool activities and publish a note. I hope you share your activities with all of us on the page, and please let your friends know about Wikimedia Diary. Also, your feedback is welcome on the discussion page. Thank you!
Kind regards,
Tulsi Bhagat, Initiator of Wikimedia Diary, Wikimedia movement communications group.

@Bluerasberry: I am guessing this did not really picked up among WiR folks (moderating the visual effect), but is there anything useful to take from this effort? I do not like the location and branding, but I do not mind the method being used.--Zblace (talk) 07:28, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

Videographer to help shape content for real estate company pages

@Carl Fredrik (WIR): Hi Carl, EllenCT recommended I get in touch. I am a paid, declared editor working with Ellen to improve the completeness of several real estate company pages. To improve the quality of the page, Ellen has suggested getting in touch with a videographer. Would you be interested in hearing more about the project? --KatherineBusby2019 (talk) 08:42, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

@Carl Fredrik (WIR): I don't know whether you have ever done or are interested in doing videography, but I hope if you personally aren't interested in the task that you or a reader here can recommend a GLAM type with video experience documenting architecture for a short-term corporate gig. EllenCT (talk) 11:41, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

@KatherineBusby2019 and EllenCT: Thanks for writing. The project you describe is totally out of scope of what this organization does and we have no advice. The best referral this community can make is for you to seek consulting from any local general media or communications agency. Blue Rasberry (talk) 21:56, 14 January 2020 (UTC)
@Bluerasberry: for which organization are you speaking? Is there some rule against it. There are already a few volunteers. Is there something I should tell them? EllenCT (talk) 15:03, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
You are posting on the talk page of an organization called "Wikimedians in Residence Exchange Network". I am speaking for this organization, which has no affiliation to any such project as you describe. If anyone in a project needs advice on rules then please contact the editors of the relevant Wikimedia project through the usual channels. This is a peer to peer organization which mostly supports already trained and established Wikimedians in Residence in talking with their peers. There is almost no support here to train anyone who is not already experienced with the rules and community norms. Best wishes for your project. Blue Rasberry (talk) 15:13, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
@Bluerasberry: my understanding is that IWG has an WiR application pending. EllenCT (talk) 17:19, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
Marking this visually as OFF-TOPIC or SPAM and I think same and similar should be marked also--Zblace (talk) 07:24, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

Notification of User Group Expiration - Renewal pending submission of reporting

Greetings @Sannita: & @Pharos:,

This is a notification to bring to your attention that your organization is currently past due on its required annual reporting. Wikimedia User Groups are required to submit an annual activity report covering the entirety of the 12-month agreement period in order to prompt review for a renewal. Reports must be written in English, posted to meta, and linked on the meta Reports page.

This page is used to track how organizations and groups are meeting reporting requirements described in their agreements with the Wikimedia Foundation (e.g. chapter agreements, thematic organization agreements, user group agreements). It is the central place where affiliates can add reports about their activities, share their plans, and even news or social media channels with the wider movement. When new reports are available, organizations and groups should add them to this page to keep their columns up to date.

As noted on the meta Reports page, your organization’s 2018-2019 annual reporting became past due in November. Please be sure to

  1. Post your 2018-2019 annual reporting to the meta Reports page as soon as possible to return to compliance with your user group agreement.
  2. Check that your group’s page is also up to date with past report links for historical record-keeping, and
  3. Please send an email to Wikimedia-l in order to share with a movement-wide audience.

If you have any questions or need any further guidance, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Best regards,
DNdubane (WMF) (talk) 05:50, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Is there an update on who is working us to get back into compliance? I am a bit unclear if this is being done or if this is something we should have clarified to ensure somebody is doing it and we are not just assuming somebody is. I have done this in one of the other Affiliates, and realize how valuable and appreciated an effort it is. --- FULBERT (talk) 21:58, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
We are overdue. @FULBERT: We have a report draft at Wikimedians in Residence Exchange Network/2019. The advice is that members of this group should document their own projects in their own way, then link to their documentation from this annual report page. In this way, individual people produce the documentation they need for themselves and their organizations, and also we profile the accomplishments of members in this organization. For many people, the meetings of this organization often are to share what people are doing in their organizations and arrange for peer to peer support, so having people talk about themselves seems like a fit for annual reporting. Blue Rasberry (talk) 20:38, 8 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks Blue Rasberry (talk). Will add something there to help in this effort. --- FULBERT (talk) 18:36, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

2019 report

Hey, if anyone has anything to share, add it to the 2019 annual report. By doing so you your organization demonstrates its participation in the Wikimedia peer review process for your projects.

We need to send this off probably by next Wednesday 15 April 2020 after the meeting on that day. Blue Rasberry (talk) 18:28, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

I revised this page with tweaks and clarifications throughout, along with the same on the Wikimedian in Residence page itself on Meta Blue Rasberry (talk). What else do you think may be needed, and who will be submitting / linking this? I also believe we should list the AffCom representatives on our WREN page homepage, and would but honestly do not know who they are. Happy to submit this to AffCom once we are current, and also to add them to the homepage, which I believe is a requirement (which we can then also add on our usergroup update page as well). --- FULBERT (talk) 19:55, 12 April 2020 (UTC)
Sure; add away and happy to submit this week Blue Rasberry (talk). --- FULBERT (talk) 20:37, 12 April 2020 (UTC)
There have been some updates, and I will submit this report today. It can always be updated but at least this way it will be current. I want to know who are the AffCom representatives for this, in part because they need to know this is happening and they will receive the communications about anything else that is needed for this report. Neither of the current reporting contacts replied about this process, so will seek them out another way and ensure they get listed someplace within our group. --- FULBERT (talk) 17:58, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
I submitted our 2019 report to the new Affiliates reporting area and emailed User:DNdubane_(WMF) about this in case of any questions. If anybody wishes to add more to our report, please continue to do so as the link on our page to it remains live. --- FULBERT (talk) 22:06, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
Hi @FULBERT: , thank you for the submission. I have update your group's compliance status. --DNdubane (WMF) (talk) 14:38, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for letting us know, DNdubane (WMF). Glad we are now current! --- FULBERT (talk) 14:26, 16 April 2020 (UTC)
It would be good to approach this maybe in sustainable way and with plan for 2020. If anyone is interested in researching, reflecting on and then publishing something on WiR it would be nice to brainstorm it in next meeting maybe? --Zblace (talk) 13:59, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

Hey @Bluerasberry: The job is filled! We found an amazing collaborator in Elysia. You may know her from her love of bats, her many GA's, or her work at WikiEd. Super excited! Ocaasi (talk) 17:04, 5 June 2020 (UTC)

Should WREN sign the community open letter on renaming?

See: Community open letter on renaming.

Context: The letter is focused primarily on the lack of community process, rather than the name itself. It was drafted by a group that included several WREN members. Note that the signing of this letter is orthogonal to Wikimedians in Residence Exchange Network/Branding feedback.

Optical Society event - request for support

Is anyone free 2am - 4am UTC this Friday to offer training or support for an editathon run by the Optical Society for their Student Leadership Conference?

450 Bachelors to PhD students from around the world are slated to attend the conference as a whole and the OSA are ensuring that the programme covers lots of different time zones to enable as many people as possible to participate at a time that works for them. There will be two wiki-sessions during the conference training the students to share their knowledge of optical science on Wikipedia. We have some experienced wiki volunteers to help with an earlier session but still need help for this one. You can either lead training or offer support by answering questions about editing.

The OSA are increasingly interested in Wikimedia and especially what can be done in different languages to improve access to scientific knowledge. This could be a great opportunity to develop a connection with scientists near you who are interested in editing.

If you can help, please reply here or email me: a.white@wellcome.ac.uk Zeromonk (talk) 14:25, 8 September 2020 (UTC)

Sunday September 20 Strategic Wikimedia Affiliates Network meeting

Birds of a feather flock together.

The Strategic Wikimedia Affiliates Network (SWAN) is a developing forum for all Wikimedia movement affiliates to share ideas on the Wikimedia 2030 strategy process. It expands on the model of the All-Affiliates Brand Meeting to help lay some of the groundwork for a future Global Council.

Following up on the August SWAN meeting and June's All-Affiliates Brand Meeting, as well as strategic and outreach topics of mutual concern to all affiliates, this month we are meeting on Sunday September 20, and you are all invited to RSVP here.--Pharos (talk) 02:03, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

Movement Strategy - What Are Your Choices For Implementation

Hello Wikimedians in Residence Exchange Network/Archive 2,

The time has come to put Strategy into work and everyone's invited to participate.

The Movement Strategy Design Group and Support Team are inviting you to organize virtual meetings with your community and colleagues before the end of October. The aim is for you to decide what ideas from the Movement Strategy recommendations respond to your needs and will have an impact in the movement. The recommendations are available in different formats and in many languages. There are 10 awesome recommendations and close to 50 recommended changes and actions or initiatives. Not everything will be implemented. The aim of prioritization is to create an 18-month implementation plan to take some of the initiatives forward starting in 2021.

Prioritization is at the level of your group, affiliate, and community. Think local and relevant! Regional and thematic platforms are great ways to prepare and share ideas. Afterwards, we will come together in November to co-create the implementation plan. More information about November’s global events will be shared soon. For now and until the end of October, organize locally and share your priorities with us.

You can find guidance for the events, the simple reporting template, and other supporting materials here on Meta. You can share your results directly on Meta, by email, or by filling out this survey. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any questions or comments, strategy2030 wikimedia.org

We will be hosting office hours to answer any questions you might have, Thursday October 1 at 14.00 UTC (Google Meet).

Movement Strategy Priorities for Wikimedians in Residence Exchange Network UG - IMPENDING DEADLINE

I have not seen any direct discussion of our User Group Priorities as related to the Movement Strategy, and the date for our UG to submit something is within only a couple days. As this is an opportunity of value that may help us develop internal capacity, I do not think we should miss this. Here is the [of Initiatives] we need to align with for this to be considered.

I propose we prioritize these two initiative for our User Group, with the aim of increasing awareness and impact of the opportunities Wikimedians in Residence across the world provide to our communities. It will be intended to fund this work as a fundamental need and strategy, including increasing support to various new users.

  • 1. Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement (Why do we need this? Wikimedians in Residence bring people together to help others learn how to edit across Wikimedia Projects, and as a result always want to include others in editing for impact, something that is especially needed with underrepresented communities and the ideas, histories, and cultures by those who are otherwise not well-represented across Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects).
  • 2 Funding for underrepresented communities (WiR bring so much value to organizations, often without WMF knowledge or formal support, that the WMF should begin to fund some WiR positions for global Movement impact)
  • 7. Manage Internal Knowledge (Why do we need this? Wikimedians in Residence seek to organize content, training, and resources to help others in our community learn how to edit, contribute, and broaden our impact. However, our internal knowledge is not readily available or searchable without direct, human help. Wikimedians in Residence welcome centralized documentation and resources, since without them we constantly waste time by reinventing the wheel with documentation and knowledge sharing as what exists is not readily findable and thus has to be re-created.)
  • 34 Facilitate a culture of documentation
  • 35 Establish a movement wide knowledge base

I am pinging a few people here for input. I am not clear who is the representative who will be able to submit something on our behalf. Who is that? Pharos, Pigsonthewing, Blue Rasberry , John Cummings, Rachel Helps (BYU), MartinPoulter, and Fuzheado. Thanks. --FULBERT (talk) 18:54, 12 November 2020 (UTC)

I have not gotten any feedback on this suggestion yet, so added a couple "Why" statements. I will submit on behalf of our UG, and really welcome some thoughts OR statements of support for this. --FULBERT (talk) 21:02, 15 November 2020 (UTC)
I agree with all of the above and would only maybe add innovate in knowledge as WiR participants do have good overview of why institutions and their audiences do not use all of WMF media infrastructure as much as Wikipedia. -- Zblace (talk) 19:24, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
Thanks FULBERT for initiating this. If I had one addition it would be recommendation 5, which is all about partnerships, even though the summarized "List of initiatives" seems to have lost the reference to "partnerships" altogether in the final text. Therefore I would add recommendation 5, initiatives 28 and 29. -- Fuzheado (talk) 20:02, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
  • 5. Coordinate Across Stakeholders. WREN has a specific focus on connecting the community with like-minded partners with knowledge in the public interest as a shared value. Therefore, we need ways to share best practices, create resources to help with onboarding new partners, and maintain communication channels.
  • 28 Living documents to define responsibilities for specific areas of work (with partners)
  • 29 Enhance communication and collaboration capacities (with partners)

Thanks Zblace and Fuzheado on your thoughts on these. Seems you both seem to have captured the aspect in Coordinate Across Stakeholders! Pending any other thoughts on this, we will ask for any other feedback or support from our memebers, after which I will submit on our behalf (unless anybody else volunteers!!). --FULBERT (talk) 21:56, 16 November 2020 (UTC)

Thanks, all. I submitted these 3 priorities to the Movement Strategy process today. I would have liked to wait until we meet next week, but this was already overdue and I wanted it in before the large global meetings this weekend. Perhaps this submission can be an agenda item? --FULBERT (talk) 20:54, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
